    ⚡ / 🔥 😱 🔥
This performance is my standard answer to anyone who says that BABYMETAL aren't really metal. : )
It's already epic, and THEN Su rises up from beneath the stage.
This song had it's world premiere the previous night at Budokan Red Night.
The 'Mischief of the Metal Gods' instrumental often precedes 'Rondo of Nightmare', but not always.
This was the Black Night at Budokan in 2014, with Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
And of course BOH on bass. Not that many people play a six stringed bass to begin with, let alone tap one like that.
Su sang three solo songs that night.
She did 'No Rain, No Rainbow', followed by 'Akatsuki' earlier in the set.
I already liked BABYMETAL, but those solo songs made me a die hard fan.
Dancing on a small platform raised in the air demonstrates courage.
Following up an introduction where each Kami Band member shows off their skills with a solo, shows total fearlessness. : )

Nice, and a good 2nd reaction. Also, good analysis during their solos. The "unresolved" feel is intentional, as the lyrics of this song is about a "Rondo" of re-occuring nightmare, in which the protagonist, after being chased by an unseen monster, gives up and succumbs to it (When Su-metal is encased in the light cage/marionette part).
Info on Kami Band, supporting Babymetal:
*2012:* Started backing Babymetal for live show encores only.
*2014:* Backed Babymetal fully for ALL live shows (not on studio recordings).
*2019:* 4 Americans were added as Kami West to support Babymetal's increased tour intensity.
*2023:* Kami East played their last show with Babymetal in Jan, and Kami West takes over as sole backing band.
    *Kami East Members:*
Mikio Fujioka - Guitar (RIP 2018): Virtuoso, and one of the best guitarist I've seen.
Takayoshi Ohmura - Guitar: Mikio's understudy (Pink glam guitar for RoR, and gold guitar in this song).
Leda Cygnus - Guitar: Was also present in RoR and this song.
Bohte Daisuke "BOH" - 6-String Bass: Just a beast lol.
Hideki Aoyama - Drums: Speed drumming freak of nature.
** _Kami East is amazing, but after almost a decade supporting Babymetal, these guys are now older, starting/with families, and Babymetal also had a 1.5 year hiatus in 2021 due to pandemic, which led to Kami East members going off doing their own projects. Also, they are some of the most sought after musicians in Japan. These may be some contributing reasons why Babymetal switched to Kami West mid 2023._
*Kami West Members (You have not seen any of these guys yet):*
    Chris Kelly - Guitar
    CJ Masciantonio - Guitar
    Clint Tustin - Bass
    Anthony Barone - Drums
** _Chris, CJ, and Clint were/are members of the Star Wars themed band called Galactic Empire. Anthony Barone was the ex-drummer for Shadow of Intent. Ryan Neff also replaced Clint a few times during 2023's tour due to Clint's prior committments._
Also, as you check out more Babymetal, just remember, the focal point of the band is the ladies, their vocals, and their choreography. The band members are always respected, despite technically being "not officially Babymetal", and a session band. Thus, you will often see them featured in solos, and cameras does focus on them a decent amount too (not always though). All the fans know that this is a sympiotic relationship. Without the band, Babymetal would have never have been taken seriously by the metal community, but without Babymetal, the band members would have never had a chance to tour the world for the past decade+ and play at some of the most prestigious sold out arenas/shows.
Hope this helps your journey! 🤘🦊

The Kami band is not a 100% set of musicians. They have a few different line ups. In the 2014-18 period you have a lineup consisting of Mikio Fujioka, (guitar,RIP 2018), ISAO(guitar), Leda Cygnus (guitar), Takayoshi Ohmura(guitar), Boh (Bass), Hideki Aoyama (Drums), Yuya Maeta (Drums 2014 only). And then in 2019 they added a Western Kami Band with the intent of using them for NA/EU tour dates as BabyMetal began lengthening their world tours. The Western Kami's are the guys from Galactic Empire ( Chris Kelly - guitar ,CJ Masciantonio - guitar ,Clint Tustin - bass ) with the addition of Anthony Barone on drums. Most of the guys have their own side projects or support other artists. With Mikio and Takayoshi both teaching at Musicians Institute (Tokyo/Osaka Campus's). Koba (producer) clearly wanted the cream of the crop. And we have been blessed ever since.

Great reaction, thanks and welcome back!
I understand the "issue" with the first video and yes, it was a combination of too many "distracting" inputs like the choreo, the chants, the outro... BUT you were respectful and that's what matters. It's not always this case, believe me.
With that said, the instrumental intro, "Mischiefs of the Metal Gods", is perfect to show every Kami Band member's skills. And it serves to summon Su-metal who finally emerges from the depths ... well, at least from the bottom of the stage. 😁 This is the only intro song which has a name but they have several other songs with an intro when they perform them live such as "Catch me if you can", "YAVA!". "Awadama Fever", "Kagerou" and more recently "METALI!".
"Rondo of Nightmare" is probably their darkest song lyrically. It's about Su being trapped into an endless nightmare, without any chance to escape, where she's chased by a dark entity as she tries to run away and hide. Finally she asks the entity to reveal its real nature before giving up.
This was just the second time they performed it live (the first one was just the previous night at the same venue) and Su-metal, being 16 at the time, was standing by herself on a relatively small and elevated platform, without any safety and probably not being able so see a thing due to the spotlight. This is so freaking metal!
This is one of what we call Su-metal solos. She has four of them. The others are: "Akatsuki", "No rain no rainbow" and "Amore".
I see you were counting the time signatures... so, here is the mandatory suggestion: "Tales of the Destinies" live at Tokyo Dome 2016. 😁
On a side note (and I understand it's probably too soon for you) they are touring again in the US starting next November. I wouldn't miss it.

    Thanks for this reaction.
1:23 I'm glad most people didn't berate you, just tried to educate. We (the largest part of the fan base) tries very much to be as 'toxic free' as possible. Babymetal started out as kids they had songs like: No more, Bullying, Forever (Ijime, Dame, Zettai or IDZ for short). I know the lyrics are in Japanese, but we got English translations, they should know better.
I'm certain others have already mentioned many things, so I'll try not to repeat to much.
Road of Resistance was stretched for the live performance. When you are there, you would rather have it last even longer, actually they even cut some for the video. 🙂
The musicians are some of the best session musicians Japan has, but they didn't have much fame, in part because they aren't in regular bands much. Babymetal has greatly boosted their visibility to not just Japan, but around the world. Also they love playing for Babymetal, they get to play stages around the world they would otherwise have never done before. And got to meet metal legends behind the stage at festivals. And on the other side, Babymetal has benefited as well because it's proper brutal and authentic heavy live backing band, all extremely skillfully played. Giving them a bit more street cred or at least peaks the interest of many metal fans around the world.
Bassist BOH, if I remember correctly concluded: best to learn 6-string bass guitar, making him more exclusive compared to regular bassist to get work. And pretty much self-taught (at first not with the right technique ?) especially looking at Billy Sheehan. Because of Babymetal he got to meet him at a festival. And years later also got to perform with him. Two 6-string bassist performing together is as session musicians performing live if I remember correctly for a female singer in Japan is an unusual choice, but that's what happens. BOH also has a jazz-fusion band together with other members of the Kami band. It's called Kari band ( 仮BAND ), they have 2 mini-albums, sadly 1 of the members passed away, so they've not released much since.
The Budokan in Tokyo is a famous venue, known by many around the world, because famous live performances where done there. It's basically: the Madison Square Garden of Japan.
The main singer of Babymetal, Suzuka aka Su-metal, as a kid wanted to perform there, she reached her dream at age 16 with Babymetal (setting a age record for youngest female act, first ever to perform there was the Beatles and youngest person to perform there was Micheal Jackson as part of the Jackson 5). So what do you do then ? You announce your first world tour after these shows, almost like a victory lap. 🙂 The other 2 Babymetal members were still 14 at the time, but 15 when the world tour started. The first 2 shows were actually their birthday shows, in Paris France and Germany.

Never understood the Babymetal hate. I am a metalhead from the early 1980's and when I first heard babymetal about 10 years ago, I was totally caught off guard. Yes, it is a very different sound, and the vocals are a huge change to what I am used to hearing in the metal genre. But after a few listens and upon watching the videos out at that time of their's, I was so impressed by their showmanship and the dedication to providing a huge visual and audio spectacle for the fans. Been a big fan since.

    Welcome back to the Foxhole.🦊🤘🔥
Thanks for coming back with this great suggestion. Taking your thumbs up and down ratio, i could say in general around 92% enjoy ROR as a first time watching a BM song, that's why we usually recommend that song among some others, it always depends on the reactor oc but like i said, that's in general and i know there are some musicians and singers (i think one of them from Europe comes to my mind) don't like speed or power metal songs, but hey, here you are again and like i said you will barely find a song alike to another in BM catalogue.
Also don't mind about comments complaining on your thoughts, as long as you don't disrespect the girls it's all good.
As you can see this is not the usual happy BM song. It's one of the many songs composed by YuppeMetal (aka Yuyoyuppe), he's also behind Karate, Kagerou, the arrangements of Megitsune, Headbanger!! Night Of The 15 Mix (only the mix) and more new songs from latest album such Monochrome and Believing.
_"Akumu No Rondo"_ (or Rondo Of Nightmare) combines not only heaviness with dark waltz and dope time signatures changes but also delicate and fragile elegance that makes you want to grab your inception kit and go to rescue this 16 yo queen from this nightmare.
Temporarily title song was "Kill The Alice" so it is like Alice but instead of Wonderland she's trapped in a nightmare trying to escape and avoid some evil entity.
Rondo is a musical form in which you can hear a repetitive pattern, an example of this could be the song "Blue Rondo a la Turk".
The Kami Band is doing their second magnificent intro of the night with their own set called "Mischiefs Of Metal Gods". They become regular after this special live at Budokan 2014 and leaving baby-bones, from early shows, behind, shout-out to them thou.
They're Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums, this time Leda Cygnus is the first guitar, i already told you something about them in your ROR reaction.
This was the day (night) after the first live premiere of this song and she's dancing and performing like she already did a dozen times before, like a pro. Also she's showing some fierceness here dancing on that high dangerous mini stage with no wire and that's how she keeps winning everyone's heart.
But not everything was perfect here despite their impeccable performance and sound, and the day before the girls face that dangerous challenge on the stage, taking their own revenge after coming back in 2021 to celebrate their 10 years and leaving those ghosts behind, fortunately.
Like i said, YuppeMetal is the one behind this song and he took inspiration from "Protest The Hero - Bloodmeat" song, of course i recommend you to hear that blaster song.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful SuMetal solo and my favorite along with "Akatsuki" (live at Budokan 2014 is another great choice) The other solos are great too and those are:
    - No Rain No Rainbow live at Legend S 2017, heavily blocked thou.
    - Amore live at Wembley Arena 2016.
And of course the rest of the girls under "Black Babymetal" are enjoyable too, they're taking a break here while SuMetal is performing to come back later, so don't miss out on their other 4 songs too such:
    - "Onedari Daisakusen" live at Legend 1997, Gans Tomas got that clip safe to react.
    - "Song 4" or "4 No Uta" live at Budokan 2014.
    - "GJ!" live at Wembley Arena 2016
    - "Sis Anger" live at Tokyo Dome 2016".
Next suggestion to come back with the happy vibes and meet what they do on a traditional stage without the top notch production and lights:
    - Karate live at Download Festival 2016.
    See you next time..🦊🤘🔥

One thing to bear in mind is that not every s***y comment is going to be from fans; some will be, but others might be from dedicated haters of Babymetal looking to cause grief and put you off reacting to them. I notice that most of the really hatefull comments are from accounts I have never seen before. Just my observation.
SirGreenDay is notoriously abusive to the point of it being faked for effect. Most Babymetal fans despise his petty attacks and often confront him.
Even Metalmark, a Lovebites fan, has come to join us with his usual passive-aggressive trolling about Su's voice. (He's very envious of her, bless him, LOL), but he's harmless, so we don't mind him.
Babymetal may have overprotective fans, but they also have a lot of haters and snipes because of their popularity and impact.

Welcome back, good reaction.🦊You have been told who the Kami Band musicians are already, I will just say they are the very best session musicians to be found in Japan, they have played with and supported any number of artists and they have said that when they support BABYMETAL they have to be right at the top of their game in order to keep up with the girls.
BABYMETAL are pretty much perfectionists and entirely professional and the Kami Band members love and admire them and are also very grateful that they have been able to tour the world and play so many great stages and venues because of BABYMETAL.
When he first played with BABYMETAL BOH the bassist asked if there were any special instructions or requirements. Their producer told him "Play as loud and as hard as you can! Don't hold back because they are girls, don't hold back because they are idols."
The Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, where this concert was held, is a martial arts arena built for the 1964 Olympics and is now also the most prestigious venue in Japan for concerts. Think Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Gardens levels of prestige. It is the venue every Japanese (and many foreign) artist aspires to play ... only a small minority ever get to do so.
This was March 2014. BABYMETAL had just released their first album and they became the youngest average age female band ever to headline at the Budokan. Su was just a couple of months past her 16th birthday, Yui and Moa were both 14. They sold it out 2 nights running.
These were also the shows where the Kami Band became the full time support for all live shows - up to this point they were being phased in playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows.
BABYMETAL were back at the Budokan in 2021 where they played 10 concerts over the course of the first 3 or 4 months as a big part of their 10th anniversary celebration.
So here we had the Kami Band showing their skills and prowess as elite musicians - then 5'2" tall 16 year old Su-metal rises up on her platform and immediately commands all the attention of everybody in the arena.
'Rondo of Nightmare' is one of the 4 solos Su-metal had (2 on each of the first 2 albums). Yui and Moa would get a chance of a break while she performed these ... Su would get her chance for a break when Yui and Moa performed their 'Black BABYMETAL' duets ... also 2 of them on each of the first 2 albums.

The first guitarist is Leda Cygnus (or just Leda). He's the member of the Kami Band I've seen the most outside of Babymetal. He played guitar live in studio for Yuko Suzuhana, vocalist and pianist of the great Wagakki Band, when she played her solo album song by song. He's also backed up Miyako, the brunette guitarist from LOVEBITES, when her short-lived side project, Sonic Lover Reckless, played what I believe was their only live show. Leda is a damn good bass guitarist as well and has played bass for some of Babymetal's studio stuff. He played bass in Galneryus for a time as well, though his stage name at the time was Yu-to.
The second guitarist is Ohmura Takayoshi. He's been in a few bands, the only one of which I'm familiar with is UROBOROS, the vocalist of which was Aya Kamiki, the other half of Sonic Lover Reckless.
The bass guitarist is BOH. As all bass players should be, he was influenced by Billy Sheehan and Victor Wooten. I don't know much else about him other than he plays Atelier Z six-string bass guitars.
The drummer is Hideki Aoyama. His father Jun Aoyama played drums as well, but I'm not familiar with his work. I know Hideki has played in other bands and with other artists, but the only one I can remember offhand is that I believe he played with Fami, the current bass guitarist of LOVEBITES, during her solo show a few years ago.

Always sorry to hear when commenters are asses when Babymetal is involved. Babymetal has always had an innate positivity to everything they've done so that type of vitriol has NO business in Babymetal reaction. I think perhaps the more positive of the negatives is-as you've no doubt gathered by now-because Babymetal to so many of us has brought such joy. We're very devoted. You got as much stuff as you got I think because people respect your well informed opinion. This was a Su solo by the way. The other two girls also had duets in the olden days. Su was 16 here. Now you've experienced a bit of where they've come from I'd love to see you experience something more recent-for context. All the girls are now young ladies in their 20's and they're still rocking the stadiums and arena's. Thanks by the way for giving BM a second look. And just for the record there is an insane amount of lore and history around this band. Here's another suggestion that features the Western Kami Band-(all American musicians) and the drummer just does some insane double bass blast beats. So Su is tiny she is only 5.2 and 16 years old so your spot on with small frame comment but she can hold a note a long time and is loud and very clear if the lyrics are there you can hear every word perfect even if it is in Japanese 😁 your dislikes maybe from the BabyMetal community ( i always give a like even if i dont like the reaction just for givin them a listen) or their is BabyMetal haters who come on a reaction of them just to leave the same old comments usely "you should listen to #### all girl band play their instruments and write there own songs " and leave a dislike . Nice reaction i enjoyed it 😁

Budokan is a sports arena, round configuration, ideal for sports. You must be invited to play at Budokan, Babymetal have played there many times. This song is a solo for Su, Yui and Moa have a break. They also have 4 songs together as Black Babymetal (so Su can also take a break).
Song is about being chased by a demon in her nightmare, telling it to stop chasing and appear already and get it over with. That's why the feel/timing is not a constant 4/4, dreams always floating around. Keep learning!

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛 and congratulations! BABYMETAL will go on US tour from Nov. thru Dec. and perform 16 shows at 15 venues.
This is the song that I am longing for the revival with Su-Metal's matured rich voice. (Of course I love this version) "Rondo" is a musical form with a recurring leading theme. I can't tell how many times I have viewed this video. It is literally a rondo of happy dream for me. Kamis' (=Gods') super solos were excellent enough as a main event in the show, but once the 16-year-old Queen (as of 2014) emerged from the underground, she colored everything differently with her penetrating voice then turned Kami Band's plays into a ritual to summon her.

Babymetal are something quite different to what is typical in the music scene, and as a result they are one of the most polarizing bands in metal. In fact, they are pretty unorthodox even by the standards of Japanese music, which means they are something of a niche act even in their homeland. A big part of what made them famous was how different they are from the norm and how unique their career trajectory has been; from starting so young, to persevering through a ton of hate, to finally gaining acceptance as a legitimate part of the metal scene, to finally reaching the point where they are a prominently billed artist at major metal festivals and collaborating with some of the biggest names in metal. Babymetal's true story is actually better than fiction.
This performance was at the famous Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo, which was built for the martial arts events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It's an octagonal shaped venue, so the performance is in the round, hence the circular stage. The Budokan is the most prestigious venue to perform at in Japan, and Babymetal still hold the record as the youngest female act to ever headline a show there.
The lineup of the Kami Band isn't fixed because they are all session musicians, and it depends who is available for any particular show. However, there are a certain musicians that have appeared very often over the years. On this particular occasion, the Kami Band was Leda Cygnus (first guitar solo), Takayoshi Ohmura (second guitar solo) , BOH (Daisuke Bohte) on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums. All four of them have been frequent members of the Kami Band over the years. If you want to see just the members of Kami band (and friends) in action without Babymetal, check out "The Hills of Wisteria" - ua-cam.com/video/y-DHzrF0hKM/v-deo.html
Rondo of Nightmare is one of Su-metal's four solo songs from the first two albums. When the girls were young, they needed to be able to take breaks during live shows, so they created four songs that Su-metal could sing solo while Yuimetal and Moametal rested, and then they created four songs that Yuimetal and Moametal sing without Su-metal when they perform as "Black Babymetal". Rondo is a fan favourite, but sadly it hasn't been played live at all since 2017 and as time goes on, it looks more and more like we might not see it again.
The story is about a girl trapped in a recurring dream of a monster chasing her relentlessly. She runs, but eventually becomes exhausted and she begs the monster to show its face before it kills her. It's probably Babymetal's darkest song in terms of lyrical content. It's intentionally discordant and confusing with it's many time signature changed to disorient the listener so they feel the unease of the girl in the song. A lot of people don't appreciate how technical and complex a lot of Babymetal's compositions are, which I think is one of the things that has always set Babymetal apart from their imitators (along with Su-metal's phenomenal voice).
Su-metal is indeed small but powerful, she's 5'2", but on stage she's ten feet tall. Babymetal's creator and producer Kobametal saw her an 11 year old and identified her as the frontwoman (frontgirl?) for his heavy metal meets J-pop hybrid project. He was impressed by her powerful voice and unique stage presence, and felt that she wouldn't be overpowered by the noise of a metal band playing behind her, and he was right.

Japanese music was discussed by Marty Freedman, who spent 20 yrs in Japan talking to Rick Beato.
He said. In western music there is typically 3 or 4 chords in a whole song , but in Japan simply pop songs may have a half dozen for the verses and another different half dozen for the chorus.
So you in western music would expect 1 4 5, or similar.

I think it would be worth you having a look at them playing Ijime, Dame, Zettai at Sonosphere. It was early in their career and their first tour. They were moved from a small side stage to the first act (I believe) on the main stage. 50,000+ metal heads who didn’t know who they were, and, in fairness, BabyMetal didn’t have much idea of what a European metal festival was like either! The crowd will always give an act a chance, but while they don’t generally turn nasty if they dislike what they see, they can certainly become very disinterested. This was the end of their fairly short set (around 40 minutes) but you can see how they impressed. It’s worth it just for the look on Su’s face as she starts singing, she knows the crowd are hers!!! Also how thrilled all of them are at the end to have got the reception they did.
I also saw in one interview that Rondo of nightmare is a reference to the endless terror of domestic violence and how difficult it is to escape. A particular problem in Japan where, for a lot reasons, female suicide is one of the highest in the world.

    Yava w/intro

    Awadama fever w/intro
    Metali w/intro (Western Kami)
And their only song that was exclusively written by the Eastern Kami Band - Hill Of Wisteria
Written by Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH, and Mikio Fujioka. It was only ever played once as BABYMETAL at Yokohama Arena in 2015. Although outside of BABYMETAL it was played during an all star jam concert held by guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura and his band outside of Babymetal. Both performances can be found on UA-cam.

Ha! We caught another ONE! 🤣 Just kidding! (sort of 😉) I´m glad you liked it, as I was one of the many who suggested doing "Rondo of Nightmare", so that you could see most of the crafts(wo)men at work! I think you could ensure yourself about the prowess of every single one of the 5 (!) musicians. I count Su-Metal as an instrumentalist in this! She uses her powerful voice just like a musician uses his instrument, and she did it in a formidable way in this performance! You will be surprised if you continue with BABYMETAL, as, at some point, you will listen to her doing even more mindblowing performances. Might well be that this won´t end with goosebumps, but with tears (of joy, of course!). She is an amazing vocalist, IMHO one of the best in the world, currently.
We all know about Aoyama-san caring for the whole timing of the songs/performance, using the ipad🤣 Btw., you should watch him singing while drumming! He did this all the times they played "Gimme Chocolate!!" live (best visible during the live performance at Stephen Colbert´s Late Show), and sometimes he did a "making silly faces" battle with either Yuimetal or Moametal, or both. During a performance, of course!
I think I get your "problem" with "Road of Resistance". IMHO, this was because you concentrate very hard on the technical aspects of a song. Maybe it helps a bit if you follow an advice that Su-Metal gave many years ago, an advice she gave to all of us: "Don´t think. Feel." Keep in mind that she gave that advice exclusively related to things of musical/artistic nature! She is a wise human (and a genius in her field of knowledge/prowess, no doubt!), albeit being fairly young when she said that. She still IS fairly young, compared to myself 😄
In case you have some spare time, watch some interviews with the ladies. There are interviews to read, too! Think about the things all four (I include Momometal, of course!) of the ladies said during these interviews. It is worth it! It might happen that these ladies open a whole new world to you. Less technical, but a little bit more emotional.

you will get goosebumps from a lot of babymetal songs, it's inevitable. as most will tell you, their live performances are really how they should be experienced, even though the studio recordings are great as well. their energy and audience connection are pure magic. as much as i love all three girls on stage i have to recommend another solo su metal song because it's one of my favorites. it's called "akatsuki",and the best version (in my opinion) is from the fox festival 2017 concert. there are other versions with more elaborate staging, but that one is pretty stripped down with su close to the band like a front person should be. it also includes a dual guitar solo featuring the late mikio fujioka who died tragically not long after that show. also a tip for you,the you tube channel "for the fox god" has a wealth of live babymetal videos with closed captioning in english. as fantastic as the music is,their lyrics are also wonderful. btw babymetal has just announced a fall tour of the u.s. with tickets on sale this friday.

As a longtime fan, I personally find that Road to Resistance is not great as an introduction to BabyMetal. It's an outlier stylistically when you look at their entire catalog of songs. It's the perfect performance to showcase how good they are in a live show. It's a great performance, but it's not one of their songs that I listen to regularly. Karate, Megitsune, and Headbanger are the quintessential Kawaii-Metal songs that perfectly showcase the style that BabyMetal was going for in the beginning. There are plenty of great songs for you to discover and while the styles do change as the girls grow up, it still feels like BabyMetal.

Hello from Spain, excellent reaction, I have already subscribed to your channel :)
I'll tell you my very summarized experience with Babymetal.
In 2014-2015 I saw the video for "Gimme Chocolate" and I thought it was horrible, a gimmick to take advantage of metalheads with a love for Japanese culture and a prefabricated group without any quality.
    And I forgot about them.
At the beginning of this year, for some reason, UA-cam started suggesting videos of the group, I had nothing better to do so I started watching them and I couldn't stop until the fact that Babymetal is probably the band that I have listened to the most in 2024.
I understand that the nature of the band and its origin can be conflictive and be rejected by many metalheads, but I think that Babymetal have always been honest about it, very respectful of the world of metal, with an impressive live performance and a lot of talent, and also with one of the best female singers today.
As a person who has been on both sides, I perfectly understand each point of view (toxic and rude people aside).
For me, the best definition of what Babymetal are was made by the singer of the Swedish metal band Avatar (I'm sure you know them), they toured with them in the USA and he said something like he thought he was going to tour with the Spice Girls but in reality was with the Cirque du Soleil of metal.
Believe me, it's worth continuing down the fox hole!

Forgot to mention that when the Kami band first got the call to play with the girls they thought it would be a pretty easy job. They were stunned by the work ethic of Su, Yui and Moa. No one works harder or puts more effort into what they do than these girls. Tales of them collapsing at the end of shows, as well the lighter ones of Yui and Moa doing homework while Su does her solos are fairly well known, though Amuse, their management company tries to keep everything under wraps. Amuse are probably the most likely to give you a strike on UA-cam!!!

Thank you for give us another go
This song sounds away apart from the diatonic taste of road of resistance It's shedding all the way , and the Rondo "structure" with no clear verse, chorus , bridge make this so interesting. Things start to make sense because of the strong melodic line sung by Su-Metal.
One of interesting thing about to work with several composers , arrangmentistist , producer is the variety of ideas, Babymetal songs are very different one for another.
They do several genres of metal and mix with other kinds of music RAP, electronic, ska, latin , indian ....
Since you are a musician I like to suggest Tales of Destinies live at Tokio Dome , a Portnoy approved song.

If you continues your journey, it will be interesting to see how you react to their more playful songs. Rondo of Nightmare is one of my favourites, but in terms of a „typical“ BABYMETAL song (there is no such thing), it‘s pretty far of, in my opinion. The dark atmosphere is very unusual for them, most of the time they are all about positivity. And it‘s missing the playful element that most songs have. Again, I don‘t mean that in a negative way, I love the song.
But the other, more unusual side is what some Metal fans can‘t handle. So that‘s where it gets more interesting in terms of a reaction. If I were to choose the most defining BABYMETAL song, my vote would go to Megitsune. But choose five songs, and you‘ll get five very different pieces of art. Looking forward to your next reaction!

A passionate fanbase can always be a double edged sword, especially when it's a group that specializes in live performances and everyone has their favorite. As far as the band goes, it's important to note that the fans LOVE and respect the Kami band, but the reason why the group is structured the way it is, is because they couldn't afford a band at the start for this metal producer's wild dream. So the live band was added later as they became more popular.
If you'd like to see the drummer from the Western Kami band (Which was formed in 2019 since the Ladies were older and could tour in the West more), check out Kagerou. @@PaleHorseShabuShabu Maybe we could agree on "Dancing in the inversed dark on an elevated platform without a tangible rim, while she couldn´t watch her own steps most of the time during the performance, because she was not supposed to look down most of the time". Her choreo training helped her a LOT with this, that´s for sure. You know, repeating body part movements with less than an inch misalignment margin (train your muscle memory!), counting steps, memorizing succession of movements, such things.
I was in a comparable situation myself, several times... you literally see nothing but very bright light or deepest darkness outside the lights (which is effectively the same as pure darkness or pure light for the eyesight, but even more confusing to the brain), and if you are not able to watch your steps by looking down, you will most likely fall, if you ever leave the "safe" area you trained yourself on before doing this. Just one little step too far, out of the "safe" area, is too much. You will loose your orientation and, at some point in time, the ground you´re moving on. Keep in mind that the platform had no rim to feel with the toes. Loosing the balance is another danger, and a quite propable one for the untrained person. I strongly believe that they provided for some choreo parts that allowed her to verify her actual position by looking down, but I noticed just two of those clearly.
Doing this is much more difficult than most people believe it to be.
I think we are allowed to admire her for this performance 😉

  • @johnschultz7765

Not surprised that as a drummer you were interested in the time signature of the song. Indeed, most of the song the band is playing in 7. I think you mentioned earlier that the count was in 6. But from an IEM capture of Su-'s feed, there were places where the metronome was counting in 3 rather than six. This fits with a few tutorials done on UA-cam by Takayoshi Ohmura (2nd lead guitarist) on this and a few other Babymetal songs. The metronome was not counting most of the song. The "scream" in the brief bridge before the quiet verse was purely 16-year old Su- without any time or pitch cues doing her precision singing.
The framework for the intro was put together by Leda Cygnus (first lead guitarist). He has done some other arranging and writing for Babymetal and contributed some playing on at least one studio recording. This is unusual as their is no other known overlap between the kamiband (live band) and the studio session players. Leda was at one time a part of the band Galneryus and had played guitar, bass and some vocals.

The click was in 3, but it depends how you count it. Makes the most sense to count it in 6, probably 6/8 time signature. The click would then be in 3 with an accent on the 1.

    • @johnschultz7765
      @johnschultz7765 24 дні тому +1

@teckreactions , you're not the first musician to say it was 6, and Ohmura said 6 (and 7). But he had also said the vocal line was in 3 (and he had access to the score). Yes, accent on the downbeat and Su- even waltzes a few bars in the middle of the chorus. The rondo form applies separately to the instrumental backing and the vocal melody. An interesting composition.

They are not a conventional metal band, but the live performances are the best in the world, Rammstein like productions, and mix every metal styles possible with mostly uplifting lyrics and j-pop elements. But the focus is in the girls.

Babymetal's Japanese Kami Band mainly consists of four guitarist - Leda Cygnus, Mikio Fujioka(Rip), Takayoshi Ohmura and Isao. On bass its usually BOH and on drums its Hideki Aoyama.
    .
The guitarists in this video are Leda Cygnus with the first solo and Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH on bass and Hideki on drums.
    .
As of right now Babymetal has American Kami Band playing for them. They started playing with Babymetal since 2019, may be due to scheduling reasons of Japanese Kami band as they have their own side projects. The American Kami band wear black robes and face masks instead of white robes and facepaint that you see the Japanese Kami band wearing in this video, which is one way to distinguish whether its the Japanese guys or the American guys playing. The American guys are bigger in stature too, compared to their Japanese counterparts.

Welcome to the foxhole! (It's not a rabbit hole, it's a fox hole, get it?) And you have no frickin idea how deep this one goes. It absolutely boggles the mind. What babymetal (shortened BM) does is take whatever genre of music they have lying around and fuse it with stank-face-inducing guitar and drums, adds angelic vocals and possibly sprinkles in some electronica, then accompanies it with choreographed dance and tons of production value. You can get anything and everything. You looking for some psy-trance metal? BM's got it. How about Rap? What about some Doom death trash? You like indian influences? Ska? Maybe a ballad to go with that? How about some Eurovision? A song about a spicy fruit salad maybe? It's absolutely bonkers all the way through and so very fun! And if you at 10 songs in think that you know what they are all about, expect the 11th song to be nothing like you expect. The breadth this band possesses is truly unlike any other and they arent afraid to try new things. It's a reaction goldmine too, so you'll have lots of fun with this I'm sure. Good luck friend!

Anyone that does songs about bullying has to be applauded! I think I'm right in saying that I suggested this song along with many others. One particular song that I believe will be of interest to you musically speaking is 'Tales of the Destinies' which is all over the place musically. Not one of my favourites, but nevertheless interesting from a musicians point of view - it's only been played live once if I remember rightly. To their credit, they have a go at many cultural genres such as Indian traditional music , Latino music 'Night Night Burn', to name but two. Take good care of yourself 😃 😊

Don't let the haters get to you, I'm sure they don't, as 99.9% of fans enjoy seeing new people discovering BabyMetal and are happy to offer information and recommendations.
If you want another live that showcases the Kami Band then probably Catch Me If You Can would be a good one to go for. It's one of the heaviest musically from that period and has hugely contrasting vocals which is what BabyMetal do.
Maybe go for ua-cam.com/video/ugnyM69LN54/v-deo.html Be aware that this is a compilation version from multiple live shows, if you're ok with that, but does show the various sets and costumes from that period. There's also plenty of single performance videos from then if you prefer.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 24 дні тому +1

That isn't the worst compilation, but (and this is just an opinion of course) for a first time seeing and listening to a song like CMIYC, because of all the lighting, stage and costume changes it loses a lot of the continuity and feel that a reactor will get from a single live performance. It would be fine for a second time hearing the song and then maybe seeing all the different concerts, stages and so on.
For a first time seeing and hearing this song I would recommend live at Budokan Black Night as a full performance with the Kami Band intro showing them playing the notes you are hearing being played or live at Legend 1997 which really gives a good idea of how much the crowd joins in and becomes part of the performance.

@@Grington300 Hi, to be honest I was torn between suggesting the compilation and Budokan Black Night but decided on the compilation mainly for the costume & set changes as I mentioned.

Su was only 16 here. She has a powerful voice, and yes, they are all very small framed. You see them on the stage with dancers on occasion, and the dancers look heavy. No, Babymetal are small. In Road of Resistance, it does drag on a bit, and they actually cut a couple of minutes out of them running to all sides of the arena doing the "We are Babymetal" bit. That was significantly cut back. In person at a Babymetal show, time flows differently. They hit the stage, then get off and you feel like 15 minutes passed. No, they've done the whole set. In person it flies by. I will admit, does not always make for a good video. And sorry for the people who gave you a hard time. I thought you did a fine job

One thing I just want to say. Don't take the negative people too harshly or seriously. Are they over-stepping their bounds? Quite possibly, yes. Is there a reason? Again quite possibly. Majority of the Babymetal community are very good people. I love this community. There's been times where I've had ... debates with some of the big hitters of this community, but at the end of the day I'd still consider them as friends. As for the reason for their toxicity? Well, I don't think they meant to be toxic towards you. I think it's more a matter of overprotectionism. Some of these fans have been with Babymetal since they first started back in 2010. Su-Metal, the main vocalist was born in 1997, so at the time of conception of Babymetal she was only around 13 years old, the 2 dancers were roughly 11 to 12 years old. So they were practically babies still. These loyal fans have watched this young woman LITERALLYL grow up and as such look at this ladies almost as baby sisters. So a LOT of us are very protective of these ladies. We're not the only ones who are like that either. Some of the big name bands like Metallica and slipknot and I think KoRn and Rob Zombie also feel the same way. So when they see a reactor that doesn't have the reaction they WANT they go into defend the girls mode. I'm not saying it's acceptable, but if you can understand it, then it hopefully won't bother you as much as you'll understand where they're coming from.
As for THIS song, Su-Metal was only 16 when she performed this song and this was only the second time she performed it as far as I am aware. So while you are correct she IS a tiny frame (I think she was 5ft tall at that time, even now she's only 5ft or maybe 5ft 1in roughly lol), she has a powerful voice and powerful lungs for such a tiny frame. She's also full of confidence for a 16 year old to perform in a huge stadium like that in front of a bunch of mostly metalhead dudes 18+.
In terms of what to watch next, it kind of depends on how you'd like to play it. If you're the type of person who enjoys seeing how an artist has matured and progressed as time goes by, then I'd recommend just going through their songs in order album by album. You'll have the added benefit of seeing them grow up in the process as well which is pretty neat to see and isn't something you get to see very often! Or you can jump all over the place and just go by what the fans think would be the next song to listen to. Both are great ways as you can't really go too wrong with Babymetal most of us feel.
    Anyhow, looking forward to more!

Yeah, those few who were crappy to you don't represent the BM fandom (also called 'The ONE') as a whole. You'd think after having to put with gatekeepers and haters from the metal genre towards BM they would have learned to not be that way themselves but sadly this is the interwebz and people like to be nasty sometimes.
I'm glad you gave this another chance. This is a great group to get into as they have a multitude of different songs and styles they try out. They are really worth jumping in to if you're interested and want to give them a good shot. There's also a lot of context to them to learn as well which I know commenters will be happy to help you learn.. I'm happy you liked this one. As stated ny others this is definitely one of their darker and heavier songs and it really show cases the thought and care in the talent behind this group (The ladies, the musicians and the production). These days the Kami band is a little different and has different members but they're no less skilled than the ones you see in the video.
Here are my suggestions for the next ones if you decide to keep going (it's fully ok if not I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea just ignore the toxic fans)
Catch Me if You Can (with Kami intro again) same show as the video you just saw: ua-cam.com/video/YiAJeKgufMk/v-deo.html
Monochrome live (much newer and shows how far they've come): ua-cam.com/video/XJZhy7fWNyY/v-deo.html
Ijime, Dame, Zettai live (this is older but it's the show they really made it outside of Japan. This song also has DragonForce influence as they helped write it). The context with this video is the Sonisphere crowd largely had no idea who they were but as you can see by the end of the set they were fully in love with them: ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html

Sorry about those 7%. You have to take into account the fact these are often the ones who don't have English as their first language and probably misunderstood your words. I've read some of these comments and cringed at how passive agressive some where. I'm glad you could recognize that the majority (over 90%) were positive and "loving" as you said. I hope you can focus on that. BABYMETAL unfortunately, like every fan base, has a portion of people we wish would think twice before posting stuff especially if they have a basic understanding of English. The "forget your preconceived western ideas" was totally uncalled for for anyone who can understand what you were trying to say.
You can throw away and abandon all so-called "western preconceived ideas" and still prefer to watch musicians than dancers. That's completely fine. Some people have a hard time understanding that. You've clearly stated your preference and you never disrespected those who might prefer to consume art differently and that was all that was needed to be understood by these fans.
The correct way to communicate around that would be to present the possibility that this band could potentially alter your tastes if they're doing something that speaks to you - but it is never a guaranteed fact. I do hope you end up appreciating what BABYMETAL tries to do (differently) than pretty much any other band on the planet but it's not a requirement nor a logical continuity. I myself never thought I'd be a fan of a Metal Dance Unit from Japan and would probably have laughed at the idea 5-10-15-20 years ago.
Just enjoy your journey and focus on the 90+ percent ;)
