In today's 265th episode of Dave Tate's Table Talk podcast, guest Matt Wenning sits down.
In this episode, Matt and Dave discuss kidney function and health (delving into Matt's recent stem cell treatment in Cabo), business, the 70% rule, and much more!
Matt Wenning is a three-time world champion powerlifter. He has directed over 6000 troops in strength, conditioning, and wellness for the U.S. Army, including Infantry and Ranger Divisions. He holds a Masters Degree in Biomechanics and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ball State University.
Matt grew up in Indiana, raised by a hard-working, middle-class family. His mother was a nurse, and his father was a Marine and truck driver. When he was six years old, Matt was hit by a car going 50 mph, which took a toll on his physical development. After undergoing 12 months of full leg casts and 12 months in a boot, his legs were underdeveloped.
Four years later, Matt discovered lifting. It allowed him to see he was capable of anything, despite what he had gone through during recovery from his injuries. Then, when Matt was 13, his father passed away due to cancer; a result of complications from agent orange. That's when he started lifting in competitions.
In the beginning, lifting was just a stepping stone to the goal of football. But it became a much larger pathway in his life. Lifting inspired Matt to attain higher education and become a strength coach. He excelled with a 3.9 GPA.
He has been an adviser for the NFL, an international speaker for the NSCA, and a contractor for border patrol, airborne divisions, and the pentagon.

Matt’s experience, combined with his knowledge and willingness to keep learning is very impressive. As an elite member of Patreon, I have experienced the impossible, given my injury history, I swore I would never do a conventional deadlift again and after 5 years of not doing it and 18 months of Matt’s training I smoke a PR at a deficit, after turning 40 over 4 years ago, I haven’t sniffed a pr as I was consistently starting over from injury. I have no other explanation other than training advice from Clint Darden and Matt Wenning programming - my back actually feels stronger than ever and I believe with his method I can continue to have fun in the gym. Thank you Matt!

So much knowledge! Mom of 5 here. After 1 year of dabbling in training, zero athletic backround, I met Matt at the Swis in 2022, just after my 40th birthday. Matt made training easy to understand, the how and why it all works. He put in the time with me to learn various techniques with proper form online and in person, an absolute game changer. My strength and the change in my body have been amazing. The opportunity to travel and train at his gym with his crew in person, is next level energy. Hit my goal of benching 135lb on New Years Eve this year, after working with him for just a little over 1year🙌 My 4 daughters have also been inspired by seeing what their mom is capable of. My son is a young wrestler and watches Matt's videos and works to be stronger too. Longevity for life🙌 Goals of being the grandma that can still bench 😂

I'm no doctor so I don't want to speak out of turn, but from what I know, elevated BP is an issue when it's chronic, especially for the kidneys. When we're squatting, even with big weights, it only lasts a few seconds and then it's over. And we're not doing that constantly every single day. The amount of gear you take doesn't matter so much as the response. Some guys have their lipids destroyed while some don't, and some get really high BP while others don't, relatively speaking. If your BP has been chronically elevated in part due to AAS, even in small doses, then that could lead to issues over the course of decades for someone like Matt who has been training for a long time. That's of course in conjunction with any genetic predispositions or stuff like agent orange (which is crazy to think that people were hurt with that kind of stuff). Glad he's doing better now though. I've had rhabdo before. Anything kidney related is scary.

I hope Matt recovers. Although I do not believe that these problems were caused by training. Although if there is anyone that can have problems of this nature caused by extremebtrsining That is Matt because what he has done over the years can hardly be matched by anyone. Possibly Chriss Duffin who squatted over 800 pounds every day for a month and some other people from westide who lifted exstreme pounds for decadeds

I don't know if it's logistically reasonable but it would be great to have Matt back at least once or twice a month.
I feel like I get a lot out of Matt and he is levels above other guests.
The concepts of waving intensity and volume and exercise selection.
The concept of volume tolerance being both fluid and individual specific and the concept that excessive volume above a certain threshold is catabolic. These are concepts that most coaches don't even bother to discuss or at least don't have a conceptual framework built around them

Tough to say. I know Mitchell Hooper has talked about heavy lifting having an effect on blood vessels in the brain. I'm sure it does impact the kidneys and other organs. I suppose it would be more pronounced the heavier the weights are which is perhaps another reason we should move away from geared power lifting and embrace raw.

Respectfully, the kidney story is “odd”. I don’t really no what to make of it. There is either an encyclopedia of information being omitted (which is totally cool, I wouldn’t even talk about if I were him probably) or something else is off.
He could have done max effort daily and it wouldn’t do that damage to his kidneys.
Drugs, high bodyweight, and the overall lifestyle etc. it gets a little tiring these guys contorting themselves like a pretzel to avoid the drug discussion. That said, I don’t think it’s directly the drugs but likely years of higher blood pressure.
Further, it’s none of my business…but he’s talking about it in a way that is obviously going to be fodder for speculation.
Either way I wish him well and a full recovery.

Talking about trt, I noticed the same thing about not losing much strength.
But, I was only off for 8 weeks.
I was put on trt the first week of June 2001, the week I turned 31.
One day in December of 2016 or 2017, I can’t remember the exact date now, I took my weekly shot and it was one of those shots that just hurt for some reason, so I was like, I am tired of this, what will happen if I just stop taking it after all these years.
So around week 3 I start feeling tired and irritated. I keep training but really don’t feel like it.
Around week 5-6 I start feeling fuzzy headed, like I am walking around in a dream, weird feeling.
At week 7 I have labs drawn and my testosterone is at 54.
So after 8 weeks off I go back on and have been on ever since.
    My dose is 120mg weekly.
But having a testosterone level that low did not feel good at all. And I think that my strength didn’t drop much because it was only 8 weeks.
I do know that when I started trt at 31 it completely changed my life! I felt so much better, my workouts became incredible, and I even gained 20 pounds the first 3 months of trt. I leveled off at that 20 pound gain but over the years I have been 20 pounds heavier but always come back down to this baseline weight when I am no longer eating or working out as intensely.
