    I’m into this at one hour and 25 minutes. I remember JMB talking about getting stronger with DT with JMB learning that you can’t just do singles and you to get stronger because you have to do reps to get stronger. JMB saying ok but 6 reps is as high as I’m willing to go. Just making a decision like that immediately on the spot and sticking to that rule never even crossed my mind when I was trying to get stronger. The discipline to do that just amazes me. I could literally listen to him every single day. Hell I still have a vhf player and JMBs vhf training tapes. He had this same mind set way back then. / thanks DT for these podcasts. I counted it up a few days ago I’ve been weight training 52 years of my life. It just makes me happy and no one can take it away from me.

    I remember about 10 years ago or so sitting down w. an athlete and I was giving some technical instruction - after a few minutes, the kid said "I THINK WHAT I'M DOING IS FINE.". I was shocked but I said "Okay then." and let him continue w. his workout. He was good, but he wasn't exactly the most coachable athlete (obviously) and he could've been a lot better.

    In regards to hard things...how does one make themselves do something they don't want to do? If you willfully do it without outside influence, then although it may be unpleasant, you still want to do it enough to actually go through with it. There are degrees of trade off, but in order to do a hard act, you must convince yourself that it has worth that outweighs the suffering.

      The ACC in the brain is what Tom was referring to. My view on your question is that you CAN do something you did not WANT to. Just because you DID IT, does not necessitate that you wanted to. You are speaking about wanting the reward, the outcome, the benefit from doing the thing. One may certainly want the benefit without wanting to do the thing. Look at work, for example. People want the pay so much they are willing to go to work. But some people love their job. They might do it for nothing! In their case, the ACC would not grow. Wanting the outcome is different than wanting the path to it. FYI, I'm a big advocate on relying on wanting the path. It makes reliance on the ACC to make you do something irrelevant. You can want the goal AND the path.

    • @phoenixperformance1958
      @phoenixperformance1958 10 місяців тому +1

      This is the constant argument you can make... if you're doing hard things, or things you supposedly don't want to, because you want the benefits that that brings... can you TRULY say it's something you don't want to do. This is a parallel argument in my opinion to the idea that nothing is truly selfless. I think a better way of wording it is that the benefit comes from doing things you don't actively enjoy or feel motivated to do AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME. That tends to clear it up a little

      @@phoenixperformance1958 I agree, I was trying to think if you could actually do something you didn't want to do without the knowledge of the trade-off/goal. These are good conversations, thanks for responding!

    This is terrible. Dave please write down questions about lifting and control the show. These guys are acting like they are joe rogan. Very stoner . Not very weight lifting. Don't let your guests run the show. I watch every video. Happens too often. Help deliver some information. Watch Louie Simmons interviews. It's a barrage of information. And it's rewarding . Be more like your Yoda and less like joe rogan .
