Liner Notes:
I recorded this on my latest birthday (Jan. 13th) as a present to myself. One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. I have MTV to thank for this discovery. I remember seeing the original video, and loving the sound, the song, the lyrics, the singer, the band. And the gear porn--a table (table?) full of guitar stomp pedals, racks of keyboards reminiscent of some of my favorite prog rock idols. What was not to love?
I ended up buying "Misplaced Childhood" and absorbing it one December while listening on my mom's CD boombox (a luxury item for us), as I slept on the couch, trying to get comfortable as I recovered from a cracked collar bone. "Seconds Out" by Genesis (particularly "Supper's Ready") was on heavy rotation at the same time.
Marillion went on to become one of my all-time favorite bands. Well, Fish-era Marillion, at least. After he left the band, I sort of did, too. But those four Fish-era studio albums, B-sides, EP's, live stuff--loved it all. Fish (aka Derek Dick) was a colossal figure (literally and figuratively) for me in those high school days. It culminated with me getting to meet him backstage briefly after a great Marillion show at the Glenn Miller Ballroom on CU campus in Boulder during the "Clutching at Straws" tour. The man is one of my favorite poets, not to mention singers and frontmen. His lyrics are second only to Neil Peart in my book. And they're just a hugely talented band overall. I totally get that they're not for everyone, so don't be shocked if you listen to them and don't "get it". I'm just glad I did.

What an awesome cover to one of the best songs ever. The musicianship was masterful and singing was great too. Good job. Thanks for sharing this video!
Congratulazioni, hai cantato e suonato perfettamente , bravissimo 👏👏bellissima canzone 💯💯💯
Best cover ever (from a massive Marilliin geek)
Absolutely adore this cover. You did the song a lot of justice.
I heard this song for the first time in 1987. I knew the first moment I heard it that if I ever had a daughter her name is Kayleigh. She was born in 1991.
I listened to this song on Mtv in 1986. I love Marillion. Thank you for this great acoustic cover!
Ok, I'm impressed. This cover does the original definitely justice. I expected to be disappointed because the song is one of my all-time favourites, but I was proven wrong! You have an amazing voice.
Maybe it would prove that you were right but it proved that you were wrong!
@@dopiaza2006 beat me to it man - lol
Sweet Jesus Mike is a brave man, but it clearly worked, within 2 to 3 seconds of the song you know this is No Ordinary cover. That acoustic sound is insane Mike.
I can't believe how rich Mike makes that six string sound on this. The guitar alone is masterful, and of course the vocals are impeccable. Bravo, Mike!
I love this version. Doing justice to a Fish-era Marillion song is a tough task for anyone, you absolutely nailed it. Great power in the voice and the right amount of emotion too. Thanks for sharing your skills with the world! :)
serious , serious talent Mike. At 42 and born in the 70's this is probably one of my all time favourite songs. Fish would be damn well impressed I'd say. love yourself and Jeff's stuff. Keep it going from the Emerald Isle of Ireland.
I still lover her…..and this song takes me back!
Damn...Let me pick my jaw up off the floor! That was INCREDIBLE! One of my favorite songs ever! Major goosebumps!
This is the high art of strumming and singing along in a perfect way !! I´m really impressed !!
I didn't think an acoustic cover could be this good......
Great song.
Love this tune. And this is one of the finest covers I've heard. You always seem to translate the feel of the song Mike rather than a soulless carbon copy. Good stuff!
That's the goal, thanks for noticing!
Not only better than a carbon copy but still managed to "stay close" to the original. No matter the song. While making it his own.
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful
love the dumpert sign! ^^
because of dumpert he managed to get a lot of exposure in the NL resulting in a lot of support for his Son, so as a gratitude he put the sticker on his gitar......it is still on it as i saw him live @leiden april 2018 :-)
You are so talented. Beautiful job.
Que cover é esse, minha gente? Perfeito!
Absolutely incredible. I can't stop listening to it
Wow!!!
Holy Jebus Man! This song gave me chills the first time I heard it back in 1986. Loved it ever since, but I have never heard an acoustic version that was ever close. Brilliant.
I love it how you did the guitar solo with the vocals...Rothery's solos are second to none in terms of emotion (screw Gilmour) and you got the vibe 100% with your voice.
Another one showing me you're the man Mike. You bring back the vibes of 1985 like no other and you inspire me. Keep it up!
beautiful! Love Marillion. You've made my day a bit brighter!
Damn! That was bloody outstanding! You really nailed the spirit of the song. Just amazing!!
my name is Kayleigh, and why am i crying over this song?
🤠

Incredible I started watching this guy years ago on here and he’s got better and better
Best of the best, I cry
THX Mike for the Inspiration …. it‘s always a pleasure to hear you sing …. and playing Guitar, of course greetings from Palatinate, Germany
The best Mike Massé !!!
Hi Mike. Just wanted to thank you for this acoustic version of one of my favorite tunes ever. It takes me back to my time in the US Navy, where I discovered the band Marillion while frequenting Europe’s beautiful ports of call. While home on leave one holiday and when MTV was still in its first decade, I happened to be watching videos when lo and behold they played the video for Kayleigh. Long story short, I decided years ago that I would name my first born daughter after this song that brought so much joy to me. Never had a daughter, and my son would’ve killed me had he been named that! Once again, thanks for the memories and well done!
This is this song ultimate cover.
My favorite singer covers my all time favorite band, and nails it! This made me smile so much.
You've been so blessed! Your talent goes way beyond an average performance, I hope you realize this.
Your voice is awesome on this piece - love the vocal guitar solo. The sound of your guitar is nice and crisp too. Well done!
You put your love of this song into the song; How can I, a 49 year old Marillion (Fish only, of course) fanatic somehow manage to be hearing this for the first time? It's stunning. By the way, this was always my favourite song to sing when I was very drunk. God bless you Mike.
FROM SOUTH AFRICA --- BRAVO ! ---
Brilliant rendition. Could listen to this all day.
Awesome Mike, im so impressed 👍 even the middle part, your voice did the musical middle justice 🤗

I have to say Mike , coming from Aylesbury UK, the home town of this band I am well impressed. Grew up with this song . 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you @mikemasse you literally took me back to a sweet golden summer. You’re a true artist. This pulled my heart through to my toes. Absolute perfection. Thank you. ❤️❤️🙏🙏😊😊
Wow ! You have an amazing talent to bring to life on an acoustic guitar powerful and beautiful renditions of these 80's classics !!!
Found this after listening to Marillion's song, thinking how good it could sound as an acoustic cover and hoping I could find a version that lived up to expectation. Yours hits the nail on the head - you've made it your own while keeping the spirit of the original. Beautiful!
