Our preps for winter are blowing the in ground sprinkler system, getting the snow blowers started (hoping they will not be needed) put fuel stabilizer in the lawn mower and cleaning the igniter for the furnace.

Check your anti freeze, install snow tires & check car battery. Make sure the kids still fit in their snow boots and snowsuits. Tuneup the snowblower, lineup the snow shovels and sleds and freshen up winter bedding.

Amanda D If you choose to take vitamin D take the gel caps. I recommend you have your dr test you to see how much you need. I have a terrible time getting enough D. Summer I take 2400 units and double in the winter. But that’s me😀 Good luck sweetie, there are meds you can take like I do for seasonal disorders. You are in great company new friend!! We have an old fashioned type cook stove in our living room that uses coal and wood. Our baseboard electric heaters were only turned on once when they were installed. So to be ready we have a wood stockpile and get 1 or 2 ton of coal and that heats us for at least a year. Big savings. Stove also comes in handy if and when the power goes out that we still have heat and can actually use the cook top and oven to make food.

In southwest Michigan in our family, we make sure our tires are in good repair and I think we do put on snow tires sometimes, we make sure the snowblower has gas in it and runs properly, we pull up our garden, we normally can tomato’s and peaches and make apple pie. We also make sure that our winter coats, snow pants, boots, gloves, mittens, hats, and scarves fit and that we have enough for everyone it’s also tennis shoe shopping time. And of course make sure we have enough hot chocolate. :)

My parents always got wood delivered in the fall to our house and then my dad would split the wood. And then we would carry it into our cellar and stack it for the winter. My mom also canned and froze veggies and berries for winter. My dad was a hunter so we would have a freezer full of venison too. Your vlog often reminds me of my childhood preparing for winter. ❤

HELLO SOMERS FAMILY. To get ready for winter we do these things & more. Clean up barns & yard. August thru September harvest our garden. June was strawberry picking & freezing. August is Raspberries & Blackberries pick & freeze. September is garden harvest ti Can & freeze veggies. First October is Jellies & Jams. Middle of September Thur middle October Pick apples & freeze some. This is time to stock your freezers & pantry. The First week in October Make sure our 1000 gallon Propane tank is full. We have a beef butchered at the of August & one pig butchered. October is time to check antifreeze in every tractor truck & cars. Here in Indiana the temperature has been in the 59-62 Fahrenheit at night & 70s. It is starting to feel like fall. Tomorrow we're going to creep back up in the 80's. GOD BLESS

Preparing for winter means saving money so I can afford to heat my house - my house doesn't stay very warm and last year my hands had circulation problems. Hopefully this year will be better. Already starting to cut down my ornamental grasses. Have a ton of leaves getting ready to fall which I mow/mulch, empty all my flower containers, put away all outside decor and furniture. Bought my greyhounds their new jammies for the winter! It's in the 90s again this week though. I do shrink wrap my windows - it helps a lot. Do have to get my furnace cleaned - thanks for the reminder.

Love that song! I think popcorn gorging should be critical winter preparation everywhere! In preparation for winter, I also start all my holiday gift projects. We clean the gutters and winterize RVs, renew the antifreeze in our vehicles, disconnect outdoor water hoses, check the batteries in smoke detectors, and trim some bushes. The final mowing of the grass and raking up leaves happens too.

My family lives in New England so we do get our blizzards, snow, and ice, and temps drop down into single digits during the cold months. This year we finally got a standby generator which is huge. Our baseboard heat and generator run on natural gas and we switched from well water to town water a few years ago. We have been freezed out of our home when the power goes out and unfortunately the power goes out often and for long periods of time in the winter. I love the cold and snow ❄️

We live in Michigan and we do most of the same things that you do! We don’t burn wood at our house but if you do, now is the time when you are stocking up for winter. I’m harvesting my garden and preserving/canning what I can. This is also the time that we get part of a cow or pig if we are going to. We have to stake out where the driveway is so when we get the driveway plowed or we shovel/snowblow, we know where the grass is😂

my husband specializes in aquaponics gardening. it may be something for you to look into in order to grow fresh produce all year long. even in extreme cold, if you build a heated greenhouse, you can do it. plus it's eco-friendly and organic production. the veggies we grew were so flavorful and clean and just fantastic. tasted nothing like what i would buy at the store. plus you save so much money.

We live in the upper Midwest and it can get in the -20s here so winter preparations are important. Being the last house on the power grid : ( we lose power a lot in the winter. We buy up non-perishable foods that are easy to cook without power. Having extra medications on hand (who wants to go outside when you have such conditions). Having a fireplace with a blower motor is great but you've got to have a way to move that heat when the power goes out so a self-powered fan that works off the heat of the fireplace is important. We also buy up small cans of propane that will power a camp stove. Coal oil for the lanterns are important. Lighters, flashlights. If it's too cold to go outside to cook on the camp stove you'll want to cook on the fire in the fireplace. That blackens up pots quick so we have a separate set of pots we don't mind getting all black. A solar powered cell phone charger is important. That's just some of the things we do for winter.

I’m from Michigan, and we always would make sure we have all of our canning and freezing done and some people cut wood and definitely make sure your fencing for your farm animals is safe and secure. However now I live in Kentucky and the next two weeks it’s still 85+•-96• and I live in an apartment so I just make sure I have a snow shovel so I can leave for work if it snows.

I live with my family in South,Louisiana so usually the Winters are mild from the low 40°F-60°F. We will insulate the outside pipes and pipes in the roof. We put on faucet covers so they do not freeze shut. We use heated blankets at night and use warm insulated clothes to save not using the heater unless it goes below 50°F. We need to make sure we have antifreeze in our radiators for our cars and use a ⛽ gas additive to prevent te gas from freezing from the water in our ⛽ gas tanks, we use RainX on our car windows to prevent icing, make sure we have a shovel, cat litter in the trunk for traction if we need it. We have battery operated lanterns in case the power goes off. Extra water and a camper stove with fuel in case the power goes off. I have hundreds of hand & feet warmers you can put in your jacket to keep warm in case the power is off.

we live in new zealand so our winters are not nearly as harsh as yours. However we are the first land mass from the Antarctic and it can be pretty cold at times. The majority of houses including the one me and my two daughters live in arent fully insulated and have single pane thin glass windows nor do we have boilers - usually either a HVAC which blows warm in winter and cold in summer or a wood burner. Bedrooms hallways kitchens bathrooms are not heated, just the living room. So for winter I buy about 2 cords of dry hard wood, we put bubble wrap on our windows, we have lots of blankets and hot water bottles and thermal underwear and socks and snuggle with our two dogs and cats.

Winter prep you need a trail to the Chena to sled, cross country ski and snowshoe.
Cover anything you don’t want the snow to bury. Check the anti-freeze in vehicles for -60. Check the plug-ins on the vehicles to make sure they aren’t broken, that the heaters and battery chargers work. Get the oil changed, the differentials checked, switch to winter tires. I like the Cooper Discoverer M&S.
Furnace cleaning and tune-up. Make sure trees near power-lines won’t cause issues after a heavy snow or windstorm. You’ve got a nice start on the wood. I liked to stack it from one side to the other, so you don’t stack green wood in front of dry wood. Smoke the salmon, can the moose, dry the jerky, dry the vegetables and fruits. Hang the Christmas/Winter lights before it gets to minus 20. A string of LED lights makes for a simple pathway light to the woodshed.
I miss the TVFarmers market. Much better produce than what I see here in SC. Oh the chai tea and the fresh Carmel popcorn. Always something there worth a trip.

It’s funny how we just don’t think about you needing to prepare for winter. We don’t have to do anything here in Queensland. We don’t need heating because it doesn’t get cold enough. I do have reverse cycle air conditioning so I can switch on heat if I needed it. We don’t do anything though. If it cools down a bit much we will wear our slippers and dressing gowns but that’s winter for us. We have tiled floors so they can be cool on the feet. When summer comes we just switch on the air conditioners and turn up the filters on the pool. Done!

  • @TheBeanie2k

We have prepared for winter in a different way than you all do. We get ice storms here every few years. But not as cold as you all get. Just gotta keep gas for generators. Gas in propane tanks. Went one week without power at all due to ice storm. Wasn't fun cause hubby got pneumonia. So we changed many things so if that happens again it makes it easier on me as to cooking etc. Power to the house thru generator etc.. Throw switch I think it's call at the main box to hook up generator.

In WI we do alot of the same winter prep as you do. We also get the snow attire gone through especially with kids that grow like weeds. We prep our cars with gear, weight down the back end of our cars with kitty litter or salt for traction(weight) and if we get stuck, a shovel. We change our oil 10w30 vs 5w30. Get batteries, sparkle plugs change coolant to deeper temperature coolant. We start gathering candles and flash lights and batteries incase of power outage. We do the plastic on the windows and weather stripping. Some people put up wind breakers on their property. Say your wind comes from west they will put up plastic snow fencing to prevent drifting and some put up temporary plywood board walls lets say outside an exterior entrance to help with wind and snow flying in your house while opening the door. Some people build shelters at the end of their drive ways out in the country so their kids can wait for the bus in the freezing mornings in them. We put cardboard in front of engines to block the wind and snow from whipping in the engine.

Seeing a fire in the fireplace when it hot as Hades in Florida blows my mind! 🤯
There's not really any prep needed for winters in Florida.
It does get down in the 20's and sometimes in the teens here in North Central Florida so pipes can freeze so they must be covered as well as plants.
If people don't think it gets cold in Florida, it does. Not like in Alaska by no means.
We've even had snow! But nothing like what y'all get! 😂
I couldn't handle living in Alaska! My thin blood would freeze! 🤣

In MN we put away our outside lawn furniture & patio set. This year since we had a bunch of trees come down we are cutting it up and using it for firewood in our home boiler system. We use propane as well on an automatic fill. We also have a corn stove that we can get going if need be. We also make sure our 1978 Chevy plow truck is set for another winter. 😊

We are in Minnesota. We get all our car gear put in the car (water, food, blankets, matches, ext) we store A LOT of food (both foods in the freezer and canned goods just in case you lose power) pull out ALL the giant comforters we have put away (use the extra ones for if we lose power we use those to cover windows and doors) make sure EVERYONE has the proper snow gear in good fitting condition or go but some. Gosh, we do a lot lol

I live in TN where it’s summer 6 months out of the year, so our “preparing for winter” basically consists of making sure your car fluids are topped and your tires are ok. LOL all joking aside, “winter” here is very mild. Sadly we don’t get a lot of snow; 2 inches will shut Knoxville down (seriously). That said, I’ve lived other places that do experience real winter and I love it. If it weren’t for family (and the propensity for earthquakes) I could definitely see myself living in AK.

We rotate out our bed linens. We have lighter ones for summer and heavier ones for winter. We also declutter the house and stock up on items we use frequently. I also can a lot of vegetables, soups, etc so that we have them ready and available. Another thing we do is clean up the yard and put away all of our summer toys so we can break out the winter toys. I also deep clean the house from top to bottom and I clean out our wardrobes so that we can donate the smaller and gently used clothing and make sure everyone has enough clothing to get through the winter.
And that's just what we're doing this month! Lol

Stock up on hay! Pack and stack tons of hay for the horses. That, making sure our outside outlets aren’t blocked, making sure water trough warmers are in good condition, that all pets are wormed and up to date in shots and health care and we start buying for Christmas. We also check for safety issues around our acreage so there isn’t any hazards for the moose family that lives on our land and make note of any hornets nests that will need to be brought down after winter.

Yes free wood is the best. That’s what we are doing here in middle England U.K. people actually buy it, 150.00 U.K. Pounds for a Tonne. But we are surrounded with forests and woods. So harvest your wood for free. Air dry for a year. We burn kerosene for radiators and hot water, and burn wood and coal. We are just starting this process, because we only moved here in March this year. But I love it.. country living is fantastic..

Getting ready for winter in NJ is pretty much packing away patio furniture and digging out shovels and the snowblower. Our house wastes sooooo much energy. I used silicone to caulk around the windows but it's drafty. Our boiler hasn't been cleaned in at least 25 years. Yikes!

Rural Manitoba? It is cold...norm is around -20 to 30C. Get the cold spells? -45 ...coldest I have experienced? -57. Make sure the house is ready...and yes we do the shrink wrap stuff on our old windows. We stock up on wood and make sure we have snow shovels and the snow blower is working, bring in hay bales for the puppies pen and line up a local with a bobcat...one good Colorado low can dump 3 feet of snow..7 foot drifts. We stock up on groceries and such as our heating bills come December/January hit 6 to 700 a month!

Being from Louisiana there isnt much prep that we need to do. We do chop and split wood for our fireplace, and wrap any exposed pipes bc temps does dip to freeze temps. And just personally during the begining of each season i like to give our house a good deep down cleaning.
We do love fishing in our lake and hunting to help stock our freezer but we never get enough to last all winter but everything helps.

I also check the weather more because Salt Lake City, Utah doesnt know how to handle snow despite 3-6 feet in the valley every year. It took 15 inches to shut down the schools and city.

North Texas......not much snow....EVER! 😭 Mostly we get ice. If we get snow it usually come with ice too. Ha! Can’t make good snowballs with Ice...it kind of hurts. We really just make sure we have wood, and because we are all electric, we make sure that In case of a power outage we have a good warm place to go because our fireplace can only heat a small portion of our home. We also try to load our freezer with deer and hog and duck.

Wood burning very little still do hear but we hardly ever have snow so. No need for snow tires any snow ❄️ we do not drive whole state closes for any snow ⛄️

I would love to live on Guam! You are so lucky! I flew in to Guam back in the 70's on a beautiful morning. We stopped for about an hour and a half and got to go in the airport for shopping and a clean up. I remember seeing how green the island was as we flew in. I was on my way to a position in Asia for 10 years. I often stopped there on my way to and from the US mainland. This was back when Pan American was flying with such super service in the air. I always wanted to visit for a few days but it was too expensive for a layover. Now that I am retired I think of your wonderful island often.God Bless you and your loved ones! ♥️🙏🛫🗺

Make sure we have purchased enough shorts, tees, and flip flops to wear for "winter" before the best stuff is gone from our stores. I live in the Big Bend area of the Florida panhandle, just 40ish miles west of Tallahassee so our area does have to prepare for our 2 to 4 weeks of freezing and/or cold temps, but our preparation is much easier than you have. Our freezing temps can last a day, a week or more consecutively but we usually only have 1 to 3 days of freezing temps before its returns to 40's & 50's at night and the high 70's or more during the day.

Winters in the UK 🇬🇧 are not too bad. We must make sure our boilers have been serviced and see the oil tank is full if you are living rural country side . The people in cities and towns have gas heating.
In South Africa 🇿🇦 where I’m originally from there are no need for it as the winters are not that cold. If it snow and a big if ( mostly in Lesotho mountains ) it can get a bit nippy but nothing too bad .

In Alabama we prepare for winter - by bringing in our houseplants after the 15th of September, and cover the pools up and pray for snow! LOL Very seldom do we get snow before January IF we get any snow at all. I was raised in Michigan so its kinda hard having a winter without snow, but you get used to it.
