We moved our family to Valdez fifteen years ago and I am SOOO glad we did. We didn't have any family here but we quickly made some good friends who became our support system. I wouldn't have thought to include the support system in this video but you're right--it is vitally important to have. When I got a call in the middle of the night to help a friend pull her car out of a snowbank, I knew we had found our place in the world; this is where we need others and we are needed as well.

As the wife of a retired Alaska school teacher I’m am glad you have an open mind because of the socialization given during high school and sending them to college where be social is such a big part of the college experience. So open minded about what your child and the needs for later in life.

First how sweet and caring of you all to bring information to others coming to your area it truly shows your character and love for others. Second momma's hair looks great! A little sassy and very cute. And I love that Audrey enjoys personal finance I pray that continues for her, it is so every important that our kiddos understand and appreciate that knowledge and what it can do not just for themselves but how it can help others.

Appreciate your comments on homeschooling. I have homeschooled my 4 children (16,16,14, and 11) for the last 10 years. Recently discovered some amazing math and science teachers at a local private christian school so I decided to let my 3 older children try that out and they have really excelled. They have also enjoyed getting to meet and spend time with other kids their age on a daily basis.

Great info. When we lived there, one of the things that drove me bonkers was how many companies in the Lower 48 won't even ship to AK. And when you do find someone that will ship, sometimes it takes months for it to get there. Other than that, we loved living there and would move back in a heartbeat! 💕

You are the better parent if you’re sending your child to the school they NEED. Do what’s best for your kids, not for you. They are God’s children FIRST. A parent’s job is to guide them and ensure they have the education they need to follow the individual plan He has for each child. ❤️❤️❤️

Keep in mind you can take firearms through Canada but there are guidelines. No pistols but you can carry rifles as long as they are a certain length, if I remember correctly.
We brought 2 rifles with us when we left North Pole in 2012 and there was a fee involved so make sure you know the regulations.
**make sure your dogs and kitties are up-to-date on shots and have a health certificate or you will not be allowed through Canada.
***You can also travel with a pass card. It's a scaled down version of a passport which is a bit cheaper than getting a passport if you have a large family or on a budget.
    I hope this helps. 😊

I was scrolling to see who else was going to mention this. You are correct. I will say its much easier to fly them through TSA then to cross Canada with them though. We've done both ways. It takes a bit longer at the border when you do declarations, but surprisingly not to bad. Just need to read all the regulations before going, and make sure your paperwork is complete and ready to hand to the agent. They made us go in the office to declare. Also, your dog does not need a "health certificate", this is only for flying. Canada only requires that you pet has been rabies vaccinated as of this year, so you need a copy of that. Personally , I highly recommend anyone driving, pick up a copy of the "Milepost" Magazine. Kudos to Jessica and Bert... Great tips overall! Not only about the coolant, but in most of the interior, I'd get a heater block put in as well.

Nana, you look awesome! I mean it- you look 20 years younger!!!!
Bert, thank you for talking about the perfection with school choices. We have done home, Christian and public. It is all about a season and a child’s needs at the time. Each home has specific needs and they can change with each child. I have learned to let go and trust more with allowing others to teach my kids. God will send the right teachers and help if we allow him.

I was born & raised in Alaska, as was my whole family (parents, aunts & uncles, cousins, etc). I was born in Ketchikan and went to high school in Anchorage. I left when I was 18/19 and moved to Hawaii. 🙂 We also had to plug in our cars at night if leaving the outside, so the engine wouldn’t freeze. 🙂 Ketchikan was very rainy and foggy all the time. Anchorage had snowy winters and amazing summers. Alaska is beautiful if you can handle the long days of no sunlight. 🌸💕

I really like your mama’s hair. It looks pretty. 💕 She probably feels like she lost 10 pounds....Audrey is so cute and I love her positive/can do attitude. Even though math isn’t her strong subject, right now, she doesn’t let it bother her. That speaks volumes of having positive influences in her life. So mom & dad, give yourself a big pat on the back! It’s so crazy the extremes of temperatures there. I can’t imagine a 140 degree temperature difference....so how in the world do those life sized mosquitoes survive?! 😂

Every child is different, every home life is different so what works for you and your kids is what you should be doing. I wanted to homeschool my daughter but she's an only child and needed the social interaction with other kids her age. With all the violence and bullying that goes on in this world I do understand why anyone wouldn't want their kids going to a public or private school every day.
As for your mom's hair, I love that haircut, I would even consider having mine cut like that!! I have hair almost to my waist. My mom always made me have short hair when I was a kid and I can't stand short hair now but I would love to have it cut like that!! I had my hair cut shorter than hers right after I had my daughter because I knew I wouldn't have time to tend to it and that was 17yrs ago!! It's time for a change!!
Thanks for the info on moving to Alaska it was very informative!
Here in Michigan I have heard ppl say they didn't realize how much it would cost to heat their house and they end up losing it because they can't afford it. Which is really sad! When I was thinking about buying a house that was my first question finding out how much the heating or electric bill would be. That's one of those things you do not want to be unprepared for!!
I love it when you guys have those questions and answers videos!!!!
Thanks for sharing & have an awesome day 😀😀

Always going back to watch old vlogs (daily) and this reminded me that you guys (down the list of things to do for the family), should put a sauna in the back of your garage on the inside. We had one growing up and it was the best and kept us healthy during the flu months. They have kits etc., all price points and a lot of it can be built for super cheap. Just a thought. Hope you all had a great week! Stay blessed!

I feel the need to mention that what is the game changer for people that live in Fairbanks or North Pole is the Internet. Back in the day both Fairbanks and North Pole can feel very isolated. Too many of the people I was with were barracks rats; all they wanted to do is sit in their room and watch TV. The internet gives you a outlet to the outside world and to keep in touch with people. Apple Iphones where you can see literally the person and the room they are in. Your channel is the perfect example on Good and constructive use of the web. On how to stay informed and in touch; to prevent 'cabin fever' or a major case of becoming stir crazy! Now, mind you everything I knew of was individually owned back then like restraunts; there were no carl's jr or burger king or subway then. Fairbanks and North Pole has really evolved and have become somewhat modern. I loved it then; I would really love it now although i'm not 21 anymore. I would still love it.

Had to laugh at the tip around efficiency of the house because we just moved from Saranac Lake, NY (a nearly identical climate (including day length extremes) and often the coldest town in the Lower 48) to Colorado. The first time it dipped below freezing I was horrified by how drafty the townhouse was and had to remind myself that it was going to be back up to 50 in a couple days instead of the "Well below zero for weeks at a time" that I was used to for winters, LOL!

Your home schooling is insane and in a good way. You teach them personal finance and other subjects that are needed in life. Good job!!! 👍 When I was in school they taught a subject like that except it was called home economics and now no school teaches that and that’s why so many people have issues with personal finances.

Talking about the engine coolant. There is a differance in antifreeze mixtures that run threw your engine. Most peoples cars and trucks run on a 50/50 mix of antifreeze to water witch is fine for about -30° to -35° at max, but not for days at a time. It is very bad for the engine to let water/engine coolent to freeze in the engine because water expands when frozen. When the anti freeze or water in the engine freezes it expands and has no where to go so it breaks your engine. So it'll be either a few thousand dollars to replace your engine or you just buy a new car or truck

You can bring a most long gun (not black guns) through Canada but need to fill out the appropriate paperwork prior and present it at the border crossing, generally no handguns. I moved to Anchorage in January and then to Homer in April. Love it here, can't wait to visit the rest of the state!

I think about wanting to move there then I realize the cost of living vs the retirement pension I receive... I'll just stay in Ohio and hopefully make it back to Alaska to see some more than just Anchorage area!

No cookie cutter solutions in education. Each and every one of us has our own unique learning style. What works for each individual is what you gravitate towards. Wondrous variety in our differences is what makes life so rich and enjoyable. Thank you for the tips on Alaska life. Quietly considering relocation for some time. Many blessings. Many prayers. 🌻 P.S. The haircut is CUTE!!!

I can hear the newcomers now. Donning their Xtratuffs and thick wool coats lol. Here's a tip I'd Include.
1- Mylar Space Blankets are a must in an emergency car kit.

I definitely considered moving to Alaska. I really struggled with traveling home to see my family and how expensive it would be. Also I love traveling and I feel like it is rather isolated which would be hard.

You're mother looks absolutely stunning with her new haircut 💓 You two just keep convincing me to move to Alaska 💖❄⛄
I absolutely am convinced Alaska is where I am invested in making my home once I'm financially able too and plant my life with future family. I'm not used to that kind of winter for I've lived in Nevada way too long and I don't care for this town I live in, Las Vegas. It's nice for vacay but not to create a life in. It has definitely put half of the population in poverty due to treating the rich like royalty and it's very very saddening. I've always been in love with Alaska especially North Pole now as I watched your videos, I definitely would love to make North Pole my home. 💖❄⛄

Like your openness on homeschooling.! I was a homeschool parent for 13 years - worked best for us but have seen disasters in both homeschool and public school. Use your best judgement and use available resources.

I am raising 3 grandchildren and they are all different with different needs. One goes to a private Christian school because she has Asperger syndrome and they are the best school for her right now. The other 2 go to public schools, one in primary and one in high school. The high schooler goes to a school out of our school zone because he has A.D.D. and they offer the best program for him. I feel it is a personal choice for a parent to make according to their child’s needs. That is what is most important.
