    This kind of video is literally how I found your channel. I searched for “life in Alaska” and found you guys! I’m so fascinated by the unique extremes you have to live with. So please keep making this kind of content! On the subject of homeschooling, I’d love to know more about your schooling. I’m a kindergarten teacher and I love to learn about alternative education methods. I hope you share!

    In Minot, there no trees to block the wind so it can get to 40 below with a windchill factor making it 60 or 70 below. On those days it's illegal to go outside or to work because the cops don't want to gather humansicles.

    • @shyanmarie4405
      @shyanmarie4405 5 років тому +4

      True true. In ND, it gets dangerously cold. And no, it isn't illegal to go outside at those temps, the news just states that traveling is not recommended and you just get turned around by a cop and told to go back home and be safe. But yes there are days whole interstates and roads are closed down for sometimes even 2 days at a time.

    • @connierosario9474

      @@shyanmarie4405 I'm sorry, I was referring to Minot AFB, back in the late 80s. We'd wake up, turn to channel 9 I think it was, green, go to work, yellow, call your chief, see if you absolutely need to work, red, you do not leave your house under any circumstances. Military are real sticklers to rules. I wasn't aware it didn't apply to civilians as well. Thank you for the correction.

    Gosh, I miss my mother so, much it hurts bad! I was very close to her. Miss having fun with her! A mother is a treasure for sure! They are to be respected & loved!! It’s heartbreaking how some are treated. My mother was my best friend! I hate that cancer stole the living life out of her. Miss her...show your sweet momma in more videos. I did that one year here in Indiana-throwing water into the air. This year we have had very very mild temps - 40s and 50s! This morning I had the doors open - tonite we are going into the 30s for about a week. We have been so lucky this year - very minimal snow that melts the next day.

A few people were found frozen to death in downtown chicago :( so horribly sad. We are used to it being cold but not usually this cold for this many days. But we're all preparing. I’ve lived in Eagle River the past 12 years and for the past 5-6 years, we’ve had only a handful of below zero weather, but my first 3 years here, it got down to -20 pretty regularly during the winter. I worked at Fort Yukon in November and December 2012 and it got down to -40, but when I went home and stopped in Fairbanks, it was in the teens and snowing.
    Fairbanks is not for the faint at heart! And for those that can ski or snowboard at Mount Aurora or Birch Hill, I gotta hand it to them!

    We just got back from North Pole Alaska a week ago, we spend Christmas Vacation up there in a cozy cabin. Temps ranged from 0 to -24 . The one thing that surprised me so much about the cold was that when it is in the negative temps like -24, any moisture in your nose freezes up and feels like giant boogers. LOL Sorry for the TMI. Your videos helped us out greatly in preparing for this trip, thank you

    Did subscribe! I’m watching this video and can’t comprehend what it’s like with that extreme cold. And then you said you and the kids were going to get wood! WHAT? You’re not taking them out in the woods! Glad they stayed in garage. Loved the education though about the cold.

    Mr and Mrs Somers, you should really invest into some artic liners. They are green and very smooth; you can find them in any surplus store; there is one in downtown fairbanks. They are good to -80 below zero. I learned this first hand back from brimfrost in '89. The liners are very inexpensive; It is a really good investment.

    when I moved to Laramie, Wyoming some time back, a friend there told me this story that he felt I really needed to know. I believe he said it was very cold maybe 40ty below or it might have been colder but a woman who was just hired at the college and just moved into the area decided to do some running to get to work faster and felt it would warm her up. She was very athletic but was not prepared for what was going to happen to her. She got to work OK but soon started to split up blood and within an hour was dead. The air she was breathing in as she ran did not have a chance to warm up above freezing and the tender soft tissue in her lungs began to freeze and of course could no longer take in oxygen. So no running in cold weather guys it can kill you if you breath in the cold directly

    Cool - literally lol. I’m originally from PA but never been in weather that cold. We used to go to Potter County PA in the winter a lot. Used to pack extra warm clothes and blankets/sleeping bag, bagged salt and cat litter. In central Florida now - 79 degrees and sunny today! You all should come to Disney World and Legoland!

      Jan Brady wow! We had a family friend who had a cabin in Potter. Anyone was welcome to stay there. I loved it! No television- had an old wood burning kitchen stove. Very rustic. I liked the winters there but I think my favorite time of year to stay there was the fall because the colors were gorgeous!

    Coldest I have experienced is -42 Celsius with a -48 Celsius windchill value (Canada) and, I do not have a vehicle - I walk and take the city bus. When it is in the -30 Celsius range though before windchill value I plan carefully so I do not have to walk much or wait long for a bus. Additionally to stay safe in these temps I pack extra socks, hand warmers, and wear layers.

    I can’t believe you went outside after getting out of the shower Jessica, I would have had icicles hanging off my head, I was shivering 🥶 looking at you. I just can’t over the way your Children help Bert with the wood for the fireplace, they are so amazing, and all cute as a button! I have never tried scrambled eggs with cream cheese but seeing how Evelynn was enjoying them I may have to give them a try! Enjoy your evening and try to stay warm! ❤️

    I am not sure how well I could survive -40 F.!?!? It is wonderful to see all of the beautiful snow! The kids are so amazing at wanting to help Bert with cutting the fire wood. Today in Northwest Ohio it got up to 50+ F.
