  • It can happen in the blink of an eye. Your outboard motor somehow jumped off the transom and is now fully submersed. Even worse - you are fishing in saltwater.
    This doesn't spell the death of your motor, but you do need to know what to do to prevent expensive damage from occurring. In this short video from The Fishing DVD, we will show you what you can do yourself to aid the recovery of your motor before getting it professionally serviced.

    Probably something additional worth mentioning Steve. The copper wound stator under the flywheel will have salt water in it that gets wicked right into the winding by surface tension. If it's not replaced and corrodes over time it will create a no start, no run situation just out of the blue one day. If you take the flywheel off and remove the stator winding you can then use WD40 etc to soak it in liquid WD40 for 24 hours to displace all the salt and water. it will dry out with heat when you run the OB - but you don't want the salt left behind in it to create hard to diagnose problems later down the track.
    A new stator and if it has one a lighting coil are pretty cheap to buy and replace so worth doing. It it was a Merc it would also have coil packs for each cylinder for the loop charged stating system - same deal eithger get them clean of salt or replace for longevity sake.
    Basically electrickery and salty water just don't get along well.
    CRC put out a electrical contacts spray cleaner that again would be worth a go in all the electronics / connections.
    Sure thing getting all the mechanicals protected from corrosion is important & you covered that well - but corroded electronics like stator (some of the older evinrudes etc had points sets under the flywheel as well) will certainly leave you stranded at the worst possible time at sea!.
    If you ever remake this vid - add a little more about the importance of electrics after a dunking in salt water.
    All in all a great effort for those who find themselves in need.
    Cheers & cold beers from me, big ears!

    One of the main advantages of owning a 2 stroke instead of a 4 stroke - if it gets drowned - you still have a very good chance of getting it running again.

    Did this with all of my power equipment after hurricane sandy. Two backpack blowers, two snow throwers, a lawn mower, a weed wacker and two big power washers. Rinse them in fresh water. Change oil, drain carbs and fuel, plugs out, purge cylinders and lube with oil. One by one they all started and ran. All good to this day.

    I flipped a new 2001 , 2 stroke 6hp merc in a freshwater lake. Got the boat upright with the motor. It started right up . Ran it about an hour to dry everything out. Has been running fine to this day. Saltwater immersion a whole different story.

    A few years ago i lost my old inherited 2hp Yamaha for 1,5 years at the bottom of a lake(sweet-water, community drinking water) when my boat got loose after a big storm(the short version), a fellow found it a meter under the waterline and brought it back to his place, how it ended back quickly in my possession is a funny story, but not for now. Anyhow;
    Removed the covers and cleaned all the gunk that got in there, this has a built-in tank and i am very cautious to close the venting after every run so no water had gotten in that way (and no gasoline out). removed the spark plug a yanked the starter-rope to get water out of the cylinder, there was none. checked the spark and it was good, put everything together again and it started on the first pull with the original gas, and have worked since... Japan makes creepy good machines.
    The boat however, that the motor sat on, was never found again...

    This happened to my 2004 Corolla once, was parked in an underground parking garage, a hurricane happened and the garage was flooded to 2 feet deep.A week later the water receded and I let everything dry first, then changed the oil and spark plugs and it started right up, drove it for 7 more years until it got rear ended

    Just load it up with Kerosene through the spark plug holes.
    Those cylinders would not havr bren completely covered in oil at all. Only one side because you never turned the motor around. Just had it laying on one side. Kero has oil in it even diesel will do and much tbinner then oil alone so gets past the rings faster and into the crank case. A good motor should have a sump plug with easy access to drain anything out.

    this is great advice but if one thing i would of added is to make sure the engine kill switch is disconnected before pull the pull start with plugs out... Reason for this as i have learnt from 26 years racing powerboats and a mechanic is that the spark or electricity always take shortest path and the coil pack being closest to the earth (engine block) and forms a crack cause it is the shortest path and this unknown to the owner and causes engine to misfire and running rough intermittently and dont ever find the fault.

    • @eg8475
      @eg8475 5 років тому +1

      Are you saying that pulling the the starter-rope with the spark-plugs out and kill switch connected, but not engaged(yes there is a difference) may damage the coil? if not repeated over and over continually for several days, how?
      Please go into detail in what you meant with the spark when trying to rid the cylinder of water residues with park plugs out(not connected)
      With your explanation would it not be preferable to remove the coil entirely before pull-start with the plugs out? if the coil has cracks, it is not worth saving, at least not with a boat engine. Shellac can seal and save cracked coils, but that depends on the coil´s outer layer being acceptable to shellac.

      Clean the carb out, blow it all off with an air hose. then spray some fogging oil onto the carb parts and reassemble. connect fuel system choke and try to start. once running keep spraying small bursts of fogging oil into air intake until white smoke is coming out. you might have to restart the engine if it chokes out on fogging oil that's normal.

    Hello ! Was out on the water for an hr no issues with this engine. I stopped it for 25 mins and went to start again and it wouldn't. It's my first outboard and didn't know you have to put the throttle on a certain a position and then pull the rope, I have been pulling the rope without throttle on set position and It has always taken me 7 pulls or more to start it so I think I flooded the motor. How do I de flood? is there such a thing?
    I tried putting throttle all the way open and choke closed to possibly deflood and cranked it ten to fifteen times and then tried with throttle on the start position to crank but have had no luck starting, tried also with choke on for a few strokes with no luck either. Could I have fouled up the spark plug?

    I drowned my outboard after flipping the tinnie and didn’t have safety lanyard on and outboard was running when under salt water, I used methylated spirits two litres straight into both pots cranked it slowly then drained and I put around two litres of two stroke oil in both pots then cranked then I ran a higher oil to petrol mix then idle it to temperature then give her some revs underload in a tank
    Started the outboard the other day after a few months of not useing and started and ran fine

Point is.. it will displace water from the Ignition wires .. do your best to dry them in the field.. then use the WD-40 on the plug wires. Use Real Oil in your cylinders ! Rinse and dry all your electrical connections, then use electronic contact cleaner on each one.

    What a load of crap, putting a shed load of oil down the plug holes without then trying to get most of the oil out is a good way of hydrahydraulic-ing the motor up and bending the conrods. You need to get most of that oil out before refitting the spark plugs.

    good luck lifting my engine like that.. HAHAHA! you need a strong man or a crane.. Dry weight my engine weigh 50 kilograms, with water inside it weighs much much more, so what you do from the start is a FAIL!... take off the cover first!.. if the engine is full of water it will be like 20 kilo less in weight without the water in the housing.. You guys are Americans.. amateurs.. you can make guns and stuff but watching you save an engine make me cry. YOU ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG!!

      They might be doing it wrong in some people's opinion but what makes you think these blokes in the video are American? I can assure you they are not United states of America citizens or any other nationality in north, central or south america .
