Our 2-stroke engine was fully submerged in the ocean because I put off fixing the transom on our dinghy. My bad! Dont procrastinate, thats what I learnt.
In this video I show you how I fixed this engine and got it running again, good as new. Dont be scared, anyone can do it, step by step.

Well detailed "operation" .. Glad it all worked out OK and indeed "Learning by Doing" seems to be a very appropriate title....
Thanks for sharing...
Thanks 👍
the joy of a 2 stroke.. easy to fix..
I seem to remember you pulling a clock apart when you were about 12, and being disappointed that it still didn’t work after you’d put it all back together. You were very successful with Mirjam’s camera after it’s dunking in the sea though. Well done with the outboard motor xx
Hah, there were a couple of motorbike engines as well that didnt work after I'd "fixed them". Learning By Doing
The joys of a two-stroke. When I was racing ThunderCats, we would drown an engine every couple of weeks, but with a bit of fuel flushed through the system they would get up and go within a half an hour without any dramas. There’s no need to change the gearbox oil as it is sealed, or at least it should be.
We revived a similar engine that had been left underwater for three months by doing the above, and chipping off the barnacles and algal growth. Would not have been economically possible with a small four stroke.
Yep, I agree, so nice to have a very simple and light engine. We changed the gearbox oil only as I hadn't done it in about a year and my hands were already dirty.
Learning from your mistakes, correcting, and sharing. 👍
Trying to mate. Thanks for watching.
Great video Vernon thank you. Am now almost brave enough to pull my carb apart and change the gear oil!
2-strokes are thankfully very simple. If in doubt take photos of everything as you take it apart.
Thank you for sharing this 👍
You bet!
Vernon it's a Tohatsu nothing can go wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if it could run underwater or at least damn well nearly.
Haha, with a snorkel maybe
Great video Vernon, but you didn't protect the crankshaft/ bearings, next time just poor some diesel down the intake after Carby removal, fill the crankcase and pull the starter cord to clear. But for a photographer that was very good tutorial. I'm a marine mechanic by the way
Ok, thanks for the tip. I filled the cylinders up with lube twice through the spark plug holes. Wouldn’t the carb intakes only go into the cylinders heads too?
Awesome you make it look easy, time for a 15hp 4 stroke outboard...
Oh heck no! I wont have a 4 stroke outboard unless there is absolutely no other option.
Good to know , most people throw them out .
My 4 stroke 8 hp tohatsu drowned yesterday taking it off the row boat. My hamstring also stretched. Ugh. Crappy day for me yesterday
Agh damn, sorry to hear that mate. Hope she can be resuscitated
I would have repeated the whole process again , especially the gear oil and oil into the cylinders . I had a power boat sink . It was under water 2 weeks . I raised the boat , changed the carb , did a full tune up , bought some cheap oil and did about 6 oil changes on it . Much to my suprise the motor ran great but the insurance company considered it to be a total loss and paid me . Maybe it worked out for the best , who knows how many other things would have rusted or seized up over time . I was just glad at the end of it all the insurance co. paid me .
Good outcome for you! Gear oil doesn't even need changing and its sealed. I sprayed lubricant into the cylinders 3-4 times and once the engine heats up when its running it will never rust inside. Its all the small things on the outside that will corrode over time.
Bugger, that's not what you need, hope you get it sorted
She seems good as new!
Great news mate, you can now add outboard mechanic, to your resume. Lol
I’m thinking you have overfilled the gearbox it should be filled from the bottom with motor vertical till oil just dribbles out leaving a air pocket at the top. Check your manual though. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Bottom hole is the oil drain top is the fill, stamped next to each one. I couldn’t fill while vertical as I had no way to do it. Normally the oil bottle has a tiny tube with it especially for that but my oil didn’t so I had to just use a funnel
PB BLASTER IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN SAVE A DUMB A.. MISTAKE LIKE THIS...
Hi guys, we had a Tohatsu 8 and had to clean it out when we flipped it on a shore break at Keppel. More embarrassing than anything.😂
It’s only embarrassing if you do the same again the next day.
Same engine here drowned yesterday. Heavy little motor I’ll tell you that.
Hey Vernon, look at meeeee I’m first! eeeelw
Yes you are! Speedy gonzalas. Hope you liked it
