  • Do you work at a major commercial gym? Would you be willing to appear in a video and talk about your experience?
Let me know in the comments!
What’s up guys! Jeff from Sorta Healthy here! In today’s video we’ll be discussing what it’s like being a personal trainer at LA Fitness. In order to learn as much about LA fitness as possible, I interviewed three trainers (1 wanted to stay anonymous) and did a good amount of my own research as well.
I interviewed Dennis and Sammy and you can find there websites and social media down below. Show them some love!
    Dennis' Stuff:
    youtube: healthpodsimp
    instagram: healthpodsimp
    Sammy's Stuff:
    sheikydeeky.com/
Anyways, some of the stuff I asked these LA fitness guys were:
How much money do LA Fitness personal trainers make?
How does pay work for LA Fitness personal trainers?
Is LA Fitness a good place to be a personal trainer?
Is LA Fitness a good place to work in general?
These are the sorts of questions that we’ll be answering in this video. Of course, we’ll cover a bunch of other things along the way too!
Thanks for the love and support guys! We appreciate it!

Thanks for the chat Jeff! Hope anyone considering working for LAF has a better understanding of what they're getting into. Want to make a quick note on the Certified Trainer vs Master Trainer pay as its a little complicated. As a certified trainer you do not make 25% percent, you make a fixed ~$10 per session. When you are promoted to Master, you can get 25% of the cheaper session rate and 30% of the higher session rate. So if you are new it's possible that you could be stuck making $10 per session for several months(someone in the comments below said it took 8 months for their promotion).
Best way to minimize the time in the Certified Trainer phase and start making money is ask your district VP for a clear time frame and criteria for promotion and hold them to their word. I've worked with some great trainers that got the run around for months when they clearly deserved the promotion, so not every LAF district is going to be easy when it comes to this.

Thanks for everything Dennis! Is it possible that payment for certified and master trainers is slightly different gym to gym?
I had a lot of people say that certified trainers get 25% and master trainers get 30%. It seems like the ranges listed in the video would still be pretty close, but I want people to be as informed as they can be.
      Thanks again!

I've worked at L.A Fitness as a Personal Training Director, I didn't have the best experience, but it made me realize I should be a trainer because I only enjoyed giving the physical assessment part of the sale gig. I quit the job and got my personal training certification and started my own business.

@@kartikthakkar622 I honestly was not making much in the beginning because the gym I worked at was in a low income area. But when I got transferred to a busier gym it only became a little better. I'd say less than $300 (I wasn't good at selling) if you're good at sales go for it!

Best way to go. LAF is just a place for youth cut your teeth because of the volume of people you'll train, but their sales tactics are piss poor.

Thank you Jeff for doing this and allowing me to be apart of this. I did want to clarify regarding the potential to make $42 an hour. The trainers at my location with the most clients, they all reported it took them 9 - 12 months to get as busy as they are, including working both the 5am and 5pm shift, and they still have days that are not busy. The potential for $42 per hour is possible, but don't expect $42 an hour every hour you are willing to work, rare for anyone to get 16 sessions a day 5 days a week or more, at least without some nonpaid downtime.

The thing with master trainer is that you have to do x amount sessions a month. The clients you have are staying with you .then you have no room for new clients as a master trainer. I would work 5-7 hours non-stop. Very good learning experience.

I have been working at LA Fitness for a month now, thankfully they start all new trainers at master level pay (otherwise they don't last long), and I must confirm this is a very accurate video, we have a master trainer that has been there for 11 years, and one that has been there 4 years, they have solid schedules built up, and have 1 or 2 days of split shifts. I think the flexibility, full focus on clients instead of sales, and regular clientele is what has kept them with LA for so long. I will have to talk to the 11-year trainer more about her experience, but she is very busy haha. Great video, it's nice to see other people's perspective on LA Fitness, thanks Jeff.

At my LAF there is one person whose been there for 10 years, works part time, and only has 16 clients, ~50 sessions per month , and probably takes home $900 month, coming in 4 days a week here and there.
another has been there for about 4 years, and as the only female trainer she takes the lion's share of clients that sign up for training, at about ~80 sessions/ WEEK. unfortunately for the rest of us, Most older women ages 35-70 just prefer to work with her rather than anyone else.
If you ever want to chat about your experience let me know! Interested to here others' experience with LAF

Great breakdown! I started working for LA Fitness after the lockdowns (in June of 2021) and became a Master Trainer after about eight months. Now I am starting my own in-home training business and plan to quit by June of this year. It was convenient for me these last few years because I had to work another job and didn't have to worry about sales. I'm looking forward to taking things up to the next level! 😁💪🏿🏋🏿‍♂️🥊

It's minimum wage + commission unless you have been working there with a good retention rate. It's more experience and not productive when it comes to promoting training. So like 16-30 unless you don't talk to management. Some of the sales people don't know how to sell and use emotions to help their case. All in all, the gym is just like others.

I work at a large gym. But there's only 2 locations. It used to be a Golds Gym but they sold it to our gym. My gym charges 35$ for 30-minute sessions. After taxes, I get 12.50$ per session. I'm in my 7th month so I'm still new. I have 25 clients. My schedule is completely flexible but when I started I stayed all day until I built up my clients. Severing the evening clients is a task I'm trying to do. We have a sales team that does all the sales. So I don't have to look for clients. They just assign them to me, Lately I've felt burnt out. Not sure if I'm past the honeymoon phase but I think it's my scheduling and programming organization. I love helping people. But my whole day seems consumed with texts, programming, and fitness. I don't want it to feel like work. But it's starting to. The gym I'm at is a great place to start. A league of other trainers where it doesn't feel competitive but more supportive. I've learned so much from all of them

Me and Alexis personally, when we work splits, eat around 4/4:30 AM, lunch around 10, and dinner around 2:30 or 3 with a snack when we get home around 7 or 8. While it’s not ideal, it works for us and we’ve found eating earlier helps us from eating too many snacks in between sessions or worrying/thinking about eating during the day.

@@static2173 I’m sure it depends on the specific gym, but the pay is decent. 4 levels of trainers that have different pay. But the gym I was at they do nothing to help you get clients.
