- What's up guys, Jeff from Sorta Healthy here! In this weeks video we'll be discussing garage personal training studios or garage gyms. What are the pros and cons of having a garage training studio? Who should consider starting a garage fitness facility, and who shouldn't? These are all questions that we aim to answer in this video today.
For better or worse, many trainers tend to glorify having a garage studio, which to some extent, who can blame them? Having one of these garage spaces can be a pretty cool thing, but there are some less often discussed downsides to that lifestyle as well.
As always, we try to keep it real and tell both sides of the story as best as we can.
There are some real garage personal training studios featured in this video, and those studios we're originally shared on the subreddit r/personal training. If you're a trainer looking to up your game, that subreddit can be a useful place to explore.
Thanks for the continued support everyone! We love ya!

I’m based in London, UK and have spent the last 2 years in a commercial gym and made the leap to setting up my own studio from an abandoned garage! This channel has helped me massively with my business growth!
So glad you’ve found the content helpful!
Thank you for featuring my gym in your video Jeff. Keep creating great content. 👍
Thanks for showcasing it! I thought it was really great!
Love the channel! Your videos helped me pass my ace exam
Congrats! Thanks for your support!
In the process of transforming my garage into a fitness studio. Good to see both pros and cons!
Good luck!
Great video. I live in the midwest and I know a couple of people that are doing a garage/home gym setup to train there clients in. This way its beats the cold months and their clients love it. I am in the process of doing the same saving up to buy a home first.
That works for beating the cold! Best of luck as you get started!
UA-cam has a video for almost everything. I have a detached garage gym with insulation and ac/heat and a bathroom. Thought about becoming a PT and training people in my garage and poof this video appears. So thank you. Apart from checking with my county to see if they're legal, should I check with my HOA? They can be worse than the police😂
You’re welcome! And yes, I would DEFINITELY check with your HOA. They may or may not be open to you having excess traffic/cars/people on a regular basis.
Newly certified personal trainer! You’re videos have helped with sooo much. I’m putting together a garage studio soon but was wondering if I should take care of the business side of things first before I make any purchases for tax write offs. A video on strictly the business side of things when you’re first starting your own personal training company would be great!
Congrats on getting started! I would take care of the business side of things first to some extent. Get everything set up and get a business bank account/credit card as well. It just helps to keep everything a bit more organized when it comes to tax time.
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation I appreciate you!

Not sure if you would know or not, but I have a building on my property that is built similar to a garage. Concrete floor and garage door. I wonder if this still applies to the law of a garage facility or if it means that it’s illegal on the property period.
Unfortunately that’s something you would have to ask your local zoning department. It definitely varies a bit.
If your business is an LLC, wouldn’t you be protected under that if there was any injury on your property?
You might be protected but your assets, your house being the one in question probably wouldn’t be. It’s definitely something you’d want to chat with local insurance agents or lawyers about.
Them being illegal anywhere is a miscarriage of justice
Honestly, I agree. It’s your property. You should be able to use it in any reasonable way you want to
How did you check if it was illegal in your town?
Ehh, just build them for clients at their own house if they have a garage. This depends on how self-motivated your clients are to workout on their own.
