  • Let's open a new M25 engine & start it for the first time. Sounds like a simple task right? Quality control in the spark plug division must have had the day off when this one made it through. There are several other issues that we need to address yet, but we'll get it. Thank you all for watching and commenting, you guys are GREAT!

    What I’ve done to eliminate any arching on my Knucklehead, is instead of using 4.5v / 3AA batts, I use 2AA / 3V using a “dummy” AA battery to reduce the voltage, and that worked perfect 🤙

      @steam212  Рік тому +2

      Hi 133, I really do need to make a dummy battery. I have seen the advantages and understand the idea. Great suggestion man. Thank you for the jogging my memory 👍

      @@steam212 These are the ones I used for mine. Definitely give it a try on your Jin engines, it worked perfectly.
      Something else I did was to put a small piece of thin walled silicone tube over the ceramic spark plug body, which holds the black plug boot better and offers a little insulation

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Рік тому +2

      @@mhz-yn9gh those black boots are terrible. I am convinced that they are conductive somehow. This spark plug is just bad no matter how much we insulate the porcelain. It is arching through at the base not running down the side. I will have to take a piece of nylon and drill through it and fill the hole with a brass rod, 1 dummy battery coming up. Thanks again for the suggestion, I really do appreciate it 👍

      It is in multiple pieces on a cookie sheet right now, I thought it needed a time out to think about how it acted in front of all of you. I will go through it and see if we can improve it's attitude when it is all done. 👍

    It looks like the lower tube on the water tank is a bit tightly bent. I'd lift the tank up too, since having your cold tank above level on the hot engine will improve the thermosiphon pressure.

    Mr 212! You have had bad luck with spark plugs or I have had good luck. Welcome back! I have also felt the call to clean up the garage (a bit) over the break.
    Regarding the cooling, it it possible that it's not meant to circulate, merely replenish if the water round the jacket boils off? Like some kind of put-put boat? Mine has never go that hot though. And as you saw in the last video, my M25 recently donated it's ignition for the full-sized projet, the Chore Boy.
    N ice to see you back, my friend :)

      Hi Mr. Thomas, I'm glad to be back at it again with a cleaned up work space. It may very well be their intention of using the external hopper as a way to keep it full. I really enjoyed watching your last video, I don't blame you for parting the ignition from your m25, the Chore Boy is much more interesting 😉 (I'm looking and asking a few buddies for an original carb for you) Keep up the GREAT work and GREAT videos 👍

    Nice looking engine, love side shaft engines. I never see anyone talk about spark plug gap on these models. How much of an effect, if any does it have on model performance. My M92 runs pretty well and came with barely any gap but most models I see on UA-cam come with huge gaps.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  10 місяців тому +1

      The ignition coil on these little engines will really throw a spark, so the gap on the plug can be fairly wide, but I have ran into multiple plugs that will arc down the side of the insulator instead of jumping the gap on the electrode, and don't get me started on the issues I've had with those horrible black rubber boots grounding out the spark.

      Hi Beaver, have you been watching through window? I did retard the ignition a little and it seemed to help a little bit but then decided that it needs to come apart and have an exorcism "the power of fuel compels you". I can't believe the number of issues encountered by a part with no moving parts. I wish Champion still made model spark plugs, they were great. Maybe if they stepped up the quality control just a bit, the failure rate would lower.

    Hi Matt. Ask the squirrel for some help on the M25. After vlogging on the next turbine, can you do a update on past projects? Just curious about the show mans, the beam, and of course the hit and missuses. Missuses, is that a word?

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Рік тому +1

      Hi Joe, I can ask the squirrel for help but his attention span may pose a problem. Maybe we'd be better off calling for an exorcism? Absolutely we can do a video on some of the previous projects. I'll have to bring the showman's engine back out to the shop (it lives inside now) the missuses said it was fine 😉

    More typical Microcosm bullshit. They're good looking little engines but they're poorly designed/built in a lot of ways. Guarantee that carb is part of the problem, cam and spark timing are likely way off in the rhubarb. I'd expect valve sealing issues to crop on on the regular.
    My M-17b has been such a fussy little shit that I've all but given up on ever doing anything with it. It won't even think about taking a load. Barely even runs at all.

      Perhaps. Then again see what our friend Mr 212 can do with a cheap Enjomor hit and miss, or the fun I have on my channel - Microcosm M90, tractors etc.... Else we're stuck facing $2400 asking price for Paul Breisch models. I do agree that some retailers charge too much

      This M-25 engine here isn't on Stirlingkit's site yet, but I found them listed on eBay for $320, which is a pretty safe bet as to what StirlingKit will charge. For that same $320, at time of commenting I can pop down to AMain Hobbies and get:
      2 OS 15LAs
      An OS 35AX
      OS 46AX(I already have two of these and they're bad ass engines too)
      OS 55AX
      OS 65AX
      Saito FA-40, FA-62
      DLE20, 30
      the OS 65AX and 120AX are both priced at just $360. 4-cycle I can get an FS-62V for 375, a Saito 82 for 350. Can also get a Saito FG-11 for 399.
      And that's just aircraft engines. If I want a surface engine I'm spoiled for choice! Literally over a dozen good engines for...well, actually under $200, nevermind under the $320 I found a Microcosm M-25 listed for.
      I'm sorry, but if these things are gonna command OS and Saito prices I'm going to demand OS and Saito quality for my money. If they don't want to give me that quality I'll just go buy another OS or Saito that I know is going to run like a swiss watch, be built like a brick shithouse, and make stupid good power. If I buy another microcosm engine, itt'l be second hand and for nowhere near asking price; I won't pay more than about $100 for a single cylinder example.
      When I first got my M-17b I had ideations of collecting the whole line. Now I can barely even bring myself to look at that damn thing without thinking 'Fuck me I have a dozen planes in my boneyard waiting for engines but I bought that thing instead'. It lives on top of my fridge tucked away behind an old cereal box out of sight and out of mind.

      @@ThomasPCGuruENGINES I will give Microcosm a little credit on this one, though. They're actually using a copper sealing washer around the plug! They tried one of those stupid shitty green o-rings around the plug in my M-17b and it leaks like a sieve. Prolly part of why my engine runs like absolute dog shit; compression leaks from basically everywhere it can leak except the head gasket(Somehow). And because of how they machined the head it's absolutely impossible to get a copper saeling washer down in there without going dull-beaver-wielding-an-apprentice on it. Which I might just do one of these days as a stress relief; just go ham with the dremel and see if I can at least get a copper sealing washer around the plug. Or ruin the head. IDC either way.
