Dude I overstated that...I use straight 95 octane car petrol with about 3 to 5 % motor mower 2 stroke oil added. Oil is ASE30 motor mower oil. If they don't start first pop, do yo the needles until you feel resistance then back it open 1/4 to a half turn. These days it would be poor luck indeed if it didn't run
I have done some decent paint jobs in the past (3 small traction engine kits) but I'm generally nervous about it. Matt over on Steam 212 channel does some beautiful careful paint jobs on his models which do really enhance them, so while I used to not mind the brass, now I'm changing my mind to agree with you. And now you've got me thinking...challenge for me!
Funny isn't it how You Tubers get these engines and they run first time out of the box. The heap of sh*t I received refuses to run no matter what. Useful as a paperweight but that's about all.
What have you tried? Are you near me Ian?? If it's any help, there's a troubleshooting video I made here. [no spark?ua-cam.com/video/cJmN8kTOnHw/v-deo.html] If it has spark, squirt a little fuel direct in the carb to see if your carb is blocked. I only got my H73 running properly today after months of going back to it for a few hours...needed ignition, hall sensor, valve seating work, advance timing and rework of the governor. Not basic stuff. The V twin R28 runs good now but will then go off one piston like many of the youtuber's v twins. Bigger youtubers than me get preferntial treatment samples I suspect

I just wish they were painted in the proper colours, rather than polished brass!
