So a few years back I lost my Dying Light disc and I just bought the game on the like 70% sale deal. I had like 100 hours on one save beforehand, but I wasn't much if a Night player. I decide to stay out after dark for the fun of it, and I shine my flashlight at a Volatile on the street from the very top of one of the blue apartment buildings in the slums, thinking nothing's gonna happen. Apparently I'd forgotten what fucking game I was playing, cause I hopped down to one of the balconies for a closer look at the Volatiles, and I hear breathing getting louder. That fucker was actively climbing up the wall like Spider-Man and went right past me. When I tell you I froze irl, I FROZE. I did NOT remember them being able to do that kind of shit.
Something about the volatiles that is one of their spookiest features, if not the spookiest- is the really really good sound design that went into their footsteps. They sound heavy yet agile, kinda gross and fleshy at the same time. It is exactly what a volatile would sound like. But not only that, it's how they sound relative to the player. Something about it is so grounded in reality, it really does sound like something hyperrealistic that's happening irl, I've almost taken my headphones off a few times when I hear it. That feeling is incredible in the context of the scary nighttime. Just that one part of the game has always been pure perfection to me
And then sometimes they sound closer then they are or they sometimes go around or go like a long way to where they think you will be and then u look behind and you see none and it just terrifies the FCK out of u
the sound design in dying light 1 in general is pure nightmare fuel, the noises that you hear, volatiles, the music, and the overall feel of nighttime is just terrifying
They really don't remind me of things in I AM LEGEND and I am legend was a good plot but movie overall wasn't really that great, what the Volatiles reminded me of were the Reapers in BLADE 2
Maybe the volatiles in dying light 2 are more vulnerable to UV lights. Perhaps their armor around the chest would open up while being shined by UV light. Revealing the weakness that let's you deal more damage to it.
Or you can be like me and brute force it. Just need to have a few sips of the drink from DL 1 that makes you take 1 damage for every hit and you’re golden… er, bloodied!
You know what’s a good game mechanic to add in the new game?? Baracading and putting wood planks on the empty houses for defense when a horde of zombies chase you
Temporary bases would be dope. Would be dope if you can choose you favorite spot and just keep supplies there and with having to check up on it make sure it’s strong enough to last nights or run into for defense and fight off whatever chases you.
@@barackputin that would be pretty boss actually. Always liked state of decay but I’ve seen it still falls flat in some places actually. Would be a nice system if implemented well.
I’d argue that the bio-weapon and normal volatile evolution can co-exist. Iirc the weapon wasn’t responsible for the initial outbreak, so it could just be a separate, quicker, and far more direct method of reaching volatile status.
That's fair, that and the countryside spillage only came after the events of DL1 base game, and burning up that Antizin was a stupid move on the GRE's part, even the bottles Kyle stashed couldn't have prevented/stemmed the outbreak on a scale that large. Imagine if the virus mutated in water and suddenly fish zombies...
Fun fact, sabit, after begging for mercy to crane, we can hear him clearly say « we shall rise ». I really hope that in dying light 2, volatiles evolved to become more intelligent and maybe from groups with a leader, etc.
I don’t watch a lot of dying light 2 gameplay but mabye there could be like nests we have to destroy or unless it was in dying light 2 gameplay but we did had similarities from dying light nest there is misson where Raheem tell us to bomb the building filled with zombies but mabye we have to destroy like few of them to make places safer
Pro tip: dont complete the first night time mission and spend a good time farming supplies. It’ll never turn night unless you do that mission. Once I learned that years ago, I had a pretty good start on completely fresh saves. Spent about 5 hours farming lock picks and ambulances. Had a decent amount of crafting supplies too so I could make something in pinch if I made a mistake as I was leveling. I mean, not that you can’t just play normally, but after years, sometimes you just want push through the first couple of quests. Also, I’d definitely farm hidden supply drops and gun spawns and put em in my cache for mid to late game enemies and quick money.
ITS SO FUCKING GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK! I can't wait to see your dying light 2 content! Also, when I started the night mission and you see the volatile through the fence I paused the game and went to the store and bought a 6 pack of beer to give me courage for the rest of the mission lol
I actually enjoyed going out at night in the countryside expansion because of the buggy. It was both terrifying and exciting having several volatiles chasing after you while you got the pedal to the medal🤣
A really interesting and insightful video CK. It's good to see you back producing content again. Shame about the overwriting in parts but nevertheless really enjoyed it..
My weekend already starting off well with a new upload from you. Love the vid. I don't mind the more armoured look the new Volatiles are rocking in DL2 and I can't wait to see the new special infected introduced to us in the game, hopefully in the same way as they did in Dying Light 1 where each special infected had a special cutscene revealing them.
anyone else notice when you damage a parkour zombie enought and they start begging, saying, "no please. Dont," that it sounds very human. if i recall the mother said something along the lines of "There is human left in every zombie." Just as she is, except shes conscious. Could it be that for an instant you can smack a zombies humanity back into them if they arent "Too far gone"
@@johncruisethebaldguy1710 i disagree since you can kill infected conventionally. You can snap their necks and kill them, you don't have to destroy the brain
Really love how they designed the volatile it turns the game from the daytime run and gun parkour game into a hardcore stealth game. I kinda hope that they change the design so that the volatile is invulnerable unless under some kind of UV light cause as deadly as they are in groups at night it’s ludicrously easy to go to town on one with a shotgun. Having them only be briefly vulnerable when under UV light would definitely help emphasize running over fighting at night even into the late game.
Its not as easy on new game plus let alone nightmare. You cant run and gun on that even with all the fancy weapons. I would still prefer to have all the fun weapons from DL1 DLCs. If they werent fun and people havent enjoyed them, they wouldnt pop as many weapon dlcs.
I mean, if you go to town at one with a shotgun, won't more turn up at your ass due to sound? But I agree that they probably shouldn't be opponents you are supposed to take on
@@rockhoggaming it’s honestly better this way. The guns in the first game, were either overpowered or underpowered. There wasn’t an in-between and it ruined the gameplay sometimes, not to mention the sound of the weapon would make every viral within a 20 mile radius charge you. So considering there wasn’t a chase sequence in the first game, it would make using your weapons at night obsolete pretty much in the second game. But that’s just my opinion.
My first nighttime mission I accidentally fell into the ocean and, after a moment, came to realize that volatiles couldn’t swim. Swam my butt all the way back to the Tower.
My first time I didn't know I had a torch, so I when you have to run back to the tower it was near pitch black for me, but somehow I managed to make it And then I never went into the night until I finished the game when I had all the good stuff

Nobody from dl1 makes return And here i was hoping for tolga and fatin since they're the only ones to our knowledge that made it out alive from quarantine
About Volatiles, it's also known at this point that the virus in DL2 is THV, a totally different variant of the Harran Virus. So it's not just a lot of time to evolve, but it's also well, a new strain altogether which likely allowed this to happen. What's really cool in DL2 as well is you can actually somewhat see this progression of Virla to Volatile in higher levels. Virals start looking less human and more grey in appearnce like the Volatile.
@@Jayd888 Tachytranmissive Harran Virus is THV, which is a completely different strain and why it's Abbreviates unlike "Harran Virus". Make sure you're correct if you're going to correct someone.
At the beginning of the game, it explains how they cured the Haran virus but the GRE continued experimenting and created a new strain which they were not able to control this time. Any "The following" ending could be cannon I think. Either the nuke ending or the "Kill the mother" ending since they ended up with a cure and the GRE created the new strain in both endings (Edit oh durr this was made before the game came out. Sorry it won't tell me when videos come out anymore)

@@ColossalKiwi There were images floating around on the official dying light discord a few months ago that showed character models in dl2 (matt, frank, aiden, the old lawan model and a volatile). I think the source of it was a onedrive file that the community had access to for a short time. On the image of a volatile, it showed the head, torso, legs and feet of it. Edit: (The torso part showed the back as well)
Nice touch about I Am Legend and zombie sentience. In the book, the big reveal is that the survivor IS the vampire. The last remnant of an ancient species (humanity), who hunts the “vampires” while they are sleeping. They tell their children stories about him to scare them. Hence the title I Am Legend.
The thing that's so scary about volatiles compared to things such as the fallout deathclaw, is that there's more than one and they can climb stuff. In fallout you can hide on top of stuff and shoot them to death, but in dying light they can climb to basically anywhere on the map besides some certain spots. A single volatile isn't really that scary since you can stun lock them with the UV light, then hit them, and repeat. But they're so terrifying because there's never just one.
@@ColossalKiwi And thank you for including it into your awesome video. Hope to see more videos from ya, cuz i used to watch you a lot back in the days when people still thought Dead Island 2 was going to be released. Glad to see you're back, mate. ^
God the one asking for mercy really got me. You could just hear the pain and anguish in its voice. Even transforming into a monster it still feels the pain
I haven’t ever called the stronger ones Alpha Volatiles, me and my friends call them Nightmares. (Short for Nightmare Volatile, sort of like the Nightmare Goon that’s got thicker skin and no jumpsuit on)
@@eggos2713 nightmares and alphas seem to be the most popular ones, I like blues though since it reminds me of the Velociraptor from Jurassic World, being the leader and all
Fun fact about the Volatile in the hole: He’s turning in a spot directly under the hole in the ceiling so he’s groaning in pain from sunlight exposure. It may be keeping the transformation at a slower speed.. or it just takes time. Too bad Dying Light 2 was disappointing compared to the first game. It’s also a completely different strain of the virus so it’s a whole new super zombie. Tho sadly not a major plot point-
That part where you had to enter a volatile nest in the following… As someone who had played 90% of the game in co-op and was consequently never scared I shat myself doing that a year later without friends
I highly doubt that people will believe me but in the first game I got so fed up of the volitles and wanted to challenge my self so I put my weapons away, started punching the ever living daylights out of a volitile and almost won. They’re actually easy to not die from if you can strategise mid fight.
Kinda strange that canonically volatiles become special infected. Imagine you finally became the ultimate apex predator on the planet, just to devolve into a variety of significantly weaker and less threatening zombie type.
You can actually find a few alpha's in old town on street level during the night but in my experience they are like semi rare. As in you only see one in 7.
9:35 I think they were mentioning Death from above insta-kill move from DL1, when you land on a zombie with some kind of sword while using that skill you impale their chest with it
I love how late game, you can just 2 shot the volatiles, another thing I was really disappointed about was the expcalibur, it was really good, and still destroyed zombies AFTER being broken, and yet, the broken version was better than what the remade version from the blueprint was
I will say that they definitely increased the difficulty of fighting those mf’s in the second installment. In the first one, the main thing was just to swing first and watch for that damn pounce attack they had. In DL2, they have way more attacks, they take way more damage. It’s funny because when I first started playing the 2nd, I was wondering why I never saw them, like ever. There’s a volatile in maybe 1-2 missions. It never occurred to me in my first 8-10 hours of gameplay that the chase level is what triggered them to come out. It wasn’t until I finally fought one that I understood why they’re more on the “rare” side, unless you’re looking for them that is.
When I first played the following I absolutely HATED both endings but I think the volatile crane ending kinda grew on me. It'd be cool if we somehow see crane in dying light 2 ruling over other sentient volatiles
@@Officerballs1 well, it's been 15, I'm sure a lot of DL1 character would still be around, except they're vapor. Volatiles were single-handedly the main reasons people tried to avoid playing at night in Dying Light 1. If you played The Following with the vehicles, and had one chase you, you got to see how fast those mfers really were lol, they could run down your vehicle and attack you.
I had no idea that Dying Light 2 was set 15 years after I'm gonna miss Crane but so excited to play this game and so jealous you get to play it before it comes out
7:50 and when you get demolisher, it says that "during your change from a viral into a volatile, the mutation changed it's course" which implies that special infected occur naturally.
I actually glitched out and was stuck in that Volitile dance party room. Shit was terrifying at first, then hilarious when I realized they where non-hostile! xD
i remember how terrified i was when i first saw the volatiles, i was horrified yet so excited and immersed, dying light might be imo the best/biggest sleeper hit in gaming history - a game no one knew was coming let alone expected to fall in love with - 8 years later and no other game has come close to accomplishing what this game has done, in terms of parkour/exploration and sandbox zombie survival, not even the sequel unfortunately which is devastating because DL1 is my favourite zombie game of all time
The Virals and Volatiles screaming in the background terrifies me still to this day 😭 but still that oldest Dying Light 1 video brings back memories like in 2015.
0:51 oh so you think THATS BAD??? I waited 7 HOURS morning to evening chilling in a random safe house because I thought just like you that the time would progress in the game and daylight would appear, WRONG
Way tougher in dying light 2 I used to be able to wipe with those things in my high level characters in dying light 1 especially my tanky two -handed build spoilers for the dying light 2 ending Even when Aiden turns into his super zombie mode (yeah Aiden has this ability to turn into a sentient volatile? Thing when he's in certain cutscenes and scripted fights something to due with the drug he was injected with as a kid and the inhibitors he's been taking) but anyways you still can't kill them while you can but it's hard when you have to travel to that dark area near the end of the game in the missile silo same place where you massacre the renegades there's a button of volatiles around and you think you'd be able to just hack and slash away through but no you get destroyed especially as you can't heal when you're in your transformation
Good joke, but for me Crane had an actual personality, it just a personalaty of arrogant undeciceve doofus that tends to play dumb in vrushial moments. Bad game protagonist (as a player wessel) but somewhat unique and interesting spin on Main Hero archetype. Unlike any other character of Dying Light 1, those guys are indeed suck and full of stamps
Its been 21 years since the first game. Just 15 years since the harran virus went global. And yes this version of the harran virus is different as it has been modified and experimented on by scientists
There was that in game event where volatile were everywhere but you had guns, well I just started the game , I thought those were the reg zombies, I thought the game was hard-core, I didn't use the guns cause I thought worse would come lol
The very first time I played Dying Light.. Very first night.. I found more than a few spots the Volatile could not get to.. Making it a joke... Sadly.. And by the time I got to the areas that did not have these issues I was on shotting them.. So that was kind of a problem for me. It was still a cool enemy just ruined due to bugs/exploits and then later on.. How frail they are later in the game when those issues are not there.. Even then though I found they where not hard to evade at night even without the exploits in another run.. So.. To me the scare factor should go away quickly even if its your first time playing, and you figure out its harder for them to surround you and get you compared to them actually posing a real threat.. Something that should be quick to figure out.
On new game plus they are very hard to kill let alone the nightmare difficulty. Hell, even virals are really hard to kill on new game+ and they spawn constantly knowing where you are bothering you.
Edit: DL2 takes place 20 years after DL1, but 15 years after the apocalypse.
Edit edit: Ok maybe it's technically 22 years. It's been a long-ass time ok.

They remind me of the villains in "I Am Legend" with Will Smith after his dog runs into the apartment building.
They were vampires in the book.

Fun fact, sabit, after begging for mercy to crane, we can hear him clearly say « we shall rise ». I really hope that in dying light 2, volatiles evolved to become more intelligent and maybe from groups with a leader, etc.
Or like have a Hive mind.
I kind of hear more like a "Please help me" than a "We shall rise"
Too bad Volatile in DL2 is almost rare encountered in game.
@@Count_Gustav they only come out at night when you hit level 4 chase
Volatiles are scary. This video is fantastic. You're my go-to for anything Techland now. Solid work.
Much appreciated!
CKiwi skin for DL2?
I actually enjoyed going out at night in the countryside expansion because of the buggy. It was both terrifying and exciting having several volatiles chasing after you while you got the pedal to the medal🤣
Just started DLC. Literally same feelings about it :D

A really interesting and insightful video CK. It's good to see you back producing content again. Shame about the overwriting in parts but nevertheless really enjoyed it..
Thank you for the long-lasting support as always, Tony!
I completed dying light and never faced one of these, honestly was too scared I only faced them when it was part of a mission
I straight up did a massacre of volatiles with a gun and bow which only attracted more until the sun rose.
But now you can no longer do that in dl2, decent level volatiles are impossible to beat if theyre in numbers AND you're in a crowded building.
Yeah, the whole thing is that these zombies aren’t dead people but just VERY sick people.
I think virals are actually still alive just sick and normal zombies are actually dead
@@johncruisethebaldguy1710 i disagree since you can kill infected conventionally. You can snap their necks and kill them, you don't have to destroy the brain
@@johnychrist5475 true but I don't you have to destroy the brain
They're recently turned, that's why they're so agile and have this feeling of pain
But I agree that they probably shouldn't be opponents you are supposed to take on
Mhhm I diss agree
I highly disagree
idk about the first game since i never played it but they just didnt give us guns in dl2.. i mean theres the boomstick but still :(
@@rockhoggaming it’s honestly better this way.
Lmao things scary
Okay thats hilarious just
"Crane why are you so wet"

About Volatiles, it's also known at this point that the virus in DL2 is THV, a totally different variant of the Harran Virus. So it's not just a lot of time to evolve, but it's also well, a new strain altogether which likely allowed this to happen. What's really cool in DL2 as well is you can actually somewhat see this progression of Virla to Volatile in higher levels. Virals start looking less human and more grey in appearnce like the Volatile.
the game is horrible kiddo, go take your medicine and stay in school
THV literally means "The Harran Virus"

I've been playing Dying Light for 5 years now and this is the best zombie game for me at least.
Been playing since 2019 definitely my favorite zombie game of all time
At the beginning of the game, it explains how they cured the Haran virus but the GRE continued experimenting and created a new strain which they were not able to control this time. Any "The following" ending could be cannon I think. Either the nuke ending or the "Kill the mother" ending since they ended up with a cure and the GRE created the new strain in both endings
(Edit oh durr this was made before the game came out.

9:20 It's not just the torso, it's the entire skin. Look at the shoulders. They're way armored looking than flesh looking Volatiles.
Nothing terrified me in the first game like the screams of a volatile.
And those glowing pinpoint eyes, still instant fear.
you mean shrieks, those werent screams man, they were inhuman fucking shrieks that fucking jumpscared you
The thing that's so scary about volatiles compared to things such as the fallout deathclaw, is that there's more than one and they can climb stuff.
0:19 "volatile. More like fall-atile."

I haven’t ever called the stronger ones Alpha Volatiles, me and my friends call them Nightmares.

Too bad Dying Light 2 was disappointing compared to the first game.
It’s also a completely different strain of the virus so it’s a whole new super zombie. Tho sadly not a major plot point-
Thank you for the awesome Dying Light content. Always happy with your work keep it up
That part where you had to enter a volatile nest in the following… As someone who had played 90% of the game in co-op and was consequently never scared I shat myself doing that a year later without friends
7:15 The issue is the THV in dying light 2 is an entirely different strain
I highly doubt that people will believe me but in the first game I got so fed up of the volitles and wanted to challenge my self so I put my weapons away, started punching the ever living daylights out of a volitile and almost won. They’re actually easy to not die from if you can strategise mid fight.
That volatile is huge that's creepy but awesome their evolving
Kinda strange that canonically volatiles become special infected.
Imagine you finally became the ultimate apex predator on the planet, just to devolve into a variety of significantly weaker and less threatening zombie type.
3:26 were you using any graphics mod here? Looks amazing. Please reply if you can.
I was waiting for these videos.
You can actually find a few alpha's in old town on street level during the night but in my experience they are like semi rare. As in you only see one in 7.
9:35 I think they were mentioning Death from above insta-kill move from DL1, when you land on a zombie with some kind of sword while using that skill you impale their chest with it
The alpha volitile also appears in the main game, i saw one in "old town" in front of dr. Camdens clinic
Yea their pretty common there along with outside one of the safehouses you unlock shortly after reaching old Town where you look for Jade.
Mission objective - Escape the sewer.
If you know what I'm talking about, you also shit your pants like i did 😂
I love how late game, you can just 2 shot the volatiles, another thing I was really disappointed about was the expcalibur, it was really good, and still destroyed zombies AFTER being broken, and yet, the broken version was better than what the remade version from the blueprint was
This might be a coincidence, but, there's a song in the dl2 tracklist called "a cursed medicine", which might refer to The Mothers "cure"
A year later and this game is bussing even better
When I first played the following I absolutely HATED both endings but I think the volatile crane ending kinda grew on me. It'd be cool if we somehow see crane in dying light 2 ruling over other sentient volatiles
Except we won't as it's confirmed to not be cannon
Edit: I was wrong, I was told 4 years ago it was canon, but it wasn't true.
@@Officerballs1 well, it's been 15, I'm sure a lot of DL1 character would still be around, except they're vapor. Vapor created when you mix a human with an armed nuclear warhead

Shit was terrifying at first, then hilarious when I realized they where non-hostile! xD
Their current explanation of how the infection works sounds more interesting.
i remember how terrified i was when i first saw the volatiles, i was horrified yet so excited and immersed, dying light might be imo the best/biggest sleeper hit in gaming history - a game no one knew was coming let alone expected to fall in love with - 8 years later and no other game has come close to accomplishing what this game has done, in terms of parkour/exploration and sandbox zombie survival, not even the sequel unfortunately which is devastating because DL1 is my favourite zombie game of all time

Even when Aiden turns into his super zombie mode (yeah Aiden has this ability to turn into a sentient volatile? Thing when he's in certain cutscenes and scripted fights something to due with the drug he was injected with as a kid and the inhibitors he's been taking) but anyways you still can't kill them while you can but it's hard when you have to travel to that dark area near the end of the game in the missile silo same place where you massacre the renegades there's a button of volatiles around and you think you'd be able to just hack and slash away through but no you get destroyed especially as you can't heal when you're in your transformation
I hope they bring Crane back as one of the big monsters you face. At least then he'll have more personality than he did in the first game
Good joke, but for me Crane had an actual personality, it just a personalaty of arrogant undeciceve doofus that tends to play dumb in vrushial moments. @@ColossalKiwi np man. But honestly i just hope we can still throw buckets at people
The old volatiles made the world feel like a place you shouldn’t be, you were made to fear it. Now, there just a mini boss, instead of death itself.
There was that in game event where volatile were everywhere but you had guns, well I just started the game , I thought those were the reg zombies, I thought the game was hard-core, I didn't use the guns cause I thought worse would come lol
The other enemy types you compared them to were super accurate to their aggressive behavior very 👍
The very first time I played Dying Light..
“Every new player fears the night”
