Dude, this saved me so much time. It never occurred to me to try our shredder. We have an old 10 page Fellowes crosscut shredder that worked great, as long as I fed it 3-4" max strips. I reduced several boxes down to nice confetti for my nightcrawlers. Thanks!
I have been using the same Royal 1620mx crosscut shredder for over 6 years to process almost every piece of corrugated cardboard that our household of 4 has seen during that time. The shreds aren't micro, but my worms have never complained about it.
Remember no glossy paper or photos. No glossy cardboard or cereal boxes and no labels or tape. I have a Royal Micro Cut 10sheet and it just loves Amazon boxes. (I do too!) My shredded stuff goes to the worm bin and the hot compost bins too.
I agree that the micro cutter is the way to go. Bought one and the worms eat it twice as fast along with food scraps. My casting are beautiful black castings.
@@sbaxter4207 in most countries the use of chlorine gas for paper bleaching is prohibited. Instead, other chlorine compounds and other chemicals are used. They should not cause problems with toxic dioxins, which are otherwise a big problem with chlorine gas bleached paper. But of course, paper products often contain some small levels of environmental toxins. In particular, recycled fibers. The use of cardboard/paper in compost, cultivation and worm contexts seems to be so widespread and proven that I personally don't think it's anything to worry about.
I love how glock makes its own bb guns and how they make them look so real ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxnX9wE_Q8zvF75Y5iWzTU3Q4FlrtyGApQ , the only thing is that the slide doesn't move back. The sights and the body structure is so similar to a real handgun, fits in my hand perfectly but I actually ordered it with the 40 pack of Co2 tanks and they never arrived even though it said that they handed It to me. Was not able to test the accuracy since I didn't get everything I purchased which is frustrating and that's the whole reason why I got the bundle so it arrives together. So the Co2 tank happens to be a third party so it makes no sense to put it in the bundle if it doesn't get shipped at the same time, the BB gun arrived first then the Co2 tanks were supposed to arrive someday later but didn't, which doesn't make sense. I recommend just ordering the gun itself so you don't get the same issue I ran into plus there's no option for a refund. How stupid.
That cuts hours of cutting. I spent 2 days cutting it. A few hour 1 day and a few hours the second day. I love doing my own compost because I know what's in it. Great video. Loved and Subbed.
nery colon 1 glad you like it I was hand cutting paper for compost for a little while then realized the hand cramps aren't worth it and got this beast.
Great video. My only issue with shredders is the pause time when they heat up. I'd be on a roll then the shredder would pause while the motor cooled down. Drove me mad lol. Great for very short periods of shredding but when I had several large cardboard boxes to shred the pause time was longer than the operating time lol. Now I just rip them by hand. Great video though and thanks for sharing as it's a great method for sure.
@Old chunk of coal. Sounds like your "interpreter" in your own brain needs to calm down. No one got excited in that comment. Stop watching the news and you might be able to read comments calmly.
I wouldn't put too much paper/cardboard in the compost/worm bins because, as with anything, you get out what you put in. I saw a video where someone did an experiment feeding 2 bins (compost or worms), 1 with paper, 1 without. The produce from the paper fed bin looked great, till compared with the other, then it just looked like dirt compared to the rich dark compost from the non paper bin. Made a lot of sense, so I decided to use my scrap paper for briquettes instead.
I don't put too much paper in I mainly just shred my sensitive documents and feed them to the worms (like to see an identity theif piece them together after that) But I also feed them yard clippings food scraps and leaves
It would be nice to know how long one lasts using primarily for cardboard box shredding. All the available user manuals I found specifically list cardboard as something to not feed in. If there's a benefit that trumps voiding the warranty I guess there's no issue there.
This shredder looks awesome. I'm going to get one for shredding shipping boxes and cereal boxes for my compost. My other big source of paper waste, though, is Dixie paper plates and bowls. The Dixie website says they are compostable in 'commercial' facilities, presumably because high temp is needed to break down the non-shredded plates. But if I micro shred them first, I think my pile could probably handle it. If I wipe the food off first, do you think this shredder would work for wax coated paper plates?
Oh yes this thing is a tank it will go through double thick cardboard so long as you keep the blades oiled. To oil them just spread some vegetable oil on a page of regular paper and shred then alternate the oiled side. And do it a few times and boom it's just like new!
can you tell me about ink and paper or tape on cardboard or labels? I know receipts would be bad because they are wax paper and have multiple layers of plastic.... but what about different inks / dyes / tapes / etc?
This is just what I need but am concerned about buying one because I contacted the manufacturers and they said that cardboard would ruin the blades - I don't want to shred huge amounts of cardboard, just a few bags now and then for composing, - any thoughts please ?
+Frugality from Weans Frugal World I run hundreds of boxes through mine if you oil the blades with just vegetable oil cause that's all machine oil is you should be able to run cardboard for years
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I have seen one on Ebay - I will buy from there as I am in the UK. Looking forward to it very much, initially it's for composting the raised vegetable beds, but I think I will try my hand at worm farming too !! Thank you again.
I bought one and am using it with great success with cardboard boxes ! it's just what I wanted - the tiny pieces will be perfect for compost for my raised beds. Thank you for this video and your advice !! You should get commission from the manufacturers !!
+Frugality from Weans Frugal World you are most welcome I am glad you like what it puts out. I know but you know sometimes it's better to just share the information even without a commission.
I'm looking for something that will shred fine enough so that I can use it as kitty litter, and it will go through the kitty litter scoop without getting caught.
Most of the dye that they use now are soy based so they wont hurt the soil. However I always avoid the high gloss and the stuff that has metallic printing on it. These can contain stuff that in large quantities could harm your soil.
Logan Wheeler this is true of any blade the thicker and tougher the material the more dull the blade becomes. How long did it last are you still using
This little guy can eat awesome
Do you mind posting the actual model number of your micro shredder? Can you put 2 pieces of cardboard at the same time?
Vikas: I doubt 2 pieces of cardboard would work...he had a little trouble feeding just one piece to the slot.
Thanks for sharing your video... AND... I just learned a new word: vermicompost!
Appreciate this ❤
How much does it cost, I've been needing to buy one.
Love the song! lol
Thanks for sharing! You may want to consider that ink is usually GMO soy. We don't use junk mail for organic gardening because of that.

Try this experiment: put some of those Dixie products into a compost pile and also half into your garden. Then see what time, weather and worms do.
can you do an aluminum pop can on this?
can you tell me about ink and paper or tape on cardboard or labels?
I know receipts would be bad because they are wax paper and have multiple layers of plastic.... but what about different inks / dyes / tapes / etc?
I even put paper towel after they dry as well as toilet paper in mine with the help of a piece of cardboard.
yup everything works.
What cardboard shredder do you use?
So you just oil some paper with vegetable oil? How often do you do this? How about a video?
Hi from montréal canada.
Good explication. Thankyou.
Do you think we can schredd plastic strap?
Polypropylene strap?
You can chred CDs and credit cards so I don't see why not. Try it.
What a great suggestion!
Thank you
i would like to know. when damp dose it clump together or compact.?
Hazel Blair actually I just wet some up today and no it does not clump or become compact at all.
Please send the model of the shredder to find here in Lima Peru

Do you remove the plastic windows from the junk mail envelopes?
Donald Fugitt yes those windows don't decompose since they are plastic. I always take that part out and then shred.
Still workin?
What about the dyes in coloured papers and junk mail. Is this safe for compost heaps, please?
Most of the dye that they use now are soy based so they wont hurt the soil. However I always avoid the high gloss and the stuff that has metallic printing on it. These can contain stuff that in large quantities could harm your soil.
No, shiny coloured papers are generally discouraged, at least in worm bins...
This is true I generally avoid putting colored paper in a worm bin. But in a compost heap color doesn't matter because the bacterial don't care.
don't go crazy on the paper there bud! think fall leaves !
I don't I only add a few handfuls each week in order to prevent my grass clippings from clumping together.
+Back 2 Organics that is good!
Quick tip: You never want to put cardboard in your shredder. It doesn't matter what type of blade it is the shredder will dull faster and easier.

You forgot that the shreds can be used to make wood stove/fireplace pellets or briquettes.
+Ron Yerke this is true you could use the paper shreddings to make fire logs. Thanks for the reminder.

glues, whitening bleaches and toxic ink near the roots of your plants.
