    When my granddaughter was in fourth grade she and I raised worms in our garage for her science fair project. She had so much fun doing it and was very diligent making sure her worms were cared for every day! I could not believe how fast they went through the scraps!! That was 15 years ago and she is now grown and lives on her own.. She still talks about this project all the time! By the way, she took the grand prize in her science fair for her worm project!

    • @smartermindmatters
      @smartermindmatters 5 місяців тому

      In this video, the top bin wasn't in use. It should be swappable with the middle bin. When the ANC is working in the middle bin, you have to stack the top bin with kitchen wastes. As time goes by the kitchen wastes on the top bin would decompost. Meanwhile, after eating and converting the wastes in the middle bin, the ANC will look for food to eat and they will move to the top bin. This time, you can easily harvest the vermicasts in the middle bin and, thereafter put the bin to the top ready for stacking again for a new batch of kitchen wastes. The process is repeated in this way.

    Well managed (not overwatered) worm bins will NOT have that much tea. It is ideal for there to be very little to no tea, as all that moisture is bad for worms, and your vermicompost was very wet. It should be like potting soil, somewhat structural but loose.

      It's not compost tea. It's decomposed food juice that leaks out the bottom (leachate). DO NOT PUT IT ON PLANTS THAT YOU EAT.

    Nice... The liquid is called leachate, which I think is acidic... Compost tea is different I think... for how long can it be stored ? Is the top compartment supposed to be empty??

    • @luffyluck
      @luffyluck 2 роки тому +3

      @@advocaterishitamall I would avoid using leachate at all if you can make proper compost tea. Leachate contains bacteria that are not safe for consumption (that have not been through the worm digestion) and goes off fairly fast (foul smell). From my understanding leachate can be used very diluted on trees and some plants, but never on leaf crops that you directly eat. I'm not sure as his setup is different from most worm bins I've seen but a worm bin shouldn't do too much leachate in general as the worm bedding should be moist but not "too wet" so it drips.

    One question though: do you ever put anything in the upper bin right under the lid?

    • @urbangardeningofficial
      @urbangardeningofficial  2 роки тому +9

      Once first bin is full ..you can fill second bin with scraps n bedding ...worms will migrate from bottom to up or up to bottom through the drainage holes 👍

    Hi… I watch your videos regularly. Thanks for the videos. I have a doubt in this… you used old newspapers which contain dye harmful chemicals. Won’t that effect plants? Can we use any alternative? Thank you once again for your videos.

    • @urbangardeningofficial
      @urbangardeningofficial  2 роки тому +4

      It will not cause any harm ....you can use cardboard or dry leaves

      There's no harmful dyes in newsprint. You generally want to avoid color images but the big culprit is the glossy finish/magazine style prints.

    Hi there! I have an important question. At the start of the season we bought bulk compost and stored it in lidded trash cans. Then forgot about it. Well now we want to use it in a new rose garden bed and it smells vile because there was no air holes 🙈 is this now not safe to use? Will it damage my new roses?
