    When my granddaughter was in fourth grade she and I raised worms in our garage for her science fair project. She had so much fun doing it and was very diligent making sure her worms were cared for every day! I could not believe how fast they went through the scraps!! That was 15 years ago and she is now grown and lives on her own.. She still talks about this project all the time! By the way, she took the grand prize in her science fair for her worm project!

    • @smartermindmatters
      @smartermindmatters 3 місяці тому

      In this video, the top bin wasn't in use. It should be swappable with the middle bin. When the ANC is working in the middle bin, you have to stack the top bin with kitchen wastes. As time goes by the kitchen wastes on the top bin would decompost. Meanwhile, after eating and converting the wastes in the middle bin, the ANC will look for food to eat and they will move to the top bin. This time, you can easily harvest the vermicasts in the middle bin and, thereafter put the bin to the top ready for stacking again for a new batch of kitchen wastes. The process is repeated in this way.

  • @K-Zone

    Well managed (not overwatered) worm bins will NOT have that much tea. It is ideal for there to be very little to no tea, as all that moisture is bad for worms, and your vermicompost was very wet. It should be like potting soil, somewhat structural but loose.
    But, great video, well made

      It's not compost tea. It's decomposed food juice that leaks out the bottom (leachate). DO NOT PUT IT ON PLANTS THAT YOU EAT.

      @luffyluck 2 роки тому +3

      @@advocaterishitamall I would avoid using leachate at all if you can make proper compost tea. Leachate contains bacteria that are not safe for consumption (that have not been through the worm digestion) and goes off fairly fast (foul smell). From my understanding leachate can be used very diluted on trees and some plants, but never on leaf crops that you directly eat. I'm not sure as his setup is different from most worm bins I've seen but a worm bin shouldn't do too much leachate in general as the worm bedding should be moist but not "too wet" so it drips.

      why Potassium is important in plants:
      - Potassium regulates the opening and closing of stomata thus regulating the uptake of CO2 thus enhancing photosynthesis.
      - It triggers activation of important biochemical enzymes for the generation of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides energy for other chemical and physiological processes such as excretion of waste materials in plants.
      - It plays a role in osmoregulation of water and other salts in plant tissues and cells.
      - Potassium also facilitates protein and starch synthesis in plants.
      - It activates enzymes responsible for specific functions.

    This is complicated. I have made compost with just a little potting soil, fruits and vegetables. Depending on the quantity; can take from 12-30 days with a sprinkling of water every 3 days

      I wouldn’t say it’s complicated, a few extra steps sure. But your missing the fact that he’s also getting all that free worm castings mixed with the compost. That’s just free nitrogen, and from an excellent source.

      Yea this set up is far beyond your simple compost bin for sure but it also has multiple features your not getting from a normal compost bin! This thing is pretty fancy and you definitely get the added features of being able to harvest different types of compost from this one set up.

    Do you add extra water in the bins during the feeding time? Because I never get that much worm leachate (the nutrient water).

      No ...may be from the cocopeat (I used 6-7 litres of water for the cocopeat brick in the starting)

    Hi there! I have an important question. At the start of the season we bought bulk compost and stored it in lidded trash cans. Then forgot about it. Well now we want to use it in a new rose garden bed and it smells vile because there was no air holes 🙈 is this now not safe to use? Will it damage my new roses?

    just a thought: I would not use newspaper, especially the one with color ink, as it may contain harmful chemicals. instead just use plain cardbord

      Once first bin is full ..you can fill second bin with scraps n bedding ...worms will migrate from bottom to up or up to bottom through the drainage holes 👍

    Hi there, this is an excellent all-in-one vermicompost station. The ones here do not allow harvesting the liquid that percolates to the bottom. Do you ship to USA?
