Richard “Dick” Grayson was once a child acrobat, the youngest of a daring family performance group called the “Flying Graysons.” However, this came to an end when a mob boss named Zucco caused his parents to plummet to their deaths. Orphaned and alone, resident billionaire Bruce Wayne took responsibility for the nine year old, while simultaneously investigating the crime as Batman. However, one night while he was investigating the crime scene, Dick had snuck out to do the same. Running into each other, Batman instantly saw much of himself in the child and revealed his true identity. Seeing much potential in the boy, he trained him to become his sidekick. Join www.Watchmojo.com as we will explore the origins of Dick Grayson, otherwise known as Robin.
all the Robins
1. Dick Grayson
2.Jason Todd
3.Tim Drake
4.Steffenie Brown
5.Damian Wayne
6.Carrie Kelly
Batman went through lots of sidekicks
You forget John from The Dark Knight Rises
Should Bruce not be really old now?
Well, the amount is kinda skewed due to some of them only being in alternate universes. Case in point: Carrie Kelly, who only appeared in the story _Batman: The Dark Knight Returns_ and its sequels.
Tim Drake should be first or second in my opinion
U GOT CORN I think that's the order in which he got the Robins. Carrie Kelly came up in the _The Dark Knight Returns_ story.
Robin is the greatest sidekick ever in comic book history in my opinion.
Okay....but which one?
All of them.
techincally if you think about it their is only one robin. robin is a codename or identity like dick grayson was the first then he went to became nightwing then jason became robin no one knows that there are multiple robins there just is one
of all the robins in history, Dick Grayson, and Tim Drake were the best robins in my opinion!
My favorites are Jason Todd and Tim Drake
My favorite hero is nightwing so u can get my favorite robin also my 2nd fave robin is Tim drake
yees, for me too:)
My favourite is Tim drake
Mediaeval. Boy, and. His Bat man.
Batman & Robin = Father & Son
codster9 you are an idiot there are more than one robins and only one is batmans son
@@matthewwhiting9283 no, they were all adopted at one point
Swoosh I was 12 when I wrote that comment
Why is Damian Wayne in the thumbnail if this is about Dick Grayson?
Jared Thompson same with the flash one its Barry in the thumbnail but it's about jay Garrick
Jared Thompson They also used Shazam (wizard) as a thumbnail for Superhero Origins: Shazam's Captain Marvel.
I may hate Batman fanboys, but being raised on Batman the most appealing part of the character was always Robin to me. Robin represented the viewpoint of that Batman is not alone in the world seeking justice and somebody he could rely on to take the mantle when he falls but in many cases grow into being their own man. Plus I always found the Tim Drake incarnations of Robin to have the cooler costumes than Batman.
Wes Collins same
I wish watchmojo would make origins about specific characters because some superhero identities are shared by multiple people, like robin. This should've been "superhero origins: Dick Grayson" or at least "superhero origins: Nightwing".
The 1st robin was Dick Grayson who later on became the leader of Teen Titans and then Nightwing(hero), 2nd robin was killed by Joker then was brought back to life by the lazardes pit and then became red hood(villan), 3rd robin was Tim Drake who then later became Red Robin( hero), then the 4th one is Damian Wayne Bruce Wayne's blood son with Talia al Ghaul
i really feel as though they should've or should do a video about the other Robins, they're just as important to batman and definitely weren't replacements just to get popularity back up. They are all key to batman's character development as each time make batman question his lifestyle and choice to involve children in his crime fighting, he's often riddled with guilt but often sees a different and better side of life. They also all have an equally gripping and tragic story (i've especially enjoyed the story arc involving Damian in the latest batman comics, omg cried so much) and when they all grow up and come back together to form the bat family with bat girl and batman its fucking awesome, especially how ,despite the disagreements and arguments, they will always support batman, which is Robins true job really: to keep batman sane, human and grounded.
I don't understand how anyone could think batman and robin were gay I mean HELLO people does it not come 2 mind that robin dated batgirl then married star fire and and had a child???? And also batman has a thing with cat women that no one understands! If ur going 2 call someone gay at least get ur facts right about the character other then running around screaming what u think!
Kannard Johnson *FACEPALM!!!* take ur lies and get ur ass out of here!!!! Robin and batman r not gay and the fact that 2 guys (Who look at each other as father and son which is mentioned many times BTW!!!) can't live with each other without being called gay is #RACIST!!! Moral of the story is robin and batman r not gay batman basically adopted robin + if there was something sexually going on between the 2 of them I think that the people would have noticed and would have taken robin away becuz having sex with a minor is illegal!!!! Soooo no batman and robin ARE NOT and I repeat NOT GAY!!!!
Kannard Johnson Well crazy when u wake up from lala land come back here and then we'll talk!!!
Kannard Johnson -_-
Kannard Johnson -_-
KayleeEarthGreatness MayOfFlowerFairies Sry, but that isn't racist, that's the wrong word.I think you're meaning discriminating. (Sry, I'm a smart-arse, I know) and btw. there are many stepfathers or even real fathers who are paedophiles and act their sexual tendency out, actually with their own kids. And I really don't believe that Bruce and Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian had sexual relationsships, but... Yeah, your comment is a little... aggressiv, so I had to answer in this clever Dick comment (if you're allowing this pun)
Robin is played by Burt Ward and Chris O'donnell!!
I'm glad Grayson became Nightwing. It looks like his own version of being like Batman but with a bad ass name to it and making his hair long.
Nightwing became a more perfected vigilante than Batman. And I love it so much :D
D Grayson: The Best Robin
Tim Drake: A very close second
Origins videos for each robin please
Torbdan yessssss
Yay My favourite I've seen everything wth nightwing on it
Thanks for uploading this.
Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne are not a homosexual couple. Robin has dated both Starfire and Batgirl
Joseph Levitt Gordon just has the perfect Robin face and hair and everything!
Please do Beast boy!!
Robin is and always will be my #1 fav superhero, even if he is a sidekick. And I'm really excited because I heard they are making a Nightwing movie and I want there to be a Nightwing and Robin trilogy.
Do one for Jason Todd (Red Hood)!
You forgot to mention Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Det. Robin John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises. I love the realistic and surprising appearance of Robin in that film. Brilliant.
1:39 to 1:49
That makes sense!
I know it's not Dick Grayson, but I LOVE Arkham City's portrayal of Robin. Would fit right into the films.
back in the 40's, 2 guys sleeping n the same be did not mean the were gay, the comic was aimed towards boys and boys did not think that, they were just mischievous brats who thought of new ways to tease their sister. kids sleeping in the same bed mean nothing to anyone except pluging ya mates nose so he could not breathe.
Means shit all. i hate it now everything someone does can and does end up being questioned.
Homosexuals are still trying to find even more popular characters or people to push the status of being Gay so it will seem as "acceptable" thats why you always hear rising movies stars always get their sexual orientation questioned.
I wish i could get this on your grammar suck by jacksfilmst
The reason that the whole Batman is gay thing came about was some old dude trying to ban comics.
And Joel Schumaker...
Definitely Joel Schumaker
Sousabird Yeah,a guy wrote an entire book about how comics are "inappropriate". It was the reason why the comics were so dull back in the 50's they had to censor everything.
Sousabird yeah i hate that guy who wanted to ruin comics, he was stupid.
Robin/Nightwing Actors Douglas Croft Burt Ward Chris O’Donnell & Brenton Thwaites
Robin The Boy Wonder
Are you guys going to do one for the Red Hood?
I wish you didn't lump in Jason, Tim, and Damian (and Steph, though lucky her she can get featured under her original identity as an origin) into this one as a minor footnote. Tim's always been my favorite.
Can you guys do all the Robins
90s animated Robin was just as cool
Tim drake the best robin
And the actual
I suggest a Top Ten Reasons why DC's The New 52 Is Not Better Than DC's Original 52
There were five Robins: Dick Grayson(Nightwing), Jason Todd(killed by Joker), Tim Drake(Red Robin), Stephanie Brown(took over when Tim left), and Damian Wayne(Robin to Dick's Batman, later Bruce). Dick, Jason, and Tim were Bruce's adopted sons, Stephanie was Tim's girlfriend, and Damian is his biological son. There was another female Robin, Carrie Kelly, in The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Back. But those stories aren't canon, she doesn't really count as an official Robin.
Anti hero origins red hood
@feetler uh no
At the end of the movie, he said his first name was Robin. Robins real name is Dick. Also, Robin, in the comics, wasn't a police officer and was adopted by Bruce at an early age. In the movie, he had just MET Batman.
yeah Cameron boyce would make a new cool Robin.
as like most comic book characters, there are multiple reimagining and origin but i've chosen to focus on the 1988 edition after robin#1 went on to teen titans.Originally like Grayson Jason is the son of circus acrobats killed by a criminal (Killer Croc) and is later adopted by Bruce Wayne. Distinguished by his blonde hair (as opposed to the black hair of Dick. Todd is unfailingly cheerful, wearing his circus costume to fight crime until Dick Grayson presents him with a Robin costume of his own.
Tim Drake=Best Robin
Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damion are all amazing. However the best ROBIN is Damion, because Dick is better as Nightwing, Jason is better as Red Hood, and Tim is better as Red Robin. Red Hood and Nightwing are my 2 favorite DC heroes, Robins my fourth and Damion's my fifth. Flash (Barry Allen) is second
Noo no no no Og and best robin is dick grayson
James Conklin i agree
KingofKings sweet
no Dick Grayson
the new 52 nightwing series was awesome, but i also freaking love the new grayson series that just came out.
Hmmm i was hoping you'd talk about Tim Drake and Jason Todd too but oh well :/
Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian Wayne are all of the Robins in chronological order. Recently the New 52 introduced Carrie Kelly from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns into continuity as Damian's drama tutor who is inquiring as to what happened to him (his death hasn't been publicly declared due to Bruce's stubborn refusal to accept he can't bring him back from the dead). Anyone object to her being Robin #6?
Damn it is hard to remember which Robin is which
I just love Robin cuz of the costume Raymond is gonna dress up as for Halloween!!
Sorry watch mojo but I wouldn't call Jason, Damian, and Tim replacements
This video seems to focus on Dick Grayson's version of Robin and a bit of how he became Nightwing in the first place, it could've been better if they could've featured Jason Todd, Tim Drake Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelley than it would have the whole history of Robin then, now and forever
Huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh.....dick.
You forgot Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelly. Although Steph only lasted a few weeks in the role, and The Dark Knight Returns where Carrie is featured is not technically part of canon anymore, both still count as having taken up the mantle.
I love how he grows up while Bruce has aged like one year.
Young girls too. The identity Robin was also taken by two girls, one of them being Tim Drake's girlfriend and the other one taking on the Robin identity, being a fan of batman. Actually, Carrie Kelly wasn't a bad Robin. She knew first aid, was good with technology, the only Robin to use firecrackers and a sing shot, and was good at karate. I really liked her as Robin. Not as good as Tim Drake or Dick Grayson, but yeah.
Robin is the best sidekick ever, also the most well known,
Red Hood is my favorite version of Robin though.
can you do more on the nightwing, like what actually happened and what did he really do afterwards as nightwing- any archenemies? or perhaps maybe the origin of red robin?
1. Dick Grayson 2.Jason Todd (read "A death in the family") 3. Tim Drake. 4 Stephanie Brown 5. Damian Wayne.
watchmojo you may want to do more research. Tim Drake has been just as popular or if not MORE popular than Dick Grayson. The proof is Tim Drake's Robin had been the longest running solo comic book run ever for Robin, until the new 52 was introduced.
They might get around to it at some point. They also didn't talk about Wally West in the Flash episode, just Jay and Barry. She is really cool, isn't she? I love her glasses and she really does the mantle justice, I think.
Yes and no, he never inherited the 'sidekick role' like the robins in the comics did. He inherited the batcave reiterating that batman is more than just one man, he is a symbol, meaning he can be anyone. Bale agreed to do batman with nolan as long as robin was never brought in. Nolan agreed and that's why we never see bale teaching a kid his trade secrets. The fact john blake's legal first name is robin was meant to be a nod to the character since he never appeared in the nolan batman universe.
He was also created because the writers didn't like how most of all dialogue was Batman's thoughts so they gave him Robin so he'd have someone to talk to the whole way through the comic. And I don't know I think Tim Drake's is pretty famous and Damian Wayne is becoming pretty famous and will be less likely to leave since he is Batman's son
Seeing that body at 0:17, you know good and damn well Batman had him entering the batcave on a nightly basis.
imagine if Marlon wayans deadass played Robin in a batman fr fr
I think
Dick Grayson
Jason Todd
Tim Drake
And Stephanie Brown (for, like, two minutes, I think she died after a while)
were all Robins.
I liked Chris O'Donell he did the best he could with what he was given they wrote Robin really badly in those movies but he had a bit of a charm to him in Batman Forever
love these. great study-break entertainment
I Suggested a "Robin Special" to them, if they don't do it then I will cause they should have one that contains the 3 best Robins (Dick,Jason,Tim) and I guess they could add Damien if they wanted.
He's definitely skilled enough to be able to.handle the other Robin's at that point in time because that's when he started to become his own and fight his own villains.
step 1: type in grayson on the youtube search
step 2: watch the first result entitled grayson
step 3: relive of why playing robin as a little kid was cooler than batman
His moral code and sense of justice, inherited from Bruce
Great sense of humor and his preferences for redheads, most probably Alfred.
Not my favorite sidekick though, but my favorite superhero vigilante of all times.
and now the newest storyline is created: Robin John Blake- police officer/investigator- Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Well look at it this way. There may have never been a Robin named Robin, but then how many other re-imaginings have there been in the dark knight trilogy? Nolan wanted to show us a bit of traditional batman there and the best way of doing that was allowing Robin to find the batcave.
Dick Grayson Had fell loving relationships Baradra Gordon,Zatanna,Raven,Donna Troy,Dawn Granger,Supergirl,Kate Kane and Starfire
Before I say anything, all of the male Robin characters are awesome. My fav is Dick because, he was the first real sidekick in comics, and also the first to grow up in cannon. I will concede that Tim fits the Robin mantle better than Dick has, after he became Nightwing. So Tim Drake was the better Robin, but I like Grayson as a character better. I mean Tim Drake was better received than Jason because it was Dick Grayson who introduced him. Since fans didn't like Jason he was killed in cannon.
I was wondering if you where going to bring up the Dark Knight and You did!
For some reason, Tim has always been my favorite. This is solely based on the fact that I grew up watching batman the animated series. Of course I think that in that show Tim was kind of mixed with Jason in a way because of his fate that was revealed in Batman beyond revenge of the Joker.
Robin nanananananana Robin!!
Richard John "Dick" Grayson- The boy wonder, Robin(#1), Owlman, Red X (#1) ,Nightwing(#3), Red Robin, Renegade, Officer Grayson, The Target, Hush, Batman, The Joker(#2). That alone makes him the best!
no mention of the DCAU Nightwing version? one of the few versions that actually fits his style by giving him WINGS to glide with............
Nolan stated that they didn't do Robin in the Dark Knight trilogy because they wanted to focus on a younger Batman. Dick Grayson does exist in that continuity, he's just a kid and they haven't met
Jason Todd is my favorite of all the Robins! He has the overall best story arc.
Robin 3 I think has become the most iconic as most portals of robin with his hacking skills, birdarangs and bow staff and edgier attitude in the animated universe esp, is inspired by Tim not Dick Tim is also the only one batman has said is his equal as a detective.
Grayson is Nightwing/Batman/original Robin. Tim Drake took the job much more seriously but nothing beats an original.
I'm not much of a Batman fan but Robin is the greatest sidekick bar none.
It's a guy whose first name is Robin. His name is Robin Blake, that goes to show how close Nolan's movies are to the comics
Dick Grayson became the 2nd Batman
Yes, we don't get much about Carrie other than in the TDKR graphic novel series, but I still think she's awesome. Steph... wasn't terrible, just didn't always use her head - I do feel bad for Tim though
Holy origin story! This is awesome.
Even so Dick Grayson:
1.Left Batman(so badass in itself!)
2.Became Leader of the Teen Titans(And he doesn't have any superpowers!)
3.He left his own team to become Nightwing.
I never heard about Tim Drake doing that shit!
They weren't sharing a bed. If you look closely, you can see where one headboard ends and the other begins. I believe a different panel clearly shows that they are in two separate beds.
Please do just Red Hood!
I thought Tim has the best potential for being the best detective, Damian has the best potential fighter (best fighter has to be Cassadra) not because he's a Wayne but because he was trained by the league of shadows since he was able, and Dick is obviously DC universe's best acrobat, but also the best leader in the family having lead the Titans, Misfits, and the JLA (as Batman) and was close to getting Damian's respect.
Batman "Oh no.."
Robin "Oh yes.."
Sulu "Oh my!"
The Red Hood Alignment is classified as Neutral, it means that they may either do things based upon what they desire so their actions might be harmful or good it doesn't matter as long as its to their benefit or it means that they have a weak moral compass and their actions if based off what they perceive to be as good....I hope I am not being argumentative ... I just had 2 cans of energy drink and just finished my workout ,.... feeling a bit....."active" lol
Batman: Oh no...
Robin: ohhhhh yeeessss..
Yup..that sums it up
Dick Grayson As Robin Became The Leader of Teen Titans
Dick Grayson (first Robin) is Nightwing.
Jason Todd (second Robin) is Red Hood.
i think with these origins, you should do the lineage of the hero. That means, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne. i don' t mean go off into alternate story lines though. Except for the flash, where it starts in earth 2 but then the others are in earth 1.
They could - never - show a modern comic with an adult man sleeping in the same bed as a 15 year-old boy. I give Robin kudos for wearing one of the silliest costumes in DC comics, and risking his life over and over again fighting villains that could easily kill him just to annoy Batman (who realistically would justifiably be accused of child endangerment every time he brought Robin with him to face armed thugs and psychopathic killers...)
Still, I always had a soft spot for this character.
i just wish they would have done origins of them as well. carrie kelly is awsome cant beleive i forgot to list her
You´re forgetting about Jason Tod and that blond Robin-girl who weared the costume for like two weeks before dying...
As accurate as these are to the content of the comic books, there are often mistakes when it comes Hollywood. Robin was not left out of the recent films to allow a greater focus on Batman. In fact, the original draft for Dark Knight Rises featured the origin of Robin. He has only been removed because of Christian Bale's aversion to the character.
You know. People say first is not always best but when it comes to Robin, The first will always be the best
No he's not. The Robin that is in Nolan Universe isn't Dick Grayson; Blake is more a a mixture of all the other robins that came around, I would say Jason Todd's character showed most in the movie through his detective skills and his tough attitude.
If you want to be technical, then there are 5 Robins. I mean't 3 as in the 3 most popular as the other 2 have fairly boring and short origins as they are both relatively new. The other two are Stephanie something and Damien Wayne (Bruces genetically modified biological son).
dick grason was the first robin who grew up to lead the tean titans and become night wing
jason todd was second to replace him, and was killed by the joker, and ras al ghul brought him back to life, he then became the red hood, and tim was the third and last robin, after identically killing the joker, he retired and batman went back to being solo for the most part. hope this helps
