Nice tidy car. We have the R56 John Cooper Works and it goes like a rocket. It is the BMW engine with the timing chain that someone else mentioned, they go at around 60,00miles, lets hope your has been done, dead noisey when cold. We had our guys over here in Oz walnut blast the inlet manifold as they build up with gunk, made a massive difference to the get up and go. Looking forward to the rest of the work on it, good luck.
Totally class Rob. Very interesting as always. I hope you do really well out of it. Thank you for your constant cheerfulness and positivity. And thank you for sharing.
At 87k miles it could be carbon buildup on the intake valves causing the misfire. Good news is the high pressure fuel pump seems ok and the timing chain didn't rattle too bad. One other thing relating to the back seat being out, it might be worth changing the fuel filter, they are listed as a lifetime part but I did mine at 75k and it was jet black and full of debris. Looking forward to seeing what you do as I have one and I've done most of the common fixes. Just need to change the valve stem seals on mine...
Done my head gasket, changed pistons and seals and timing chain the lot. Even ported and polished cylinder head and ofcorse changed valve seals. Fun car.
Love your videos....I have just subscribed because I'm fascinated to know why cars break down and want to know how you fix them. Hope you keep making the videos.
Most common issues on these are the timing chain and tensioner. Another thing to look for is oil starvation. The THP engines suffer from burning through roughly a litre of oil every 1000miles, and the dipstick also reads incorrectly (shows more oil than is actually in the engine)
Oooh, and to add another possible cause of the problem; Take the inlet manifold off and have a look at the top of the valves. These usually get covered in oil deposits from the PCV system and require wallnut blasting to remove it. Please take note that processes that clean the engine through the fuel system (such as Terraclean) do not work, as the injectors spray into the cylinder and not on top of the valves. Hope this helps once again, mate!
Great video Rob, as always I’m looking forward to seeing what the problem with it is and seeing it cleaned up and ready to go. I enjoy watching your videos as much as any motoring program on tv, please keep them coming 👍👍👍👍
These R56 Minis are perfect project cars, lots of broken ones around, parts are plentiful and cheap, so much info floating around, what's not to like, Great stuff Lads!
It seems your old jump pack has had it's day . Inside thery have what is usually a golf trolley battery and are very easy to replace . Simply remove and order one with same no's . These newer small packs are brilliant as you've found out
It's a nice little motor, great colour,I worked on a 1.4 litre years ago, turned out timing had slipped,we got it 98% right, but was a little lumpy at idle, but drove great, and it's still going as far as I know, your mini has a great spec, well worth spending time on it,fair play to you.👍 Damo (Rep of Ireland)
ooh Mini R56, the famous Prince engine, same as my Peugeot 207cc ... will definitely need oil refilling every few hundred miles (0.5l/1000km is norm in my car manual) :) the major downside to me, but it runs pretty nice!
I’ve got a third gen Cooper s, it’s the bmw 2.0 litre engine, just had it remapped to 400 nm torque and 260 hp, it always puts a smile on your face. Great little cars.
Watch out for the piston to go Kaboom. Happened to 2 of mates. These engines are notorious for that, despite the tuners saying it's the same as the stronger BMW 2.0 versions ;)
A tip for you from someone who has done a lot of Copart write off's. When using your jump pack, remove one of the batteries terminals because all you are doing is draining your jump pack into a knackered battery. This leaves no power to the car. Regards Steviegtr.
These engines suffer with coking up of the inlet valves. I did a Cooper S exactly the same last year. Took off the inlet manifold and plugs out, turned engine until the valves were shut on each cylinder in turn. Used foaming oven cleaner to break down carbon deposits the with a seal pick and a borescope, scraped all the carbon off and finished off with brake cleaner and nylon bottle brush. Reassembled and it was perfect. Love this channel. Steve
Every video I look at the cars and think, I wouldn't go near that. By the end of the vid I want to buy the car, even before it's fixed. True, born salesman. Just enthusiastic about cars and it shows.
Have an 09 plate r56 had it for 3 years. had same issue rough running misfire odd sound in exhaust. Spent over a grand on timing chain plugs leads coils and diagnosis fees. Issue was still present. Then went to a mini specialist. Saville Park minis instantly diagnosed high pressure fuel pump. Problem solved.
I did a video on my 100k R56 non S. Oil starvation, timing chains and head gaskets can be a big expensive issue. Also has the clutches are a nightmare. I bet you already knew all that. Really interested in this one as I want a R56 Cooper S
I've done a lot of 207 gtis and when they run roughly and misfire its always stretched timing chain and if you keep it like that it will eventually snap and its most likely what happened to yours. It very easy job on them so it should take long
These Peugeot engines suffer with the cam pulleys slipping as they are an interference fit with no key way. There was a recall at Peugeot for this problem. I have come across this problem on the minis as well. The pulley moves roughly half to a tooth out on the timing chain.
Timing chain has plastic holders that breakdown over time and miles, had that happen to ours after 84k miles. Bad design as right close to heat of engine.
Absolutely totally great video I love to see these types of videos somebody who takes great pride in doing things and takes his time to really have a go the modern youth of today should take example of this in so many ways great video Stephen Mitchell
I’m sure it’s bought at the right money, but my money is on bad timing, sounds like death rattle when you started it (google r56 death rattle) timing chain tensioner failure and new chain + tensioner normally sorts them, very little point doing a compression test until you have confirmed the tensioner failed as it will just be out of time, hopefully it’s not damaged anything else, awful engines to work on generally but they drive very well when they drive right!
These Peugeot engines are complete dross, I ended up doing a full engine swap on my daughters Cooper when it dropped a valve and trashed the engine.... weak timing gear and plastic parts everywhere. Most used car dealers avoid them like the plague, they aren't worth the hassle
@@jamesbrett6518 Yes james it would run on 3 cylinders, but run roughly. If the timing chain skipped 1 or even 2 teeth only then there would be a good chance that there would be no damage to the engine at all. But if the chain skips more than 2 teeth then you start to get engine damage i would imagine. I know this because it's happened to my bro's 2003 honda hornet 600 twice in skipping 1 tooth and later on 2 teeth with the tensioners failing and getting away with it twice with no damage at all. His bike has done 140,000 miles as well and still runs strong using hardly any oil. That's honda quality for you. He always uses castrol power 1 fully synthetic oil as well. I would guess the mini has skipped at least 3 teeth if it is indeed the tensioner failure that's caused the damage, that is if the engine is damaged, it might be something different entirely. That's why it's so important to switch off the engine as soon as you can when you hear your engine making a racket or starts to run rough all of a sudden. Sometimes you can get away with it if your quick to switch off when you have engine problems.
