    The “effects” of the special edition literally only look like stickers... with no plaque, you might want to see if that is REALLY a 40th anniversary edition by checking the VIN before repairing - because if it isn’t than you are really wasting money ... even more than usual :)

It was worse than he realized, so he bought the car himself to make good for the friend. He figured out that he got screwed. He took it in to a shop and had to decide if it's worth spending the money to get it fixed. These are things normal people do. They don't go looking for Lamborghinis with drivetrain issues.

      @@AmandaHugenkiss2915 ahh yes, I liken that to the £1200 for all new pads and discs from BMW on my 4 series. I can buy the same parts for £450 and I’ll fit them myself on a weekend. • @terencej72
      @terencej72 4 роки тому +1

      @@a20axf Brakes are relatively easy to do if you follow a methodical setup, in essence it's a few bolts and a few clips with a bit of copper grease and a bit of heat to loosten bolts. You are right, a home mechanic could do all 4 discs and pads in about 6 or 7 hours, I've only ever did it once when i was young and had to save every £ just to keep my car on the road. IIRC it took me about 3 hours to do both front discs and pads. Nowadays despite owning Merc's and Audi's (never BMW's as they are the real money pit of German Luxury Marques) i take my cars to the same independent specialist. He is a Rolls Royce, Bentley and German Marque specialist Labour and servicing is 50% what Merc charge and 70% of what Audi charge for the same jobs.

    • @a20axf
      @a20axf 4 роки тому +1

      @@terencej72 Yes, exactly! I would always favour a reputable independent specialist before taking it to a dealer. I tend to do as much repair work as I can on my own and family’s cars to save money. I know when it’s beyond my capabilities or I just know it’s going to be an absolute pain to do and then I’ll take it to a specialist. However with this BMW I’m keeping a full dealer service history (just the oil changes etc) to keep the value up. Anything else I’ll likely do if myself and invest the difference instead.

    • @terencej72
      @terencej72 4 роки тому +1

      @@a20axf Best idea my friend, as i said BMW's can be real money pits if you don't keep up with maintenance. The fact you are doing it yourself means that you won't scrimp on maintenance as you're not paying extra money. Often when people buy a German Luxury Marque (Porsche, Merc, Audi, BMW) they don't factor in the maintenance. Take my previous car a 2012 Merc C Class 220D AMG Coupe. Bought when nearly 4 years old in Dec 2015 with 30,000 miles for £15,300, sold it last Sept 2020 with 70,000 miles for £7,900. So basically just over half of what i paid 5 years previously. I didn't scrimp on maintenance and it probably cost £3500 in 5 years for servicing, MOT's, and parts that broke. To be fair there were only 2 parts that broke that WEREN'T wear and tear - a headlamp module and driver door window mech.

    Welcome to Mini ownership, i have an 06 JCW. At least yours didn't catch on fire from the power steering leak like mine did...I did all that work (pretty much the same list as yours was wrong with mine with the additional melted parts from the fire) on mine and very nearly pulled the engine to do the clutch. and despite a new oil filter housing and replacing all the little seals it still leaks oil, and now it has a coolant leak to chase down. Owning a mini is a labor of love. This year it was a short in the wiring harness and bad battery cable which I left to the professionals to fix which was also not cheap. Mini's are fun to drive which almost makes all the money spent keeping it alive worth it.

      @@---cr8nw Depends on how they treated it. My dad can make any car fall apart in 20k miles or less. My mother can make any car last upwards of 200k miles. Sometimes it's not about the car. I will agree Mini reliability is crap, but if its an unreliable car, then people who don't take care of it shouldn't buy one. I had a 92 Oldsmobile Bravada, 90k miles were put on it, it was pristine, showroom, my mother drove it for another 30k miles with no problem, my father got a hold of it to work one winter, put less than 5k miles on it and it literally began to fall apart. This same car my mother had driven the same distance the same amount of time with no problems. Same thing happened with a few other cars. Sometimes it's not the car. Even POS cars, we got a used beater once because we really needed a car and mom managed to make that thing drive for years with no problems despite the fact that it had oil leaks galore, barely had brakes, and a bunch of other things wrong with it and had caught on fire twice prior to us owning it. That is so great the Johnny gives to St Judes. My wife and I organize 2 charities every year for Smilow Cancer Hospital at YALE New haven. One is in memory of a friends son who lost the battle at age 16 and we call it Scottys Christmas in July and the other is personal as I am a survivor myself so we do the same thing around Christmas time for the children going thru treatment. I would see the kids everyday I was there and it was the hardest thing to see children suffering. Anyway, I am glad Tyler is in a position to do nice things to pass it on. Very respectable.

      They are not that bad. Tyler over exaggerates the unreliability and poor build quality of too many cars cause that’s the whole premise of his channel. Early 2000s bmws and minis are actually pretty reliable, having owned a manual x5 with over 200k and a 05 mini with over 250k.

      They're horrible, parts are out the ass and they constantly break down, and they rot pretty bad too. A Mini Cooper doesn't even last 8 years from new where I live, as soon as they see salt the electronics go crazy and it turns into swiss cheese

      @@mchuo7834 For sure. This R53 is probably the worst one I've ever seen for the mileage. It clearly wasn't looked after very well at all.
      Something else I'm wondering about, Ninja put down an oil filter housing replacement for over $400. I've never heard of needing to replace the whole housing. The gaskets can fail, and then cause leaks, but a new gasket is $10. I don't understand why he's replacing the whole housing

    • @mchuo7834

      @@MrManBuzz yeah. This poor mini looks like it’s been abused and no taken care of. Also, Ninja uses near oem parts, and that’s why the total came out to 6 grand. For a car that’s not really worth much, I would have saved it with eBay aftermarket parts to cut costs.

    The R50 shape Minis actually had a lot of input and engineering work from Rover, so actually the R50/R53 Minis are the most British new minis

  • @jb678901
    @jb678901 4 роки тому

    I own a couple of Mini's (GEN2; R55 S - N14 and R60 All 4 JCW - N18). Great fun to drive. Surprising roomy cars on the inside. However, you do have to change the oil at twice the OEM recommended frequency and ALWAYS 100% synthetic...5W-30 or 5W-40. You also need to run them with 96+ octane and on the N14, definitely install a catch can. Both the N14 and the N18 are DFI and known to coke up.
    Drain and fill the transmission fluid (if automatic) every 60K miles; also a good idea. (NOT flush, just drain and re-fill with new filter kit)
    Thermostats go at around 50k miles and are complex/expensive to change...so if you are doing significant maintenance, do this while there is room to do so.
    On the N14...be sure to check that the timing chain tensioner is NOT the first rendition, which backed-out/loosened over time. The timing chain will need to be checked and replaced at around 80k miles. If you run the engine under half oil stick too long, you will shorten the timing chain life for sure.
    Lastly, a thumb size cap full of seafoam in the oil-fill about 200 miles before and oil change...to clean out any gunk. Especially on the Turbo's oil return line. Installing a good after-market flexible oil return line to these turbo models is also recommended.
    Great cars...but you have to stay on top of the maintenance. IMO.
    PS: I do wish there were an after-market canned oil filter conversion for these engines...but apparently there is little room to do this kit conversion.
