Yep. And I can't stand the exotics. I like episodes like this one the best. He's a normal guy in it. He went to an auction and bought a cheap car for a friend. It was worse than he realized, so he bought the car himself to make good for the friend. He figured out that he got screwed. He took it in to a shop and had to decide if it's worth spending the money to get it fixed. These are things normal people do. They don't go looking for Lamborghinis with drivetrain issues.

That hooptie absolutely deserved to be mistreated. I have a 2011 Kia Forte with 165,000 miles on it. I've never done anything on it except oil changes, tires, brake pads and rotors. And it doesn't need a thing. There is no reason a car should be falling apart at 100,000 miles.

@@---cr8nw Depends on how they treated it. My dad can make any car fall apart in 20k miles or less. My mother can make any car last upwards of 200k miles. Sometimes it's not about the car. I will agree Mini reliability is crap, but if its an unreliable car, then people who don't take care of it shouldn't buy one. I had a 92 Oldsmobile Bravada, 90k miles were put on it, it was pristine, showroom, my mother drove it for another 30k miles with no problem, my father got a hold of it to work one winter, put less than 5k miles on it and it literally began to fall apart. This same car my mother had driven the same distance the same amount of time with no problems. Same thing happened with a few other cars. Sometimes it's not the car. Even POS cars, we got a used beater once because we really needed a car and mom managed to make that thing drive for years with no problems despite the fact that it had oil leaks galore, barely had brakes, and a bunch of other things wrong with it and had caught on fire twice prior to us owning it. She put a good 40k miles on it without any major problems and without having to fix anything.

Actually, the history of this is that BMW bought Rover, asset stripped it , and walked away with what they wanted. This car is a BMW. Many years ago, I owned an original mid-1960's Mini. It was 15 years old when I paid £45 for it. I only needed it for six months over an autumn and winter while I did some work on my Triumph TR5. That Mini never missed a beat on me. It was reliable and economical, and drove great. Apart from the generalised scruffiness of a 15 year old car, the only real fault was that the seals on the driveshafts were worn, and it leaked oil from there. When the oil level dropped below the seals, the leaks stopped. I addressed the problem by pouring in a can of Molyslip to make sure the engine stayed lubricated. And all was fine. At the end of 6 months I returned the car to the friend I'd bought it off.
Those old MInis were notorious for rust in the rear subframe, but there was nothing like the money pit horror stories that surround these BMW MInis. Not in a million years would I go near one of these.

Welcome to Mini ownership, i have an 06 JCW. At least yours didn't catch on fire from the power steering leak like mine did...I did all that work (pretty much the same list as yours was wrong with mine with the additional melted parts from the fire) on mine and very nearly pulled the engine to do the clutch. and despite a new oil filter housing and replacing all the little seals it still leaks oil, and now it has a coolant leak to chase down. Owning a mini is a labor of love. This year it was a short in the wiring harness and bad battery cable which I left to the professionals to fix which was also not cheap. Mini's are fun to drive which almost makes all the money spent keeping it alive worth it.

This is a fun car. I own an 2006. They don’t cost nothing to own but it looks like the owner ran this one it into the ground. There are plenty of mods to fix the defects of the design. If you are going to pull their engine out, poly bush everything!!! Suspension, mounts, steering rack, sway bar, etc. Add strut tower plate and brace (a know defect is that the strut tower steel is week). Replace shocks with Koni, not stock shocks which have no refinement. Don’t put run flats back on, ...for lower cost and significant ride improvement. Another known defect is the timing change tensioner which runs off of oil pressure. It might be worth it to inspect. As an owner, when you turn the key, you need to wait for the oil pump to bring up pressure before starting car. Google ‘mini death rattle’. Good luck!!!

You are right, a home mechanic could do all 4 discs and pads in about 6 or 7 hours, I've only ever did it once when i was young and had to save every £ just to keep my car on the road. IIRC it took me about 3 hours to do both front discs and pads. Nowadays despite owning Merc's and Audi's (never BMW's as they are the real money pit of German Luxury Marques) i take my cars to the same independent specialist. The fact you are doing it yourself means that you won't scrimp on maintenance as you're not paying extra money. Often when people buy a German Luxury Marque (Porsche, Merc, Audi, BMW) they don't factor in the maintenance. Take my previous car a 2012 Merc C Class 220D AMG Coupe. Bought when nearly 4 years old in Dec 2015 with 30,000 miles for £15,300, sold it last Sept 2020 with 70,000 miles for £7,900. So basically just over half of what i paid 5 years previously. I didn't scrimp on maintenance and it probably cost £3500 in 5 years for servicing, MOT's, and parts that broke. To be fair there were only 2 parts that broke that WEREN'T wear and tear - a headlamp module and driver door window mech.

I own a couple of Mini's (GEN2; R55 S - N14 and R60 All 4 JCW - N18). Great fun to drive. Surprising roomy cars on the inside. However, you do have to change the oil at twice the OEM recommended frequency and ALWAYS 100% synthetic...5W-30 or 5W-40. You also need to run them with 96+ octane and on the N14, definitely install a catch can. Both the N14 and the N18 are DFI and known to coke up.
Drain and fill the transmission fluid (if automatic) every 60K miles; also a good idea. (NOT flush, just drain and re-fill with new filter kit)
Thermostats go at around 50k miles and are complex/expensive to change...so if you are doing significant maintenance, do this while there is room to do so.
On the N14...be sure to check that the timing chain tensioner is NOT the first rendition, which backed-out/loosened over time. The timing chain will need to be checked and replaced at around 80k miles. If you run the engine under half oil stick too long, you will shorten the timing chain life for sure.
Lastly, a thumb size cap full of seafoam in the oil-fill about 200 miles before and oil change...to clean out any gunk. Especially on the Turbo's oil return line. Installing a good after-market flexible oil return line to these turbo models is also recommended.
Great cars...but you have to stay on top of the maintenance. IMO.
PS: I do wish there were an after-market canned oil filter conversion for these engines...but apparently there is little room to do this kit conversion.

I took it for a drive, and was blown away by how horrible it was. This was 10 years ago and it was a first generation Cooper S, so it wasn't that old, and didn't have many miles.
It felt like you were driving on top of it. I was expecting a sports car like experience with the handling and the driving position, but it was very un-involving. The car didn't lean much but instead you get leaned over in the seats. The supercharger was weaker than I expected, the transmission shifted horrendously, the clutch pedal was way too light, and the steering had a disconnected feeling as well. High pressure fuel pump got recalled and the clutch fork is prone to failure if you use a stiffer aftermarket clutch, but I've never had any problems with things like timing chains or bent valves. I drive it hard and occasionally track it, but as long as I regularly maintenance it and change fluids it works great. Also worth noting that the 2nd gen minis used electric power steering (NOT drive by wire), so all those power steering leaks wouldn't be a problem if you had a 2nd gen lol. But great to see a mini rescue either way, seems like a very rare edition!

Yay! Glad it’s getting fixed. I feel bad for the little guy. Can’t wait to see him fixed and detailed.

Love the duvet headliner! Seriously though supercharged Cooper S’s are plentiful here in the UK and absolute bargains right now.

The busted valves with the broken timing chain is an N14 engine...oil changes often and they do ok. I have the N18 - much better design.

@@me8246 I have no idea. I'm not from the US to know how much one of these special editions are worth and we didn't get anything like it in the UK.
A search for me found one with only 31k miles and they were looking $11'750

Incontinence seems to be a theme at MINI: our 2009 R56 Cooper S with the PSA-BMW 1.6-litre Prince engine needs its fluids checking every week, especially oil to stop the turbo overheating.
It’s also had BMW-funded new timing chain guides that disintegrated with MINI ‘forgetting’ to recall it.
Only 65k miles from new and well on its way to Hooptie status.

Can't wait to see this car done! I have had an R56 John Cooper Works myself. Total disaster too, obviously but such a fun car to drive and amazing cornering!

I have an 05 cooper s. So far very reliable and the most fun car I have owned. I went from an 02 wrx to the mini. The mini is so much sharper than the wrx in every way. Still I love both cars.
