Live and Let Die was the movie that caught my imagination as a kid and brought me into the Bond franchise. His portrayal as Kananga was certainly an iconic part of my childhood! Excellent performance by Yaphet Kotto, may he rest in peace.
In a role that could've been problematic he pulled off a fantastic and memorable performance.
Arguably did even better in 'Alien' -my all-time favorite film.
Great tribute.
What do you mean by "problematic" ? I thought Yaphet did a wonderful performance
Rest in power to this great man. Outstanding actor, one of the greatest to ever do it. He put his heart and soul into each and every single character he played. Respect to a legend...Mr Kotto
Oh man... Live and Let Die were the very first 007 movie I watched as a kid. As a grown up man, it was the first Ian Fleming novel I read. Still I hold this movie in a special corner in my heart. Sad to hear Mr. Big passed away.
Condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. It was extremely nice of him to have become friends throughout the Bond community on a few social media sites. RIP Yaphet Kotto.
Such a great character actor. Kananga has always been one of my favorite villains. Kotto was fantastic alongside the great ensemble cast of Alien. And he was a joy in the underrated action-comedy Midnight Run, another film with an amazing ensemble. Sad to hear of the passing of another member of the Bond family.
"Names is for tombstones baby!"
RIP Sir
What? Really? Man, we’re losing a lot of Bond alumni lately. Sad. Live And Let Die has always been one of my very favourite Bond films. 😔
He was in a great movie directed by Paul Schrader entitled Blue Collar. An absolute must watch film.
Agreed! Always thought it was the 70's answer to ON THE WATERFRONT. Then, you get to watch a young Harvey Keitel AND Richard Pryor alongside Mr. Kotto! Great film that even shows the waining years of Detroit's auto industry from both the worker's view and the Teamsters' view. Shame talent like theirs is so fleeting. God speed, my beautiful brother. May we meet one day, Mr. Yaphet Kotto... 😎🇵🇷🇺🇸📽🗽🦂
A rare movie which Richard Pryor plays a serious role rather than his usual comedian roles.
Kananga , right there with Trevelyan, Goldfinger, Silva, Telly Savalas Blofeld, and Kamal Kahn as my favorite villians.
I'd seen a couple other Bond movies but LALD was the first I bought on home video. As a kid it was fun and exciting, nonstop. As an adult there's more to discover and rediscover.
The cast was well-selected but Kotto really sells Dr Kanaga, a more low-key and down to Earth villain that's a refreshing and improved change over the last few movies' worth of fishy camp capers.
A really great actor, he was also in "In the Heat of the Night" with Caroll O'Connor.
He was also considered for Captain Jean-Luc Picard. I would have loved to have seen any screen tests. Patrick Stewart got the role but Kotto would have embraced it too
RIP Yaphet, thank you for being an iconic Bond villain!!!!!!!!
RIP Parker...Mr. Big...Special Agent Alonso Mosely. See you on the other side. Peaceful Journey. “Can we discuss the bonus situation!”
#TruckersinSpace
Names are for tombstones? Will they say that at the funeral?
My fave 007 film, and Yaphet Kotto was such a great actor. Anything he did, especially in the 70s, was incredible work. Great guy off the screen as well. RIP.
I still watch his films to this day and grew up watching ALIEN and still love it. It's the best science fiction film ever made, pure and fckn simple... Yaphet Kotto rest in peace. ✌️ You won't be forgotten and your memory and joy you've bought to people and viewers alike will live on forever and you'll be missed greatly.
RIP - sorry to know one of my favourite villains died.
Bond: Rust in a peaceless place!

What a fantastic post, Joe! Really sorry to hear of his passing. Makes me feel really old now......
Fantastic actor. Always welcome whenever I saw him on-screen, which was not nearly often enough.
Lets not forget Kester Smith, he was 3rd assistant key grip on Dr. No, I'm sure we can all agree his work on the film left an indelible impact on the franchise.
One of his best roles is in a very little-known TV movie called Night Chase. It's on UA-cam, and anyone who likes him should see it.
One of the greatest Bond villains of all time and LALD is my favorite Bond film .
Quite ironic how many of these actors are passing away in the last year or two, let alone this year!
Something stinks!!!!
Live and let Die, on of the worst bond films... with all due respect to the actors..
RIP YAPHET KOTTO. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.
Damn! I always wanted to meet him! #RestInPower
Names are for tombstones baby.
RIP Mr. Big aka Dr. Kananga
Very underrated actor and beautiful man.
Yes he was
So sad he passed, the same age as my cousin
Not even TMZ reported on this man's passing!
Ain't that a shame!!
RIP Parker.
One of the all time great Bond Villains, though his death scene remains as one of the worst and most preposterous.
I think you mean memorable!
Kotto himself disliked the death scene intensely.
@@bonghunezhou5051 Yes. I have seen him talk about it on another You Tube video.
R I P
He was a great bad guy! Along with the actors who played in his gang! They nailed bringing a sense of danger! When they clashed with Bond! You felt scared for Bond! not the other way around :)
The 2nd non-spectre villain that led the way to the many different Bond antagonists. Rest in Peace.
First (main) non-SPECTER villain would be Auric Goldfinger ?
Alien, Midnight run, Live and let die. Great films and performances. RIP.
Alonzo Mosely FBI
Awwwwh man I never had my chance to meet Mr. Kotto I wish I would have met him you know what I'm saying Great Actor I appreciate Yaphet Kotto rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
man he was a great bond villian, he is one when i see the film now and again, his characters ages greataly his role wasnt sterotypical blacks that we saw in black exploitation, it felt like he was a real buisness man and then knowing that he was also in alien movies, and had a band names after him, he was alot, being james bond can you do the voice actress who also passed away, i think she should be recognized as well, well he lasted pretty long, and he will be memorable for years to come, we havent gotten a great black villian in a long time, i guess the guy from casino royale, but to have one be a boss, and have a seriousness was pretty much ahead of its time, thank you kotto you will be remembered, his memory will live and let live
Really sad to hear this, condolences to his family. Always enjoy watching his interrogation scene with Roger.
RIP! Y you will be missed!
I just watched live and let die a couple of days ago and now to hear this! So sad!
Great villain, great performance, nearly as restrained and poised as Kamal Khan. But, kind of a dumb death.
I'm so sorry for the loss of Kananga The James Bond Villian
RIP Kananga
Names Is For Tombstones Baby
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
R.I.P to a memorable Bond villain. Mr Kotto🙏🍸
Grandissimo attore!
RIP
Nice tribute!
RIP! He was also in the OG Star Trek films. One or two of them?
No, he had no connection to OG ST films (perhaps confusing him with Paul Winfield? ).
Nice montage pal!
william😀😀
Parker stood up to Big Chap like a BOSS!
Yaphet kotto was a amazing villian
RIP.
