Hello RogueRxyce ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, the bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band. This is a deep emotional and personal song for both the band and the fans, and talks about the inner torment of Tuomas Holopainen, the band's composer and keyboardist, dealing with the backlash after they fired the band's first female singer, Tarja Turunen, back in 2005. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..)
The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer.
That being said, I will add here the message left the other days by some old fans of the band,
@Fabrizio Gorla: " To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs.

Tuff one to start with - the grand suicidal depression tour, composed in music and poetic lyrics - and presented by Floor, the greatest singer in the galaxy - she is THE storyteller, that will take you into the musical journey of your life - if you dare!!
And this is Symphonic Metal - the merge of symphony and metal music, composed in chapters like symphony music.
Nightwish are versatile like no one else you have heard - they have it all.
    Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 👍 💪 🤘 🤘
And enjoy the ride into the Nightwish Universe - if you want to experience another level of music and storytelling.

Written by the keyboardist about his feelings after the departure of their original vocalist & all the hell he received from fans about it being his fault, rather than committing physical suicide he did it through this song. Hopefully you continue your Nightwish journey.

I was very sad about Tarja's removal b/c I had been a fan since Nightwish was formed but once I got the reasons sorted out in my mind, I understood why it had to be. On the other hand I quit watching Nightwish b/c I felt Anette did not have the voice to sing Tuomas' songs.
The next time I saw the band was at Wacken. After hearing Floor, I knew Tuomas had found his singer.

You need to watch with the lyrics on. The story is about the emotional toll the keyboardist went through after the departure of the original singer. Would also Highly recommend their 2013 Wacken performance of Ghost Love Score. Damn near a perfect song performed perfectly.

Toumas is, the keyboard, is a musical genius. The band is backed up by the London symphony orchestra with music written by Toumas . Classical with music written in movements. Toumas, 9 rears in A conservatory, aka PhD. Most grew up in a small town in Finland. Yes they knew each other. Four members started in 1973.
You must study the music to understand just how sad this piece actually is. You may notice that some of the band-members check on Toumas during the performance to make sure he was OK. For an artist like this, intensely personal only begins to describe the music.

Welcome to Nightwish! You're truly going down the rabbit hole now. Their female lead, Floor Jansen, is one of the most versatile singers in the world. Listen to as much of her stuff as you can. She was classically trained in opera, which is why you hear it.

I can tell by your body language that you’re not a metal person and that’s fine not everyone is but I want to point out how much respect I have for you to even give it a listen and a proper reaction. When you get a chance I highly recommend you look up the lyrics to this song and rewatch the video. It will help tremendously. By the way I’m a subscriber because of the fact that you are fair and honest on your reactions and not fake like so many out there. Please stay well. ✌️EDIT : I commented before the end of the video then I heard you say you were going to look up the lyrics so scratch that part of my comment. 🤣

❤️ thank you for reacting to this song. This song hits home for me, I can relate to it too much 😢 I’m just like Tuomas, I didn’t follow through, thankfully.
When I used to watch TPATP, I would replay all of these terrible things that happened to me, why I was taken to that point….of wanting to do it.
NOW….I watch TPATP, and see that I can endure traumatic things, and come out much stronger!!!! But this song does have its way of hitting you right in the feels. I’m grateful he wrote this in song form, instead of the follow through. Nightwish has changed me in ways I cannot explain. Their music has healed a gaping hole in my heart ♥️ and soul. I am forever indebted to them for this very reason. Great reaction to one of the world’s most powerful songs!!!

That was a beautiful reaction from a person that was clueless about the background. I will explain it for you, the keyboardist and founder of the band, Tuomas had to fire their first singer Tarja, and went into a depression and wrote this during the depression. The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and dear in all their hearts, especially Tuomas who considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point, they had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva. According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep dark depression. He even considered ending the band and committing suicide. He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to not do it in real life. To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are sung to him that his real mother said to him at the time of this darkness in him. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love. Nice reaction.

It is refreshing to see a honest reaction from someone who doesn’t understand the context but just reacts to the music. I could see you were overwhelmed by the power of this song. Yes, I agree lookup the lyrics and then re-listen to this song.
Others will point the way to the context and meaning of the song but I would suggest you listen several times after reading the lyrics to grasp your own understanding of this song from your perspective.
Others from the Nightwish Army May comment that you should have researched this song before watching and listening 🎧. Don’t pay attention as this is you channel with your own perspective in your reaction.
Know only that this was written and composed by Tuomas the keyboard player and sung Floor Jansen and Macro, the bearded bass player (the wizard). All the band members did wonderful job playing at this live concert.

There is another video of the same song but with the lyrics appearing on the screen on UA-cam. That one is the best for newcomers to NW. This is called symphonic metal mainly because of the backing track of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and choir in the background. The keyboardist Tuomas writes all the music including the music for the Orchestra and Choir. He's a musical genius. This band does not have a bad song. They are all brilliant.

This is quite a jump in the cold water. Most reactors only dare to touch this song when they have familiarized themselves with Nightwish by doing several other songs first.
This is probably the most intense (not the heaviest) Nightwish song because of the rollercoaster through which it takes you and because of the topic (the suicidal depression of the composer - Tuomas the keyboard player).
BTW the last part is Tuomas turning to his parents after friends abandoned him and it is his mother talking to him.

First off let me just say, "WELCOME TO THE ARMY!!!!!"
We, in the Nightwish Army, have to remember that even though the band has been around since 1996 and have have cultivated a strong fan following, there are MANY who are new to Nightwish. More so since Covid and world wide quarantine has bored people perusing YT like crazy. So it's to be expected that there are those who do not know Nightwishes' back story. Watching various First time reactions I usually come across two main reactions: 1. Why/how come I haven't heard of this band before? and 2. What is this type/genre of music called? I think that there needs to be a little bit of understanding and teaching for those who are being exposed to Nightwish, and their back story, for the first time from those like myself, who have been huge fans from the very beginning and can remember only being able to get their music from the "International Music Section" from the local FYE and BORDERS because NOBODY else had even heard of Nightwish.
    So with that being said:
I think in order to understand the band and it's fan base you have to know a bit about the band first, what drives it and the pure creative inspiration that IS Nightwish. So, here's the skinny on what's been happening with Nightwish through the years, the decades. Floor is the third singer, believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera performance was Tarja's (the first singers) last performance before the band had to let her go: ua-cam.com/video/tL25rbnvM4o/v-deo.html The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical based band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, writer, and composer of ALL their music, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all really good friends and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Some credit her being heavily influenced by her businessman husband Marcelo Cabuli, who incidentally was overheard on numerous occasions making statements that "Tarja was the face of Nightwish" and that she "could do much better without the band". Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette (the second singer) and she was with them for a time until the whole debacle at the Denver concert when they all got seriously sick and she had to be rushed to the emergency room... then she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer. The song The Poet and The Pendulum, which was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the very point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The Poet and The Pendulum was Tuoman's written suicide, INSTEAD of doing the actual act. The song is written in 5 parts: 1. White Lands Of Empathica 2. Home 3. The Pacific 4. Dark Passion Play
    5. Mother and Father
During this 5th part, in the live video, you'll see Emppu (lead guitarist) and Marco (bass guitarist) go over to stand next to Tuomas (the keyboardist) to give support. That last part, part V is titled Mother and Father for a very good reason. As with everyone who's experienced something devastating on an emotional scale, as humans, we go back to our foundation, where we feel safest and protected... home. Part V has the words from Tuomas's mother said to him when he went home, it's one of the reasons that he asks for all of the vocals to be taken out of his ear mix during the performing of this part.
As with all emotional trauma's in life we have to eventually stand up, dust ourselves off, and go on. To fully encompass moving on, cleanly with a fresh start, we have to forgive and love. This is encompassed so beautifully with the ending lyrics of this song. "In the end I will always love you....the beginning." Such a very very hauntingly beautiful piece of music.
Also you will notice that the drummer Jukka Nevalainen was replaced by Kai Hahto due to Jukka having debilitating insomnia, they've also added, by this point, a remarkable multi instrumentalist with Troy Donockley. As you by now well know there are many many songs where Marco (the bassist guitarist) and Floor harmonize beautifully both of their amazing vocal ranges a compliment to each other.
As I said above, Tuomas (the keyboardist), other then doing the odd collaborations every now and then with other members of the band, writes not only ALL of Nightwish's lyrics, but writes the music for ALL the instruments, as well as writes ALL the orchestral backing tracks that you will hear playing in the background of their songs. Tuomas has been referred to by other YT reactors across YT Land as the "Metal Mozart" because every single masterpiece of Nightwish's that you'll hear comes out of that brilliant head of his. He is a complete musical genius and I'm a firm believer that he will go down as one of this generations greatest composers. This band's talent range is extensive and amazing. Individually every single member are playing with other bands while with Nightwish or are sharpening their solo careers. To get a picture of just how talented these performers are I suggest looking up each one individually.
Also note that their Imaginaerum Album goes hand and hand with the movie, Imaginaerum by Nightwish (featuring their second singer Anette Olzon): ua-cam.com/video/qMhwh0-xcLo/v-deo.html IF you haven't watched it yet, I highly suggest that you do because it's a complete music driven, cinematic visual masterpiece. You say a lot that their music has layers, well so does this movie. It's brilliantly amazing.
As for suggestions towards your next Nightwish reaction I suggest The Greatest Show On Earth from their Tampere 2015 concert: ua-cam.com/video/bl6lUfIMkGM/v-deo.html Heads up though, this performance clocks in at around 21 minutes long. And you have to watch it from this concert, from the beginning ALL the way through till the ending of the credits or you'll miss so much.
As I also said above, I've been a huge fan from the beginning and still have yet to be disappointed with Nightwish, as most would say "There are NO bad Nightwish songs!"
As always, listen, appreciate, and enjoy!! God Bless!!!

I realize that "The Poet and the Pendulum" was a patreon recommendation, but it's not normally a good starting point for the Nightwish experience. There is a lot of unpleasant band history behind this song. "Storytime" or "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013 are typically the best starting experiences and more upbeat songs. This is the ultimate Symphonic Metal band on the planet. Symphonic metal music is metal, sometimes very heavy, with melodic symphonic and orchestral overtones. It is unfortunate that you were recommended this song as your introduction to Nightwish. You are right you were not ready for this epic performance, no one is, but it would have been much better for you if you had viewed one of a number of other performances as an introduction. Hope you give them another view for songs such as Ghost Love Score, Nemo, or Elan. Stay safe.

This is a hefty, moody song with a lot of context and a strange place to start listening to Nightwish. But there's no "wrong" place, just some that may be better for specific people than others. I hope this sends you down the rabbit hole, because this has been my favorite band for 17-18 years (oh god, who let me get old??) and it's been so much fun watching them become a huge deal on youtube this past year!
I am enjoying how I see you really LISTENING even though this isn't your usual genre -- a lot of people relatively new to metal have a hard time hearing the individual elements and complexities because all they hear at first is just noise, so I can tell you have a really musical ear and an open mind, in the best possible way

This song (and some others on the Dark Passion Play record - Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed) are about the band and the fall out from when they parted ways with their original singer. This particular song is about Tuomas, the Keyboard player and founding member, who literally wrote this song to save himself from committing suicide in real life - he did it lyrically in the song instead. When they very publicly sacked Tarja after the End of an Era show a lot of the fan base blamed Tuomas and so he got a lot of flak for it (even the Finnish Prime Minister got involved!!) and he took it so badly he was on the verge of committing suicide. On top of all the fan pressure and angst, he also had to deal with parting ways with a life long friend (and some say he was also in love with her). The final quiet section is based on things Tuomas's parents said to him.

welcome to the fantastic musical universe of Nightwish and Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music.
the lyrics of their songs can often seem a little cryptic, this is because the author, Tuomas Holopainen, who is also the keyboard player, is both a musician and a poet, so these songs always have a deep meaning and convey intense emotions .
this performance of "the poet and the pendulum" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "ghost love score" from 2013 concert in Wacken and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).
of course there are also studio versions of their songs but where the band is at their best is in live performances, so to start this fantastic journey into the world of symphonic metal music, I suggest you start with the incredibly epic 2013 concert in wacken , with the songs: "ghost love score", "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"

First off.. great reaction. This is such a heavy song. I still remember how I felt the first time I heard it with headphones on. Chills.. just chills.. Anyway, not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but the instrument you thought was a clarinet was actually an Oboe. Now... Floor Jansen. She has such a unique instrument. She is one of the few who can handle different styles ( sometimes in the same piece ) and make it look easy and sound amazing. Thanks for reviewing this tune, it is a wonderful tune, but also so dark. I know the Nightwish Army has come in and made recommendations, and I can't agree with them enough. Ever Dream isn't too "in your face" and is worth a listen. I have also suggested people give Ghost Love Score a listen or Storytime.

I really wish you knew more about the band's background and gone through the usual introduction as there was a lot to take in before this song.
It's about the keyboard player's suicide (in the song) that had to do with the firing of their original singer, Tarja Turunen.
Tuomas killed himself in the song so he didn't have to do it in real life.
Backlash from the fans and the media for letting Tarja go caused him to become very emotional and mentally unstable.
If you caught the guitar player going to talk to him early on in the song, and towards the end, the bass player did the same, they were making sure he was ok. This song is very emotional for him. So much so, that sometimes he asks the sound engineer to remove Floor's vocals from his monitors so he doesn't endure more pain.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.

You noticed when both guitarist, Emppu and bassist, Marko walked over to the keyboardist, Tuomas as sort of moral support. You read reason for this song. Tuomas went thru hell after Tarja, original singer was either left or fired from the band. Fans blamed him for her departure. So, from 2005 to 2007, he put Nightwish on hiatus. Then he regrouped Nightwish with a singer named Anette Olzon in 2007. She left the band prior 2013, they hired Floor Jansen (shown here) as a touring vocalist for a tour. Floor had to learned all Nightwish songs in 48 hours.
After that tour ended, Floor became full time member of Nightwish. Wizard looking bassist, Marko left the band early this year for personal reasons.

That keyboardist, Tuomas is a classically trained musician from his home country of Finland. He studied music at its Institute of Music. Tuomas and Tarja were childhood friends going to that school in 1996. That year is when He created Nightwish. At 1st, Tuomas didn't like rock or Metal until one of his friend took him to Guns N Roses concert I believed.... Tuomas was hooked. Due to his classically trained background, Tuomas combined Classical and Metal to be Symphonic Metal. Interesting Fact is that Metal can be traced back to Classical music by such as Mozart. Fans called Tuomas, Mozart of 21st Century.

Hey RogueRxyce. Thanks for a great reaction to a great song. This is an extremely emotional song, so you might want to check out the backstory and read the lyrics.
In particular, I love how Tuomas borrowed from "The Pit and The Pendulum", a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear.
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he raged a war against God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I wonder if Toumas's anguish was caused not because he fired Tarja (the original singer) from the band, but because he felt publicly tortured and judged by his so-called fans for doing it the way he did.
Also want to say your gorgeous and I love your smile. Greetings from the UK

Just found you. You have a sweet, wholesome quality which I really appreciate and I plan to watch more. Nightwish is my second favorite band and I've come to realize I'm really fixated on watching other people experience them for the first time. I already looked through your videos and am sad to see this appears to be the only one you've reviewed. I would highly advise not to stop there. Nearly every song Tuomas writes is an epic. Romanticide is just one example I'd recommend if you want more of a sense of that.
The reason Floor's voice sounds so operatic at times is because she was classically and theatrically trained. She has a wide range, not just in pitch, but in versatility and technique, unlike her predecessors. Tarja was a good friend of Tuomas's and was invited to join the band before they even heard her sing. She has extremely limited ability, in that every song she sings is delivered in the most over-the-top, stuffy way I've ever heard with a thick accent on top of it. It was one of the two reasons I could never stand Nightwish before Floor came along.
Anette was the other one. She has even more limited ability, in that she has NO vocal range in terms of pitch or technique. She doesn't have the breath control or training of Floor or even Tarja. She is an incredibly mediocre singer that the music had to be customized to suit during her time with the band. Tuomas couldn't do everything he wanted with Anette as Nightwish's vocalist, but that wasn't even why she didn't last. Like Tarja, she came to believe they needed her more than she needed them and tried to flex and see where it got her. She started making up excuses to flake on and punish them, even going as low as to invent fake illnesses which turned out to be bogus and ditching a tour. In the lurch with no singer, they crossed paths with another band, Kamelot, whose singers filled the role in an entirely impromptu fashion, having to print and refer to lyric sheets in order to perform the songs at all and STILL doing a far superior job to anything Anette ever produced!
Finally, still out a singer and in the middle of a string of tour dates, they contacted Floor who later said she was depressed and in a slump after the end of her previous band. She had about as little time to learn and practice the material as anyone has between one show and the next, yet managed to magnificently trounce Tarja and Anette while seeming to instantly win over Nightwish's most resolute fans. They kept going until the lockdowns, which you could tell she was dismayed and frustrated about. Then, a year or so ago, Marko, the vikingesque bassist with the long, twisty beard, finally left. They tried to tone down their public response and kept it vague, but you could tell they were hurt. I hoped it was a matter of time until he returned to them, but they finally dissolved recently altogether.
This is pretty devastating to me, as I have been a fanatic about Floor since pretty far back. My favorite "band" of all time, which is not actually a band, but a project named Ayreon created by Dutch (like Floor) composer and musician, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, has featured Floor frequently from 2000 (background vocals on My House on Mars) 'til recently. So, being that my two favorite musical endeavors of all time involve probably my favorite singer of all time, it's hard to accept the loss.
In any case, as with most such things, you can connect to the emotional factors at play the more you look into the back story, so I wanted you to know everything they've been through and why their coming together is so meaningful, as you seem to appreciate that kind of thing.
    Thanks for the video.

The journey was Tuomas' stages of grief after having to part ways with the original singer and long time friend, Tarja. It was a decision that tore him up inside and this was his way of expressing that and dealing with the emotions (a healthy way to be fair!). The different parts are acts that represent the stages he went through. For the full backstory you can look it up to truly understand. Great reaction

This song more than any other Nightwish song it is helpful to know the back story. Tuomas the who writes most of the music, had a very difficult time when they lost their first vocalist of 9 years. It was very public, and many people including the President of Finland voicing their own opinions. Tuomas in his depression started considering suicide, and it was his parents that were able to bring him out of his depression, as we see with the end of this song.

The female vocalist Floor Jansen is an incredible vocalist. She can sing in any genre and kill it. You should check out her performances from a show called Beste Zangers where she covers other artists songs (including an incredible cover of Shallow by Lady Gaga, and an opera tune from The Merry Widow). None of it is metal. You will be blown away.

    Nightwish Army Germany checking in.
Welcome to one of the deepest Rabbitholes you can dive into.
Bad think that they urged you to start with one of the deepest songs from Nightwish.....I would have recommended the "normal" way...Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013.
But it is like it is. You met our windmilling Valkyrie Queen on this one. And you did well I have to admit. Also a good Idea to have a look on the lyrics.
Welcome ! If you decide to go on the Journey (Gabriel Bardac already provided you with THE list) the Army will accompany you. I really hope you decide to broaden your horizon with more stuff from our famous Finnish Band.
Floor Jansen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Valkyries, Lady of Nightwish and Protector of our Metal Realm. Long may she reign. Bow, mortal !

Nightwish , are my favourite symphonic and progressive / power metal band. Tuomas Holopainen , the keyboardist , is the composer of this song. Is a sensational roller coaster.
He wrote that song for relief for his dark thoughts of commiting suicide in the past . He blamed himself for firing the first fem vocalist . The soprano Tarya Turrunen. And as you see the lead guitarist and the bassist/ back vocalist are going close to him all time , because that song is a big burden for him to hear and perform!
In that song commites lyrical suicide and finds peace at the end .
First part intro , is a choral part '' white lands of Empathica '' that announces the incident of the suicide . After verses 1 and 2 and choruses , are his believes of being the most hatefull man in the world because of his actions . '' A whore for the cold world '' !
The Pacific , is his search for releif from his memories that hurt him .
Dark Passion Play , is the acceptance of his punishmen to his hateful actions , and is ready to be '' crucified '' like 2nd robber to the right of Christ '' as he says.
The bridge, is his dark thoughts come back again and torture him , and he want to escape this .
Finally he goes to accept his fate and lets the blade in the end to fall upon him . As you see he does the sign of death to his neck himself before lights come out .
Finally the final part '' Mother and Father '' , is the hearing of his parents comfort him and tell him to find peace at last at a shore that hes going to find himself , and no more bleeding .
The song is a litteral tribute to Edgar Allan Poe's '' The pit and the Pendullum ''

Gabriel will be along shortly to provide more details about the band and the song. In short, what you just heard was the entire Kuebler-Ross cycle of grief condensed into a single musical composition.
This is NOT a recommended introductory selection for this group. There's too much backstory needed. But you still handled it well.

Given what you liked most here, try Meadows of Heaven (studio version) by Nightwish next. It's the prior singer Anette Olzon's best song. And very much the orchestral style but an equally brilliant instrumentation.
As for Floor Jansen (this singer), Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013 is the usual starting point. She's quite brilliant solo too. And the acoustic versions of "How's the Heart" and "Nemo" have the same angelic/eerie qualities.
And if you want to see who she really is, Emma Heesters sings her own song "Strong" to her on Beste Zangers 2019. Not to be missed.

This song was written by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen after the departure of original lead singer Tarja Turunen, and reflects the emotional journey he went through as a result of her departure, as they had been long-time friends. It's a song the band rarely performs live anymore because it tends to bring back too many bad memories and emotions for Toumas.

This is a song about what the keyboard player (Tuomas) went thru when he had to fire their original singer (Tarja), the singer in this video is Floor Jansen and shes their 3rd singer.
In this video, your reaction video, on @11:20 you can see Tuomas mimmicking the pendulum slashing his throat, so yeah, i think you can understand whats this song about.

The song is about toumas the keyboard player & created & writer of Nightwish
His undieing love for the original female sing Tarja.
How she became very devor like threatening & holding the band to ransom saying if she would leave nightwish at a moments notice if she didn't get her way.
She thought she had band in the palm of her hand putting rest of band through hell.
But toumas was besotted & totally in love with her.& almost broke him.
Then one day after last gig of the year
He fired her then she played victim
Toumas was so heartbroken his tried to kill himself he was almost dead but his parents found him just in the nick of time.
He almost took his own life because of Tarja who didn't care for anyone but herself who was will to try & destroy tounas & whole band so she could have her deva status
His nickname is metal Mozart that's the short version of story.

Please give them another chance and listen to “Ghost Love Score” live at Wacken. You will love it. I am quite certain of it. Then perhaps “Storytime”, “Romanticide”, “Song of Myself”, “Everdream”, all amazing.

The story in short. In 2005, after their last concert on the "End of an Era" tour, the band jointly released an open letter to their fans in which they sited that they could no longer work with the current lead singer, Tarja Turunen, due to several reasons and she was fired. The keyboardist and main composer of about 90-95% of their music, Toumas Holopainen is also a childhood friend of the singer. After the letter was released despite it being a joint decision by the entire band, Toumas took the brunt force of all the backlash and hate from the fans, media and even the Finish president got involved (Nightwish is from Finland).
This all caused Toumas to go into a downward spiral of depression and suicidal thoughts and he fled/retreated back to his parents home where he regained some perspective and calm after all the turmoil and wrote this song as an "Artistic suicide" to release all the feelings and thoughts he had about actually committing suicide for real.
When you read the lyrics you will understand the song much better.
Welcome to the wonderful world of symphonic metal and imho the best band in that genre. If you decide to continue this Nightwish journey you will find that he's a masterful composer and no song is like the other. They all take you on wondrous journeys both lyrically and musically.

Wow, what a way to introduce yourself to Nightwish. Certainly not the easiest of their songs to listen to, either lyrically or musically. Essentially the Keyboard player Tuomas Holopainan suffered with serious depression after the band parted ways with their original singer, Tarja Turunen, and the backlash about how it was done. He decided that he had a choice, to kill himself or write a song about killing himself. Thankfully he chose the latter as a form of catharsis.
I would recommend several other Nightwish songs to get a feel for the band, many of which have been listed below so I won't bother doing it again.
