Let's all be thankful that Tuomas killed himself in this masterpiece so he wouldn't do it in life. The world would be a much darker place without his shining light in it. This composition is a master class in how to tell a story and Floor brings such incredible emotion to it. Loved your reaction to this. Be well.

Haven't heard the Annette version and frankly I don't want to, no degradation towards her but I didn't like how her tone meshed with the band in the songs I did hear with her on.

@@MrChoobsabre Ironically, her two albums are the band's best sellers. Additionally, you implied degradation towards her and contradicted yourself by not liking nor even wanting to hear her on the studio version. Can you not appreciate both? Your comment makes you out to be a tunnel-visioned fanboy. I like both versions and appreciate both for their sound and what they project.

@@michaeldover I'll concede that there is some disrespect in the way I worded the comment, not my intention. I just personally didn't like the vocal tone of what I heard, it's not like I can force myself to enjoy it.
However I do have respect for her, the band and plenty of fans loved what she did; judging by what you said about those albums it sounds like she also exposed Nightwish to a larger audience and really helped the band prosper. I appreciate all of that and am not knocking her as a person when I say I don't want to listen to those songs.

    • @cydrych
      @cydrych 2 роки тому +8

@@michaeldover not liking a persons vocal tone after listening to multiple songs and deciding to not listen to more isn’t degrading, it’s a matter of taste and preference. Especially since they acknowledged the talent. I have heard multiple songs by Beyoncé and I think she is an incredibly talented singer. That being said, I don’t like the style of music she sings and I’m not a fan of how she chooses to use dynamics. I have no desire to hear anything else from her. That doesn’t mean I am denigrating her or her talent.

Tuomas is not only a genius, but he is a reverse empath. An empath can feel other's emotions. Tuomas can take his feelings and make us all feel them. My heart wrenches for Tuomas every time I hear this song and feel how he felt during those dark days after firing Tarja.

  • @ristohyvarinen8448

Emppu went to Tuomas to see he is ok. One interview Tuomas told that in the early times with this song it was so painful for him to hear the lyrics so he asked the audioguys cut the mics off in his inears. He also told that he had to end his days in this song so he did have to do it in real life. One little detail, if you count the time were it was whispered about three minutes, in 3 minutes all comes to end. At the end Emppu and Marko goes to Tuomas to support him. The last part is Mother and Father who really had said those words we hear in this song. Tears are ok, this is very emotional song and it goes straight to your heart. I have listened so many times and every time it hits. It makes me think and stop, how the life of mine is going. For me it helps to go through hard days. It's like a painkiller for head ache. You know, I have watched this video a thousand times, and seen a thousand reactions to it, and I just realized now that the camera doesn't once focus on the audience at any point in this song. It ONLY focuses on the band, really telling the story that this is about Tuomas, and he wrote this song for him and the band, and not for anyone else. All of their other videos they generally cut to the audience, will show people singing along, but not here.

I think the song that he was talking about that you're referencing is actually Master Passion Greed, because he, Emppu, and Marko just don't have the anger in them anymore that was expressed in the song with regards to Tarja (and Marcelo). It's why MPG was never played live, and never will be. Poet and the Pendulum iirc continues to be a staple song for their shows, and isn't likely to change. It's just too much of a masterpiece to not play it, kind of like Greatest Show on Earth now.

I'm not a musician, but I think you can compare Marko's playing/singing ability to the best F1 drivers, who can drive a car phenomenally but also have room to spare in the brain department to think about other things. I'm guessing that Marko's playing the bass is part muscle memory/auto-pilot and part sheer technique & talent, but on top of that he can also sing his part because he has that "room to spare" in his head.

I sobbed like a baby the first time I heard this song a bout a year ago. I went in completely blind to the backstory of this song, but for me... it was putting into words everything I had ever felt when I was suicidal... it hit me like a ton of bricks and I broke when the eulogy was read and part V started... Mother and Father. It reminded me of the words my own mother said to me, pulling me back from the brink of just ending it all. I still have a hard time getting through this song on a good day, it's one of the few I'll skip if I'm in the car driving and it comes on, because I can't be bawling like a child while I'm doing 70 down the freeway.

Funfact: Marco had been singing and playing since early 80s, and when he became the frontman of the close to legendary finnish metal-band Tarot, he sang while playing the bass. Yeah he got some experience.
Another one. In the middle of the song you hear this boy say "......For years I've been strapped unto this altar
Now I only have three minutes and counting
I just wish the tide would catch me first and give
me a death I always longed for." 3 minutes later you hear the blade fall, and you see Tuomas himself at the back of the keyboard "cut his throat" with the hand. So powerful!
    Good reaction btw
P.S. a little sidenote: during perfoming the song he at certain occasions make the soundguy to mute the vocals to his IEMs so he cant hear it.

Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have that started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now

What slays me about this song, isn't just the lyrics or the singing, but the exquisite orchestration, elements of solo cello, being used in its mot sobering and sorrowful ranges, followed by the blast of wind (mainly trombones and low horns, stabbed by higher strings in the more dramatic sections). Then the solo oboe comes in at the end, just rips your heart apart, just to make you feel worse, then the higher strings come in playing that lush counter melody, just in case you are not already in pieces. This song never fails to bring me to tears.
If I ever got the chance to play alongside Nightwish as a violinist my life would be complete.

All that can be said about the song, Tuomas being a genius, Floor the most incredible singer ever, Kai, Marko, Emppu... everything is just perfect. This song is an emotional rollercoaster. Once you become invested in this band, tis song hits very hard. This song took inspiration from the Edgar Allen Poe short story "The Pit and the Pendulum". This was a story about impending doom and how the human mind reacts to the fear and mental anguish which comes during the process of waiting for the end. This composition takes it to the level of a tragic short movie. Tuomas wrote this as a cathartic experience and a way to bury that part of his soul that died in this breakup. Having to dismiss Tarja from the band caused him so much heartache. Followed by severe Depression and mental anguish caused by the negative reaction from the fans and the media. Did you notice how the song starts with the lyrics "The End, The songwriters dead". The end of Nightwish with Tarja. Then toward the end just before the cries from the grave you hear Floor say "The Beginning". The beginning of a new Nightwish, with Annette. Floor came later. It is amazing how well she sings and tells the story of the episode from the bands history. Even though she did not go through it when it happened.

Thank you for acknowledging the talent that Marko showed playing those complicated chords while singing. He’s so talented and it saddens me he’s not with his Nightwish family but mental health takes priority.

Have you noticed the ‘only three minutes and counting’ phrase? Watch what happens after exactly three minutes.
To me this is their best song so far. So deep. 😢 see Wikipedia for the story behind this song.

@1:50 "I suspect this will be more chill, rather than the heavier stuff".
Tuomas: I take that as a challenge sir!
What I find so amazing about this song, is how it can have an emotional affect on so many people, who are not even involved with the people this song is about. To me, it just shows how talented a songwriter Tuomas is. This song just grabs you. And having Floor sing this song, just takes this song to such a higher level.

I have watched countless reactions to this song and I think you are the first to call out how remarkable it was for him to be singing while playing that bass piece. It actually distracts me from the song each time I watch it because I'm blown away watching him as he's walking up and down the fretboard so flawlessly while singing without so much as a glance down.
Loved the reaction and the honest tears you tried so hard to contain Sharlene. It's amazing how Tuomas is able to put pure emotion into music and words in such a way that it resonates so strongly with so many people. When you know the backstory and see the raw emotion on his face, if it doesn't move you in some way you may need to check for a pulse. ;)

This is not just a simple song... it's a Symphonic Artwork... Tuomas is an absolute genius and Floor is simply a force of nature, powerful and engaging... both as a singer and as a performer... her voice strikes the soul!!! Nightwish absolutely fantastic!!! 🤘🖤🤘💥

Don't feel bad, I've lost count of how many times I've cried from listening to this song. The combination of Floor's emotional and haunting voice combined with the raw emotion that we get from Tuomas gets me every time, to be honest. I think this, along with Greatest Show on Earth, are their masterpieces. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. This is the only song that has ever made me really feel so much that I had to cry. Thank you for the reaction.

The loneliness and frustration capped off by a sense of peace that I felt from day one listening to this song brings tears to my eyes pretty much every time. The movie that plays in my head while the song unspools over those 14 minutes is better than anything Hollywood could ever give me.

Absolute masterpiece about depression, suizid and a new beginning.
    Nice reaction guys 🤘
Tuomas has managed very well to describe the different stages of depression. In this respect, everyone should find a similar meaning in it. Anyone who has suffered really well from depression. Sorry but others just can't have a say. Only those who have gone through something like this themselves can understand this.

This song is a big one. One of their epics:
Tuomas wrote 3 songs that appeared on Dark Passion Play which was the album following Tarja's departure that seem to deal directly with their emotions.
    1) Poet & The Pendulum: The stages of depression that can lead to suicide.
    2) Bye Bye Beautiful: Possibly a goodbye song to Tarja?
    3) Master Passion Greed: A song aimed directly at Traja's husband who the band believes is mostly responsible for how Tarja changed. And they are really, really pissed in that song.

For myself I experienced the most emotion when the song slowed in the parts “Pacific”and “Home” the purity of Floors voice unlocked a wave of emotion, all of them, sad, happy, angry, overwhelmed ...the uplifting aspect I find in this song is that we can hear it, and Tuomas is still here sharing even more of his musical vision with all of us, ultimately I find this to be a song of redemption. If not in word then in theme.

Well, I have the same reaction as Sharlene. Every time I hear this song, it brings tears. You see, I lost somebody I loved too, like Tuomas. When you try your most to keep relationships, sometimes you leave it all on the ground. If nobody cares, the loss is so overwhelming, you can just try to mitigate it, but in the end you know it's lost. I had a band a long time ago, so I feel what Tuomas is going through with this song. It goes beyond that, transcending to real life, like an exposed wound that never heals. Anyway, great song and reaction.

Sharlene, please don't be embarrassed with your tears, I'm a 51 year old man & I tear up every time with this masterpiece, also with other songs & movies, that's what art's suppose to do to you.
This is one of the most special works of art & I think it can stand proudly alongside the best of progressive rock's & classic rock legends.
For me, the breaking point in the song is Floor singing the 'Mother and Father' part towards the end. There is no way to stay indifferent to that.
Keep on reacting to NW, you do a really great work :-)
    Cheers from Israel
