    My advice is:
    1. Make sure you know the size of the watch you are getting before buying. I've had to get rid of some of my first watches that were too big. In my experience, it is impossible to discern a watch's size from photos on the internet.
    2. Make sure you understand the differences between movements. I've seen countless negative reviews of automatic watches because the buyer didn't know that they are less accurate than quartz.
    3. Buy your watch on a bracelet if you can. You can replace it with another strap, but a bracelet that curves to fit your watch case is the hardest strap to find aftermarket. However, you can ignore this rule if you know that the bracelet is poor quality.
    4. Read the negative reviews of a watch that you are going to buy. Look for any common complaints and be prepared to deal with them.
    5. Don't believe anyone who tells you that one type of watch is always better than another. A quartz watch is may be better for you than a mechanical. There is a lot of snobbery in the watch community, and you shouldn't buy a watch just because it is better in someone else's opinion.

    Buy an automatic seiko to begin and go from there, and stay away from fashion watches. That's all you need to know

      Seiko sports is a decent buy with a 48 hr reserve charge for the automatic and it is a diver watch with moving bezel

      I don't get it, what is so wrong about fashion watches? Some of them are quite beautiful, some even use swiss movements, most use good quality Japanese, what is so damn bad about them?

    • @Corndog4382
      @Corndog4382 8 років тому +9

      +Justin Bennet They are fine if you are willing to pay over 10 times what watch is actually worth. Companies like Versace will put a cheap Chinese Quartz movement into a terribly finished cheap case and make a $50 watch into a $800 watch just by putting their name on it.

      @justinbennet573 8 років тому +1

      +Corndog4382 oh no! I'm talking 100-200 usd at maximum! After that you are being ripped off LOL
      A few years ago I bought myself a Police fashion watch, paid around 120 usd brand new, I just loved the way it looked, very unique, and it's running fine until today, good accuracy, the crystal is a very good mineral cos it's perfect until now, I already changed the battery and checked the movement, it's a miyota! So, no complains

    • @Corndog4382
      @Corndog4382 8 років тому +2

      +Justin Bennet Oh okay. Yeah for under $200 you might as go with anything that you love the look of. As long as the brand isn't screwing you over when It comes to cost, then fashion watches really aren't bad. However, I generally prefer automatic watches, so I don't have to deal with them anyways.

    I'm a pen collector and I prefer fountain pens over ballpoints, even though the latter are more practical while the former is more elegant and has a certain romance and beauty of craftsmanship behind them. I guess this is the same with mechanical vs quartz movement.

    Go to Walmart and buy a Timex Expedition . Then, get yourself a job and make sure you arrive everyday on time . When the battery of your Timex dies in about 5 years , you should have enough money for your first entry level luxury watch .

    For beginners, I would recommend buying a watch where it won't be such a hassle or expense to return if you don't like it (brick and mortar stores, Amazon.com, etc.) ... MORE IMPORTANTLY, don't obsess about accidental dings, scuffs and scratches on your watch. Each mark tells a story and makes the watch look more experienced and loved.

I've snatched myself up a grey orient bambino and am now looking for invest in a slightly higher end watch! So far I'm caught between the amazing Seiko SARB033 and the gorgeous Tissot Visodate. I'm also starting to look into vintage omegas as well which is such fun. Thanks for the great content and for getting me into a new hobby, my friend. Keep up the great work.

    I liked your suggestions for beginners. I appreciate the fact that you know the right watches for different kinds of occasions. In my case, one of the problems of living in Brazil is that you can not use luxury watches for daily life without worrying excessively about security haha ... Personally, I believe that when you start a new hobby you should really get into it from the start. The first wristwatch I bought was an Orient Bambino Version II. I love this watch because first of all it is cheap, hovering at around 125-150$ and also because it is horologically beautiful. It has an in house Japanese movement and an immaculately designed dial (if I may say so myself). I think for a person new to watches, the Orient Bambino series is perfect because it combines horological excellence with simplicity. Bambinos are not haute horology but they are excellent beginner watches.
    Great video as always Tristano!!!

    I would suggest a beginner purchase an Seiko SKX or a Orient Mako. They are amazing watches for the price and you will probably always keep them as your 'first' watch. My first watch was a Breitling but I worked in the luxury watch world and I'm a reformed watch snob, all because of this channel ;) now I love entry level brands.

  • @11696Ron

    I really appreciate the videos about entry level watches because I'm inexperienced and don't like to spend too much money on one thing without knowing everything about it. I'm also interested in knowing about watch maintenance. Like for example, I've heard of watch winders for automatic watches and I'd like to know if it's something that's necessary or if you can just hand wind it everyday and be just fine. And I've heard you talk about getting a watch tuned by a professional and would like to know how often it should be done and who to look for (I live in NYC too). Thanks for the video man, keep them up.

    My recommendation for your first watch, and the recommendation I would give to my self if I could travel back in time, is: understand the difference between quartz and mechanical BEFORE you buy, and then get something mechanical from Japan. Can't beat those watches, and they are the absolute perfect first time piece. And this is specifically to the younger me, some years ago: "Put down that Daniel Wellington, you stupid!" Lol.

    Another great video! I've always loved watches and sunglasses but only recently have I been obsessed with automatics. My to-be mother in law gifted me a new Breitling(something I never would have purchased on my own). Not long after, I bought a used Bond Seamaster (grew up during the Brosnan Bond era and always wanted one). She's created a monster!
    I gifted an Orient Ray II to a friend in hopes that he would get into this hobby as well. Thanks to your videos, it was a tough choice between the SKX or the the Ray II(both of which I'd like to own eventually).
    Regarding straps, they all have their pros and cons but in my short months of experience I feel like the NATO strap has the most Pros. I just bought an oem Breitling leather strap and I've just been afraid to wear it due to summer heat, sweat etc ruining an expensive strap. The Seamaster is getting much more wear with the NATO on it. As you said, water proof, durable etc. and best of all they are cheap to replace. The watch is also significantly lighter overall with the NATO strap, very comfortable.

    My first watch was a piece of garbage michael khors fashion watch 45 mm with gold plating... Quite nasty... Then a wise man told me to throw it in the garbage and don't ever wear anything so nasty again. He gave me a brief lesson on horology that changed my life forever. I threw the POS mk fashion watch in the back of my dresser where it still remains untouched. I then bought a Seiko quartz chronograph similar to the flighty then after discovering your channnel TGV I bought an Oris Aquis. The rest is history lol. Thanks for another great video TGV, by far the best all around watch channel on youtube hands down. Cheers.

    Terrific 101 Video. From my own experience who like others has been collecting for a very long time, be very careful if you're buying used. This is especially true if buying a luxury brand/model you're not too familiar with. It's very easy to get burned, as I did recently. Know the brand. Know the model. And most importantly, know the grey market dealer you're buying off.

    You covered quite a bit, and for the novice you gave them a good place to start. One thing I might have added is that as they progress through the years and many watches they will slowly narrow their focus as they find what suits them the best. As an example of my growth, for most of my life I hated watches over 36 mm. I thought them too big and gaudy. Then as my eyes changed I realized that with a bigger dial I could see the watch better. I used to like the "ministry" style case. I now go for the "round" case. I used to like sapphire crystal, I now prefer acrylic...and the list goes on. That is how we all progress as our hobby grows with us.

    Good vid. My advice to a first time buyer would be seiko every time. I would tell them to leave the mid range Swiss stuff alone to begin with because they are the watches that collectors tend to flip a lot and lose the most money on if purchased from new. Start with seiko then save for a watch you will keep forever ,such as a Rolex or omega for example.

Its a great into for a beginner and will serve any newcomer very well. The only thing I would add is a word about replica/fake watches and the reason why you shouldn't consider one. I'm sure you covered that in an earlier video and had a similar line of thinking to my own, however I'm sure there are beginners out there who have considered a fake as a 'quick win' without really considering it too much.Your videos are a strong part of my interest in horology - I look forward to them every time! Thanks

    For a knockabout watch get a timex weekender and a different NATO strap for every day of the week, swap them out as and when you need to. Also for occasional wear watch with a bit of a formal look buy a Seiko 5, throw the strap away and get a black and brown leather strap depending on shoes/belt you wear. You will be surprised on the compliments you will get for little outlay, also it will establish your preference on where to go when spending a little more. If you decide to start a collection a great foundation is a tool Quartz and an Auto, everyone needs a weekender and a Seiko 5 :-)

    Great video my friend, well done! My additional advice for beginners is to do some research. Learn about the piece or the pieces you're interested in. Try to find it at an authorized dealer where you can try it on and handle it in person. I would recommend a brick and mortar experience with a good dealer because you can learn a ton about watches from the dealer. Most dealers carry multiple brands with different prices, so you can experience a multitude of watches. Buying from your local dealer is safe and you always know you can walk right back in if you ever have an issue with your watch. Thanks and best regards!

    The personal relationship to a mechanical watch is winding the watch every day, setting the time and cleaning it. It is quite similar to caring for a pet or even a child with the suddle differnce that it is dead steel brought to life by the torque you apply.

    What I would suggest is a Seiko 5 if you want an automatic, and a Seiko Solar if you want Quartz.
    Especially the Seiko 5 is a steal, at less than 100€ for a mechanical watch, and they are available in many different styles, from dressy to feature packed, and they are very well made.
    But if you need to keep precise time, the Seiko Solars are fantastic, I actually wear a Seiko Solar everyday (I have three), they are super accurate and virtually maintenance free.

    great tips. when we start and have not much experience the main thing in my opinion the price. start with low price helps you to learn quicker of type of watch is your favorite and grow from there. if you start with a citizen diver and you find out divers are not for you you won't be sorry to replace it for a Bambino which offers for sure a totally different experience. Cheers.

    The first watch I ever had was a Delbana 21 jewels manual wound and It was a gift from my dad. I still have it but it needs service and I have not found a good place to send it. I also own some others such as a Fero Feldmann, Urbita, Royce ,Seiko 5 ,and a Quartz Festina. most of those brands were quite popular here in South America. Now I think I'll buy a nice Mathey Tissot I found in an antique shop.

    I personally would go for a Seiko straight up or an orient. in particular I would recommend a Seiko sarb033 as it is a great looking watch and has great build quality. the Orient Bambino range is also quite nice and cheaper than the sarb033. Citizen eco drives are also quite cool and reasonably priced. personally I would steer clear of quartz watches but that's just me. like I have an vintage Omega seamaster Mariner III which has a quartz movement that despite being serviced on multiple occasions just died. I will have to replace it for about $500 AUD simply because I love the look of the watch. In the end it is up to you but the Craftsmanship of an automatic really sells it for me.

    I started with a Fossil quartz sport 100m water resistant. I have a quick change 22mm Silicone on it. I also have a blue quick change strap on it.
    While on the subject of straps. Make sure your watch has 22mm lugs as I think they look better on most wrists and there's plenty available.
    Then I bought an Orient Bambino Blue V4 and that would be a great combination for a 1st level starter Combo imo

    Very nice quality. I would have benefited from this greatly when I first started in this hobby. As someone already mentioned, stay away from fashion watches purchased at the mall. Great video TGV! My personal tips to maximize enjoyment and minimize disappointment is: 1. Never buy more than you could afford. No point having that grail watch when you worry if you'll get kicked out of your house because you can't pay rent. 2. Get something you personally like, not what your friends are wearing/tell you to wear. Why buy a dress watch if you didn't like it, and all you ever wanted are divers? (Or just watch more TGV's video and you'd want them all) 3. Do not buy it with the intention of attracting attention. Real world isn't like The Urban Gentry's community, they just do not notice what you wear, unless they are watch aficionados as well. Buy it if you like it, not you think that someone else will like it. 4. Buy something that's more than just a watch. When someone finally noticed your watch and ask you about it, you do not want to go "Yeah, got it for $129.90, and.. uh.. yeah.. that's it". Learn about the technical things, company history, series history etc. If there's nothing to learn from it, no conversation to be had, it's no better than reading time from your cellphone.

      You're right TGV :D and I apologize for the wrong use of word, perhaps I should rephrase that. The message I'm trying to deliver is that not everyone out there shares the same passion. I'm trying to decide between a Timex (I don't have a massive budget, and I like the reliability of quartz and the pedigree and designs of Timex), and a Vostok (I like history, their an interesting start for a mechanical watch, and the unique dials are appealing to me). After that, I'd look into either a Dan Henry 1968 chrono or an Orient Bambino probably.

    Hey by the way I wanted to apologize about what I said about the ceramic sub earlier, where I said I hated the thing and found it ugly, as I actually tried one on at my local shopping mall when I went in there looking for a black bay, and for whatever reason they werent carrying them. said they were supposed to but didnt for whatever reason, go figure, so I decided to make the best of it.
    anyways I was surprised at how small it was, it looks to be like 40 mm vs the 44 of the Casio 106 you recommended, and the 106 is almost too big for me really lol like there has gotta be a better inbetween of this and my apparently 35 mm omega lol
    and your wording about the bezel being the nicest one you've tried is certainly true. as I was thoroughly impressed with its feel. and I almost wanted to run out with it truth be told lol
    its just that in the photos it has a tendency to look far bigger than it is, and about the only thing that seemed off in person was that the crown guards are oversized and blocky looking, like someone needs to scalpel them abit to match the curve of the case. as it looks like someone forgot to trim the mold in that spot.
    although the boys at the rolex forums do have customizers who do cut those down or flat out remove them if I really want to go for it latter on.
    and I guess the watch must have seen what I said about it as it turns out the bracelet is far too short for me, as I couldnt get it around my gigantic hand lol and I have like an 8 1/2 inch wrist.
    which makes finding bracelets and watches a right bitch quite frankly lol but I just wanted to tell you in person I found it to not be that bad and I can see why you love the thing honestly, and I'm sorry about ragging on it that much. as seeing that against the black bay just really made me REALLY hate it for whatever reason.
    as seriously in photos the thing looks like a right brick while in person its the complete opposite, outside of the crown guards that is, like maybe the photos need to be pulled back in scale for all these watch places.
    as it drives all us detail people nuts like this, especially if your german and everything has to be perfect lol which is the german way, as we were the only ones in the world in east german that could actually make Communism work lol as yes we're that dedicated to the detail work over in germany that we can find a way of making the most broke ass worthless POS system in the history of mankind actually work lol now lets see a democrat do that lol

    congrats TGV, you did cover the essentials in such a compact nice way. I consider myself a newby yet, and I´m no one to say to others how to get an buy whatever, so I will just tell my story and how I began. First, I read a lot of foruns, reviews etc etc as I could, I watched manny youtube channels, in order to have a lot of different opinions to ultimate made my own opinion. Second I deliberately start with non Swiss big names so I could appreciate other brands and ways of approaching to horology, and to avoid becoming a snob (orient, seiko, citizen, sea-gull) - Oriental watches were covered ;), only then I moved with more confidence to the more known brands. One thing I think I should point out is that an increase of prize does not always reflect on an huge increase in quality and there are amazing quality pieces that are not very expensive (seiko sarb, hamilton khaki etc). One last think: be humble, always willing to learn and don´t be afraid to ask, for example on the facegroup I always found help on any question, the same on some other groups and foruns, like WUS. Remember that a lot of the joy is the ride :)
