You can substitute ‘watch’ with ‘car’, ‘boat’, whatever and your questions are still valid. Excellent video

I like to call the seller. Alot of times you can get a good feeling of who you're buying from that way. If the seller is well informed and knowledgeable specifically about the exact item you're buying that is obviously a positive. Calling is also a good way to find out how responsive a seller is, it's also faster (in theory) than email. Although I would note that to have your questions answered in writing can occasionally be very valuable. I feel these rules are very well laid out and comprehensive. Excellent video. Pure Class

Great points TGV! I also asked these very same questions with my first Omega purchase online. Positive feedback is very helpful. Make sure to read those feedback too, even though generic, it might tell you the shipping, the packaging and if the description of the auction is accurate. When I bought my Omega from a seller, I was pleased to have a response time of a few hours. This told me the seller was invested in making my purchase as pleasant as possible. Great video TGV, as always!

Good tips all. I've had good luck in all my purchases, but this is good info. Buying second hand/grey market luxury watches is the only way I feel I can justify the money spent which means I have to spend more time buying the seller. Having said that, I don't mind a polish done well as I tend to keep my watches rather than flip them. So I guess my only tip is this: never buy on first instinct, always let it go a while. If you still want it, ask all the questions and make up your mind if it's worth it. Some of my favourite pieces are polished (well). I don't mind at all.

All of these questions are perfectly reasonable. But speaking for myself (which is why I don't do vintage watches) it's one thing to ask the question, but entirely another to verify if the answer is truthful. The seller may not even know him/herself. One can ask if the parts are original or genuine, but if the answer is "yes", how do you verify without an in-depth knowledge of that particular watch or model? Not having this experience, I would have to go through a trusted dealer who had the knowledge and experience to vet these things out-- especially if I'm dropping real money on a vintage timepiece.
I think your advice at around 7:15 is the best: Go with a trusted seller. That way if you don't have the experience, or don't want the hassle of going through a dealer/middleman, this is your best bet- especially if they offer guarantees or return policy.

Excellent video! (again) I was about to pull the trigger on a 90's omega seamaster about 2 weeks ago. I asked those same questions and the guy didn't knew squat. As a buyer, the more informations/knowledge you have, the more power to you. Was able to drop 200$ off the price with those questions. He decided to keep the watch. Knowledge=Power. As for everything in life. Thank you again TGV, very informative!

Excellent. I recently made 3 separate Rolex purchases from a dealer I found on Ebay, located in MO. Two had aftermarket (not Rolex) crystals that were not disclosed. Fortunately, the return policy allowed me to return them. I found Ebay accounts for two dealers, oddly sharing the same address. These two dealers are responsible for a high percentage of the Rolex listings on Ebay...a situation that essentially fosters price setting-artificially high prices, designed to give the impression that market prices is higher than reality. I also found that many of these Rolex sellers appear to have large inventories of used Rolex watches, but in reality, they are advertising watches they don't have in inventory, but can acquire from other sources. Don't accept crappy cell phone pics on a long distance deal. Ask for high res images, emailed so they can be viewed on a full size monitor. If they don't comply with this request, they may be hiding defects.

TGV, thank you so much for this wonderfully, insightful advice! I’ve been on the hunt for a particular watch, found it on Chrono24, reached out to the seller with your questions, and was met with an interesting answer. He responded with “It is impossible for me to answer all of those questions. Because of this, I will not sell you this watch.” Not sure if he wasn’t knowledgeable about the time piece or if he was just looking to turn a quick buck on someone? Anyways, I moved along as it didn’t feel right. Thank you again for all of your wonderful content!!

Ciao Tristano! When someone is concentrated on the purchase, could happen that he is so excited that forgets all the important questions to ask (to me happen!! :-]) to avoid disappointments or scams. This is the reason why your video is the guideline to follow step by step, hence...thanks a lot for sharing it!! But for the moment, and for the above mentioned reasons, I'm prefering to buy brand new watches (less then 1 k/eur). This because I have the warranty, the origianl boxes and papers, the return is granted and because...I'm the first to wear it!
PS: another suggestion I have for you all:
If you have doubts, especially for those sellers not present on the most used markets (like ebay, chrono24 and so on) be sure to check online the status of the VAT code on the specific website of the Tax Authority of each country. You can see if the license is active or not (this means that is selling or not), you can see from when it is active and the name of the owner of the VAT code as well. In Italy this is possible through the website of AGENZIA DELLE ENTRATE. Once happened to me that I had doubts (the price was really to low!), and in this way I found that the VAT was not registered (or it has been retrat, I don't remember). I saved money!!
Always be careful because......"fidarsi, è bene. Non fidarsi, è meglio!"

I like to ask if it comes from a "smoke free" or "cat free" home. There is nothing worse than buying something high end and you open the box and it stinks of cigarettes or cats. (this may seem strange, but once it happens to you, you'll never want it to happen again)

Regarding asking how the watch is performing, that is quite significant. And so true, it is incredible how many sellers don't say whether or not the watch is working (if they bother to include a description at all). Even though they say the watch is running, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's keeping good time. Having purchased many used pieces, I've been burned on quite a few.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  8 років тому

Thank you for that Ken, you are not the only one to get burned, but the great thing is, it makes use wiser and smarter at finding a good deal right? Happy future hunting my friend.

I don't mind polishing as long as it is done well and not too often. However, I bought a used GMT Master II where the Rolex logo on the bracelet has almost disappeared. I would recommend that if you are buying an expensive watch do it in person and inspect it thoroughly, I wish I had.

    • @theurbangentry

Always do your homework before you pull the trigger. I couldn't agree more about the better rated sellers, you may end up paying more but as you say they have a reputation to uphold, so they tend to offer a better quality service in general. They usually but not always offer the best examples as well.

TGV you've always been an icon to me when it comes to the watch world. You actually aspired me into collecting watches. That and ever since my father had given me watches as gifts that I've learned to appreciate a good time piece. A unique piece and my favorite out of my entire collection is the Hamilton Khaki Frogman in Titanium. It's one of the older models released a long time ago with the two canteen caps that screw down to keep the crowns safe from any water damage that may occur. I would like to see you do a review on that watch as I feel that it truly is a unique piece with a one of a kind design that many watch collectors may love.

Hi...I think also when buying a watch, don't buy one that is just showing a stock photo, or only one photo of the watch...Also ask for the size of the watch, and length of the bracelet/strap, no good to you if it arrives, and it looks like a pin on your arm, (ask for the diameter!) or doesn't fit, due to it not being long enough, could end up costing you quite a bit for extra links, especially on a high end watch....If the watch bracelet has been altered/shortened, ask if it comes with the links that have been removed!

I think I would have split the question of warranty out of question 3 and put it into a question of it's own, because it's so important. Because you need to know, who is providing the warranty, the seller, the manufacturer (if you were buying nearly new) or a third party. How long is the warranty? How do you claim, who do you contact? Will any paperwork be provided for said warranty?
If the piece is being sold with the balance of it's manufacturer's international warranty, does the watch come with a valid AD stamped and/or activated warranty card? Might be handy to know who the original AD was and when the watch was originally sold new, though this would crossover with question 8 about determining the item's ownership history. Be wary if the watch might have been originally been sold grey.

All great questions. The seller's reputation and the time keeping/performance of the watch are the 2 main ones I rely on. I'm a member of WatchUSeek and I ALWAYS look at their postings and activity on the forums as a guide to how they'll be to deal with. While not specifically a question I do value those that contribute to the forums and feel they're going to be better sellers/buyers than those that don't contribute at all. Of course, there's always exceptions to all of these points but they are good general rules to go by. I've yet to have problems buying and selling from fellow forumites and like minded enthusiasts. Ciao, John

I would add to inquire if you are buying online, the method of payment the seller accepts. If you are buying out of country or out of state, many will be wire only, some will be PayPal. If wire only, sometimes you can get a better price, however, be sure as TGV says, that the seller has many positive references, and or preferably the seller is an established reputable grey market online dealer as you have zero protection with wire payments if the watch is not as represented in the add. PayPal, there is protection for the buyer however, you will have to file a complaint and undergo a process there.

Bought a "vintage luxury watch" on ebay one week ago. Hour/Minute hand had been replaced, dail was cleaned, case highly polished and the back was glued. You count tell from the pictures. I returnted it and hopefully I will get my money back...

I avoid eBay like the plague for watches for this very reason. Also, there are a large amount of scammers on eBay selling replica watches while stating they are authentic. The one good thing is that eBay does have buyer protection, so as long as you document everything carefully, you should get your money back!

great video with lots of great tips. I must confess that I hesitate buying second hand. Some of the pieces I like don't come with box or papers or even both.I can't understand how this is possible coming from trusted dealers (chrono 24) that sometimes are jewelers in their own countries. I guess that for brands like Omega or Rolex you can send the piece to Switzerland and get it serviced and obtain a warranty of the repair and a box. However you'll spend a lot of cash buying a "birth certificate to your piece".

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  8 років тому

Very true. Well, form ym own experience I have sold watches without the box or papers imply because I left them in other countries I had lived in and they simply were too costly or large to bring with me, that's is just me.
Once your confidence and experience grows, so will your daring. However, box and papers always will be preferable
Thank you, always enjoy your feedback.
      Best regards,
      TGV

    Hi TGV,
Thank you for this helpful video. It could really help when I'm in a rush again to make a seemingly bargain! ;) But sometimes you have to take a risk. I bought my vintage Atlantic Worldmaster marked as "defect". It was obvious the seller has absolutely no experience with watches. He even put on the strap the wrong way. But from his description and the photos he provides, I was sure I could take the risk.
    Best regards,

    Excellent and very helpful video
When buying from a private seller, Is it ok to ask for serial number, to do your own research? Asking for extra photos, or even taking yours in order to doublecheck i guess sounds fine.
I am interested to buy a Longines watch, as far as I already checked, Longines gives for free an "Extract from Archives", an official Longines paper in English about any of their masterpieces. This is not an authenticity paper (you have to pay for it) but at least it's for free. You only need to provide them the serial number and high quality photographs. Could the excistence (or not) of this paper provide some kind of information about the seller.
For what "innocent" reason someone who claims to own an original piece, doesn't provide a "zero cost" paper like that?

Last time I used them it was all fine, but this time I'm thinking of spending up to & including $700!! Hamiliton Pioneer & Oris Moonphase. Reviews are a mixed bag TBH, so I just wanted your opinion on the subject? Or is Chrono24 the go to place now? Cheers! All the best. BMJ ENGLAND! ✌🏻️
