An overwhelming number of those smart watches are being worn by people who wouldn't have even worn a digital watch let alone a quartz analogue and most likely had absolutely no idea mechanical and automatic pieces even existed anymore.
Do you have a stat to back that up? Because if it's anecdotal, it can go both ways. I went from wearing a traditional watch 100% of the time to maybe 10%. Smartwatches are becoming more and more ubiquitous even in professional settings.
I have no desire to own a smartwatch. I am connected enough with my cell phone. I love traditional time pieces. I love watches, be they automatic, quartz, or solar. But to me, a smartwatch is a wrist phone. It is not something that fills any kind of need in my life. Moreover, they demonstrate no artistic diversity or craftsmanship. In short, they bore me.
@@theurbangentryI can tell you what brought me into it a few years ago. Bought the new Apple Watch Ultra for $900 and thought that was a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch. Was talking to a friend and he brought up how that Ultra would be old news in a few years with subsequent iterations. Got me thinking on the timelessness of mechanical watches that are cared for.

Amen brother... Casio does what it needs to do. Basic watches that are reliable, understated and with somehow an urban citizen image. Excellent tool watches, and great for a minimal, no fuss everyday person.
Wearing the GBD200 as I watch this. Out of all my watches, it is by far the one I have worn most. It weighs nothing, is comfortable, very legible, does not require charging, and gives me all the activity data I want from a sports watch. They really knocked it out of the park with this one. It's not the classiest watch, but I have others if I need to suit up. Great video as always, I hope you're enjoying the move to NY!
I want SO BADLY to love Bulova. I've had about 6, and they never seem to last in my collection. Some of them have died due to failed water resistance, some of them just bored me and got sold, and a few were genuine lookers but didn't exactly match my sensibility. I think they're really *close* to shedding that "mall watch" status, and they've improved tremendously. Still, the MSRPs are high-larious if you consider the value proposition they are offering versus the competition. Asking $400+ for a "military field watch" that has 30m water resistance and a Miyota 8 series movement? Yiikesss. There's a sucker born every minute, and they go to the mall all the time IYKWIM.
It's not about "needing acess". There's a lot of things we don't need but it's nice to have access to. A smart watch can literally save your life. It can also alert you to a medical condition you're not yet aware of. It call also automatically call emergency services after an accident. A smart watch offers so much more than telling time and viewing and text.
@@USMCPFC1i get your point totally and I do agree with you. But I'll still never own one, unless G-Shock releases one. I liked the hybrid Citizen smartwatches, but I still can't get into them. But I'm someone who basically abandoned ALL social media AND I don't use my phone very much, so that would be like sticking a small phone on my wrist. I'm just glad to see anyone wearing a watch to be 100% honest. The people who say "i can just check my phone" drive me bonkers personally 🤣 My dad gets a new FitBit every couple of years and I've been pushing him to get one of the new G-Shock's that got released in April (don't remember the model number, but it tracks steps and stuff), and it'd be the last watch he EVER needs (he's 77). What i don't get about tracking steps for older people is, what happens when you don't meet your daily goal? NOTHING. And if you've owned one for awhile, you already know about how many steps you do daily. So why keep tracking them at all? It's not like my dad is going to leave the house at 11pm to go walk the neighborhood just because he didn't meet his daily step goal 😂✌️
Especially when Garmins are the better work out watches. Also what is wrong with counting your pulse manually, recognising the signs of a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure etc.
I started collecting around 2008. As my watchbox has consolidated and individual pieces have grown much more expensive, what hasn't changed is the cheap G-Shock 5610 that I use to set my other watches, to accompany me to the gym, and to wear whenever the neighborhood feels sketchy. It is a true tool. In all honesty, it's the only watch I've ever owned that isn't a piece of jewelry.

Love both G-Shock and Bulova! Smart watches are disposable soulless extensions of an equally disposable phone! I have acquired several G-shocks over the years starting with my G-lide 11 years ago. My Bulova was inherited from my late father , it was the last watch he ever wore- priceless to me ❤️
I really these videos. The narration and storytelling are an absolute delight for the eyes and the ears and the heart. Nothing like enjoying some watch content created by a fellow hard core enthusiast.
Those watches do represent, two sides of modern watches, the Casio smart without being obnoxious to use and the Bulova is one of those rare watches that combines looks and accuracy without costing an arm a leg, if anything they represent a quiet but change that is happening at the entry level, great episode as always!
You have no idea how I appreciate your videos, insights and style of delivering your points, which are often thought provoking. Culture that shaped you is unseen to me, (i m yet to meet a person who is watch collecting, or is in to brand history and etc.) so i treasure your videos of this foreign, yet, close to heart culture, style, way of living and enjoying life, and I take away much more than love for waches. Hey TGV, I recently have become a watch enthusiast after getting my LL Bean Hamilton Mil Spec ref. 921980 serviced. It had sat in a drawer for 40 years. I had found it on a ski mountain when I was a kid one summer day. I really enjoy your channel and have been watching your archive. Thank you for all of your great videos and advice for watch lovers all over the world. Cheers!!
Love that smooth sweeping seconds hand. I struggle with analogue quartz watches, because the *tick tick* seconds always make me think of schoolroom or work clocks, that seem never to move as fast as you think they should.
I hadn't thought about it, but the closest friend I have to a fellow watch nerd wears a Bulova, and I'm thinking of getting him a G-shock because he thinks his job is too rough to wear a watch at work. And my only watch that any other friend has shown an interest in is my Bulova Hack, when I explained its history, and that it never needs a battery or charge lol. You're really onto something here.
I believe that quartz watches will ironically be the only hope for the industry to compete. Modern cheap mechanical watches are more fussy to deal with for the average person. They run out of power in 2 days, they are less accurate, more fragile, more expensive to service, and ultimately just as disposable as quartz if not more, as the movements are often simply discarded and fully replaced. Quartz watches are the least fussy and most accurate, and with solar and atomic/radio options they are even more useful. If big brands produce better and more quartz options, more people will want to buy them. The affordable mechanical fad needs to fade a little and let quartz take over. Imagine how awesome a Prospex solar quartz SKX or Turtle would be.
Automatics are timeless watches, its the entire point of them even existing... what are you saying? come on man, definitely not a luxury watch snob here, love, Casio for example, but Automatic watches will forever be a timeless piece of magic.
@@gusdx3654 The thing is, if you, one day wish to pass that down to your son or daughter, you won't be able to, thing that you'll be able to with an automatic.
I'm impressed with what I've seen with the precisionist movement, and the Jetstar in gold is next on my list. I was able to try one on in person and really blown away. I think for those who cannot afford the $1500 and up automatic watch, the precisionist movement gives us a reliable, precise, lower cost option that won't need pricy servicing.
Love the video! And I love these Bulova modern adapations of their back catalogue, I own one the limited editions tart deco style 'Joseph Bulova' Breton but I couldn´t find this newer SuperSeville anywhere lol not even at the Bulova boutique store at my mall
Bulova has been killing it recently! I'm dying for a precisionist and for a Devil Diver GMT. Great video as always, TGV. I've been wearing to death my GBD-200, so many great fuctions. Not having to 'charge' the watch is the absolute best. For me, having a good fitness tracker and a good collection of 'normal' watches is the perfect combination. Onwards and upwards!
Great video, I have several g-shock watches, including this gbd-200. It was a time when I was wearing smartwatches, but after a while, all the notifications, and indications were annoying. I was slowly disabling all the functions until I realized that I don't need a smartwatch anymore. Casio and citizen are my favorite brands. But casio is starting to follow this connected watch trend, via Bluetooth. You even have to charge your watch with a cable. But to be sure this year I bought the GW 9500 mudman and the GW-5000U square g-shock. I also have the citizen promaster skyhawk blue angels edition. I don't need smartwatches anymore.
Great to see you back on the block in the N-Y-C. That Gshock is something else and a step in the right direction. As for Bulova, hoping they release their "Royal Oak" model from back in the day and that a mysterious journal turns up for auction from Genta's storage unit. "Pitched my new watch idea to Bulova today they said they'll think about it. Oh well, guess I'll go to AP tomorrow and see what they think."
Invasion of the Body Snatchers gave me nightmares as a child. I still give my parents a hard time for letting me watch it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Back to therapy.
It is one of the best crafted phycological horror movies ever made. Your parents, as much as they may have been wrong show you it before you were ready, at least they had great taste in cinema! Thank you, Best regards TGV
What an awesome video! I think you’re spot on with Bulova and G-Shock making an excellent two watch collection. Here’s hoping that Bulova is listening with regard to the water resistance and the bracelet upgrades you mentioned. Their Precisionist movement is fascinating and I hope they will continue to add it to more of their offerings. G-Shock has always been a solid choice and I like the model you featured. It’s great to see you’re back in NYC and I must say this video definitely feels like the videos of years ago. I love it! I think the Rolex Explorer should remain in your collection. It’s just so versatile and with the strap choices you’ve paired with it through the years, it continues to look amazing and suitable to whatever daily missions you assign it. It’s always a pleasure to view one of your videos. Thank you for all the effort you put into making them. I have grown so much in my watch collecting journey by watching them. Ever appreciative! 🥃
I'm beyond excited to see videos from central park again, T! I alao absolutely love what both Casio and Bulova have been doing lately. I feel that Citizen has been quietly knocking it out of the park both through their subsidiaries (Bulova & FC) as well as on their own with the Tsuyosa and other new mechanical models.
TGV, it speaks to your ability as an informative entertainer in that I enjoy videos of watches even when I believe the watches lack a combination of heritage, quality, and overall sex appeal. You are the reason I got a DW5600, which is fantastic!
Wonderful editing, glad to see the move is going well! I would love to see a g-shock square with the new style display that doesn't have light hotspot issues or a bunch of sensors protruding out the back. Give it a full metal core and screw on case back and that would be my favourite beater!
TGV, the Urban Explorer does it again! Taking us on an adventure, where no watch enthusiast has gone before! Shining a light on the bigger picture of horology and the watch industry at large. It'll be interesting to see how the next ten years pans out. Onwards and upwards!
@Theurbangentry ..have you or anyone else every done a video of wTches with the crown at positions other than 3 o'clock? I have a timex with the crown at 6 and an integrated bracket which is nla. Keep up the fine videos.
Hi great video bravo 👏🏻👏🏻 thank you for bringing us Joy and happiness to the watch family. Can I ask if you can do a review on a great value of a watch and is also JDM Seiko SARV003 and SARV001 before the prices go up
Bravo! Humorous, entertaining, eminently educational and wonderful tour of the “ Big Apple “ Thanks TVG. Hopefully Bulova will dig into their historical catalogue and bring us something special in the 40 mm range with decent water resistance and that great Precisionist movement..would buy in a heartbeat. Cheers from Nova Scotia..MikeR.
I've got a Bulova jetstar with the same high frequency quartz movement, and I'm so impressed with it. 8 months-in from acquisition and setting the time, it's currently just 1 second out. At its worst, it was 3 seconds out for a short while. Better than a Grand Seiko quartz movement, for a 10th of the price? Plus it has that spring drive-esque sweeping seconds hand, unlike the GS quartz movements.
Hi TGV, another excellent video!!! I was wondering what would be the “pure classy” dress watch to wear “suited & booted”, a cartier tank must, an IWC portugieser, or a Junghans max bill automatic? Or something else? I wear a white gold ring, so I was going to go with a steel case. Thanks!
I stopped using smartwatches and the disconnect feels great for the mental health, I highly doubt that I'll ever go back. Rocking a GWM-5610U right now.
All it takes is a hand me down to kindle the love for watches, I had watches as a kid, mostly cheap digital Casio's but there was that day I was dressing for a job interview, a part timer while I was at college at this time my Granddad was staying with us for a while, as I was adjusting my tie he spotted my grotty old Casio "You are not wearing that are you?" I hadn't worn a watch in about a year and it was all I had. He promptly went to his room and came out with a very shiny Gold Tissot Seastar Seven that he had had since the late 60s. It felt like the cherry on the cake from feeling average to a million bucks. It even became a talking point during the interview. I often wondered if my first impression would have been damaged, if I wore that old, dirty, cracked screen Casio (F-87w I think) with the strap a few moments away from ripping that I had for about 10 years.
Thank you, I've been telling this to my friends in the last year or two. Also Timex is getting better and better. I just bought a Bulova CURV for cheap in a sale because why not and it became my daily because it is the most comfortable watch I've ever own.👌🏻 My new grail is an Accutron Spaceview. Keep up the good work!
@@EvilTwinRC51niche??? Apple sold $ 40 billion in smartwatches last year. And that was a drop from 2022. That's still more than half of the ENTIRE wrist watch industry. If that's niche, traditional watches will be long gone when smartwatches become really popular.
I bought a Bulova devil diver about a year back and I love it (I know some people knock the movement but..) and I own quite a few G-Shocks (mostly squares) which I also love.
I've got a little G-shock display in a cabinet. Love my 3 G-shocks so much i even added 2 ridiculously expensive G-shock men ('G-men') to complement them.
Thank you Mr TGV for yet another great video. I have 6 different G-lide/G-squads and also a Bulova Aerojet and Hack (which is one of my favourite watches) in my obese collection. They are fantastic and the Bulova's are definitely underrated 👍
If the bulova precision has that smooth sweep as the grand seiko while being even more accurate than a spring drive movement at a fraction of the cost, what’s the point of a spring drive? I have both a spring drive and a bulova lunar pilot so it’s an honest question.
Great video! As someone who’ll probably never be able realistically own a Speedy, Bulova has been on my radar with the Lunar Pilot. Sure it’s quartz and not mechanical but the design is there as is the heritage.
can you use this G shock to track bicycle rides? like actual distance and speed and elevation and stuff? if not this G shock, then which one would have a bicycle tracking function? thanks if anyone can answer this!
Today my G-Shock AWG-M100S-7AJF arrived from Japan! My Fathers' Day gift to myself. I have owned a GW-330A for about 15 or 16 years (and other than the light not working, is still a great watch). Before that I had a Casio that was a combo analog/digital watch (not a G-Shock however). My new watch has everything I could want from a Casio (except the lack of a sweep second hand)! G-Shock? Check! Multiband 6 WaveCeptor? Check! Tough Solar? Check! Love the analog/digital combo and the white dial is so elegant. I am an old guy and will never own a 'smart watch' (just got a smart phone last year to replace my flip phone). Thank you for all of your great reviews! Can hardly wait for the new studio to be ready!

Im going to look into Bulova now, thanks.
Brilliant content as always. John. Oh, love the walking in new york.
Thank you,
Best regards
TGV
Have you actually reviewed the Super Seville watches? I'm looking at the stainless with silver/white dial, but havent found any good reviews.
Great video as usual. The editing is better than most UA-camrs take time to produce.
TGV, it speaks to your ability as an informative entertainer in that I enjoy videos of watches even when I believe the watches lack a combination of heritage, quality, and overall sex appeal. You are the reason I got a DW5600, which is fantastic!
Great video TGV! You haven’t come up in my feed lately. It’s good to see one of your videos again!
Wonderful editing, glad to see the move is going well! I would love to see a g-shock square with the new style display that doesn't have light hotspot issues or a bunch of sensors protruding out the back. Give it a full metal core and screw on case back and that would be my favourite beater!
Casio and Bulova have two things in common. They always bring completely fresh designs and their watches are affordable. Especially for the brookies.
Good day, Sir TGV! Thanks for the great job you’re doing! Have an amazing week ahead!👍👍👍
Thank you so much, have a great week too. Onwards and ever upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
This video made me a subscriber ... a very informative video, I like the comedy thrown in ... Its refreshing!!!
TGV, the Urban Explorer does it again! Taking us on an adventure, where no watch enthusiast has gone before! Shining a light on the bigger picture of horology and the watch industry at large. It'll be interesting to see how the next ten years pans out. Onwards and upwards!
Was literally checking out some Bulova watches earlier today and was pleasantly surprised how budget friendly they were.
@Theurbangentry ..have you or anyone else every done a video of wTches with the crown at positions other than 3 o'clock? I have a timex with the crown at 6 and an integrated bracket which is nla. Keep up the fine videos.
Any clue when the Bulova will regularly be available in Europe? It is not mentioned by a single word on the website as per now. 😞
I just bought the Super Seville in gold. I love it and the sweeping movement is a chef's kiss.
Me too. Almost 10’years of wearing smartwatches and got tired of so many screens around me.
Welcome to New York. If I see you I gotta say hi and shake ur hand. Been following for years
How you like the nivia? Is it a keeper. Looking for a GADA that wear scratches proud?
Good segment....congrats on moving back to my home turf. Onwards and upwards.
Anyone know the ref number of the "original" bulova seville he shows at the end?
Good quality video as always! Enjoy the deep dive and thoughtful analysis! Thank you!
Thank you, I've been telling this to my friends in the last year or two.
Also Timex is getting better and better.
I just bought a Bulova CURV for cheap in a sale because why not and it became my daily because it is the most comfortable watch I've ever own.👌🏻
My new grail is an Accutron Spaceview.
Keep up the good work!
Love your commentary and monologue quality
This video is a work of art! Congratulations!
Good evwning TGV! It's great to see Bulova offering a wider range of attractive offerings and not just relying on the Lunar Pilot. Best regards, Heiko
Your whole vibe reminds me of John Galliano, from your voice to your exceedingly fine taste. Great content, sir.
Really interesting and thought provoking video
Sorry, could you tell me again what strap you have on your Explorer 1?
I think some underestimate the impact the smartwatch has had on the watchmarket. Will be interesting to see which brands stand the test of time.
I think if they had at least a weeks battery life they would be a bigger draw. Until then it’s still niche
Please..
which watch is better?
what do you recommend between Tissot leLocle ( not powermatic) automatic ladies and Seiko Presage Zen Lady?
Thank you!
I ordered in a Lunar Pilot last week and am very happy with it. That movement is neat and is the first quartz I’ve bought in many years.
ohhhh i've never seen a fluted bezel on a rectangle watch... love the Bulova blue!
I just bought this g-shock as well, i was going to go for the dw-h5600 because of the hr monitor but didn't want any of the other smartwatch bloat
If the bulova precision has that smooth sweep as the grand seiko while being even more accurate than a spring drive movement at a fraction of the cost, what’s the point of a spring drive? I have both a spring drive and a bulova lunar pilot so it’s an honest question.
Like the Central Park war room. Gives variety to the videos. 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
Great video! As someone who’ll probably never be able realistically own a Speedy, Bulova has been on my radar with the Lunar Pilot. Sure it’s quartz and not mechanical but the design is there as is the heritage.
Yup. Got a Lunar Pilot, a GShock GW5000 and DW5610. Love them.
16:47 what do u think he has on his wrist?
can you use this G shock to track bicycle rides? like actual distance and speed and elevation and stuff? if not this G shock, then which one would have a bicycle tracking function? thanks if anyone can answer this!
Keep it up! Btw the shades are marvelous 😎👌 what brand are they mate
Original Gentry vibes, and very thoughtful as always. Welcome back!
That Explorer is still Fab. Enjoyed your show. Thank you for the insight and entertainment
Another cracking video by the OG 👌🏽
Totally offtopic question: What is the exact model/manufacturer of Hugo Mountbatten?
I like how you mixed the intro sound. Great!
I've been looking forward to this one! I love the direction Bulova are going, seems like they have the enthusiast in mind.
Agreed
Love this! Thanks for the Bullova info.
@ 7:17 that's a bit early for the date change to start isn't it?
I'm thinking of getting you a t shirt with a prx on it with the logo, this watch is living rent free in my head 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Charlie Brooker screen wipe !!! What a show
Always loved it every year. They continued it on netflix but not the same without Charlie's humour.
I wonder when the bulova will be available in the UK? Can't seem to find it anywhere.
Great vid by the way and hope the move goes well TGV.😊
Why can't I find these Bulovas on their website?
