I’m 57, retired military, and I spent most of my life with affordable G-shocks for work.
I have always admired mechanical watches and horology in general but I figured I’d never have the means for a really good mechanical watch. (and not really knowing enough to “choose a good one”.)
I discovered your channel a few months back and have been “devouring” (nod to Hugo) the past ten years worth of knowledge and experience that you have been sharing on your channel.
I recently bought my first automatic watch (a modest Hamilton Murph 38mm) and now I have my sights set on soooo many different and amazing pieces.
I’m living proof that you’re never too old to learn and to pursue those things in life that bring you joy.
    Thank you, TGV.
How fortunate are we that you saw fit to share your passion with the rest of us?
We can’t wait to see what comes next!
    Onwards and upwards.

You are one of the most influential people of the watch community.
Your informative videos reached millions of people and you showed brands that the world didn’t even know exist.
    All that while being yourself.
I thank you, because if it wasn’t for you I don’t think I would know half of the things I do now.
Although this is my first comment , I have been here since the days you used to make coffee on the moka pot and the tissot was always on the intro.
    You know which one 😉.
Your videos helped me at tough times when I couldn’t relax.

TGV has been pivotal to my enjoyment of watches. I’ve learned so much from him about the watches and other topics. A watch for me has to have heritage and story as much as good looks and functionality. It’s not all about the price and status of luxury brands. If you ask me my gold Casio I was wearing during my child’s birth in which their mother hates because “it makes me look like an old man” is priceless. It also looks awesome with an all black track suit.

TGV, I wanted to thank you for getting me into watches. Watching this video made me realized that we as an audience have grown with you and are all the better for it. Just like old good friends, the frequency of meeting is sparse but treasured more when time allows. We've all matured into true gentlemen now rather than chasers of FOMO.
I've been on multiple hobbies and just like you, I've grown fed up of hype culture and have begun also to carve my own way through all my hobbies in filtering the pieces that make me struggle to the pieces that make me excited to keep using. I have fully assumed my taste and embraced its difference from others, as it should.
While I understand the direction you're looking to explore in this "new era", I already feel you've been doing it for the past year. This video just confirms such vibe :)

I remember finding you a number of years ago when I was given a watch and decided to buy my first couple, which at the time of my limited budget, was Invicta.
I would watch your videos to learn the history, the best bang-for-buck watches and just to listen to you and learn from you.
These days I have a watch box of Citizen, Casio, Hamilton, Cartier, (boy, a lot of C's) and a bunch stored away... I'm very proud of where you've come now with your career, designing watches. I'd love to pick one up that you've had something to do with. Happy to hear you shifting things around and going onto a new chapter.
    Cheers TGV

Tristano, you are a class act - no one holds a candle to you as your videos are never boring. The effort you make to add the history of the time period allied to the watch/brand is par excellence as it is never just about the watch. All is in context. Love all the movie references too! I am sure whatever the future holds for you & this channel will be a success. Can't wait!

I always get nervous when a channel announces a "new era", or a new beginning or direction. I've seen many lose what made them great in the first place in the pursuit of more views or more lucrative pursuits. However, I've been watching your videos regularly for the last year or so (and going back to some of your older ones), and I've always been struck by your integrity, whether it's in regards to not allowing sponsored content, or not double-dipping as a watch dealer. Your passion for watches (whether vintage luxury or a simple Casio) shines through in everything you do, so I'm confident The Urban Gentry will retain its unique charm and character. Onwards and upwards to another ten years!

Congratulations to the 10th anniversary! A bit of change is often a good thing and I guess many of us gentry appreciate the mixture of watch content, history, art, technology and philosophy. I was able to reconstruct that I watched my first video of yours (when researching entry-level Seikos) in October or November 2017. It has been an awesome journey so far. And no matter what the future brings, one thing is for sure: Onwards & upwards!

Funnily I found your channel while looking for videos about the Seiko Flightmaster, I guess you became "The Flightmaster Guy", whether you wanted to or not. I finally got my own and it's one of my fave watches, it's an older model from 1992 with a date subdial instead of window, green chrono seconds hand and tapering bracelet. 7:12 This can not be emphasized enough.
What makes UA-cam so special is it's ability to build good and pleasant communities of people interested in the subject.
The platform serves as a great entryway in to the deeper layers of the dark forest which the modern internet has become.
Though I am using that metaphor based on a single video, eventually I will read the source book for context, like I did with 1984.
In return, thank you for the amazing and welcoming content you put out.
It's unique even to this platform and continues to be fun to follow even as my interest are drifting to other things.
Looking forward to your future content and interesting takes on various trends.
Perhaps I should finally make my own and make a viewer collection showcase, featured or not it would be fun to make.

Well said. There are some big Watch UA-camrs who review watches provided by the company whose watch they are reviewing, and I always think to myself " How can I trust this review now?". I also think Hodinkee have become obsessed with celebrity and never make a negative comment about Rolex for example. God forbid Ben Clymer doesn't get allocated the new Daytona.

I'm in my twenties and never imagined I'd be into watches but you "converted" me, so to speak, mainly due to your sincere passion towards watchmaking, almost as a kid discovering this fantastical world for the first time, if you get what I'm saying. I truly believe that makes you unique. I imagine I speak for a lot of us when I say you're a true man of people/gentleman and will always wish well in all your future endeavors, please be safe and remain happy and unwavering. Lastly, on the topic you displayed about smartwatches "extinguishing" entry level traditional watches, what dark days those will be if it comes to pass: I can't afford luxury watches but I still very much enjoy the hobby and there's awesome stuff out there that doesn't cost a limb; it shouldn't just be Rolex or bust. Cheers and here's to another 10 incredible years!
