- #firewood This pile of cottonwood logs has been staring at us for almost a full year and now it is time to rid ourselves of this nasty crap! It will be use for boiler wood by a friend who will burn any kind of wood. In exchange he lets us use his dump trailer. It is a great trade for all of us! It is time to make big wood small, lets get splitting!

Grampa told me that in the old days the women liked a little dry cottonwood for baking during the hot summer because it burned pretty hot and went out quick so not to heat up the house too much. Wood burning cook stoves in those days!

We have a lot of cotton wood along the Little Missouri River where I live. We rarely ever cut or split it "green" there is enough dead and dry stuff. However, you must cut and split a lot of that rather quickly after it dies or it becomes punky and rotten. (in a year or to, but dead standing lasts longer)
Yup, it is not great firewood but it does burn.

This is exactly what our country needs the older guys teaching our kids responsibility. I hung around with mostly older guys who really taught me more than school. They taught me how to use my brain and hands and my life worked out well without a college degree!

With the equipment and layout of your facility one to three workers seems very uniformly efficient you have done a great job in building/designing and equiping your operation so that it's effcient thru at least a 300% staffing level. Ive been selling bundled cottonwood to campgrounds for a little over 20 years now. Popular and cotton they love it. Burns for a couple hours and its about out. Just gotta keep it out of the rain it will soak up water. Im guessing i got 60 to 80 cords of it laying here for ya when your bored Chris.. lol

Built my wood bin yesterday and it works great but the .017 gauge fencing wire broke a few times after hitting it with a few pieces of heavier wood and one thing I learned is to add the wire cross lengths as you go and not put it all together because the wood bounces off all the wires. I went (due to space constraints) 4 pallets wide and 5 deep but I figure I can get roughly 7-8 cords in it. Today is "Bert Tray" day. Slowly but surely my yard is getting cleaned up.

Cotton woods not that bad. When you got it and pine to chose from. It heated my house for lots years. Only restart my fire when clean ashes out.

Best width, best length, still relatively manuverable .
The only minor advantage that
the brand new ,shiny dedicated split firewood elevators might posess is tha some of them move themselves , some have a drive teain to relocate them around the storage area or un to the barn.
But
They are all five times the price.

I have a Timberwolf splitter and it has one of those plates on both sides of the ram. I have to tighten them after every hard use.

Actually "dry" seasoned solid cotton wood burns well, it takes more 'cause it burns FAST.......it splits easier too. (similar to pine) but the smoke smell is somewhat unpleasant even when it is dry...

Did you say that that cottonwood was stinky. Because I got 4 cords of mixed wood delivered last February. There was this one log I cut up that smelled bad. I wish I knew what it was. It was spindley with twisted bark on it and raised up. It also had a few vines wrapped around it. The only thing I can think of is swamp maple mabe. I'm guessing. Maybe you might know or somebody else?
If it smelt like horse crap, it was probably cottonwood.
It definitely did smell like horse 🐎 dung. But I'm not sure. This bark was similar to that one video you had cutting up cottonwood. But also I have about 10 trees mixed in my wooded plot. These cottonwoods actually drop some chunks of cotton. But the bark is smooth and milky just like I read and saw before somewhere on the net. But I think they may be called aspens to. The biggest one is about 40 feet high and about about 18 inches wide. Theres about 20 of them all around the same area. Their tall with various diameters . But it seems like there's a bunch of small ones all around the big ones this year. I guess they decided to have a bunch of kids all the sudden. There is this cute flying squirrel that's living in a birdhouse about 6 feet up on a cherry 🍒 tree. One day I opened up the hinged door of the birdhouse and all these sticks and cotton fell out along with the flying squirrel. He was running around in circles making me laugh. He went up the tree and I was able to get a good picture. That's how I know. All right I'm talking to much and keep on Cutting wood. From Phil
i'm getting alot of tree trimmers wood cut in 28" or 30" lengths i need a machine to reduce this wood to 20" or 16" lengths for my wood splitter, that i can load with my tractor. but dont know where or who to see about a machine

Alder,maple,Doug Fir,Spruce. The best is Madrona but that only grows near saltwater and can be hard to get

Heavy barked wet green stringy wood that dries out with very little BTU's below Popple/Poplar/Aspen with a putrid smell that comes back again when being burned, about the only good things about it is it can usually be had for free because no one wants it and it does burn.

Cottonwood is one of the softest hardwoods. It's ashy and burns fast, but when it's free and it's all you have, it'll keep a house warm in winter.
That cotton wood reminds me of Poplar, that's not the best either🤔

You have great operation going on, but placing fresh saw dust around new plants is a recipe for disaster. As the saw dust starts to degrade, it will deplete the soil of nutrients namely nitrogen and could at minimum degrade new plants, at the worst the plants will be starved of nutrients and die . The best thing to do is to compost it first. Find a source for animal manure and mix them together for at least 6 months. This is in response to previous video. You could do this with all of the wood chips and wood waste that has collected in the yard which appears to be substantial.
We did add fertilizer around the plants twice. They are doing fine.
Sawdust as mulch barely impacts soil N. Tilling it in will create nitrogen lockup, but only about 5 lb/acre at an application rate of 2 ton/acre.
