  • In this episode we will show you how to upgrade or replace your dewalt string trimmer head.
    The original head that comes with the dewalt string trimmer is ok, works ok, but loading line in the head is a pain. The newer trimmers comes with better heads, which look like a copy of the Speedfeed head, like an Echo Speedfeed 400. But, the those of us who have older dewalt string trimmers were not as lucky.
    So Upgrade your head with the Husqvarna T35 bump feed head which seems to be great match for the DeWalt string trimmers. To my knowledge this process will work on all current (july 2019) DeWalt string trimmers in production 20v 40v and 60v. Thank you for saving my day!! I deliberately avoid trimming my lawn because my DeWalt 40v trimmer keeps eating string. This new head from Echo (which you referenced) has made my lawn trimming a less stressful task.

    Thanks for the video. I will upgrade the weed-eater head (that's what I call it too) on my 20 Volt model to save major headaches restringing the original one. I stopped using it because I could never get it right. Just seemed to tangle up inside.

    Thank you for your video. I purchased the Echo Speed Feed from Amazon for my own Christmas present!. Most of the reviews posted stated you could NOT use the Speed Feed with a DeWalt 20v trimmer. I searched the Echo website and could not find the DeWalt brand listed so I was ready to return it and go back the original OEM head. Then I came across your video and saw you contracted those reviews so I gave it a try. Wow, the entire process took no more than 10 minutes. It worked!

    I did this with my DeWalt 20v string trimmer and have never looked toward putting that original one back on in the least. They work great and are so much easier to fool with than the DeWalt head was. They are also a heck of a lot cheaper on the wallet to purchase, too, besides having actual spare caps which can be ordered, as well, unlike the DeWalt original head.

Then I will probably get the one your suggested in your video. But you definitely make it very clear how to take the old one off. The manual was terrible for those instructions. no better head on the market. my t35 is still problem free after 12+ years. Also put string on by locating middle & hooking loop in center notch in spool then wind both top & bottom in direction of arrow shown on spools edge. dont wind each line seperately like some vids show, thats wrong and slower too. excellent head!! Dont forget to grease the gearbox and cable inside the shaft on your trimmer too. most take NLGI "0" grade. I buy Chevron big tube its cheaper than OEM little tubes.

    Have a 20v weed trimmer like yours, would you recommend this head over the the quick reel that Dewalt offers now?? Amazon has the quick reel for $115 seems pricey that's Canadian. Was hoping the one you showed was a quick reel or does Husqvarna offer such a unit??

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  4 роки тому +2

      Anthony Macneil the Husqvarna head you still have to wind the line around the string holder. It is much easier than most people think or are afraid of. I would prefer this Husqvarna head over the speed feed head, as it seems more durable and better built. The t35 head and the echo speed feed heads are widely used by professionals landscapers in my area. Yeah $115 is a bit too pricey for a head replacement.

      I can't say for sure, since i don't have it, but it looks like it would. You should get a head that is as close to your OEM head as possible. I would think the smaller one would be better since 20v is less powered than the flexvolt trimmer. It will allow for higher head speed and quicker ramp up!

    I just bought the Dewalt 20V 14” trimmer about a month ago. The string isn’t to hard to load, but trying to get it to come out by hand is another thing. I’ve had three spool cap covers break in this short amount of time. They only sale the spool and not the cap cover which is BS. Then the rubber on my handle is already breaking away and the button control piece at the top is cracking along with the rubber over it. This is model DCST922B. I am really pissed off with this trimmer. I cannot and will not recommend it. When I first used it I was happy, but now I’m pissed. Lots of money wasted on batteries and chargers too. Try it at your own risk, but you have been warned👍😂. One more thing it shuts down after a short time in use then starts right back up. I also bought two new Stihl weed eaters and their bump system really sucks. Going back to Husqvarna next time using fuel. Screw these battery ones👍

      I use the smaller head on the Makita string trimmer. It should work fine, allows it to spin faster, but has less mass in motion

    I hope this doesn't sound stupid but is one those head that you tap and it self feeds?

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  4 роки тому +2

      hwjr1 yes. The t35 head is a bump feed head. When you bump the head on the ground the blue part feeds the line.

    I know that that old Dewalt head sucks and I hate it but what makes the other once better?

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  4 роки тому

      The old head was a bit difficult to wind line. If you didn't use it much and had to wind the line for the first few time you would think it's extremely difficult since you have to pretty much make a crimp on one end then start winding, without unwinding the other. If you winded the line a lot, you would be use to it. Also mine some how got damaged and string started breaking at the eyelet. The NEW one has a larger and smoother eyelet which is better for larger like like .095, and also winding the line is significantly easier, and you can wind one long line, instead of two smaller lines. When the bumper wears out on the new head, you can also easily just replace the bumper instead of the whole head unlike the original head.

    I recommend to only tightening lightly. the rotation of the trimmer will finish it for yu.

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  2 роки тому

      probably better advice. some heads will fly off when the trimmer brakes hard.

    you only have to lightly hand tighten it. that's why it's reverse threaded, it tightens itself.

    You don’t have to turn it on real tight. It’s designed to self tighten,that’s why they use a left handed thread.

    What are the benefits of this head?

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  4 роки тому +1

      loading the line is significantly better than the original head. Because it's easier also saves time when loading line, and if you're using it a lot, you save a lot of time. Also because of the design in my situation it gets caught less vines and wires.

    You do realize that is a reverse thread. I have Not seen any that are not as the head would fly off. Unless it spins the opposite direction. But thank you for the video. I am thinking of of buying one of these to chop it up and mounting the power head on the edge of my mower deck, being the brushless motor is on top of the head it would be easy to do.. Then putting the rest of it under the seat of my Zero turn and running a throttle cable to a thumb switch on one of my steering arms. Then I could just press the thumb throttle to turn it on and trim along my house and trees as I mow. I have a bunch of 20 volt max tools so the charger and battery could be useful for them as well. But I do not want to put a bump stock head onit. Instead I want a pivot pro head that holds 4 pieces of string doubled over and they are mounted so they can pivot so they swing out of the way when up against something and the string last forever without it breaking or having to replace it. I have used these types of heads before and I was real skeptical but they work rather well. I think they will fit as they are universal and come with many mounting options.

    I wanted something light weight and capable of cutting. This little string trimmer is just that ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . The battery will last about half an hour. It cuts through most weeds and grass. I wanted to see what this trimmer could do and tried cutting down some brush. It does okay with light brush but heavy brush, not so much. This is a great tool for trimming around the yard. It's not great for clearing out brush but no one would expect it to be.Out of the box, this trimmer is extremely easy to use. All I had to do was attach the guard and load the battery.
