  • Update: after recording this video I recently discovered that the issue with the John Deere 214 not getting enough fuel was the metal screen in the fuel tank was clogged with mud. All I did was drained the fuel tank and cleaned the screen while I was doing that I used vinegar and baking soda to clean any residue left in the tank then washed it out and let it dry.
On this episode of fixin it with Matt Gray All Day we had a chance on figuring out what the heck is making this late 70s John Deere 214 not want to start as it wasn't getting any spark but ran 3 years ago for a tractor show. The many causes where it sat outside which the weather got to it after running out of room inside, and also, she was a getting her cleaned up kind of tractor which I am planning to get restored to running great again.

I watched your video had a similar issue but I was burning up coils come to find out the coil needs an internal resistor, like yours on the outside said use an external resistor you might want to check into that

I’ll have to check that out. I know on the new mowers, later models they went to the external resistors. I kind of followed to old way it was setup from the factory plus on the JD212 it was a complete mess when figuring out the wiring and electrical parts. I actually blew 2 internal resistors from Amazon which were cheaply made before deciding to go to my auto parts store for some parts. Plus I know sometimes the wiring can be an issue I’m running into that now with a 316k I’m trying to get to turn over. I’m glad you were able to get I figured it out. Were you able to get her running.

@MattGray-2010 yes I was after I changed out the coil to one with the internal resistor I've not had a single issue so since then that's all I've used that was on a 214 I've put a 300 together 2 more 214s a 140 and now I'm doing up a 120 and no issues with the coils
