Thank you Jody for everything that you do, i started watching your videos as a teenager and you pretty much taught me how to weld and everything that comes along with it. I weld on pipelines now and I couldn’t have done it without ya! THANKS JODY
I am currently in welding school at our local tech school and just getting my butt kicked with overhead. After watching this and rewinding at certain areas has demystified a few things for me to my welds straightened out! Thanks for a great video covering this!
Watch your videos literally every day because I want to continue getting better. Just started at Greenville Tech in South Carolina 2 months ago. I’ve been hobby MiG welding for a few years and finally decided I wanted to get into the industry lol.
I worked with a guy who almost never started the next rod on the end of the last weld. He would start about a foot or so ahead of the last weld and work his way back. He believed that starting a weld on the end of the last weld could cause problems. He liked to be running hot when the two welds joined. It's unorthodox, but it worked for him. I do it too in some situations but not very often. I'm betting you guys do that too on the odd occasion. That might make an interesting video.
I'm glad you mentioned the rod oven, have you done a video on one, how long can you keep them out for, and all that jazz, DIY builds etc? Some DIY builds used a candle and people say if not damp then warmer then ambient temp, others say 250'f.
Another great video Jody. Maybe you can have a guest in sometime that will explain the volt/amp curve on setting a SA200 engine drive. It seems to be something that is not understood very well. How to make the arc characteristics you want by control manipulation
Thank you for all the informative videos. As a novice welder, the tips like where to prop and get a rest are a big help. Could you also include a full body shot from time to time to help with body position and work height?
Jody, I love your videos. I learn a lot from them. One tip, as a fan of yours, it to try to get 10 minutes in every video. #1 reason why, your views can learn more. #2 you get ad revenue. Obviously, you don't have to. I'm perfectly content with your content. Keep up the great work!
The first guy ever too show me how to do overhead was a littel crusty oldtimer. He had done nothing but weld all off his working life. I struggled to get it right, getting molten metal down my coveralls, making the heaviest undercut ever... Nothing but failure... Then this guys says to me; Hand me that stinger, boy.. An without even changing the amp settings, holding his welding helmet in one hand, the stinger in the other an his cigarette in his mouth... He layed down the bead. Nothing but pure an awesome lifetime experince.. I´m glad to have met guys like him. Everyone off them had some littel trick to teach. You gotta hang on tight when they start spilling knowledge on you....
I thought it was supposed to be overheard. This is still considered horizontal. If overhead tests were required to be done in this fashion, you would have more certified welders. Remember, overhead is having the v- groove directly overhead and not on an angle. Great demonstration on setting, position and everything else. Liked the video.
this is definitely overhead 4f according to the American Welding Society. Usually overhead tests are given in 4g (groove) and the v groove is directly overhead . but this is not a test. just a practice joint to help someone having problems with 5/32" 7018 overhead welds.
Jody can you and your buddy do a pipe video with 6010 root downhill then 8010 the rest of the way out maybe like a 10" or 12" pipe please in the 5g position
Great video. I'm having trouble learning 309 stick for an 8 inch sch 160 pipe test that's a life changer. I tried 1/8 inch 309-15 vertical and it's crowning really bad no matter how fast I move. I was welding anywhere from 80 to 95 amps and always undercut with high crown. Tried your j technique but still didn't pan out. I weld 10718 and 11018 for UT and RT on a regular basis so I can stick weld pretty decent. I have 3 days left to practice, anything you think would help?
Question here: i looked up the 7018 and it says that its coating is basic (if you call it that way in english). Now after my experience, basic slag is all glassy, unlike the one in the video. What am i missing?
I'm looking to get a new welder. I have a Hobart 140 and it doesn't have the power to weld thicker metals. What do you think about the mig/stick/tig combo welders? Is there a brand you like the most? Thanks
Best advice I can give is if you're still in high school you should take some kind of shop class. My school had an agriculture related shop class that was welding and small engines. If you're not in high school then I would tell you to find a cheap machine for home and practice practice practice. Jody's videos will really help you. I've been welding professionally for 11 years. You're never done learning in any craft and these videos have taught me a lot on top of what I already knew.

Best arc shots on UA-cam, IMO.
Not only is the actual welding good to watch, Jody's comments are much appreciated.
Andrew has got some serious steady hands. Wow
Been a while since arc welding was a good video to get me started again.
Thank you Jody. You have helped me a lot over the years.
On overhead got my practice plate Monday, always a plus to refresh and learn new things, thanks keep up the great work!
Andrew Cahdin! Loving these collab videos-- thanks!
Thanks Jodie and Andrew, I'm going through college at the moment and your videos help alot 👍
We did a lot of this type of welding in the mining industry:)
I honestly enjoy your videos. They are so informative. Thanks.
Greetings from Romania,Jody and Andrew!great video,as usual!
Nice video, great teaching. And you are right, as a weld inspector I do not like arc strikes!
Glad I stumbled on this channel. A lot of really good information and it's very neat that you can see the welding process as it's happening.
Wow, that's a beautiful bead. That's a great skill.👍
🤣
Thank you for this video because I will be doing this on Monday.

Great video Jody and good over head welding Andrew!!
Nice clean weld. And good commentary.
Most of the welding i do in the field is in really tight spaces. Where the angle of the rod is determined by the space available.

Very nice, thank you Jody and Andrew!
Thanks Jody and Andrew. Another great video!!!

Thanks Jody, also Andrew, thanks from the UK......

How are you not getting porosity from welding over the slag from the arc strike and from the travel to the tie-in point?

Sir, can you do 6013 overhead? I have so much problems with it.
What's your opinion on using dessicants (like small bags of dried white rice) placed in the rod containers to help keep them dry?

Do you have to remove the slag where there's a restart or subsequent pass or do you just weld over it?
Yes you want to remove all the slag and clean the previous beads good. If you dont it will introduce porosity.
Thank u sir for sharing the helpful video.
Thanks for the tips, great instructions
If using a ranger 305 G what’s best setting for over head?
hey, good morning, what kind of polarity are you using with the 7018, if i may ask ? direct or reverse?

Is this layer weld

What lens is he using?
This what I really need I'm on over head ne there is not a lot out there for just over head
Great session, thank you!
Been trying to close this quarter inch gap and could for the life of me do it
Looks Damn Good, and in the Paramaters
That 210 sure looks like it got no trouble handling that.
Anyone here can tell me what is the right amperes using 2.6 welding rod for overhead...i am a beginner..thank u so much..
Try 80-90 amps if its 7018
