    IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: foot candle meters measure perceived light intensity to our eyes, while PAR meters specifically measure light wavelengths that plants use to photosynthesize. I am measuring in foot candles, as opposed to PAR, because it is the most common unit of light measurement for houseplant growers. PAR meters are very expensive compared to foot candle meters. Using foot candles to measure light for ornamental houseplants like aroids will suffice. Aroids in particular are highly adaptive to a wide range of light conditions. PAR is more appropriate if you’re flowering and breeding plants, or growing edible plants indoors, because it will give you a more specific light reading for optimal growth. Hope the video was helpful!

    such a great idea with measurements in nature since a lot of people only give watts of lights instead of foot candles or PAR

    Keep in mind guys it was overcast. But sun and clouds move, at spot where 300 was measured can be 1200 or 2000 fc 1 hour later. Those plants are also getting dappled sunlight when sky is clear. Things can change quite quickly. However, there is +- 200 rainy days on average so those numbers can be measured quite often i guess but thats not what those plants are getting all the time, keep that in mind.

    • @plantgayforlife
      @plantgayforlife  4 місяці тому +2

      Yup, the light is fluctuating all the time. Most of the year Panama has a rainy season where it rains every day so these plants are used to overcast light😉

    • @mikedecem
      @mikedecem 4 місяці тому +1

      @@plantgayforlife yea thats what i meant by "200 rainy days per year". Funny that we have a plant group chat and we were analyzing anthuriums on the photos from rainforest where it seems some species live in fkn DARK and i was saying "damn i should go there to measure light" and you posted video few hours later haha.

    Omg I love you, I was stoned recently thinking “I wonder how much light all these plants get in the wild, anyway?” And I thought it’d be great to run around the rainforest with a light meter. So I searched “how much light plants in the wild” and you popped right up! Sad I hadn’t found your stuff sooner but happy to be a new subscriber 💃

      Appreciate that!😊 Aroids are great cuz the way can grow in a wide range of light conditions. Just remember that less light means water them less too😉 but you can definitely experiment! My pendant anthuriums have grown 2 ft long leaves while getting maybe 100 fc when I measured the light hitting their leaves!

    Brilliant light observations!💡 If you take requests, I nominate Rio for your next video shoot ( I envision you dancing your way down the Copacabana Promenade designed by none other than Roberto Burle Marx) Then you could do a deep dive of why there's over 50 different plants named Burle Marxii and maybe tour his home/ nature preserve/ philodendron collection/ UNESCO world heritage site???? A girl can dream 😻 Love your work Jake

      @@plantgayforlife I haven't been to Rio myself . I was just thinking you would do justice to the topic being such a visual, cerebral as well as musical creative, not unlike Burle Marx himself.
      And for a music video, the wavy stripes of the Copacabana Promenade are reminiscent of a Beatles Abby Road album cover on LSD😹 psychedelic in a good way, kinda how your music hits me in a swirl of sound and emotion. Love it! 😻

    So... growlights are all a lie?????? :O

    • @plantgayforlife
      @plantgayforlife  4 місяці тому +1

      Haha! I mean it depends what exactly you mean by that. They definitely work but only within about 12 inches of the light. Beyond that the light intensity dips drastically for *most grow lights - some are stronger. But having a light meter and measuring the light on the leaves will give you a much better idea on whether your plant is getting enough light 😁
