That guitar is totally from his early Metallica times! I love it, I love that 1983 video with Dave playing in the show. He looks bad ass with that guitar. Him and James looked really cool when they played together. Very classic.
Agreed man! I really like the stuff he did in Metallica, but you can tell he really stepped up his game on the first two Megadeth albums. He had something to prove✊
Mustaine was REALLY SLOPPY until Friedman tutored him. Since then, Mustaine has continually improved. Honestly, when I listen to Megadeth, especially the earlier stuff, it was Poland’s & Young’s solos that always caught my attention. Dave’s were always a second thought. Speaking of influences, mine are Hammet (I learned to solo by learning Hammet solos, but I don’t rely on that, anymore); Mike Wead (but not with King Diamond. I prefer Wead in his group, Hexanhaus); Friedman In the early-mid ‘90s, everyday, after work, I smoked bowls, put on one of my two Friedman instructional VHS tapes & practiced. That was until nearly losing my left index finger at work, getting depressed, giving up music, pawning everything & joining the military. Yeah, almost losing my finger f... me up that much. I started playing at 13. It became my way of releasing the f... up feelings I had due to childhood experiences. I studied classical & Flamenco guitar. It was my emotional/creative outlet. Seriously, when I got home, my guitar was in my hands nearly the entire time. I had a Marshall 4100 full stack & I would just turn on my Nady system & walk around my home playing. It didn’t matter what room I was in or what I was doing. I even player while cooking dinner. 😂 But, all if that went dark after the accident & surgery. I can still play, but cannot solo as well. The wide bends that Friedman does are more difficult for me to pull off, now. 😔 Anyhow, after more than 20 years hiatus, I am back at it. I rebuilt my guitar collection & still have my old (‘60s) Vox Cambridge Reverb amp that I bought at a garage sale for $10 in ‘85. I still have my Nady & use it whenever practice. 😁 I am practicing old songs & writing beats so I can through together some demos of my songs. Hopefully, I can collaborate with like-minded musicians. All of my songs are written for dual guitars & contain multiple bridges for solos. However, honestly, I only write solos for half of the bridges. I leave the others open so that another guitarist can CONTRIBUTE to the songs. In my first trash band (Cannabis), me & Damien (the guy who had the same type of BC Rich you have) played solos. I hated it when it came time for a solo & all eyes were on me. So, I talked Damien (who was strictly a rhythm guitarist by skill level) into learning how to solo. It took pressure off of me & it added that contrast of solo styles. So, yeah. Thank for your videos. They are helping to inspire me to pick myself out of the dirt & start playing again with MEANING & INTENT. I know what I am. I am a lone wolf, warrior. But, “where’s a warrior without his pride?” I lost my pride somewhere in the events of my life since I gave up on playing & joined the military. Music is an integral part of me. I forgot that. I forgot who I was, who I am. Your videos give easier breakdowns. I don’t have to deal with the frustration of figuring out the notes then the frustration of mastering them. I can concentrate on the performance aspect. So, thanks for the videos.
Thank so much man! I'm glad you're still rocking out 🤘. I think alot of the sloppiness was on account of the massive drug habit though! You can hear in the live shows how he was getting more and more wasted till the Rust In Peace era. That being said though, I think he was alot more adventurous with the leads in the early days. Maybe having a second guitarist like Poland or Friedman took the pressure off him a bit.
Oroku Saki, maybe the alcohol. He drank a lot, too. Could’ve been heroin. I’m just basing that on my years of “experimenting.” We made a rule (as a band) to not start drinking until our second set, because we got sloppier the more we drank. The weed & acid didn’t affect us adversely, it actually made us groove better. One night, after a band photoshoot with a local L.A. photographer, while on acid, we cranked our amps up (for me, 3 on my 4100 was enough to vibrate the walls, but I was at 5 that night) turned out the lights in the studio (there were no windows, so the only lights we had were from out equipment) & jammed. It was AWESOME! All we could do is feel the sound waves vibrating through the air, our bodies & hear the sounds we were creating together. Anyhow, I experimented with speed, back then we called it “crystal” or “glass.” I sat down & played my guitar & found myself being able to sing & play shit that I couldn’t when not pinned out on that shit. I think the heavy speed use by Mustaine helped him sing & play some of that early shit. Notice, now that he is sober, he has to concentrate more & his voice is really high-pitched live, more so than when he was amped up on speed. I pushed myself away from speed. It reminded me of cocaine, which f... up my life. (Actually, I went to the same rehab Mustaine went to & his first sponsor became my first sponsor). I tried heroin a couple of times. I hated it. I was totally useless. The second time I puked ALL NIGHT! 🤮 I know that he was self admittedly shitty drunk & smoking speed while recording “So Far So Good...So What.” The heroin & alcohol contributed to his sloppiness, I am certain of it. By the way, public service announcement: Weed isn’t physically harmful, but alcohol, meth/crystal, heroin & cocaine are all dangerous. EVERY manmade drug is. Cocaine & heroine are not “natural” in the sense that they are MANMADE, HIGHLY CONCENTRATED versions. Coca leaves, by themselves are not dangerous, nor are poppies. Weed it from the plant to the user, no human perversion. So, to any who use & read this, I hope you hit bottom in a way that doesn’t devastate your life & or loved ones & ween yourself off the hard shit. I’ve lost friends to heroin & cocaine. I’ve seen musicians careers go down the tubes due to it. After Cannabis split, I met up with a bass player, Matt Cohen (where are you?). The three-piece grindcore band he was in got dropped by their label before even recording because of excessive drug use during their tour. He was AMAZING! He has that Cliff Burton look. Long brown, slightly frizzy hair at times, jeans, he had that ‘70s throwback look. He played with his fingers ONLY & he was FAST & technical (he played grindcore with his fingers). We met up with a jazz drummer from Jersey who came to Cali on a music scholarship & we began rehearsing & building a group. However, Matt hooked up with this chick used heroin & he got back into it. It became his priority & soon the drummer got fed up & left. I left Los Angeles to get away from all of that shit. I knew I couldn’t stay given my past usage. I hope Matt is still alive. I hope he is well. Anyhow, sorry for my rambling stories, man. Regarding pressure, yeah, I hate it. I don’t have a “front-man ego.” I don’t want all eyes on me. I want people to NOT LOOK at us & just LISTEN to the music, but of course that isn’t part of the live experience.
@@ThrashRebel wow man sounds like you've had some fun times! I never got into the hard stuff myself but we used to drink like fishes at shows....Winnipeg is a punk town! Did Cannabis make any recordings I can check out?
Oroku Saki, nope, just demos that I am not proud of because the recordings sound like shit. My guitar sounds like a buzz saw on one & Damien’s voice got lost in a couple of points in the mix (he was moving a lot in front of the mic). Honestly, most of the music was mine. Damien would write pieces of songs (verses & choruses) & I linked them together. Those were our (band) songs. He had a couple of his own & Odin (the bass player) wrote one. Other than that, the majority were mine. I was a riff writing machine, back then. I’m not making up the names, either. I was the ONLY guy in the band with a boring name & we were like early Metallica in our makeup. The other founder was Damien (blond, controlling, ego maniacal). Odin is half Asian, like Hammet. He is Dutch Indonesian; his mother named him after the god. Our Gustavo drummer was the “foreigner” with the accent. He is from Argentina. I was the redhead, musical force driving the band. People used to compare me to Dave Mustaine, simply because of the long red hair (although mine was darker red & longer than Dave’s). I also wore sweat bands on my wrists, but that is because it just felt more comfortable. I HATE it when sweat drips onto my hands while I am playing. Anyhow, we were similar, personnel-wise. Ego & control broke the band up. I tried to quit, but Gus & Odin always talked me out of it. Damien’s arrogance & f... you attitude caused a falling out between him & Odin & Odin up & moved to up-state Washington. Then his control issues made Gus quit, because he was trying to dictate what tempos & beats Gus played. After that, I said f... it! I just met Matt because I was auditioning Odin’s replacement. I just headed in a different direction, but it led to a dead end. I am planning on re-recording our first demo song (“Color Me Of Dead”) as a tribute to those guys. You’re lucky you are Canadian.
