When I was just learning guitar I'd circle all the hardest licks in my TAB book and realized the same ones kept coming back. Eventually I realized there are really only 11 main licks in the Kill 'Em All solos.

I kinda try to resolve an octave lower for not consistency or randomize just below and bending for the accentuated fret 22 note xd

In fairness he really didn’t have to learn much. He was chosen because he was a really fast player. Pure fast twitch horsepower. James has said he can’t solo worth a damn, because he can’t do this. I am not sure I can do this at speed. Been playing longer than most viewers have been alive.
lessons from joe Satriani can't have hurt, but yes it's amazing what you can achieve as an obsessed teenager with not much else to do. I started at fourteen I think? And probably hit my technical high point two years by sixteen. After that got lazy and then busy with other things
As was pointed out by someone else in the comments, these are all fairly simple pentatonic licks strung together - the hard part is doing them really fast and really smoothly. If he was practicing diligently in those few years, it's not surprising at all that he was playing these parts so fast and so cleanly. Now, if young Kirk was just a casual for-fun player who didn't take practicing super seriously and was playing like this, that would be truly virtuosic. Never underestimate the importance of practice.

I know Kirk has mentioned he didn't like his playing here in hindsight, as he took majority influence from Schencker + had to work off of what Mustaine started, but man i always loved how these solos meshed perfectly with the riffs. So simple but I love them as much as the Justice solos

Agreed - I fuckin' love these solo's. To me they are the perfect balance of technique and knowledge - anymore of either and you lose something integral to metal. It shouldn't be too smart or too fast or it starts to sound prog. This is perfect.
@@littlecrowdemos4878 totally! I never thought of it that way, but you’re 100% right. I’m not a huge fan of all the techy prog metal that seems to dominate today. I just can’t appreciate it.
Still love these solos. Major major influence and all still in my bag of oft played licks.

Yeah, Kirk doesn't really do "complicated". More like "simple but really fast".
Yep. Same with Zakk; a lot of simple licks, but playing them at lightning speed. That's the trick.
Fast twitch muscles. Kirk is unusually talented. Bear in mind he plays the same rhythms James does and James is considered the best down picker of all time. 😉
Relatively simple in terms of musical theory. In terms of effectiveness, this stuff is the bomb. It's just tactical guitar and great rock music at the same time.
Agree, licks or riffs don't have to be complex to sound good
A lot of Hendrix's most iconic riffs are simple 5 note pentatonic stuff. The real skill is to play those 5 notes as good as Hendrix did...
This guy is the Metallica Decipher. Whenever I want to know what on Earth is Kirk doing, Mike is the man to seek out.

I am a product of Metallica. From the very.start. I first saw them on 62 st in Brooklyn it had to be like 1985. They blew us away and changed our meaning for life ! I last saw them at Giants Stadium in NJ...Amazing ! Over 50 screaming every word. I picked up the guitar because of them...and believe it or not Anthrax. Its just something about that RAW Metal Thrash !

What I loved about this lesson is it reminded me that I still need to practice these old school box shape techniques. I haven't really used them in so long that I just assumed I had them so I never really use them that much anymore but I forgot how fun they are and they can really bring some cool sounds to solos. Great lesson man! I'm gonna have to bust out some old 80's jams now, when I was a kid all I played was thrash and metal, I forgot how fun it was.

hell yeah! never ever ever feel ashamed to use pentatonic box shape solos or any stuff like that, cause that simplicity allows for endless creativity on your part. or just going nuts for the sake of it, which is always cool. rock on!

@@prometheustv6558 well it's a shame he only helped write four of the songs and that no one can claim he wrote the much better solos that came off of Metallica's later albums.
@@dudeman5303 he wrote quite a few Ride the Lightning riffs. And although obviously he didn't do any later metallica solo, his own solos in Megadeth are crazy good usually.
Most of the solos on this album are based mostly on energy/speed to be honest. They step up their game in the next album. I guess you could say that: "You don't need much to create your first album"

Satch himself said Kirk was one of his two favorite students, right below Steve Vai. Because what little time Kirk DID learn from him, Kirk made one HELL of a career out of it. Whether they're the most technical or not, each one of his solos, especially after kill em all, were GENIUS considering what he knew. He took that small amount of data and made it into MANY different solos that fit those songs better than anyone else would have done. They all match in their own way, to what their music requires. I don't think anyone can replace any of them at this point. It would just be weird.
You make it all look so easy, and your teaching style and examples are so laid-back, after 30 years of playing l have more confidence in my abilities. I got into Metallica and guitar right after And Justice for all came out, but l never attempted any leads/solos, but now l am inspired!!!
Whenever felt I wanna go or should into solo guitar play I always procrastinated and shied away. Like I'm not (never) ready, still gotta work around my riff level and technique. I could but I kinda will never do solos. Damn my mentality. It's now or never ffs! I heard I'm solid but always could do better cause I play too safely without any risk not to embarrass myself
I learned guitar by learning this album front to back (with solos)... in hindsight probably not the best place to start bc so many licks and riffs were the same lol... great video Mike!!!
Luckily for me I liked Sex Pistols as a teen. Literally one week in I was like "whoa, this is frigging great, I can play all of the rhythm chords to Anarchy in the UK, I didn't know learning songs was so easy!". LOL.

I needed this! Recently I was wandering how to play "hit the lights" solos. Guys on the internet played them much higher up the neck but I guess this is more comfortable

This has been the most helpful video about kill em all . I felt crazy trying to figure out these solos and looking at tabs and it was all very confusing. This made so much sense ! U should do this for Ride the Lightning

I would add "Number 12"... THE "tapping lick" that seemed to find it's way into EVERY solo on Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning ( as well as the Creeping Death EP w/ Am I Evil? and Blitzkrieg although having heard the Diamondhead originals, Hammett copped them note for note).
It's basically a pedal tone tapping lick say 12-15 fret high E tapping 17, 19, 20, 19 repeat once, 3rd time 17,19, 20, 19, 20, 19, 17 bend he plays in some variation or another all over the place.
I was very disappointed as a teen "on the Metallica wagon" years before my peers through a bootleg copy of "Metal Up Your Ass",and a close friend who saw them in Houston when Dave Mustaine was still in the band... but when I realized most of the solos on RTL that sounded so awesome? Were double and tripled-tracked and harmonized on the overdubs. Also to realize that Mustaine had more or less written most of my favorite tracks.
That being said, they are still two very incredible albums and though a little dated and ( seeming) cliched *now*? NOBODY played like that back then. ( I was also far ahead of the curve on Motorhead thanks to another close friend who had lived in Holland and brought them back along with the European releases of "Killing Machine" ( Hell Bent for Leather here in America), British Steel, and NotB, Killers, and Maiden Japan by Iron Maiden.
"With these licks you can play 90% of the solos in Kill'em All"... HA! good luck if I can play one of them correctly and at that speed (maybe the last one only) XD
take the song in a program that slows the song down without changing the pitch, (I know windows media player does it, audacity too) slow it down as much as you need to even if it doesnt even sound like the song any more. Learn it, and master it and move it just a little bit faster until you cant do it perfectly any more, master it, repeat . I was doing these solos when i was 16 just spending 20-30 minutes doing the solos off of hit the lights. by the time you get good at one the others come easier

Seeing this makes me feel better about my own playing. I don't really have to worry about using the same licks over and over as long as it works in the song. If it's good enough for a metal legend, it's good enough for me!

The lick @0:50 is used by Kirk Hammett in the Fade to Black solo. I am of course talking about the pattern only, not the notes themselves. Pretty much everyone who covers fade to black screws up that part by only playing hammer ons and pull offs. I’m really glad you’re teaching others how to do it.
The pattern is used in Sultans of Swing as well

It's really cool to see a breakdown of how Kirk come up with an albums worth of solos in less than month. Especially since he managed to stop it from feeling bland with very limited techniques
I'm 95% sure I'm never going ro be able to play those riffs at speed that he use for 95% of the album. But you did them 100% great!
Mike, you are an awesome guy. I watched this video and it has revived my passion for guitar playing. I bought new Flying V and learn second the Four Horsemen solo like in a two weeks. Thank you for that, I thought I was not capable of playing any solo ever!

One of my favourite kirk licks is a classic you can hear at 4:21 in the Four Horsemen. It's pretty similar to the 3rd lick in the video and off the top of my head he uses it in Fade to Black, Jump in the Fire and Seek & Destroy.

Me, who's been playing these solos for over 10 yrs: ""Hmm... interesting" I really think you should've mentioned that he combines the 2nd and 3rd technique, a lot, to create that almost sweeping technique. Which is used A LOT in the album. The one that goes E: 15p12 -> B:15p12 -> G: 15 or 14 -> B: 12-15p12. I know you sort of touched on it at 3:35 but I feel like you could've put more focus on it. When I was learning these, as a teen, this technique blew my mind.
Lol that's way too specific, he plays similar licks and explains that he uses a sweeping motion throughout the entire video, literally all you did was phrase it slightly different. You're acting like it's revolutionary playing when it's just a common guitar lick. His video lacked nothing.

This is more of a work for the picking hand, once you have acquired that speed the fretting hand will normally just follow.

You’ve got to try sitting with your V strapped on. Get the strap length to just where it barely sits on your right leg and you get the same feel you have here but without feeling like you have to support it with your left leg. After years of avoiding sitting with my V now I find it’s the most comfortable sitting guitar I own

Any tips for hitting those full bends beyond just practicing them a lot?
EDIT: I just realized that I should try hitting these bends with more than one finger (e.g. ring and middle) and suddenly they're much easier 😂
Bruh I made that same realization years ago when I started playing so as soon as I saw "EDIT: I just realized" I knew what you were saying before I even clicked "Read More" 😂 keep playing dude rock on 💪🏻
I realized that really soon, but trust me you should also practice bending only with your first finger. Believe me, some day you will need it.
I didn't want to insult you or show off but I always used to fingers and now I have to use my first finger only for a half step bend and it is complete pain. So practice your bends in both ways to avoid this. BTW couldn't edit my own comment lol
#7 is from Good Times Bad Times on Zeppelin 1- well that’s where I learned it at least. That’s one of the best.
I've always thought going from the main song riff into the solo was hardest.

cool roundup thanks! on the 10th lick, wouldn't it be more "harmonic" to - when you go to the b string - do the pull off from 15 to 13 and then SLIDE into that b (12th fret) rather than doing a pull off? then it would add the slide which you have on the other strings as well....
