Well VHS tapes immediately gets snatch up early to mid game. Finding that specific VHS tape is even harder. If you are lucky and know someone in the server who has that tape. Guard it with your life because people will carry it off and die in the middle of no where with it.
yeah, cazone VHSs with books, gives the most experience, I usually raid bookstores schools and the video stores for fast leveling 4 or 5, I cannot remember which level i usually reach edit: same with woodworking and cooking, super easy to level up with the VHSs
@@FinetalPiesgetting mechanics 2 means something, getting mechanics 8+ hardly means anything. If you really wanted “bang for your buck” you’d use the vhs after you got lvl 4. As that’s when it starts to really slow down and it’ll get you to the next thresholds a lot faster. By level 8 you’re able to do anything with a car, no point in saving videos till then.
Save them for the higher tier book bonuses if you plan on leveling mechanics any higher. They all give flat xp so its almost a waste to watch one for the first 2 levels.

This method works for other parts as well. For example the trunks of standard cars also require 7 mechanics and give 0.98xp if you read the xp book, you only need a screwdriver and wrench but it's also slower to uninstall.

And when shit hit the fan, I hop on my truck and go as far as I can. Welp... thing doesn't go smoothly, I crashed the truck three times. First time the engine start making noises, second time made the engine stall every 15 seconds. The the third time, my truck is dead and I'm forced to walk to the Army Surplus Store to look for vehicles. I found 2 crashed car with keys and tow my truck back to my temporary base, the gas station. I reclaimed most of my rainy day supplies and try to drive away with the crashed car, which burst its tire while not even leave the town. My character was a feeble, underweight girl, there's no way she can survive on foot and travel to other town. So the next week, she has to grind her mechanic skill to lv2 by assemble and dissemble a van near the station, over and over again. The process is extremely painful cuz she has to switch from different tires and parts to grind exp. After she trashed 2 originally good van and finally learnt to hot wire, thank god she made it to Ekron before food runs out. Anyway, after a month in Ekron, she stockpiled some engine parts and went back to her old partner. 6 month passed, she's still travel with her trusty black D-6 pickup truck.
You could just use the broken down sports car (assuming it's not a jeep or the FAT) then you don't need a lug wrench and jack because it's already missing the tire.
Hey Retanaru, any chance you know where to find a list of the xp given by things and activity done in the game? Or how much time (real life time) it would take to grind skills from 0 to 10 without any "boost" (be it from the initial skill levels, professions, or book multiplier) from initial skills present.
That's a really nice trick! Will make next playthroughs much easier to get to hotwiring levels. Any tips for what to do to grind the next levels? I kinda wanna get to Mechanics 5 but Mechanics is the one skill that I can't seem to get a bead on how to grind efficiently without suffering.
Best way is go to that lot in Riverside (or places in other towns with a LOTS of cars) then go and install and uninstall everything on a car, one exploit is that if you try something such as windows and fail, it gives XP but doesn't consume the "once a day" limit for that part.
Watch the VHS tapes for the rest if you can. It turns into a much more annoying grind. People use the automechanic mod (does all of the car stuff for you like a bot) or spam hundreds of light bulbs on a few cars.

Finding a sports car (the rarest of all vehicle types and by a mile). 3. Finding the tools (the easiest part of the strat, but still requires going on a mission) Like others have mentioned, read a book and watch a Carzone episode. You only need to travel to two places (1 if you luck out and find the book in a house while traveling).
Since I start with +1 mechanics to get 4x exp, I use a combination of VHS and light bulbs. VHS can be very difficult to get if starting in West Point though.

@@Retanaru i found carzone episode 1 gives you almost enough to hit lvl 2 with the book read so nothing goes to waste.

Automechanics is a fun mod, as well as autoreloading and autotailoring. I hate grinding stats manually so it's very useful

I usually use the OSRS XP Drops mod so I can see how much exp I'm getting without having to flick over the exp bars and do math.

Why does this require the Sport Car? cant you do this with any car?
The other car types require lower level mechanics so you can't fail on the same part over and over.

Why sports car in particular?
The skill requirement to work on parts is based on the type of car. Sports cars have 4 brakes you can do this trick on.
