Dealing With Boredom

- A viewer requested this so here it is. Not gonna lie, scaring my character straight is a top tier choice for getting rid of boredom and just imagining them hyperventilating in a closet every once in a while brings a smile to my face. Did too much zomboid rub off on me?

Can confirm, I also like getting panic attacks or getting chased by others wanting to kill me when I am bored. But sometimes playing Project Zomboid also helps.
Hol up
Wait a minute…
sus
Somethin' ain't right
Something isn’t adding up here, I can feel it.
"I'm bored, I think I'll go into this small room." Screams in terror for 15 minutes "...that's better"
That would actually work though, seems fun. I'll try it next time I'm bored.
to be fair, you would not be bored. you would be terrified.
If it makes you feel alive...
“I’m bored, let me go outside and run past my dead neighbors who now want to tear me limb from limb.”
And this is why horror games exist
You forgot about alcohol. There is hidden check for alcohol if you drink any (literally any amount of alcohol like 1/4 beer and instantly stopped) you will lose all of unhappiness when sleeping
100% can confirm... and I'm not just talking about PZ.
I usually skip beer because beer makes you sleepy and takes a lot of space but I might carry 1 or 2 cans just in case
@@gerald5561 Booze is great in multiplayer where you don't get tired! No downsides!
Also satisfies hunger and doesn't spoil you can live off booze for quite a bit.
Me starting in the Riverside Bar: Hungry... drink beer. Bored... drink beer. Need weapon... glances around at empty beer bottles.
I too find entertainment from killing people shortly after eating stale bread.
Appliances will work if they're placed against the _outside_ of a wall which has power. I find it useful to move a stove outside and place it against a wall by a door, then build a little enclosure for it to hide me from passing zombies. I can go outside and cook my boredom away, doing something useful at the same time which normally creates boredom.
Panic removes boredom is really neat. It works like that in real life too. Being a security guard can be boring sometimes, but when something special happens, you aren´t bored anymore.
I once had a zombie trapped in a metal door bathroom near the gas station in Rosewood. Never got bored because of him standing there harmless.
Reading in a car is the best way to avoid boredom. During daytime, you have 360 vision around you, so you won't get surrounded by zombies without knowing it. During winter, you can turn on the heaters so you won't freeze (I have done this in a Sandbox with very cold weather turned on, so I don't think you can ever have a temperature problem using this method).
or you know go inside a house
@@zwenkwiel816 I think the power has to be on for a building to warm you in the game.
@@Cacowninja that's why you pick one with a fireplace or get one of those metal stove things. like if you haven't even sorted out the heating in your house reading shouldnt really be a priority IMO XD
@@Cacowninja buildings provide some insulation without power (or doors/windows for that matter) but they provide much more with power. TBH unless you set up freezing temperatures in sandbox you're good with enough clothing.
This is one of the best info places on UA-cam for PZ. Praise you
There is also another method that at first may seem incredibly counter-intuitive: Dragging about zombie corpses into a pile, like if your guy is feeling bored or such just start piling up the zombies that started to pile up around your base and make piles of them, by the time you're done you'll see most of your boredom gone. Can't confirm it without some doubt, but I also believe it affect depression and sadness.
I guess dragging about tons of peoples who obviously had a fate worse than your kind of good for moral, in a weird ''least it ain't me'' kind of way, but I could be wrong. But I can confirm that I did loose boredom that I had gained working on cars (mechanic) by dragging the corpses around the base.
I like smoker for this reason, it's alsp funny when you play with your friend and in the middle of a fight you're like hol up gonna smoke real quick.
yeah being terrified is a good way to make ur brain stop making sad n bored chemicals
but always being terrified..has problems..
Can't be bored if you are still running away from the horde
so getting claustrophobic is a effective way of countering boredom... interesting.
Claustrophobic would never find anything boring they always in the thrill of Panik.
Thats why the Cd disc player is worth even more then Weapons due to that u can decrase it to listening to music or Books
I love how after killing dozens of zombies, my character is still somehow bored. Nothing is good enough for him apparently.
*goes into room while claustrophobic and afraid of blood*
*begins reading like this isn't a problem*
This is why smoker trait is a buff.
Also, if you pick invincible player made structures, you can build a zombie cage next to you and never get bored again.
Apocalypse Goals: Make it like the end of Shaun of the Dead... where the zombies are just exploited for entertainment.
Thats OSRS music right there Sir, got u
"Scaring the boredom away"
Man honestly sounds like a bad weed trip
Don't know if anyone knows and I know it's not relevant but I just figured out the coffee machines count as full ovens for 4 kg. Kinda useful
Boredom is where you get sick to fuck of seeing that little icon and want it changed
good old car trips would solve the problem or good old fighting with zombies Xd
Make a video about Lucky/Unlucky perk please. How does it work?
I have a question that hopefully hasnt been answered yet. Do clothes that reduce movement speed affect ALL movement? Or is it just running? Like does it affect movement speed while in combat stance? Tnx in advance :p
when will you make a new video about the traits? you know fot the stable 41 MP build
My character has crippling depression from eating 6 slices of watermelon.... game doesnt make much sense sometimes...
How can you check the specific level of your stats? Is it a mod?
does unhappiness build indoors if you have agoraphobia?
It can.
@@Retanaru well that sucks
bro pz needs more ways to get happiness, I have no idea how to be a chef so it'd be nice if there were other ways than just eating stuff. They should add weed or sumn to the game lol, kinda like how cigarettes lower ur stress smoking weed could lower ur unhappiness and boredom. and to balance it, it should give tiredness that goes away after like an in game hour or two depending on how much u smoked
They should really tie working out into your mental state. Working out should increase happiness (just like in real life where working out is good for the mind and body), while keeping the fatigue so the player is making a choice to boost their strength and happiness while suffering pain the next day, without having to down pills and read books constantly. It could be a healthier alternative to battling the mood meter, plus, you aren't limited by resources, just physical prowess.
Many years ago I suggested on Twitter that being bored while panicked made no sense and they said they agreed and changed it so that panic removes boredom. You're welcome!
So you're the one who made me pick claustrophobic
woah fr?
I mean, just the idea of being bored in a zombie apocalipse is kinda far fetched, so It really makes sense that you get rid of the boredom instantly by crushing some zombie heads, don't you think?
Always found it weird how you could get bored while killing zombies. You could have a lot of emotions while killing or seeing zombies but boredom should never be one.
@@justanotaku1420 Yeah, big time this, this is literally fucking stupid. But at least it goes away if you're panicked unless desensitized (Which is another stupid thing that you can kill thousands of zombies and never adapt to violence... It's actually really braindead that this isn't a vanilla feature, regardless of if this game is early access or not all their design trends don't inspire confidence especially with how nonsensical and just plain dumb these mechanics are.)
eats stale pizza
becomes extremely bored and severely depressed instantly
if I was starving to death in the apocalypse the last thing on my mind would be "hmm, this pizza is a bit bland" lmao
@@Tyrops I'd be like "holy shit pizza, I'd better enjoy this before I'll probably never get some more
When you eat a 2 week old chuck e cheese pizza that has become a solid rock
Project zomboid is the only game where I can made a peanut butter sandwich so bad it instantly makes me suicidally depressed.
@@Saktoth am i really the only one who's that bad at making food in real life
How does boredom interact with the Veterans Desensitized trait. Does being immune to panic make it harder to remove boredom by fighting zombies?
It does! It makes it harder to deal with this stuff which is an interesting caveat
The zombie apocalypse is no fun if you're ready for it it seems :(
You have to pick either
Panic, which will MASSIVELY drag the killing of the handful (to maybe a small herd) of zeds causing you panic....
Have to prepare an open space in your safehouse to keep boredom in check to outright be forced to use consumables to bring happiness.
Also Veteran impedes you from picking ANY Panic inducer/easer negative trait and vice versa
Veteran just means that boredom has to be cleaned as you stay outdoors, so by the time you whooped the brains of the last zed of a 10-12 herd, boredom might just been gone entirely from how long you stayed outdoors, and the exhaustion hits you
@@GreenTeaTheTea Bro that's statement is one hell of a right. It also comes from memories of the past and that nothing is not that fun as it was...
I've found that it works just fine. I always come back from looting runs not bored.
Me irl: sitting home in small flat for days and no bored at all
My zomboid char : severely depressed in his 3 story mansion
no internet man, that's the difference
It's probably the crushing desolation that's driving your character to depression. Seriously, we need interactable NPCs in this game.
Internet and games changes that. Ever since I got the net, I never wanted to go outside again.
Let's be honest, we would all totally lose our minds in 1 hour if the power switched off.
haha same here, i just don't get it
Speaking as someone with clinical depression, I can confirm that standing outside is a 100% effective way of instantly halting the progression of "The sad", as we in the business refer to it.
yes however it might not work when the "the big sads" kick in, sadly.
"The Sad" is a devious and cunning beast.
If you think you've got it under control without therapy and antidepressants, you . . . probably haven't.
*(Although I realise that antidepressants exist in Zomboid, your best bet for therapy is to hook up with a community containing an ex-therapist in an RP server).*
or you can always just take the gamer way out with a revolver
@@AmalekIsComing hey friend, I understand that you probably had something funny in mind when you sent this, but it's mostly just unsettling. I don't think you should be embracing the kind of mindset that lends itself to suicidal ideation, even as a joke. Violent humor isn't a good coping mechanism, and it really only serves to reinforce your own negative perceptions, conscious or subconscious. I'm definitely not saying that you can't joke about suicide, ultimately that's up to you, but I think you'd be a lot happier if you didn't!
@@ACanOfSunDrop is this a copypasta or something?
Boredom? Behold the almighty one wooden tile out the second-floor window!
Can you still build floors out a window?
@@Saktoth no.
we need Introvert trait 😂
Yeah LOL
Damn right. What is all this "being outdoors cures boredom" nonsense? Know when I'm most bored? When I'm outside... typically walking from A to B.
We went from ''you have too much anxiety to sleep'' to ''you have too much anxiety to be even bored'' lol
Just be claustrophobic and make a torture room. No more boredom!
can you go over anxiety aswell and how to deal with it?
Anxiety happens for a few reasons:
- You're hemophobic and currently have blood on you
- You're a smoker and haven't had a smoke recently
- Your character just had a nightmare (that anxiety will go away on its own), nightmares being mostly caused iirc by wearing dirty clothes or having killed a lot of zombies recently
- Your character is sick and the anxiety represents their fear of dying from the disease
Killing zombies reduces boredom.
This feels oddly existential... it fills me with a strange dread.
I wish in world events like hearing gunshots and helicopters removed boredom, it's hard to be sad about nothing to do when a survivor shoots a Shotgun from the next block down, drawing all the Zombies across your location; flattening traffic cones, knocking over your flamingos, and damn it that Zombies walking away with Dave Again! Leave My Gnomes Alone You Rotting Hooligans!!!
In order to make the game more realistic, they need to add a whacking off feature to cure boredom.
Boredom left unchecked will cause unhappiness. Unhappiness will lower your sanity.
Not that the sanity bar does much right now.
Great tutorial! Amazing how scaring your character to death is a strategy, it's like scaring away a hiccup!
I actually didn't know being outside by itself was helpful. Good to know!
0:10 you forgot to mention that being severely depressed will also make you draw your weapons significantly slower.
Anyways, great vid! Didn't know panic/just being outside removes boredom.
"How to cure boredom"
*"Induce an anxiety attack"*
I was searching for psychological advice but this one is better. I'll enter the wardrobe, close it, start panicking and then move to Narnia
I just read newspaper immediately. It was the most efficient method of me how to overcome boredom.
I don't understand some of the mechanics of this game. You are in middle of zombie apocalypse you find a goddamn stale ham that is not rotten and still edible but because its not fresh it gives you unhappines and boredom like ffs be grateful for todays loot bruh. Also when you eat the soup from a can it gives you less calorie and happiness but when you put it in a cooking pot even without cooking it gives higher hunger satisfaction and happines. Since I always pick smoker trait unhappiness and boredom is not an issue for me. I recommend smoker and jigga greenfire mod if you are gonna play with smoker trait. Quit smoking is also essential. You can quit smoking just like in real life but you may gain it back quickly if you smoke it again just like in real life.
can you do a tutorial for this but in real life please? reaching the depression stage
This aspect of the same really needs some work.
One single day inside a safe mansion full of food and drinks, training and learning new stuff from books: BORED and SAD. What the fuck? It's a zombie apocalypse, a normal human would be delighted after a relaxing day.
Simplest way my rat brain fixes boredom is go outside, blundgeon murder, go back to the hiding spot
Because killing zombies is not exciting by itself, but reading a book… oh hell yeah.
Smoker trait is very handy... Just smoke the thing down yeah
How can anyone get bored when doing excersice, PZ requires revamps in some aspects.
Got the mod Reading Is Not Boring. Such a game changer.
oh so thats why i rarely see boredom
i am panicked nearly every day from slowly clearing out rosewood (today i finally found the gas station, yes i am new)
Is Rosewood any good? I started in the Riverside Bar and have been slowly.... um... depleting the beer supply while looking for a bed so I don't have to pass out in my own vomit on the floor for the 5th time.
Well that makes a certain amount of sense; if you're panicking over something you certainly have your attention on something and aren't mindlessly sitting there bored.
This needs to change, it's impossible to work on your base or grind anything without getting crippling depression.
I'm still on a self imposed covid-19 isolation (which people commonly refer to as quarantine, but that's incorrect use of the term). Sometimes, my boredom goes up crazy high, so I've been using your tiny closet trick to great effect! Nowadays, even just the thought of a tiny close does the trick! 😁
Panic as one solution? I didn't expected that. Thank you Retanaru, you're doing an important role on the community!
The first boredom noodle says "occupy yourself, or seek entertainment." Any timed action should gradually decrease boredom, at the very least stall it. It is very confusing from a new player's perspective, the game tells them to occupy themselves, and when they do it they get punished anyway.
Yes, bordom is boring...
I think watching tv can also get rid of boredom/depression
Something that isn't obvious in the vanilla game is that drinking ANY amount of alcohol will completely remove all unhappiness after a few hours. Even a 1/4 sip of a beer bottle works.
Me: eats the same things every day happily
Zomboid character: suicidally depressed after eating leftovers once
>loot a shopping district while game ending 347 zombies
>find a brand new sports car with the key in the ignition and 97% overall condition
>go home absolutely loaded with things that will make your life easier at an atomic scale
>most exhilarating day of your entire life
>comfort yourself with knowing there's 108 bars of chocolate in your kitchen cupboard
>still become severely depressed and borderline suicidal from spending 7 hours inside
bruh
I'm new in this game, but after this videos tried in debug mode make maniac ))) If you completely naked with Hemophobic and covered with blood -> stress falling. What stress influence? I can sleep and damage RNG but i think the same, and items transfering almost the same.
Watch the Dog Goblin movie in game. The panic caused by watching the video all of the way through reduces my character's tiredness, boredom, and depression. I'm not sure if any of it is intentional, but it has been helpful when I'm super tired, depressed, and need to finish whatever I'm doing on my MP server.
Books. The end 😅
This is why being a Veteran is a trade-off; without Panic, you can't relieve boredom as easily as a Veteran, and essentially have to go outside and murder things, or just be outdoors for long periods of time. A regular character with Claustrophobia, as you mentioned, can lock themselves in a closet to relieve the boredom, which feels...not realistic tbh, but it's definitely worthwhile to consider.
Not that it matters late game, you can collect enough books and reading material to drive boredom off, and eventually enough ammo and guns to shoot all your problems away
Boredom from being indoors can be prevented altogether if you build a custom base. Prefabricated buildings and houses inherently increases your boredom because of a hidden unique indoors property that comes with all prefabricated buildings. An custom indoor house does not have this property so anyone can enjoy all the benefits of being indoors (plumbing, temperature, lighting) while none of the boredom-increasing cabin fever that comes with it.
My character is freshly bathed, wears clean clothes, eats very fulfilling food, reads an entire skillbook in peace while inside the safety of the base and also waiting for the rain outside to stop so we could go out to continue killing zeds. Their mood: "find a way to forget reality."
Tbh, even when severely depressed, panicked, and anxious I noticed almost no difference on MP, though I am also used to slowly moving things from inventory to inventory due to my old trait setup but even then its still faster than having that and I can easily put up with it.
The only time it becomes inconvenient is when I have to transfer wood planks into my backpack, but again, dont notice it all that much.
Me who's illiterate and camping in the deep forest
*Chugs 5 bowls of salad to feel happy*
There's a lot of things I like and dislike about this game, but the boredom and unhappiness mechanics are probably the most bullshit aspect I've seen so far.
my character has PTSD, im literally a veteran with a trait from a mod that is named paranoia which causes you to panic randomly so i can beat the boredom without going outside, reading or even having clausthrophobic
Wat, no "if you have high fitness just sprint over to a zombie, smash head in and run back home"? that's how I do it :D
Does scaring yourself to avoid depression setting in work in real life as well?
Kinda? When i was playing through Doom 3 in VR (There's a mod) i found myself becoming temporarily much happier during and after the bigger "jumpscare followed by fight" scenarios. It's very immersive, and got the adrenaline going nicely.
usually it just makes you flip from not caring about anything to being extremely stressed out, and the rest of the symptoms are pretty much unaffected. but i also had an anxiety disorder back then and the depression in this game is meant to be purely situational in cause rather than a persistent brain thing.
the ONE good thing about claustrophobic is that you never have to worry about boredom, getting bored? just go to a tight space and its gone. aside from that the perk is just annoying
I build a second story balcony, and place a wood stove so you are in the radius. Bam warm outside reading while safe ;-)
tbh adrenaline junkies do crazy shit to cure their boredom all the time, so seeing your character put themselves through panic situations when bored does make a bit of sense.
Waiting for the "how lucky is lucky?" video.
Honestly i always prefer to go out and kill zombies intentionally to get rid of boredom. I play with respawn off too so im doing myself a favor at the same time
becoming a smoke addict .is the best way to solve boredom. you can smoke while having panic attacks
Fun fact: if you worship the Dog Goblin, a single viewing of the VHS tape can put even a desensitized veteran into a full-blown state of panic. The Dog Goblin protects.
On my very first attempt at the game I was spawned in a tiny home with a few cabinets and one of them had a single VHS tape marked the Dog Goblin. I figured it was probably some kiddy cartoon or something... Yeah. That didn't go down well.
And if you're a smoker, just a smoke a few cigs and you'll be fine eventually.
game literaly said go outside and touch grass
Indie stone should have take Introverts in account. We don't feel bored while being indoors.
Can't be bored when you be just created a new underwear stain from sheer terror.
thank you so much, this was very helpfull. You my friend are a UA-cam
UA-cam gave me an ad about saving money on depression medication, nice.
Love how the game inadvertently demands for your character to touch grass once in a while.
"Just go outside" That was it? That's all I have to- GODDAMNIT
If this was CDDA you could just find some Addies and be gucci.
