If you build a barrel on a roof over an existing sink, you can plumb the sink in if you have a pipe wrench. I've done this at Cortman Medical - plumbed in the sink in the kitchen and also the upstairs bathroom like this.
There is also irrigation mod that allows you to connect multiple barrels together with irrigation pipes to make a bigger water reservoir for yourself. I have storage for like 4k water in my base :D
In fact if you put multiple barrels next to each other and then plumb a sink, all of the reservoirs will be connected to the sink. Unfortunately they drain in series so it's hard to tell. There are actually a few metal barrels (not drums) around the tents at the fence to LV, they hold 800 units of water each!!
Tainted pond water wont kill you, if you drink it directly. The game kinda still does not treat it as dangerous for some reason, although filling it in a bottle will probably make someone sick. PrivateLime lately played a character and constantly drinking "funny water" without ever getting to see the "sick"-moodle.
That ending shot reminds me of a dream I had as a kid that sticks out in my mind, being stuck upstairs unable to leave because a horde of zombies is just chilling downstairs & for some reason the weapon I chose to arm myself with was an electric flyswatter.
@@MidtWinterRose I think those animal prod taser sticks, and police tasers would be interesting. Handheld tasers would be cool as well, could maybe craft a taser with say a baseball bat and foil to make an electric baseball bat lol
For up-to-date concerns: If the water dispenser runs out of water, it will automatically refer its next water storage that is placed adjacently a-floor above itself. Shortly, this 9x9 Rain collector method still works!
Doesn't that mean you can theoretically make an infinitely large rain collector grid over several floors? Also, if I am not mistaken, it's 5x5, not 9x9
...Only if you want to live like an animal. Rain barrel on a roof (or even out a second floor window 1 tile adjacent) above a sink, plumb with the pipe wrench, this filters it safe to drink. Multiple barrels can be plumbed. The fishing stores usually have the good barrels to loot if you lack the carpentry skills. There are some metal barrels that hold 800 in LV. The barrels will fill in the rain, but can be filled with buckets and pots from a tainted source and the sink filters it. Pro tip: Snow doesn't add to your rain barrels, so be prepared for winter with extra water storage.
Maybe a fair thing to mention to new players (the one you skillfully left out) would be the little detail/fact that for making stairs and barrel water collectors you need a carpentry level of a whooping SEVEN. So new players trying this will basically go like "wtf.. i can't do that" not knowing they need some skills to actually get there. simply put : just boiling the water : no skill required, takes 10 seconds plumbing and making water collectors : carpentry level 7, tons of wood, garbage bags and nails + hammer, saw, axe, wrench... see what i mean? maybe fair to mention that one way is simple and the other is well.. not so much? and wouldn't having the low attention span be affected more by doing the more complex method? lol

This works even on buildings that are already there and that have a concrete roof and pre-existing sinks. The only requeriment for this to work is that the sink (either built by yourself or already there) has to be in "inside" space. Has anyone tried the sinks that have a regular rooftop over that doesn't go up a full level? example: The fire station in rosewood has a sink off of the main vehicle bay with a regular roof over it that appears to only go up half a floor.
for your information, rain water is toxic, so if you just plumb it you get a nice supply of ................ tainted water, you have to build a filter with gravel (grey floor in the garage entry of a house) sand (yellow floor at the entry of a house or in the sidewalk and a plastic bottle, once you have the filter you install one filter in each sink and THEN you have drinkable water
