As Jesus was dying on the cross some of his last words were “Father why have you forsaken me?” His last words were “Father into your hands I commend my spirit.”

They were afraid the label wouldnt be okay with it so its called Chop Suey as in chopping the word "suicide" in half
The words ''Self righteous suicide, when angels deserve to die.'' means? What the song writer/lead singer said... “It occurred to me how we are judgmental towards people, even in death,” explains Daron. “If someone died in a car accident, you’d say, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ But if they died in a car accident while they were drunk, that would change your whole perception of how they died, and judging his or her death a in a different way. For some reason, that thought was weird to me. I was probably smoking weed or something…Daron is the guitarist who wrote it.
The lyrics are from Jesus.. The term "self righteous suicide" is referring to his death, which he couldve technically prevented if he wanted. When Rick Rubin was helping Serj with the album he took him into his library. He had him pick a random book and it just so happened to be The Bible. He opened it up to a random page and placed his finger on the page. The verse that he picked was, Luke 23:46 - "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Rick has talked about it in past interviews.

I just started playing that acoustic guitar, and that’s when I started writing Chop Suey!.” Serj did change a few words however - Including the opening. Daron’s original lyrics were completely different: ‘Tell me/Tell me what you think about tomorrow/Is there gonna be a pain and sorrow/Tell me what you think about the people/Is there gonna be another sequel?’ System singer Serj Tankian would alter song’s opening...So perhaps he did alter those words, I was just giving Daron's side on what it all meant to him.
I must admit - Whilst Serj's tweaking the opening into something more mainstream, I guess, for me personally? Daron's original words made more sense lol - so yes, Serj tweaked it but Daron wrote the original concept/lyrics.
This song helped me so much as a kid; I have MASSIVE ADHD and my dad bought me a drum set and played this song for me, withing a week, I was matching the drummer note for note. This song helped me learn to concentrate.
The song is about the circumstances of a persons death and how it affects other peoples view of them. Death is a tragedy in almost all cases, just because someone dies from overdosing or something like that doesn't mean they deserved it, they were sick and needed help and compassion not scorn and hate. So the lines "trust in my self righteous suicide" and "I cry when angels deserve to die", as well as the whole song of course, are references to that outlook on people that die under such circumstances.
I feel like there are some Christian undertones/criticisms as well. The whole verse could be interpreted as God waking up, deciding create everything "grab a brush and put a little "make-up," and then hiding the scars with the passage time to cover up the horrific atrocities that come with His interventions (or lack thereof). "Why'd you leave the keys upon the table" seems to be a criticism of giving free-will to humans by comparing him leaving the control of a dangerous vehicle to crazy tyrranical people. Also, "you wanted to" means it's all part of a plan that involves his complicitness in all the tereible things that have transpired throughout time. I also think a lot of the song is about Jesus talking to God as he's being tortured on his deathbed. Jesus was in many ways the perfect human but God still let's him get tortured mercilessly. This is especially relevant in the lyrics of Jesus saying "Father into your hands...why have you forsaken me?" and "I dont think you trust in my self-righteous suicide." The line "I cry when Angels deserve to die" could be a condemnation of God because God allows angels like Lucifer to live and slander Him while he allows His son to die in a terrible self-righteous suicide, all of which he could've, in fact, prevented in the first place, but as the verse says "you wanted to."

Bro in the middle NAILED it when he said “It sounds like you’re in battle” because that’s the point of this entire 2album set “Hypnotize” and “Mesmerize.” The first song on this album is called “The soldier side” and is supposed to represent exactly what fighting in war is like.
well for a start, the song's initial name was "suicide", and Daron Malakian, who's the guitarist, songwriter and second vocalist of the band, said that the song is about how people look at you or judge you depending on how you pass, like if someone dies from a drug abuse, people might say they deserved it because they abused the drugs, the line " i cry when angels deserve to die" ties to that.. the "self righteous suicide" line it's when you are convinced you have a good reason to do it it's a deep song if you tie the lyrics, while some other lines were just randomly choosen as Serj Tankian, who is the main vocalist, said
as a matter of fact, the reason they changed the name to Chop Suey was because they couldn't release it if the title was "Suicide", so they changed it to Chop Suey, as it's a play on the words "Self-right-chop suey-cide". pretty clever if you ask me, as is their music tbh

Not wanting others to know your suicidal thoughts purely to avoid judgment. He cries for these people ("angels") that believe they deserve to die
*UPDATE* Actually Daron confirmed it wasn’t the record label that forced them to. They just thought “Suicide” was a lazy title, and didn’t exactly had to do with suicide in particular, so Daron got inspired by the word “chop suey” that was used in old gangster movies. And it play well with the words “suicide” for reasons I already explained. Daron said: “It was something they used to say: ‘We’ll make chop suey out of him!’ It meant, ‘We’re gonna kill him.’ It tied in with the whole death thing.” --- The original title was “Suicide”, but the record label didn’t allow it. On their album, the singer says *”we’re rolling ‘suicide’ ”* before the songs starts. They went for *Chop Suey* as in “chopping” the word “suicide” (or *sui* in this case). So they just went for “Chop Suey”.

I highly highly recommend Rage against the Machine and TOOL. When listening to either of those two groups looking at lyrics isn't a bad idea. If looking for something older I'd recommend checking out Rush.
Rage FOR the Machine is dead. They BECAME everything that they fought against when they made their albums.. They are nothing but WOKE establishment mouth pieces now..
Songs where the vocalist raps are considered to be in the genre "nu-metal".A good metal band that has also rap is Rage Against The Machine.Killing In The Name Of or Down Rodeo are some of my favourites from them.
With rage against the machine you should look for their performance at pink Pop or when they went to london. Their best songs are wake up, bomb track, testify, renegades of funk. Killing in the name is overrated. Its good but the lyrics are repetitive and don’t showcase lead singer Zach de la rochas vocals and rap style.
yes but system isn't really a Nu metal band. They don't sound anything like anything else that is considered Nu metal and are more towards something called industrial?? I dunno. I just call them unique.
Dazed and confused (studio version) by Led Zeppelin is a go into battle song. There is a double drum drop that happens in it that will literally make you want to grab a battle axe and go into battle. You’re getting better and not interrupting the song too much and pausing. It lets you get into the feel of a song better.

Good reaction vid! They definitely are good at that whole "push-pull" effect. Nicely melodic at one point, then straight into high energy rock and screaming. They were always pretty unique in their style. Aremnian-Americans. Lead singer did a lot to bring worldwide attention to the Armenian genocide. A good deal of their songs even include some hints of Armenian folk songs. It's a trip. Super unique. They've got a number of really good tunes.

Just a little suggestion, maybe after you guys listen to the song and get that inital experience and reaction, a review of the lyrics could be helpful. It can be hard to understand as you listen to something the first time and sometimes seeing the lyrics may add to the reaction too. You guys are awesome and I hope you get more into alternative bands because there are so many good ones!!!!
Seriosuly, this is my only critique of their video’s. I love their actual reaction, but they add 1-2 minutes to gain an understanding of the band and the meaning for the song. I’d listen, so that they get that extra little bit so it’s not so “drive-by” review/reaction.
@@claytonkirby878 right - i get that. But thats why its important to understand the background of why a song was written in the first place. It allows you to access and hear the song in an entirely different way - regardless of genre. Obviously the musicianship (if rock or country) is what draws you in - but for R&B, Hip-Hop and others the lyrics are essential to the song having the impact it does.
I love seeing a couple brothas expanding their horizons and love seeing their reaction to My music. I listen to everything from rap to metal, country to pop, but I know a lot of the folks from da hood don't get that kind of exposure. I worked with several brothas from KC that were mid 20s at the time and had never heard anything but rap. They thought I was a Crazy ass white boy when I played VH Running with the devil 🤣 Very cool guys.
Not sure if anyone else touched on this, but originally there was a lot of discussion around the song being about the Armenian genocide that happened in Turkey around WW1. System of a Down has always been very outspoken about their Armenian roots, and condemned the US government for refusing to acknowledge the genocide. The bridge of Chop Suey apparently quotes a famous poem written about the genocide, so a lot of people thought that was the connection for a long time. Even as someone from an Armenian background, I think Chop Suey's actual meaning is way better, and a more important message for people to hear right now. Love watching you guys react to some of my favorite bands. If you haven't already, check out Tool. My personal favorite is Right in Two. The drum solo is incredibly complex and beautiful.
Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" This is a song about addiction

This was the first single from System Of A Down's second album, Toxicity, and their breakout hit. The band was an unlikely success story, emerging in mid-'90s Los Angeles with unpredictable, often lyrically inscrutable songs with very high pulse rates. They're all of Armenian descent, and early on many of their fans were friends from the Armenian community, which led many labels to believe they had just a small niche. Rick Rubin, one of the more adventurous figures in music, signed them in 1997 and turned them loose, releasing their first album (which he produced) in 1998. After about a year of touring, it became clear their appeal was widespread - they were in many ways an antidote to the boy bands that were dominating pop music at the time. By the time they released Toxicity on September 4, 2001, they had a substantial and fervent fanbase. The album went straight to #1, defying predictions from years earlier that they would only appeal to Armenians. "Chop Suey" was climbing the charts when it was silenced by the events of September 11, 2001. Just about every radio station pulled it from their playlists in an effort to be as sensitive as possible after the tragedy. Even though the song had nothing to do with terrorism, it was considered far too aggressive. The line "I cry when angels deserve to die" was a little too heavy for most program directors and listeners at that moment. When things settled down, the song returned to the airwaves pretty much where it left off, since there weren't many songs released in the weeks after 9/11. We have Papa Roach to thank for clearing a path on MTV for cathartic songs that reference suicide. Their "Last Resort" video, also directed by Marcos Siega, hit the network in 2000 and was highly censored, with not only the word "suicide" edited out, but also related references like "bleeding" and "took my life tonight." By the time System released the "Chop Suey" video, which aired unedited, it was clear that young people were finding connection and meaning in these songs, and were in no danger of attempting suicide simply by hearing the word. Jesus said, "I commend my spirit" in Luke 23:46, which is most likely where that part of the song came from. The line "Why have you forsaken me, in your eyes forsaken me?" is likely referring to Isaiah 49:14, which says "The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me." >> Source www.songfacts.com/facts/system-of-a-down/chop-suey
Supposedly this song is about how people view death differently depending on how a person dies. For instance, they might have more sympathy and compassion for someone who died of cancer, but if a person dies of a drug overdose, they "had it coming." Or, of course, how we might process a suicide differently than another death and judge someone who chose to commit suicide. You can surely imagine a number of other scenarios where people tend to value a life and death differently depending on the circumstances surrounding their death or certain details about them as a person. Hence the "when angels deserve to die." The band also wanted to name the song "Suicide" but that idea was shot down and they changed it to "Chop Suey."
I view it as very Biblical in nature, "self-righteous suicide" refers to Christ saying "I will die for you regardless of your transgressions", and "I cry when angels deserve to die" could either refer to those whom were good individuals but fell prey to wickedness or when Lucifer was cast out of heaven as a fallen angel. Notice how the song also gets more aggressive when describing behaviors, actions, attitudes, and then more peaceful and poetic when describing reactions, outcomes, etc. Truly awesome.
I love watching you guys react to these songs and videos. Takes me back to the first time i heard them also and makes me so happy. I think thats why reaction videos are so popular. People like seeing that
He doesn’t say angels deserve to die He says he cries when angels deserve to die The meaning of the song is that we are all angels but some people are judged harshly depending on the way they died. I.E by suicide or addiction etc , those people will be seen as weak or not good so he’s sad that people who die from mental health or addiction are judged and seen in a bad light when mostly they can’t help themselves and see no way out or help
BYOB was the first song i ever heard from them. music video came on MTV when MTV was actually still good and played music. but BYOB is an amazing song. love sytem of a down

well for a start, the song's initial name was "suicide", and Daron Malakian, who's the guitarist, songwriter and second vocalist of the band, said that the song is about how people look at you or judge you depending on how you pass, like if someone dies from a drug abuse, people might say they deserved it because they abused the drugs, the line " i cry when angels deserve to die" ties to that..
the "self righteous suicide" line it's when you are convinced you have a good reason to do it
it's a deep song if you tie the lyrics, while some other lines were just randomly choosen as Serj Tankian, who is the main vocalist, said
as a matter of fact, the reason they changed the name to Chop Suey was because they couldn't release it if the title was "Suicide", so they changed it to Chop Suey, as it's a play on the words "Self-right-chop suey-cide".
pretty clever if you ask me, as is their music tbh

Been a fan for 25 years. Saw them many last, including last summer and seeing System next month live. Ahhh cant wait!!!
Aerials, Toxicity, BYOB, Prison Song, Sugar, Question, Spiders, Mesmerize, and so many other System of a Down songs you gotta check out....These guys were one of the biggest bands around when I was in high school. Their music got me through some rough times.
FOSHO..
Hypnotize!!
Why
im a year older than you. What a great time we living ya. To experience this 1st time. Dont forget, Mr.jack, fuck the system, ATWA, nuguns and damn many more!
I am grateful that you can see a music group that is far from showing off women, wealth and ego. They only show skills, talents and songs that describe the social conditions around the globe.
I love Hip Hop & Rock. No other artist from either genre grabbed hold of me like System did. Back in the Napster days I downloaded a bunch of their songs from the first 2 albums. I was amazed by each and every song I listened to. I couldn't believe how good they were. Never before has this happened nor has it happened since. To this day they remain my favorite band, by a mile!
Shout out to my napster OGs
As awesome as Napster was... Metallica and Lars were right
@@00higgo Dude, same! I was SO pissed at Lars for years 😂
I made my peace with it when I went to the Summer Sanitarium tour in Atlanta (with Korn, Kid Rock, Powerman 5000, System of a Down) when James hurt his back on lake Lanier earlier that day and couldn’t perform. 🛥💦🤕🩼
First, I was super scared I was about to be at ground zero for another concert-fail riot👀 😳🫣🚒😵💨🏃♀️
Then Lars assured all they would be back that summer to play two nights for us free (with our ticket stubs), then proceeded to give us all the best fucking mashup of all the supporting bands jamming for hours, even restarting in the middle of songs with an idea to “let’s try it this way off or that way”.
It was legendary 💣
The two summer makeup shows were amazing too. 🤘
So, yeah, I called it even and Lars is off my shit list. 😂
Try mudvayne album LD 50.
A little more progressive with the musicianship standpoint. System of a down is one of kind and it sucks they haven't been able to put there differences aside to make more music, every song is great.
Tool is another band to look into.
@@trippinbawls88 It is their intellectual property. They should get paid for it's use. That was their point and the entirety of this was my point. Grab a brush and put a little makeup (You wanted to)
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up (You wanted to)
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table? (You wanted to)
I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide
So I cry when angels deserve to die
Been rocking to SOAD since 2004, still my favorite musicians to listen to,, this is how I've always interpreted the lyrics:
It's about depression and suicide. Depressed, so you put make-up on to cover the pain; you're mind is all over the place, so you leave your keys in the wrong place; then head out for another day of stories to tell so no one discovers your truth. Not wanting others to know your suicidal thoughts purely to avoid judgment. He cries for these people ("angels") that believe they deserve to die
Thank you for explaining the lyrics, now I understand them better 🙂!!!

Daron said: “It was something they used to say: ‘We’ll make chop suey out of him!’ It meant, ‘We’re gonna kill him.’ It tied in with the whole death thing.”

The original title was “Suicide”, but the record label didn’t allow it. On their album, the singer says *”we’re rolling ‘suicide’ ”* before the songs starts.
They went for *Chop Suey* as in “chopping” the word “suicide” (or *sui* in this case). So they just went for “Chop Suey”.
I thought because they were eating chop suey when thinking of a new name, so they went with that 🤣 i read it somewhere, but could be wrong.
Man I'm learning a lot about my favorite songs today. That's great.

You guys are seriously the best at reaction videos. I rarely get much value out of these but this was excellent.
The “hook” is him reading passages out of the Bible. I get chills listening. One of my favorite songs of all time and I’m not even a huge fan of the band.

Watching y'all videos I've noticed that Killmonger usually grasps things the best.
Love this song. First song I learned to play with a band as a cover, I want to say 2001 or '02. You guys might like the band "Falling In Reverse" if you are somewhat new to rock, they have some cool melodies and grooves. The song "losing my mind" is the first of a 3 part song series with dope videos. Best of luck, love your content!

The one in the green had me rolling 😭😭
6:28 this line was actually from a book. the singer was chilling with rick rubin and he didnt know what lyrics to write. rick rubin said, pick up a book from my wall and open it on a random page. thats what he did.
Nothing demonic is heavy metal unless you look for it to be. Bring up the words an you'll see exactly what they mean. Keep up the hard work.

That Final Four shirt is bringing back memories. I was 14 in 1995 watching those games. UCLA had a squad! Tyus Edney!
The line "Why have you forsaken me, in your eyes forsaken me?" is likely referring to Isaiah 49:14, which says "The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me." >>

I,work in a busy bar and love to come home to the country and watch your reaction videos..they make my weekend
The bro in the middle got it... Heads got be banging ...❤️ #respect ...
SoaD and their singer, Serj Tankian, are LEGENDS. THey are AWESOME in show
I kinda wish we had a lot of popular music from different genres nowadays vs now it just feels its just pop and rap we need more creativity
Gotta give you guys props, stumbled onto your channel talking about music with my dad. Good work fellas

He doesn’t say angels deserve to die
He says he cries when angels deserve to die
The meaning of the song is that we are all angels but some people are judged harshly depending on the way they died. I.E by suicide or addiction etc , those people will be seen as weak or not good so he’s sad that people who die from mental health or addiction are judged and seen in a bad light when mostly they can’t help themselves and see no way out or help
