That’s rad! First car a ever bought was a 72 1200! I was 13 and I bought it for $50 with my paper rout money 🤣 I fixed it and ended up selling it before I was old enough to legally drive it lol
I haven't come across any A14 head that flowed better than an A12GX head at high rpm. A14 motors are a dime a dozen compared to A12GX motors though. A12GX head, A14 block machined to fit an A15 crank. Car weighs less than 700kg. Lots of fun, and will always take you back home.
My first car purchase in high school. 1981 year, 1970 Datsun 1200 (LB 110). Dropped 70 series rim on rear, 60 on front. To keep tires off the stock fender flares I put 2" leaf extensions on rear. Rebuilt motor with flat heads and overboar cylinders. Polished heads with slight overboar values. New cam, and Weber carb. Probably gained a whopping 12 HP, Lol. But super fun speedy 4 speed manual drive. Plus check this, 42 mpg with those mods. Back in the 80's. With wages per hour back then I could still go anywhere I pleased. Loved that car. P.S. purchased for 400 cash. It was a piece of crap before I did work on it and painted metallic green. My dad was not pleased with my 15.5 year old choice....
I live in Trinidad West Indies. This car was known as the Datsun 1200 fastback, debuting around late 1971 in our country. However, the 4-door sedan was far more plentiful. Most were 4-speed manuals and was the first small vehicle to make 100 MPH stock ! ......And it used to give 40MPG !!. The automatic transmissions came a couple years later. This car was also known as the Datsun Sunny in some countries. It evolved into what we know as the Nissan Sentra. The car was very basic, and the engine was very basic, being copied from British Austin engines. Eight overhead valves operated by pushrods, a single carburettor, mechanical cooling fan pulling air through the radiator( Free draining, no coolant bottle), contact points, condenser and rotor in a distributor with an outside ignition coil. The wheels were 12". The same engine was later used in the B210 and B310 cars, though there was a 1400cc engine also, and a 1500 twin carb. There are still a few Datsun 1200s on our roads today.Watch an electrified Datsun 1200 demolish the pilgrims ! ua-cam.com/video/crfEecV1YFA/v-deo.html
Back in the day I had a friend of a friend ask me to do a swap on this exact model of car, when I got there, there was bolts all over the floor and a ca18det motor next to the car. I began to work grabbing bolts that I figured were the bolts that belonged to each part I was installing , after about 4 hours the motor was finally sitting in the bay, it was a tight squeeze and close to the firewall. He plugged in the computer and it fired right up with no hesitation , filled up the coolant and proceeded to go for a test drive. Let me start off by saying that as we pulled up to the first stop light there was a super cherry nova sitting there next to us. We looked over , he looked at us and gave us the nod, light turned green and we had the jump on him, that little Datsun pulled so hard my sunglasses fell off my head, the next couple lights were red, the nova pulled up and told us to pull over. So we did and met up in a parking lot. Nova guy was soo confused, he demanded we pop out hood he had to see what the hell was under the hood. We opened the hood and he looked like he didn’t really know what he was even looking at with a blank stare, of course we told him it was stock but he wasn’t buying it. We shook hands and went our separate ways. Me and a friend couldn’t stop laughing and talking about the nova we had just completely destroyed with a little Datsun. This video reminded me of that little 1200 because it was the same olive green paint minus the clear coat lol. Thanks for posting really cool car and build
Who cares about horse power anyways ? Unless your drifting or racing of course. That is a gorgeous car regardless of power , it’s about the looks and styling for me.

My 1st car was a1972 Datsun 1200. I bought it for $675 in 1979, and by then it was a rustbucket - it had been used as a beach car. But it was a great car, got good mileage, had very good pickup for such a small car, and did all I needed.
Nice 1200! I had one with an A15 that had the GX head with dual SU carbs and Isky cam. I still have a few A series parts that I'm looking to let go cheap if anybody is interested.
Correction Datsun b110, my father had a red one. Sold it to a friend who put a rotary in it and ended up wrapping the car around a concrete barrier taking a corner in Puerto Rico. Rip Datsun!
My first car, in 1985, was a 1970 Datsun 1200 fastback that I bought from the original owner, my step-mother. I did what I could to it on a teenaged burger-flipping budget. I loved that car and I still have a soft spot for them.
I seen a lot of this cars in Puerto Rico back in the late 80's where the street racers and Drag racers put a Modified 1.8 from 81 corolla and some had bridgeport rotary engine. Another common upgrade engine used was the Datsun 1.5 liter. At that time there was racing parts available for the Datsun 1.5 liter engine.
I bought my 1200 coupe in 1982 and still have it. Sorry to those who want to keep it stock because it's undergoing a 1UZ swap and I can't wait to drive it.
These cars pretty much resemble the 1970's Subaru which was sold in my country, including the DL and the GSR (sports model). I saw another "under the hood" view and this one, yet I cannot see where the battery is...
Maybe in California they are uncommon to build but in the east Coast loves these Datsuns, they are just hard to come by, they are becoming more and more rare
Wow what a great build!! I had one.. Was bright orange. Turbo charged the original 1200GX motor. Stock rods, crank and cam made 236whp@ 20psi. Used Toyota 2E pistons.
My first car was a Toyota KE30, almost identical to a datsun. It was 1300cc and drove pretty well. Used to have the idea to swap a 4age motor into it..... now looking at this, maybe i might make a project like that again
I drove this Datsun 1200 coupé in 1973 - 74 a few times as I was working in sales-parts-stock-Datsun French importator ( my first job ) , I liked this car , but I prefered the Cherry 120 A coupé ( KPLE 10 ) , front Wheel -drive with same motor but transverse over the gear box ( like Austin Mini but separate gearbox from the motor ) ; I have own one yellow Cherry 120A coupé from 1979 to 1989 ; saddly I left it very rusty for scrap
70 HP for for 1500 pound ( 700 kg ) car is not bad. I bet it is a nippy and fun car to drive. congratulations with this, i LOVE datsuns. I have a datsun 120y coupe, wich also has the A12 motor, it goes 160 km/h with 3 people in it with no problem :D
"...lighter than a Volkswagen Beetle... I don't know; don't quote me on that..." According to Wiki, it would seem you're correct! (Wiki lists the old-school Beetles between 1,760-1,850 lb.)
exactly this car is lighter than an volkwagen beetje 1200 from 62 the datsun is 1500 pound he said but 1500 pounds is 680 kilograms and a beetle 62 is 760 kilograms even my civic hatch from 97 is heavier than the datsun
My Dad bought a 210 4spd new in 81. It was indestructible. They're light. Great cars. I think it had that motor in it. Very sporty. He's tricked that one out. Side draft and the header. Nice.
I have a rhd pickup variant of this exact body style... Weighs 720kg and has a A14 motor in it...You won't believe how strong these little motors are, especially when you turbo them
So beautifully done, your ability Larry to find these gems is amazing. How good is the exhaust note but even better is that glorious induction noise from the Weber carb 😍. Joe is a nice bloke too 👍, thanks Larry for another great find
Such a beutiful little car! Reminds me of my mom and dads B210 they had when I was a little kid. Ours was ruined in a flood. My dad was heart broken as it was the first brand new car he had ever purchased. He had put aftermarket webber carbs in it, custom exhaust, race steering wheel, gauges and all sorts of stuff. He set up my car seat in the middle of the back so I could see out the front and attached a little steering wheel so I could pretend to drive.
Any lightweight car with a little pep and a manual transmission will be a blast. I had a blast being my friends designated driver in his turboed Ecotech Cavalier with a stock Cobalt SS ecu. Since he was drunk he let me drive the shit out of it. It was surprisingly fast for what it was.
That is the coolest nicest car i have ever seen .And i would eather keep stock like that or maybe later Trurbo cjarge a 280 ZX worked engine in it with about 800 to 1000 Hp . But no no no ...keep it as it is def .
I love this build! Looks absolutely beautiful and the style is almost the same I'm going for with my opel kadett c which is actually also a 1200.. love that he kept the og engine in it 🔥❤️ I'm lookin for 80-85hp at about 790kg

Kudos to the owner for keeping it real, and NOT swapping the engine
Yep. They have been swapped with almost everything imaginable..
Is swapping it to L series ok..?
@@werlii I would like to put an L28 under the hood of these 1200's but an LS swap never never and never no more generic V8 swaps
L28ET swap would just be nuts 😂 but honestly a vg30e would probably fit better and it's not as long so it keeps the car more centered
@@toxictophat711 I feel like just a N/A SR would barely fit 😂😂
