in 2017 the V12 Supra was sold at auction and smokey only got around 70,000 for it after fees. He used the money to help fund a white R35 GTR he was building at the time. A lot of people asked him "Why did you sell such an iconic car for so cheap, isn't it worth 500,000 to you?" Most of the older Japanese generation disagree. These cars were built to be driven, used, abused, and loved. They weren't built to sit in a garage as a trophy. I feel like this is something that western audiences will never fully understand.
They don’t understand because they think the amount they spent on the car that should depreciate should be profited. There’s 150,000 mile Mitsubishi Lancer Evo’s going for 40k$ in America by PRIVATE SELLERS, driven hard. Modified to shit.
He had the nickname "Smokey" prior to his visit to England, the nickname comes from the fact that he constantly has a burning cigarette in his hand, whether he's working on a car or racing a car he's always smoking. A 12 second quarter mile is still pretty decent today. Alot of sports cars 10 years later in the early 2000's barely ran high 12's. People don't realize how fast cars have gotten. Most sub 300 hp family cars with a new gearbox will hold their own against an older, stock sports/muscle car.
Cars in general have pretty mediocre quarter times. It's hard to justify taking a $20,000+ street car onto a track to get spanked by a $5,000 jr rail with a 350 small block. Even go-karts are running 10 second quarters these days.
@@Iridiumcosmos All cars are tools with prices and functions. They can be compared on price alone when the function is standardized (in this case quarter mile time). In this comparison, all street cars still have an abysmal price to performance ratio compared to any real motorsports car.
@@actually5004 Here’s the thing. You’re still comparing stock street cars to aftermarket/OEM performance vehicles so your argument is all over the place. The same motor you mentioned needs to be tuned and beefed up which will be double that $5K at the end of the day. A street/family car is built for one goal in mind and that’s to get people from A - B comfortable. Just like how performance cars are built for their own goals in mind. If you’re going to sit here and compare price points then don’t use an apples to oranges comparison.

PSA: Smokey is the God-Father of speed i heard too btw !
Really great video. It might be weird but his story keeps on getting inspiring the more I hear it. The dude was a legend. I got to know him from the Tokyo drift video game on the PlayStation 2. His infinity g35 with 700+ hp. Then I realised that he was the creator of the top secret brand. I don’t think there’s any brand more iconic than Top secret. Simple and meaningful. The car skit was funny, nice job showing off the sponsorship and making the film not only informative but enjoyable.
you're a good storyteller. i'm not even into cars but I was totally invested in the story.
Really enjoyed all that.
Fantastic piece of editing & story telling .
Now I don’t know anything about cars but I know Smokey got swag
In the late 1990s Top Secret was already a well known tuner thanks to Max Power magazine and videos like Beast From The East, I remember coming home from school and seeing Smokey on the local news channel having been caught doing almost 200mph on the A1, the mid 90s to the early 2000s tuning industry left a very influential mark on me.
Doing burn out near the cattle, trying to reach 300kmh on foreign soil and have a tuning garage called top secret. Definitely a legend 👌
That's an incredible story. Also, well done Albon with this video that properly conveys the details.
Great video, dude! Always love hearing the Smokey story. You told it well.
Congrats on the success of this video, found your channel from it as i’m sure many others have as well. Albon deserves a lot of subs for this one.
this always brings a smile to my face when i watch videos like this
Just wanna say congratulations to Albon on this video goin viral blowin up! Currently at 2.65 mil views!! Real top quality channel, fantastic content. Keep on keepin on!!
@@actually5004 You literally just compared an aftermarket car to a stock car.
@@Iridiumcosmos Did you read the OP?
This video was extremely well put together! Good job.
When you said "never gave up on his dreams"...and stared at the camera 🤳....chills! My dreams of building a mid-engine V12 Lexus IS300 practically became a reality!😳🤔🤫
That would be sick!
I have a v12 bmw e46 sedan dream
That gon be a unique build
Do it man. We are all capable, may require some sacrifice and hard work long nights but at the end you’ll realize it was worth it!!
What engine would you use?
I remember getting boxes full of Max Powers from my older nephew who was moving out his parents' house.
Jun Supra doing 200+ runs in USA, Top Secret' tunnel run in the UK, girls getting asked "pink or brown?" at car meets, etc.
Nostalgia, I loved the video!
What does Pink or brown means?

This is the man behind legendary videos in the 2006-2007 era
As a kid i remeberd Top Secret as the fastest tuning company from old racing games like forza motorsport 2, it’s cool to find out inside lore about them and that they were actually real
Tommy Kaira was another tuning company that i rmeber too
I've been using Opera for a long time. I never even knew they had ads on youtube. Never saw one. And the built-in vpn is pretty good. It doesn't interfere with download speeds like some others.
It has some great features! We are very lucky to have them support the channel!
when i first started getting into cars i was recommended a video by Albo (lol) and his friend met and bought one of the TS cars on the spot, didnt know what was going on or who smokey was but im glad i know now :) very informative in an entertaining format thank u
15:27 "converted to left hand drive" wow what a shame.
This Guy is probably the greatest Car Turner that ever lived!!!!😎👍
Awesome show out of Smokey Nagata he’s so ahead of his time forever a Legend of JDM! Great Vid 🔥💯
i have found my spirit animal and my new quote " i grind so hard they label me criminal but in reality, they cant keep up"
It’s so weird to hear an American talking about Smokey doing 194 on the a1!!! Growing up in the max power era in the uk, this was legendary. The rh9 Japanese club was all I wanted to be apart of when I was a teen
The iconic moment in the Supra clip where the first cop who goes to his window shouts "DO YOU THINK THIS IS A BLOODY PLAYGROUND??" in the thickest brummy accent ever.
smokey is a legend man, also such a well put video. Great Job 👍🏼
Mr. Nagata is a legend.
Such a legend!
Now that's how you write an intro. 45 seconds in and I am so hooked.
Smokey is really a legend 💯 bless up from Portugal 🇵🇹

Only ever knew the story about the 200MPH Supra on UK roads. Total awesome to see his other builds. That V12 Supra is just balls out crazy and that GT-R powered R32 well holy shit all I can say is I WANT ONE!
The Supra sold for 70k recently
@@marklynch1305 that's it? Seems cheap imo

Incredible video, so good to learn more about this dude.
Amazingly smooth, enthusiastic, educated documentary.
Thank you for this, like most car nuts born in the 80s and 90s I of course have heard of Nagata, but didn't know anything about his life story.
I drive on the A1 everyday to work and to think he did 194mph is absolutely crazy. Especially if you saw the quality of the A1.
The A1 is the longest road in England with a number I believe.

Smokey is the realest alive. He is the drift king.
Damn, so nice that I have an edit on him, Smokey Nagata is legendary
i love nagato's style. he prefers R32 but accepts a technological leap of r35.
for a car person for myself honestly, back in 2016 i used to be a car & anime editor back on, Vine years ago.. i started to be a car person more and more cuz of the car edits i’ve been seeing, plus the year is 2021 (aka. last year) then i saw Smokey himself on tiktok, i’ve been wondering this man was so i started to do some research on this street racer! for younger car people, i have a feeling that half of the car community knows who he is cuz of the JDM car community, plus i’m very happy to apart from it and someday i will make my own dream build i’ve been wanting to do for years, like ever since 2016 where i’ve been starting to learn about cars.. :D aaaaaaaa . .
( opinions vary ) loved his cars, the iconic supra with the Rb and the fact that I can see it whenever I want to since it is owned by a member of the Al attar family in my country. Legend!
You say “opinions vary” as though Smokey has a big audience that doesn’t like him? I’m just completely ignorant is that true? Do a lot of people not respect his work or something?
@@Thatdudewiththedogs I'm sure anyone would get alot of flak for putting an RB in a Supra
