That's awesome!!! My first car was this exact same car a 1972 Datsun 1200 with a hatchback. What a blast from the past, it brings back a lot of great memories.
Some of the information is inaccurate here, but then again I had one as my first car and have been driving them for 30 years at this point. These got way better than 26 mpg, ads from the day where in the high 30s and personally with a 5 speed swap on one you could get high 40s no problem. Way more than 30 of these left in the country also, I have pictures from several of the larger Datsun meets with quite a few in attendance. Also have a buddy with like 8 himself and a couple of the sedans. Seriously, I've personally owned like 4 of them and still currently have one...although mine is running a 2.4L out of a 240sx in it.
I am currently in the process of resto modding a 1972 Datsun 1200 coupe just like this one. I can't wait to post some videos on my process on it. I had no idea there was only a estimated 30 still in use today. I can't wait to be a proud owner of one. I've always loved the old Datsuns especially the 1200's. Thanks you for showing that beautiful example of classic Datsun history!
Just the name "Datsun" brings back memories for me! Had a 1972 Datsun 240z. Instead of the stock twin single piston carbs, had three 2 barrel Holley carbs! Yep,.. more commonly known as a "Six Pack" back in the day! Also, ground effects and low tail fin. Solid black and was confused of being a Porsche several times. British built so it had a five speed manual transmission instead of four! Loved that car.
@@jacksin3323 Beautiful car and very stable in the turns! Wider wheel base than the other Z cars and sat just a bit lower too. Loved that car. Mine was originally that awful orange they came in. The owner before me had it painted black and put ground effects on it. Wood steering wheel was stock but I used carpet foam under the original to sound proof the car a bit more and it made it easier to feel the car as it maneuvered too. Yeah,.. fantastic car!
I owned one of these for several years, the most reliable old car i ever owned. I used to do all the maintenance myself including tuning as the A12 engine is so easy to work on. Took it on several long road trips in Africa including off road and it never let me down. The diff was worn and used to make a humming noise at speed, the 4 speed box can be replaced by a 5 speed. My neighbour owned one and he had upgraded the engine and gearbox, mine was all original with twin S.U. Carbs which were a challenge to tune correctly. Used to wheelie in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear that is how light it was. The body work was not in great shape as the roof had dents and rust on it but mechanically it was one of the best and most reliable cars of it's time. This video brings back many happy memories of road trips and wild camping in the bush.
I had The One Bug Green Sunny 1200 - $1866 on Sticker, and $2124 out-the-door. First one out the door in April 1971. I need to get another one to make my life dreams! ... Hours necking with 'Fluffy' in the Sunny. I gotta stop before i breakdown.
My first car was a ‘72 Datsun 1200 coupe. Mine was a butterscotch color. It was my dad’s car and he gave it to me and my twin sister when we were seniors in high school in 1974.
A friend of mine had one in the early 80s. We tore up the curvy dirt roads late at night. A perfectly balanced car. Back before drifting was known we drifted on dirt. Thanks.
Hi Jared! I had a 71 my first car! My husband got it out of the junk yard! the front end was cut off! He pop riveted the front end back on! I LOVED that car!
That’s a sweet little ride!! I know where one is just sitting rusting away into the ground😳 I had a 73 datsun 610 man I loved that car! Sold it to get up to Alaska best move I ever made
Had a 1971 1200 in 1980. Had a 1400cc transplant. Very fast. 15.5 quarter mile... at 71mph. Floats valves at 22 mph in first grear (built in rev limiter 😊). Very easy to work on. Wish I had it back.
Woah! Very cool! If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico, most of the major malls, have a similar display with race/show cars as "planters". Hoping to document a restoration on a 1973 1200 soon!
The old Datsuns were cool. My mom had a 74 Datsun 710, my aunt had a 510 and my uncle had several different models. He was a Datsun auto tech at the local dealership.
I used to have one of these that I set up as a canyon racer with an A-1200 motor, which is rated at 1198 cc, that's why it's called a 1200 and put out 92 hp stock. I swapped in an A14 SSS motor from a later model Dotson B210 and a five speed gearbox. It was a real fun corner carver… also, they were rated at 40 miles per gallon from Datsun when they first came out with stock a 12 and a four speed (Look up their posters for the 1200)
When it was being driven, the sound of the transmission brought me back immediately. We were given one that hit a deer, and was worn out. Being poor, we gladly accepted it, and I pulled the A12 engine out and had it bored and the head done, and I put it back together with new parts. I put an after market carb on it and let me tell you, that thing was fun ! It hauled A** , considering I picked up The engine into my 4x4 F250 by myself.
Nice! My pal's parents had one that they allow him to drive in 1974... but stock, of course. A real economy car, more so than the 510, which was also a cool ride.
My first new car after serving in Vietnam was a 1971 Datsun 1200. As I recall, it was $1,700! It was a 4-speed stick, 4-lug 12" tires, and a beautiful lime-ish green color. A fun car to drive and since I was slimmed-down in those days, I could easily drive it around , get in and out easily. My wife bought a brand new 1971 Chevelle and it was a bit more exciting to drive, haha! The Datsun, to this day, was the best car I ever had for driving in the snow in zone 6B. I traded the Datsun in, still have the wife, on a brand new Chevy Van with white spoke wheels, rember those? Oh those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end, but they did...
I had an ‘85 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE (last year and highest model of the first Gen) that everybody always asked me if it was a Datsun. It was a fun little car, and not bad at all for my first car.
My dad's first brand new car was a 1971 Datsun 510 station wagon...family car. I faintly remember him trading in a big block 63/64 Ford Galaxy on it...sad I know. I drove it for a little while in high school in the 80's while I was fixing my truck. It was a great shaggin' wagon/party vehicle.😂
🖐️on the Datsun brand name. I drove the crap out of my step dad's 79 Datsun 2wd pickup. Looking at the rear end you can tell where the 240 Z got it's looks. Thanks for traveling to check this car out and letting us ride along with you.
I had one of those when I was stationed at Okinawa, Japan. Mine was R/H drive, and I think it may of been a 72, and it was called a B110 Datsun, and it was pretty quick, and fun to drive!
Hahaha!!! The thing is like a high speed train wreck! Horrifying, but you can't look away!!! I WANT ONE! Or several. Expertly massaged paint and body work. The color is perfect for the body style. Thanks for letting us see it.
I had one of these, great little car very economical, only problem, other than the bodywork was the carburettor float being metal, they also used to rot and flood the carb.
Less than 30? That's amazing because in 2015 I belonged to a Datsun club in the SF Bay Area (2000 Roadster and a 510) with well over 20 1200's on the road. I guess that just leaves 10 for SoCal and none for anyone else.
My first car ... frm South Africa... was red Datsun 1200 GX Coupe... came with twin carbs standard ... did 180km/h on clock ... 5 gears .... most other cars in that era only had 4 gears ... bullet proof engine ... not bad for a 1200 ... i notice that engine dont sound too wonderful
My friend in high school bought one new in 72, he abused the car beyond belief. He had abused a '69 mustang mach 1 before the Datsun. That was the time of the " oil embargo "
That's awesome!!! My first car was this exact same car a 1972 Datsun 1200 with a hatchback. What a blast from the past, it brings back a lot of great memories.

Got here from the FB post where hotheads car is listed for sale, seriously beautiful car.
I had a green 1973 Datsun 1200 coupe. A good and great looking car. Still missing it.
I am currently in the process of resto modding a 1972 Datsun 1200 coupe just like this one. I can't wait to post some videos on my process on it. Hope you will be posting plenty of video updates.
Hope you will be posting some videos
👍🏻
I remember driving my cousin’s Datsun B210 as a new driver back in the late 70’s. Fun times.
Very cool and I remember seeing the Datsun 1200 when i was younger. Thank you very much. You and your family have a blessed week.
Remember hell yeah, drove a '72 1200 sedan. A hoot of an econ-box.
👍👍
Very cool. "Those were the days, my friend".
I had one of these when i was 17 yo. it was my 1st car. wish i had it today. it was a super fun car.
That's a car that is truly a classic you don't see many of these
I do remember them, young man.
My first vehicle was a 1979 datsun 620! I absolutely loved that little truck. I miss it every day...
Minitrucks are 🤌
It's pretty cool, I liked the Datsun 510's too
Just the name "Datsun" brings back memories for me!

My dad had one in this ugly yellow/tan color. No sixer though. The carb barely ran iirc... GORGEOUS car though.

I definitely remember the old Datsun cars and trucks. Cool little blast from the past.

I had one of those from 1980 to 1985...I still miss it. It was a burnt yellow.
Sweet love the Datsuns
My first car was a ‘72 Datsun 1200 coupe. Mine was a butterscotch color. It was my dad’s car and he gave it to me and my twin sister when we were seniors in high school in 1974.
Great looking car, even better is the condition it's in. Thanks for the video!
I remember those cars

Thsts awesome I've owned many Datsun cars snd trucks I miss them all
Hi Jared! I had a 71 my first car! My husband got it out of the junk yard! the front end was cut off! He pop riveted the front end back on! I LOVED that car!
I like the fact you put out videos like this something different and still has its place in the history of cars/ racing
Thank you!
We used to run tricked out Datsun 510's. 2.0L truck engines, side draft Weber Carbs, headers, etc. The suspensions were dumped. What a BLAST!
The original rice burner 😎😎😎
That’s a sweet little ride!! I know where one is just sitting rusting away into the ground😳 I had a 73 datsun 610 man I loved that car! Sold it to get up to Alaska best move I ever made
lol just had the exact car offered to me as a trade. had to look it up on youtube where i found this video of the exact same car😂
Had a 1971 1200 in 1980. Had a 1400cc transplant. Very fast. 15.5 quarter mile... at 71mph. Floats valves at 22 mph in first grear (built in rev limiter 😊). Very easy to work on. Wish I had it back.
That thing is a beauty.
I had the pickup. When I hear laughter during test drive that tells me it`s fun to drive. I like that and reasonable gas mileage too.
Holy cow! I haven't seen one of them in like 30 years, and it's only an hour away from me.
Woah! Very cool! If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico, most of the major malls, have a similar display with race/show cars as "planters". Hoping to document a restoration on a 1973 1200 soon!
I had a Datsun truck 1973 it was a lot of fun

Nice. Back in the early 90s we had an old Datsun pickup where I work, and my knees were always up around the steering wheel. 🤣
😎👍
I have never seen one of those.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Super cool Drifter
You could get Japanese GX parts through US Datsun dealers. I had about six of these over the years :)
My brother had a 1978 Datsun F10 best woods beach car ever built. Nutmeg color
Awesome video. Love the Japanese Classics. 👍🏽
When it was being driven, the sound of the transmission brought me back immediately. We were given one that hit a deer, and was worn out. Had a B210 wagon and a early 280Z. The mechanicals lasted way longer than the bodies. Had to use the welder on both.
Cool little car. It sounded great! You definitely don't see those on the road every day.
Thank you sir 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Haven't seen one of these in a long long time. I bought a new 1971 Datsun 1200 back in the day.
Nice! My pal's parents had one that they allow him to drive in 1974... but stock, of course. A real economy car, more so than the 510, which was also a cool ride.
Aloha and mahalo! Use to cut out of school in my friend's 1200. 510 were nice also.
Yes I remember Datsun my Father bought a 1972 Datsun station wagon.
My first new car after serving in Vietnam was a 1971 Datsun 1200. As I recall, it was $1,700! It was a 4-speed stick, 4-lug 12" tires, and a beautiful lime-ish green color. Cool. I can't remember the number, but my mom had a Datsun station wagon, 76 model. Great car!!!
I had an ‘85 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE (last year and highest model of the first Gen) that everybody always asked me if it was a Datsun. It was a fun little car, and not bad at all for my first car.
Really interesting and rare car for sure! Thanks for bringing it to us Jarod!
Take care and stay safe buddy! God bless!🎚🙏🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Yeah I remember those In the 80's my dad had a few of them
My dad's first brand new car was a 1971 Datsun 510 station wagon...family car. I faintly remember him trading in a big block 63/64 Ford Galaxy on it...sad I know. I drove it for a little while in high school in the 80's while I was fixing my truck. It was a great shaggin' wagon/party vehicle.😂
Cool car can make these run and are pretty fun
I used to own a 710 wagon, back in the day.
lived datsuns, cheap easy to work on and huge mpg lol. had a 210 coupe 😁👍
🖐️on the Datsun brand name. I drove the crap out of my step dad's 79 Datsun 2wd pickup. Looking at the rear end you can tell where the 240 Z got it's looks. Thanks for traveling to check this car out and letting us ride along with you.
Wow nice car!!!

Fender flares missing! Hope no one stole it!! She needs some LOVE!!! But a beautiful starting point!!
I like malls and old small cars! 😀
I was going to offer you a can opener to get in and out of the car. I remember them well.
😂😂
I had one of these, great little car very economical, only problem, other than the bodywork was the carburettor float being metal, they also used to rot and flood the carb.

I had one of them stock had no power but had no problem with it
Nice car
I've got one of these, mine is a 72 with twin weber sidedrafts
Still have mine 1uz swap underway and my friend has one fully restored bone stock.
Never figured out why they changed the brand name. Tons of them around when I got out of the Army. Lots of little economy cars back then. Thanks
I had a friend who had one of those. He bought it brand new.
When they were on the street I didn't like them, but today looking at it I think ,wow that's pretty cool 😂
One of my first cars was a Datsun 280z
I own one of these with an A14 2 carbs and the 5speed dog leg. So cool to see they aren't extinct.
How do you know there are only 30 left?
My '72 Datsun 1200 Coupe side view mirrors were located on the doors (not fenders) from the factory.
👍👍yes sir pretty cool 😎
wow stock engine 🤯 was expecting to see a shoehorned LS 😁👍
You and me both!
and twin turbos.....at the very least 100shot nitrous
My first car ... frm South Africa... was red Datsun 1200 GX Coupe... came with twin carbs standard ... did 180km/h on clock ... 5 gears .... most other cars in that era only had 4 gears ... bullet proof engine ... not bad for a 1200 ... i notice that engine dont sound too wonderful
Why does it have wheel fairings on all wheel openings except driver's front? Is that a strange racing preference or is it being replaced?
Was being replaced the next day I believe.
Just curious...Looks like the front, driver side fender scoop-trim-accent thing is missing. Is that intentional for some reason or no?
Was being replaced
Use to have a 240Z and took it to gtmo Cuba and there she stayed
WOW. Awesome!! But wtf you doing in Michigan? Lol
This was my first car in 1982
My friend in high school bought one new in 72, he abused the car beyond belief. He had abused a '69 mustang mach 1 before the Datsun. That was the time of the " oil embargo "
I can remember when they were coming into the gas station I worked at and have pumped a few gallons of gas into them. .
I believe later cars were labeled 120 or 130 instead of the full 1200 / 1300 , which became 120 Y or 130Y
30 left?!? That's sad. It's almost as dead as that mall. My local mall is about the same lol.
😂😂
That's what they should do with the old abandoned malls. Make a 24/7 car show. And make it a place where you can sell your car.
Adorable little car❤️
I’d yank it!
I race one in Gymkhana Racing in South Africa. Great cars.
Me just giggling like a school girl love the video
How much for the 1200
Wow! I'm shocked a mall is still open.
And still raced in Japan with ~170HP to this day.
