I've jumped off that tower / platform 10 times. First time was nerve racking but, conquered my fear and kept going back up there. I've had many chiefs and PO's asked me to step off just to show to other recruits that it's nothing. 0.04 seconds is how long it takes from stepping off to hit the water. 05 - 10 seconds just to surface out of the water once you're in.
Y’all please learn how to swim before coming here it was the most stressful thing ever having to go to swim training and missing out on classes and inspection training . It took me about 4 weeks to pass and my boot camp was only 6 weeks
I had some sort of 24 hour sickness on swim-qual day, managed to get to coverall inflation, then threw up. Luckily I didnt throw up in the water, and they let me get back to training. I finished and passed. Then we were about to march back to the ship, and I threw up again. So I had to have a battle buddy go with me to medical. When I got back to my ship and was SIQ, I found out that they just got beat HARD after a drill incident. Lol. I guess I was lucky afterall.
We had to jump off with dungrees and long sleeve shirt. Then take off our dungrees and make floating devices out of them. Seems to me the diving board was a lot higher. 1982 navy bootcamp. Passed everything, by the grace of God. 3rd generation veteran, Indigenous
Once you leave training you can use other glasses but just remember not ALL glasses will be acceptable to wear with uniform. It’s just simpler for the military to have one type of frames and by default one type of lens. I’m not sure about the requirements for secondary classes. I cannot remember which glasses I wore during that period, just that I had access to my civilian glasses again.
in 68 we were told jump into the pool and get to the other side....CO told me to get in the water "xzcsdzc" I ain't seen one of you yet that can swim....so I climbed on the racing platform and after a pretty jack knife swam under water to the other end of the pool. CO was pissed...All right .....get out the pool. Guys told me later he almost jumped in because he thought I was drowning. Fixed his racist attitude real good.
Trevino Corina You place them in your shorts. So when you go to “close your glasses” you take the leg of your glasses and slide it on your waist and if that makes sense.
JXAY. VXIV wow! That’s recent! Thanks for responding bro. I just scene some recent navy videos with people arm stroking with their face up and I was kinda confused!
K Williams they don’t shove you in, the arm on the back it’s just a reassuring pressure. If they feel an increasing resistance they tell you to stop , but they can’t tell without applying that pressure and feeling you pushing against it. The whole point of controlling the speed in which you step off the deck is to make sure you don’t go out too far and risk the safety of the instructors in the water and to make sure you don’t step short or worse lean back and risk hitting your head on the edge of the platform. Remember the whole point of this exercise is to know what to do if you have to jump off a ship and seek shelter in the water. Knowing just how far you have to go to clear both the ship and avoid debris in the water is an important survival skill
Wish we could wear contacts in boot. I couldnt see crap this whole time lol. Some of the best parts of bootcamp, I couldnt see. Swimming, gas chamber, and I think we had to take them off for the SCBAs too but I forget. Everytime I've put on SCBAs since then, I've had contacts. Wish I couldve actually seen the American flag across from me while standing up there. Or at least be able to see how far I was about to fall lol

I remember my division got beat while I was SIQ twice. I just put my hoodie over my head and went to sleep.
One of my RDCs said, "last name, your ass is always broken".
Yep same thing happen to me one day I was siq. Got to watch my division get beat. Fun times!! Lol
The best part of training for me at RTC in 1996.
It took me 6 weeks to pass prone...but that was in '57.

One of my favorite parts of bootcamp
Do they give everybody the same glasses or am I tripping?!?
Yes everyone gets the same BCG’s
Siara Broadston are you required to keep them after rtc or do you get your previous pair?
atleder1 It’s considered your uniform but I am not 100% sure I leave for boot camp on the 17th!

did they lower the platform? i could have sworn it was much higher than that when i went to boot camp in 1999. They had a couple of different heights.
I heard that back in the day, it was 30 feet you had to jump off of, thank god its only 10
9 ft. 10 in.
This shit scary asf but oh well God gonna be with me cause my ass can surely not swim
Me either 😭😭. I can only swim on my back but I think my biggest fear is not coming back up after that jump 😂
