In this video, we’re going to talk about valerian root.
Valerian root is an herb that can help with anxiety. However, it's not a good solution to insomnia.
Valerian root provides benefits similar to valium for symptoms of anxiety but without many of the side effects.
Both valerian root and valium help increase the effects of GABA by blocking GABA receptors. When receptors can’t take in GABA, more of it stays in your nervous system for longer.
Why is this important? GABA is a crucial neurotransmitter that helps reduce stress and support calmness. Those who are deficient in this neurotransmitter tend to experience anxiety and insomnia.
Kimchi helps boost GABA by supporting gut microbes that create neurotransmitters.
Valerian is a sedative-so taking it before bed can produce some unwanted effects, including:
    • Drowsiness
    • Sluggishness
    • Slow heart rate
    • Insomnia
    • Daytime sleepiness
It’s better to get to the root of the problem. Why are you experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, or a low mood?
These can be symptoms of hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances. High cortisol is the primary hormone behind anxiety and sleeping problems. Additionally, poor sleep is associated with low melatonin-and low melatonin related to low serotonin. Those with a serotonin deficiency often experience depression.
It’s important to increase your melatonin, but without taking melatonin supplements. Supplementing any hormone can reduce your body’s natural output that hormone over time.
These are the best ways to support sleep, calmness, and wellbeing naturally:
    1. Increase exercise and physical work
    2. Increase infrared light exposure
    3. Take vitamin B1 (naturally found in nutritional yeast and sunflower seeds)
    4. Support your microbiome with probiotics
    5. Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting

I'm a licensed doctor of naturopathic medicine and this is not a good representation of valerian. It works phenomenally for people who fall asleep but wake up in the night. It is most often non-groggy. When you see grogginess, typically that person was in a sleep deficit and now is experiencing deeper sleep and their body is playing catch up. ~1% of people get the opposite effect. You cannot read a PubMed article and make an accurate assertion on an herb. This is not allopathic medicine where you are working with isolates. There are hundreds of compounds in a whole plant that work synergistically together. This herb is gentle and safe.

If you take L-tryptophan then it'll convert into serotonin and then later(especially with exposure to sunlight) it'll convert into melatonin. Taking a light walk after taking the L-tryptophan and that helps transport it to the brain.

Personally, for me, Valerian has been a Godsend in aiding my mind and body to relax and lull me into a restful sleep and I NEVER have feelings of drowsiness, sluggishness, slow heart rate, insomnia and most importantly no daytime sleepiness." That is something I struggled with for over 10 years while averaging 2-3 hours of sleep per night and never feeling well rested. All that changed for me since taking Valerium powder capsules a few weeks ago. I take 3 at night an hour or two before bed and it truly has helped me sleep 6-8 hours with fewer wakeups in between and I more easily fall back to sleep again. I don't really suffer with anxiety, but it does 100% halt any 'racey thoughts' about life that might go through my mind when I should be trying to get to sleep. It has given me a part of my life back that I had lost over a decade ago and I am glad I discovered it.

This information is more important than people realize. Many purchased tea blends for insomnia contain valerian root, and people buy it because it's been marketed as helpful.
I don't harvest my valerian root but do use the leaves for a mild anti-anxiety effect. It also tastes better than the stinky root.
Here's a blend that my husband and I enjoy in the evening. It's very soothing...
    (1 part=1 teaspoon)
    3 parts dried marshmallow root;
2 parts dried Tulsi (holy basil)
    2 parts dried organic, unsprayed rose petals or buds;
1 part dried cinnamon bark (I use chips)
Combine all in a jar and use 1 or 2 teaspoons per cup.
Boil filtered water, remove from heat and let stand 1 minute before pouring over herbs. Cover and allow to steep 5 minutes. Strain and drink.

Now I use skullcap, passionflower and chamomile and stress it’s for occasional use only! I’ve had people get addicted to Nervines and can only get to sleep with them. Also I have found if you get people to stop looking at their TVs and cell phones at night their problems ( on multiple levels) disappear. Depression doesn't always manifest as sadness. If you have frequent panic/ anxiety attacks, it could be a dual diagnosis. Psychosis, Depression, mania, anxiety, and other mental illness symptoms overlap the same area of the brain. Psychiatrists are coming to the realization that depression occurs on a spectrum, like autism, and no-longer embrace the idea of Bi-Polarity of depressive symptoms.

I use Valerian root tincture for years now whenever I can't sleep. And it works precisely because it helps to reduce anxiety. That's the point. That is the main reason when I can't sleep, anxiety about something or another. And I don't feel "groggy" in the morning at all. And if that's the only fault he can come up with, sorry, that's weak. I think most people who have trouble sleeping would easily exchange a mild temporary grogginess for being able to face the day with a good nights sleep. I'm the same here. I struggle with insomnia times to times, and I take several things before going to bed. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I know that I stay a lot at home in the dark, so I suspect my circadian rhythm must be messed up. I'll try to go out everyday, even only 15min to see the sun. I struggle also with severe allergies at night that provokes respiratory problems and then bad anxiety. And I agree so much with you in the fact that people take insomnia too much lightly. You say "I'm tired", and they are like "oh come on". I use to say "I"m sick" when I just feel too exhausted, but people obviously think it's just a little cold. Oh god....

I bet! Have you tried his videos on b1, enough potassium, enough vitamin D, magnesium, ect?

@@experimenthealthyketo83 Yeah, I take all this, except the potassium but I eat pistachios, if I'm correct, they are full of potassium. Probably the cause is not enough sun as I live like a vampire and maybe exercise... I don' tknow

@@lisehoover ok. Any amounts of pistachios will not give you enough potassium. A healthy active person needs 4700mg of potassium a day. But I agree sun and vitamin D are definitely big factors of health as well. If you be outside, rather than inside most of the day, it would already help. Also cod liver provides 16000Ius of vitamin D. Esquimos eat this.

I can speak to coming off benzodiazepines, thank you for acknowledging their withdrawal effects. It was the worst time of my life. Im interested in trying valerian.

Thank you Dr Berg. Could you also do a video on Magnesium and how it can help with sleep if you have not done so.

He’s made lots of videos on magnesium, even on the different types of magnesium. Possibly easier to find on his website or by asking his staff.

Thank you very much for all of your videos, I am into IF for more than a month now and I see great results. However I am facing some issues with my sleep and I would like to try some near IR light bulbs. Would you suggest a range or a specific peak of the wave length of the light for higher efficiency regarding sleep issues?
