Making a SLEEPING POTION From Fresh VALERIAN

  • Despite the benefits a city can offer, city life can be stressful and polluted with both noise and light, all of which means people are having more trouble sleeping than ever. I used to have insomnia all the time when I lived in the city, and even when over the counter sedatives wouldn't work I found that the gentle effect of a homemade herbal tincture would do the trick.
    I made a valerian, hops, and chamomile tincture blend that served as a great sleeping potion to relax me enough to help me drift off at night. This spring I found a bunch of volunteer valerian growing in my garden so I thought it was time to make some more sleeping potion. I sleep really soundly most nights at Dancing Rabbit, but I figure I can send some of this to friends who live in the city, and it's always good to have some on hand just in case.

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  2 роки тому

      I think the difference is that a lot of medicine from the past was done before the advent of science, and much of it was bunk, like the concept of bleeding people to cure them. Like the doctrine of signatures I mention in the video. This was the belief for hundreds of years, but it was totally wrong. It's alternative medicine because there is a mainstream medicine (with its own problems, but still far better in many ways) that is dominant, so these natural ways are seen as alternatives to them.
      It's probably similar to the term organic being applied to the kind of agriculture that was practiced for thousands of years, which does really annoy me...that you have to be certified to NOT use chemicals and do things the way they were done for thousands of years, but you don't have to be certified to spray all kinds of toxic chemicals on your crops. But to me this is a much more cut and dried better way of doing things than herbal medicine is to mainstream medicine. It might not be as productive in the short term, but it is far more sustainable over the long term.

      @@user-22- It's fine to try natural remedies if they work, but a lot of them haven't been scientifically tested and side effects aren't known.
      I find people in the alternative medicine community by and large lack critical thinking skills. They are skeptical of everything mainstream because they think (rightly so) that it is corrupted by money. But so is alternative medicine. It's no better to charge people a lot of money for alternative cures that don't do anything than it is to charge people lots of money for pharmaceuticals. The difference is that the drug companies at least have to do tests on their drugs to make sure they are safe and effective. Or at least they have to warn you about the side effects of the drugs, that often are like a long laundry list. But at least you are informed.
      When the alternative medical field is full of charlatans selling fake cures because no one questions or even tests the claims made about their efficacy, it loses all credibility in my opinion. If the alternative medical community would fund third party studies on the efficacy of their remedies instead of just saying, "hey this is ancient wisdom", they would have more credibility. They don't do this as far as I can tell. Instead, misinformation is spread from person to person along with what may be real useful medical information. That hasn't stopped scientists from studying some herbal remedies, but there is little funding put into it. If drug companies are required to provide evidence of efficacy and safety of the drugs they produce, at least that bare minimum should be required of alternative medicines. But if that were done, probably 90% of alternative practitioners would be out of business. Instead, alternative medicine practitioners just can't make claims about their "cures" curing anything. Why not just study their cures and make them legitimate medical remedies that have been proven to work? And if they can't do something as simple as prove scientifically that their remedies work, then their motives in selling them to consumers are suspect.
      WebMD is an authoritative source for good medical information. They actually do mention that Valerian has efficacy in helping with sleep but they also say there are not a lot of studies supporting the claims.
      Good luck to you and I hope your natural remedies have been helpful with your health problems.

      I'm not against alternative medicine, but it is not scientifically verified as much as mainstream treatments are. If it doesn't do any harm to someone, even if it's just a placebo effect, I'm fine with it. Unfortunately, anyone can (and does) just make things up and spread them as legitimate treatments, when in reality they may be doing more harm than good. Without testing we can't know the effectiveness and long and short term negative effects. It's important to verify that treatments, alternative or mainstream, actually work, and don't do more harm than good, or give people false hope when they are actually ineffective.
      That's my opinion of alternative medicine. It needs the same scrutiny (but rarely gets it from those who practice it) as pharmaceuticals and mainstream methods do. There are people in alt medicine out there trying to get rich conning the gullible, no different from big pharma. But big pharma at least is required to do some testing before releasing their products on people. Alt medicine is a multibillion dollar industry and it is mostly unregulated.

      The phrase alternative medicine literally means “not medicine”. Something other than medicine. Alternative to using medicine.
      Either it’s medicine at the right dose or it’s not. Many plants are medicine. Many plants are not medicine and therefore alternative medicine.

    My Dad said skull cap is stronger then valerian. Valerian makes me feel super tired much more so than melatonin definitely works in my experience. St. Johnswort made me tired too.. L-Theanine is more relaxing then tiring. Kinda reminded me of a weaker non euphoric Benzo.. Definitely not as strong. I have really bad PTSD and have struggled with addiction and still struggle with benzodiazepine use. If your having a panic attack it definitely won't work. Probably would if you caught it early. (Right when you start feeling slightly over whelmed) but is great for insomnia slight social anxiety and basic every day GAD.. My bodies pretty hard core so I have a cocktail I use when not trying to take benzos. 75mgs of Benadryl 6mgs of melatonin and 400mgs of L-Theanine.. if I want extra sedation I take a couple home filled capsules of valerian root from the health food store. I don't suggest you take anywhere near what I do. My body is use to it, would probably induce seratonin syndrome in most.. Peace and love everyone!

      Do you know why dry mushrooms people eat and not raw?
      and you harvest roots in the autumn because that way all valuable "juice" from the plant are stored in to roots.
      You wait until plant "die" and then take roots . then you dry them (I don't know why) just follow protocol if you change anything then you can't have guaranty for the same result . Specially if we don't realy understand why ? so at least we follow protocol in order to get same result.

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  5 років тому +3

      @@anabelcamacho6584 In fact, you lose a lot when you dry plants. There are many compounds that are volatile and will float away in the air in the drying process. They will do this in the tincture process as well but they will have time to make contact with the alcohol and bind with it because alcohol is volatile as well. Many of these are the compounds that make valerian so aromatic and have the desired medicinal effect.
      Is it possible that you do something that's been passed down without question for many years and isn't backed up by evidence? You say you don't even know why you do it.
      I guess it's possible that the drying might be necessary to get rid of the volatile compounds (if they are not the active ingredient), and concentrate the active ingredient so that you get more of it. Drying definitely changes plants a lot. Dried cilantro tastes like nothing. But other herbs, like mints, retain their potency. I find that my potion works well the way I make it.

    • @HardcoreSustainable

      @@anabelcamacho6584 I did find some information on ancient use of the roots in Britain that was saying the volatile oil changes during the drying process and give the medicine its "potent, disagreeable smell". But they also say the fresh root has no odor, which doesn't fit my experience at all. The fresh roots I grow smell really strong as I talk about in the video, and they make a tincture that smells the same. I will have to try them dried sometime and see if there is a significant difference in the smell of the roots, and the tincture.
      I think it's possible most recipes I find use dried root because that is what is most easily available to most people, and a lot of people don't like to grow their own, just like they don't grow their own food. But I have found lots of recipes with fresh valerian. That's the recipe I followed many years ago when I first made this tincture.

      You take 10 drops of tincture. That is unlikely to be enough to make you sleep. A shot of vodka contains 887 drops. So the dose for this tincture is about 1% of the effect of a shot. Not much and not enough to make you sleepy. Alcohol is a stimulant, and so it's not good to drink to help you sleep. It makes you restless and your sleep won't be restful.

      I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure you lose a lot in the drying process. All the volatile compounds will float away, and I would think you'd want those. I think people use dried herbs largely because they are so disconnected from the land they buy all their herbs, and they are only sold dried. I suppose it's possible that because they are dried and take up less space, you could get more of them in a given amount of alcohol, and then you'd be getting potentially more stuff in your tincture.
