Pretty hard to find 2 cars. Any gt86 in decent shape is going to cost over 25k these days also. I've been trying to find a gt86 hatchback for the last couple years with not much luck.
What kept bugging me when i looked at the old car is that they spent all that money and time on it and didn't spend $20 and half an hour on a headlight restoration kit 😂
I actually appreciate the new Subi still having keys. So many of my circle have had issues with their fobs and buttons that leave them dead in the water. Sometimes mechanical and simple is better.

I do like the key for the base model. It makes it more inconvenient for people to steal when compared to keyless. For me it was the lack of steering feedback on the new WRX that I didn't like. Great comparison though!
It's about the same to steal a push start, look up relay attacks, in laymans terms thiefs use a signal booster/relay to boost key signals to the car (ussually when it's parked outside a house) and then once it's started they can drive so far without the key and then strip it or load it on a trailer wherever they want. With a key they have to pick the door lock (or smash a window), then pick or smash the ignition, and most cars also have rfid in the keys so if the ignition doesn't sense the rfid in the key it toggles the security system and locks out the ignition for 5-10 minutes
"The amount of trouble and money I will go through to get little bit of attention from another boy is insane" needs ti be in a sticker and Tshirt combo
I really like this, they didn’t really hold back negative opinions on the newer wrx, they were real. We need people out there telling the car industry what the people want.
i agree, I have the new one and as many negative reviews as there are, it really is a great car. Looks can be fixed, but aside from that everything is pretty solid
What people "want" versus what they'll actually buy are entirely different things. Talk is cheap and unfortunately car people talk a lot. Car buyers don't have the slightest concept of what it takes to bring a car to market, let alone for enthusiasts models. Sure, the people that want the badass versions will buy them, but there's only so many of those people out there. Once the initial run gets bought up, then they stop selling because the actual buyers already have them. So now the manufacturer has a bunch of cars that won't sell until the next major round of changes. It's a losing business model, which is why the cars that "everyone wants", don't really get built, except in limited numbers and with a high price tag. You want more badass cars, talk with your wallet and there'd be more options.
Definitely goes to show how much the exhaust sounds can make or break your driving experience. A decent nameless cat back or Invidia exhaust on the new Rex would probably enhance the fun factor by a huge amount. I have a 2016 Forester XT, and as fast as it was, it was just too quiet compared to my 13 Impreza with a Borla exhaust. Bolting on a Nameless kit made it so much more fun to drive on a daily basis. A quiet exhaust is like going through life without music. Not as critical as water or food, but it definitely enhances the experience so much with a soundtrack!
Cold starting the vb is a treasure. Can't wait to downpipe with a single exit. It's gonna be LOUD. The 2.4l boxer sounds great, just needs its muzzle removed ;)
@@Suileron Convenience is almost always the enemy of security. Keyless entry and push button start are definitely convenient, but make cars much easier to break into and steal, especially if your car doesn't have an immobilizer.
Not to mention the 06 WRX is till running about $15,000 to $25,000 for one that won’t need a new engine and tranny rebuild within the first month. A new WRX is going to give you a good base for future mods when you finally pay it off. One will make a good daily driver, the other is more of a play car that may be in the shop more than the road.
These VB WRXs make MASSIVE gains with a tune and intake. Mine made 326whp/378 torque on a mustang dyno, with an ETS intake and a 93 protune. Huge difference and the car is a blast. The best thing is when i drive it I dont have to look at it 😂
Yeah I was gonna say. The manuals are detuned for the cvt models, so just a tune can see some big gains. Yeah the old wrx is more engaging etc but for a new car, the wrx is really good value for what you get.
@@liquidsweg4858 ngl, the looks grown on me a lot. Especially in black or the sapphire blue, some window tint. Wheels/coilovers if you want a bit more. Can be a very good looking car imo.
@@Zigz15 My theory is they left a ton on the table for a STI model, I think they were going to use the same engine, remapped and added the trans, axles and brakes etc.
Call me crazy but having a key is on of my favorite parts of starting up a car. Its a physical and great sensation to turn the key after wrenching on an engine for hours and hear it turn over and run. Sadly it seems like a truly active and engaging experience is becoming more and more difficult. The manuals are disappearing, rwd is disappearing, and the amount of thing i want to do but cant because California laws + us import laws is just depressing.
The new wrx has pretty huge gains from just an intake, exhaust & E30. Dollar for dollar, high car is ahead but the new wrx with just a couple mods doesn't cost much more. Sick vid!
To those concerned, the top trim GT is the only one without a manual, and there are a variety of other trims with good equipment in between what they tested and that.
Yeah I payed a little over 30k out the door for a premium which has heated seats and mirrors, the bigger infotainment screen etc. There's also the limited with more features.
This. The Premium is probably the best value and the Limited trim comes with a manual, nicer seats, a better sound system, etc. Idk what Subaru was thinking with the GT though. Who wants a scooter transmission in a sport sedan?
@@theviolator23 Subaru's Premium trim is the sweet spot of value and features on all of their cars. The Limited is nice if you want a better radio and leather seats without getting too expensive. Restricting all the good performance bits to the CVT was a huge misstep.
One of the biggest differences is the new one is 30k up front. The old one (for most people) is 30k over years with friends helping build it. I like brand new cars but my older modified cars are just fun for me, kids or teens or even young adults love them etc. New cars are bland as you pointed out.
I mean to play devils advocate, the new can also be spread out over years, with smaller payments than the cost of any aftermarket parts. But yea its a lot funner to build it up over time!
After owning my 22 WRX for a year and a half now can confirm car is fun. Have some light mods with a catback and other misc stuff and just doing the catback livens up the car a lot. The car with the plastic def doesn't look as good as the old ones, but if you look at AFD's wrx it looks amazing. Coming from my bugeye to this the turbo lag is pretty much non existent in the 22 and man at least at autocross the thing is a monster. Having people who own other WRX's drive it say they love the car. Give the car a chance looks arent everything cause you can change it with after market parts which is what we do anyway! Can't wait to start getting some more mods for mine!
And to add from that as an owner of one too when you do downpipe top mount, e50, second cat delete and intake it is super amazing and fun to drive and you don’t have to spend 10k to get to 500 hp ( mine is super fun with those mods and best part is you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get to this horsepower ☺️) and it has a stupid amount of torque 🤣
I’ve got a black VB, upgraded to a catback exhaust and upgraded suspension to coilovers. This thing sounds and drives amazing now. People are making 350 to the wheels with just an intake and a tune. The VB is a great chassis.
I need someone to clip our James quote at 9:55 "the amount of trouble and money I will go through, just to get a little bit of attention from another boy is insane"
They should take the new WRX and slowly add parts/tune to see how little it takes to become faster than the old Hi Car. For example an Access Port and Drunkmann ots tune alone might make it faster. Add in coilovers and it would be insanely close after those two enhancements alone.
@PhilSnipaWRX people hate on the looks but from what I've seen so far in the realm of tuning, the VB chassis is just worlds better than the previous WRX's
I have a 2017, and yea it's ok. Good for everyday use that you can push and have some fun in. I don't have space for a 2nd car, or the time to fiddle with one, so a new WRX was a good compromise car for me. Also the AWD allows me to get to work in the snow.
@@manz7860 new mustang/camaros are garbage cars. They look bad, they sound like a joke version of what they should sound like, and they drive like trash. It's amazing how loud they managed to make an automatic v6.
@CRneu calling New Mustangs and Camaros "garbage cars" sounds like you're trying to be an edgy kid who probably either doesn't have their license or drives a Civic. Have you heard the new Dark Horse Mustang? Probably not since you are trying to so hard to be cool by being negative on the internet.
I bought a 2002 WRX in Arizona in late 2001, one of the first to be sold in the state. I drove it for the next 18 years, and went through big modification phases, ultimately at over 440whp on 91 pump gas. Some of my best driving experiences ever, and a huge chunk of my lifetime. Yet Subaru is dead to me now, which makes me very sad. The Toyota influence, the stubborn refusal to evolve the cars, the disgusting imposition of the CVT, the loss of the STi and the prestige and presence that came with it, the abandonment of competitive rally racing... it's just another appliance now, a Toyota mind-numbing factory product from salarymen and bureaucrats.
A VB WRX is my first WRX, coming from a RWD XR6 Turbo with nearly 400kW at the wheels and although it's obviously not as fast in a straight line the VB is a way more fun car to drive. Definitely needed an Invidia cat back so you can hear when to change gears !!
This was awesome. I own a heavily modded VA wrx and a bone stock VB both premium trim and i can tell you straight out of the box the VB is the best wrx ever made. And it has the most potential. The FA motors are really stout being that they were co developed between Subaru Toyota and Yamaha and there are examples of fa24 VB wrx making 600+ hp with a stock motor. I myself with my Fa20 have been making 400whp on my Fa20 in my VA for 4 years with no issues.
@rustler08 its only impressive when a small displacement 4 banger engine can reliably produce that much power, AND the peak horsepower is usable and not just at redline. 400HP from a V8 isn’t impressive anymore.
@@rustler08 I mean it's my daily and it's a 4banger making almost double the power it was making from the factory on stock turbo and internals reliably. I'd say for what it is it's pretty impressive. I've definitely impressed a few guys in cars with higher hp that I've raced.
@@ericmojo9192 I don’t think so when the new WRX would need very little work to get the same performance at a higher reliability. Whereas the old one has needed multiple motors and is constantly having issues. Don’t get me wrong I love older project cars I’m looking to get into one myself, I just think this comparison was bad seeing they dumped 30k in the old WRX just for it to barely be better.
I own the most fully loaded 2022 WRX with a Manual Transmission that I could buy. It does have the push button start and the big screen and suede everywhere possible. Being that I used to drive a 2007 Saturn Aura before I bought the WRX, it is quite the upgrade for me. I have soooo much fun driving it. I know it is not a super modified car like your Orange one, but I can still drive it hard and fast, and if something breaks, it is covered under warranty and I don't have to spend many hours fixing it. I get the appeal of modifying a vehicle if you have the time and expertise to work on it, but when I have work 50-60 hours per week and spend the rest of my wife and kids, a stock new WRX is a very fun vehicle to drive. Unfortunately, my wife enjoys driving the WRX too. So she plans on taking it from me once I buy my new car, which will be a 2016 Focus RS.
@@PsunnProductions”because someone said so” I raced 3 different stock VBs in my STI and beat them. You read on the internet while some have actual experience 😂
For me, you cant beat reliability. Imagine you're working all week, looking forward to the track, finally get there on the weekend, and you break down and gotta tow it home, AND get it back together by monday morning. The middle way is better to me. Late-model used, moderate mods. OR mod the shit out of a track car that is NOT the daily driver. That is the way, really. And if you were truly gonna rebuild the whole damn thing, you dont HAVE to start with a WRX, you could use any impreza or whatever you like.
Had to make this same decision recently, should I get a new factory wrx or an older model with mods. I ended up choosing the 2013 hatch with an exhaust + tune and couldn’t be happier with my decision. The older WRXs have so much more character
Took a 97 Impreza with 250k miles on a road trip with no issues. 5000 miles in 12 days and hit Pikes peak, did a track day, and routinely cruising at 80 mph. Only issue was added some oil after the track day. It's been modified heavily and I trusted it completely to not break down doing all that. It comes down to the owner and keeping up with proper maintenance for the most part. Great comparison video though, and I would personally take the old modified car 10/10 over a new car.
E85 is mostly ethanol (85%) and modified engines can be harder to start with it - especially on colder days. In Brazil, where I live, most road cars are flex fuel and many of them have a small gasoline tank under the hood that helps on the cold start. Not sure if this is a common thing elsewhere or something adapted for this market. By the way, when ethanol was first introduced here, most cars still used carburetors. Ethanol engines were notoriously difficult to start - you had to pull the “choke” to momentarily get more fuel into the chamber, say a prayer, and trust it would start in less than five attempts.
Every time yall show a gas station, it makes me feel a little better about what I pay for gas in Texas. Less than half of what you guys do, and I still think prices are ridiculous 😂
I got the 23 Premium and it was WAY worth the extra money. Got the push button start, sti short throw, heated seats, sunroof and the harmon karden sound system. It's too bad the base couldn't come with at least the push button though lol. I think my seats are different too than what they had here. I have pretty beefy bolsters on mine. I was just chucking in around pikes peak this weekend and I was glued in place.
The seats are one of the premium perks, and in Canada the top trim even comes in standard :D also Canada gets them shipped directly from Japan, whereas in the USA they are made domestically and to lower quality.
My favorite part of this video was hearing M.Bison say " Yes!!" at the end. Great video overall, glad that the new WRX still can't hang with the modded hawkeye
In Canada we get the sport tech package, it's the full trim package but comes in standard. The stock gen 5 wrx out performs stock gen 4 sti, with a much more robust base to push performance. You add 3k of mods to the vb and it will turn just as many heads as your full build. Or, 5k to upgrade Intake, straight piped, and tuned it will take the trophy every time.
I'd love to see the comparison of you put better disks and racing tyres on the new WRX, as was said, you'd probably be right there, and for not a massive uptick in cost.
@jmoor58 The MAXX GT 600A are not all that great of tires. They are quite expensive and don’t really compete with the Michelin’s at the same price point. Personally I found my Dunlop’s to have lost a significant amount of grip after only 2000-3000 miles on the car. Also the stock Dunlop Sport MAXX GT 600A have really poor rain performance, and it it easy to get them to hydroplane. I have ~11k on my 2022 WRX limited, all on stock Dunlop tires. I personally don’t like the stock tires and am hoping to replace them soon.
@@markm1212 I have a 2022 also and I agree they're not at all what I would pick for a stock tire but in the conditions they were in they probably performed really well
MK7 for the easy win. I have owned MK 1-7 except #5. 4 is the worst. 1 and 2 are a hoot but underpowered by modern standards. I was going to upgrade my 7 to an eight, but the interior on the 8 stinks. Needs real buttons and the non digital dash IMO. I don't plan on ever getting rid of my MK7, it is a nearly perfect daily.
I grew up with VW, my first and my current car have both been GTI's (Mk5 and now mk4). My ranking is: 1: Mk4, it's cheap, iconic, modable, and looks great 2: Mk7, amazing performance with a clean interior to match 3: Mk2, you can do ANYTHING to this car 4: Mk6, it's kinda just a slightly slower Mk7, it's meh 5: Mk1, it's the original sure, but good luck getting them to work longer than a week 6: Mk8, it looks CLEAN on the outside, but inside it's plain with a fat screen in the middle 7: Mk5, it looks alright, but they put biodegradable wires and that's just a terrible idea 8: Mk3, probably the most unreliable option on the list, unlike the Mk1 it's not nearly as noticeable on the road since it's kinda the dullest looking one imo Still all nice ass cars that I recommend to people who want an older sporty hatchback that stands out from the JDM's!
@@HaHaThatIsFunny I second this! I've got a 2015 MK7 and even though it's bone stock I absolutely LOVE my car. Personally, I dont think the new wrx deserves all the hate. The jump to 2.4l makes it a lot closer to an sti compared to the va base wrx and its way more efficient than an STI. Also since so many people hate it, its a lot cheaper to get
Lol I have a VB wrx and it being more efficient than an sti is a really low bar. The car is perfect otherwise but the 19mpg i get while babying it is baffling
Honest guys, i bought an 07 base model 5speed for a daily driver, proceeded to ABSOLUTELY FALL IN LOVE with it driving in the first real snow and i'll be watching the whole series high car low car on these just to get some ideas. I'm a muscle car type, i have the firing order to every v8 chevy built between like 58 and 99 tattooed to my knuckles. i have no idea what im doing but i have an empty engine stand and a desire to go fast. thanks for putting this out there!
Me and my brother both have VBs and they are a blast. They sound pretty good with a catback and there's plenty you can do with the appearance. As far as power goes, there's more potential with the fa24. Mine has a an ets catbac exhaust,f1 light and gold rpf1s with a 265/35r18 conti. Also put on a duck bill and tinted the windows. Oh and I pulled out the charcoal filter because california regulations SUUUCK. Look at those criminal gas prices! I rarely pay more than $4 for 93. (Yeah we have 93 over here lol)
$2.89 reg unleaded $3.89 Ethanol free California slowly vilifying & banning I.C.E vehicles with extreme prejudice. Pushing their agenda & their "Earth friendly, cleaner, safer, better, 0 carbon footprint & 0 carbon creating causing" EV's. Those EV's are made using rubber & oil. Exterior, interior uses engine oil filters & coolant to cool you compooters & several thousand lbs batteries. That weight requires specific & specialized tires. Again, using more oil. 🤣😂🤣😂😂
So I have the TR with the upgraded STI axle back exhaust, big brembo brakes which come stock on the TR, upgraded spoiler, short throw shifter, STI front lip, side skirts, and rear diffuser. And although the exhaust probably adds very little to no power if I had to guess since there's nothing official I can find on it, it's definitely not quiet or boring. The steering is a bit better than the lower trims but still very light which I'm not a fan of. My 2014 Mini Cooper S in sport mode has way better steering, but it's not all wheel drive. The psi for the VB turbo is rated at 11 psi, but I got mine to 12.6, so I don't know if they retuned it for the TR. All in all, solid comparison on the new base WRX to the 2006 Hawkeye with $30k in mods. But once you start modding these VB's it's day and night. They don't look boring, and just adding the STI exhaust from Subaru gives it life. I test drove the Base, Limited, and GT, and out of all of them the GT is the most boring. That cvt is straight garbage, and the fact that they only offer the adjustable dampers and drive modes on it, and not even on the TR is so dumb. Anyways, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
As a happy 2022 wrx owner, I gotta disagree with 1 major point. No one “at work” is interested in high car. Unless you work entirely with hardcore car people. There are lots of old, built, Japanese cars running around and 99% of people find no prestige in them.
Also one of the Subaru engineers at our track event explained why the new VB wrx handles so poorly is because it's the first WRX ever to be built on their SUV based global platform, thus using the SUV's open front diff and open rear diff, no LSD, instead using the SUV's electronic braking vectoring. Brightside though is it's comfortable like a SUV.
It's not the first gen with open diffs an it handles better than the last gen cause the body is 40% stiffer your comparing sti to wrx not wrx to wrx lol
I fixed up an old truck one time. I couldn’t have been prouder of it if it hit a home run in little league. If you are a capable person, I highly recommend getting a nice old whatever you want- be picky, it’s a lot of work- and fix that old gal up. Old cars have personality.

I do like the key for the base model. It makes it more inconvenient for people to steal when compared to keyless. For me it was the lack of steering feedback on the new WRX that I didn't like. Great comparison though!
Uhh its much more difficult to steal a car with push start
And less expensive if anything were to happen too they cram so much electronics and replacement parts aren't cheap
@@jdmrules007also can be usable on some used cars.
@@theaman1676no it isnt. All you need is a key signal reader

I really like this, they didn’t really hold back negative opinions on the newer wrx, they were real. We need people out there telling the car industry what the people want.
i agree, I have the new one and as many negative reviews as there are, it really is a great car. Looks can be fixed, but aside from that everything is pretty solid
Just watch Jason Cammisa for the truth in auto journalism.
I assure you, nobody is clicking on your spam.
What 'people' want and what enthusiasts want are two very different things.

The best thing is when i drive it I dont have to look at it 😂
Don’t blame you, thing is ugly as hell.
Yeah I was gonna say. The manuals are detuned for the cvt models, so just a tune can see some big gains. Yeah the old wrx is more engaging etc but for a new car, the wrx is really good value for what you get.

I got the premium and it's perfect. Not too expensive and not too decked out
@@theviolator23 Subaru's Premium trim is the sweet spot of value and features on all of their cars. The Limited is nice if you want a better radio and leather seats without getting too expensive. Restricting all the good performance bits to the CVT was a huge misstep.
I got the premium with the sunroof/hk audio system. Couldn’t be happier with it.
Do us all a favor donut brothers, give those headlights some restoration.
The old WRX still is very fun to ride tho.
And after 20 years of owning it, you can dump another 20k in mods in it to make it as fast at the 2042 WRX

I bought a 2002 WRX in Arizona in late 2001, one of the first to be sold in the state.

Is 400whp supposed to be impressive? Because it's really not.

For me, you cant beat reliability.
I have never seen Jeremiah so intensely focused in my years of watching donut.
Had to make this same decision recently, should I get a new factory wrx or an older model with mods. I ended up choosing the 2013 hatch with an exhaust + tune and couldn’t be happier with my decision. The older WRXs have so much more character
Unless you got a built engine, probably not a good decision

Oh and I pulled out the charcoal filter because california regulations SUUUCK. Look at those criminal gas prices! I rarely pay more than $4 for 93. (Yeah we have 93 over here lol)
$6 a gallon for gas? I’ll shut up about our $3.60 in Illinois
$2.89 reg unleaded
$3.89 Ethanol free
California slowly vilifying & banning I.C.E vehicles with extreme prejudice. Pushing their agenda & their "Earth friendly, cleaner, safer, better, 0 carbon footprint & 0 carbon creating causing" EV's.
Those EV's are made using rubber & oil. Exterior, interior
uses engine oil filters & coolant to cool you compooters & several thousand lbs batteries. That weight requires specific & specialized tires.
Again, using more oil. 🤣😂🤣😂😂
6.59 for regular 87 is crazy!
And how many of the 06 wrx’s did you go through trying to get one that still runs? Love you guys keep it up 😂
I love the classic Wrx's but I personally really like the new ones, especially with paint matched flares, I want one baddly.
No way you like the new gen it’s so ugly
@@joshdominguez341subjective opinion bro. The vb looks dope.
I see Jobe rocking a Seiko SKX, classy choice.
Great watch!
It’s the 5 sports GMT. Lovely upgrade on the old SKX.
As a happy 2022 wrx owner, I gotta disagree with 1 major point.
No one “at work” is interested in high car. Unless you work entirely with hardcore car people. There are lots of old, built, Japanese cars running around and 99% of people find no prestige in them.
I agree but I don’t think that’s the point.
i really like this video, which shows a lot about what a brand new car offers and what you can do with the good old ones
Great job guys!
It's not the first gen with open diffs an it handles better than the last gen cause the body is 40% stiffer your comparing sti to wrx not wrx to wrx lol
this is me t.i. this is what i love about the donut channel. the price on the car is legit.
I just really like the sleeper car approach. I reckon it's all about NOT drawing attention to yourself just from the way it looks
Leggoooo! More videos like this please 🙏
I fixed up an old truck one time. I couldn’t have been prouder of it if it hit a home run in little league. If you are a capable person, I highly recommend getting a nice old whatever you want- be picky, it’s a lot of work- and fix that old gal up. Old cars have personality.
You can obviously restomod an old car and make it just as good & reliable as a new car if done right.
These new WRX's make some really good power with just e85 & tune. You guys should perform the aforementioned mods & have a rematch.
Same theory is hot lap them the new WRX will have more brake fade I like my 2012 WRX way more than the new one though
I like the key start much more than a push button
Well, ok, I kinda like that the new WRX is still keeping true to being fast even with some added comfort.
It looks like regular traffic from the 10s ngl
@@wackoterp7026Good. I'm tired of getting tickets.
