  • After searching, this method wasn't shown so I want to pass it on. Worked perfectly, no mods to fuel required. Parts came to $18 at Canadian tire, $10 for the bits and $7 for the extension and tax. In the video I said it was 1/3 louder when its about 2 times louder but still 1/2 the volume of my Vance and Hines 2 into 1. A perfect comprimise. I recomend you try it first then if not loud enough, take the baffle out.

Thank you for the post. I just did this to my wifes bike and it sounds great. I almost got cut off in a parking lot. One quick rev and the car jerked to a stop. I love the sound and the price is nice.

I drilled 3/4 inch holes in the baffle on my 04 sportster 1200 using this same method. It sounds pretty good! I made a video with the sound so you can hear it.

Hi Thanks for the video. Little feedback. Machinery Handbook specifically said not to use 3-1 oil for cutting, drilling and tapping operations. You should use a Sulphur based oil. That's why thread cutting oil smells like sulphur. They even recommend lard as an alternative if you don't have cutting oil. Thats also what makes some stainless steels machinable and others not so much; a higher sulphur content.

Sadly the bike has been returned to the original owner. I've read the comments and the reason I used the tapered bits is that I could stop and test the sound at different hole sizes, I didn't want it too loud. As one commenter was offended by any noise, I can assure him it wasn't too loud. We like enough sound to be noticed but not enough to scare people. This mod is perfect and makes the bike sound like it should. As far as the view that loud pipes don't save lives, I have been riding for 32 years and will swear in court that it does! Do you always believe what other people tell you?

you should most definitely take the mufflers off, and clean the inside out for metal shavings made by drilling, exhaust isnt just gasses going out, while throttle is decreasing (deceleration) a vacuum is created and metal shavings could potentially (but not definitely) be sucked into the engine... just a caution from an auto mechanic and Harley owner. deff agree about using oil to drill, it also will decrease the temp the metal you are drilling therefor decreasing metal fatigue and distortion.

+InDaJeep4x4 I not too sure but I thought that when the piston is down, it's either in the intake mode or explosion mode. In these cases nothing can get into the cylinder head from the exhaust side

I used a 1/4 inch metal 12" drill bit and gently hammered it through ran it and though it sounded much better, I then used a 1'2 inch size drill bit and again hammered it through. I gotta say it's is way better and sounded really nice and deep. I am happy with it. I bought an 05 softail efi.

What do you mean Pointless??? Its an excellent way for an average DIY'er to mod his bike to make it sound better. The only tool needed is a hand drill and 10 minutes of work. I didn't post audio clips as it's useless, I can't tell one clip from another when judging mufflers on UA-cam and posting DB levels is useless too as most don't know the difference between 85 and 90 db. It works, it's cheap, it's easy and worth it.

Good video, I used a 1 1/4 hole saw. Worked like a charm. I too, was considering the entire baffle removed. Glad I didn’t, sounds just right for me.

Nice bike! Thanks for sharing, I drill mine the same way using step drills works best.

Weird thing is that I did exactly this today and did.a search to find out whether someone else also does it thus way. Only difference is that my pipes were off, as I had a really loud custom pipe made. I like this drilled restrictor better.

Thanks and nice job explaining the tools and process! Can you maybe post a video of the bike sound after this mod? I want to try this mod first before dropping a grand at the dealership for stage-1 upgrade on my '08 Sportster 1200 Custom.

I wish I would have found your video before I tried to do my mod. This seems to be the best way to mod tapered pipes. I took mine off and attempted to mod as if they were straight pipes. Did not work. I'm going to use this method.

Looks easy enough but it's pretty easy to take off the slip-ons and then you aren't leaving all the drill shavings in your pipes. Just my opinion, thanks for the video

  • @jaybobuckner1

should've used a hole saw the size of the inside diameter of the pipe. Then just pull the baffles out without removing the pipes. Easiest way to do it.

Not in this instance. Your drilling out the end. You may be able to install some sort of a plug where you drilled the hole if needed.
