"We almost died," recounts one Nigeria-born woman, trapped in a Libyan migrant camp after a failed attempt to cross the Mediterranean to Italy.
The north African nation is effectively a failed state, the product of a brutal civil w*r between rival factions - with so-called Islamic State taking a role in the conflict. it's also a stopping point for people hoping for a better life in prosperous Europe.
Thousands of people call the camp home.

EL Nima Bagir of CNN did a documentary on this, she came to Nigeria and followed the trail from Benin to Libya to Europe. It's a sad story, our young men were kept in iron cages while detained in Libya, the Federal government worked with the International organisation for migration IOM to fly them back from Libya. If anyone can spend thousands of dollars to pay smugglers for this trip, it would have been better to use that money to start a small business back home. The Nigerian government has been bringing some of them home, we must bear in mind that some of them borrowed the thousands of dollars from loan sharks and do not know how to face them, secondly, the shame they will face upon returning empty handed. The Edo state government has been campaigning against sex trafficking but no matter what they do, people will still go because they see others who have gone building houses back home , they think it is easy. Family members will be comparing them to others who have gone abroad and built houses without realising the 'story' behind the houses. A of Nigerians are gullible when it comes to religion, politics and quick wealth.
You have another category who are educated and desperate to live abroad. I had a friend who in 2000 was desperate to live abroad, he is a chartered accountant with an MBA. He said someone arranged a US visa for him, he sold everything he had and left despite our warnings. 2 months later, he called that he was back in Nigeria and wanted too see me. Lol and behold, his story unfolded. He said at the passport control in counter in Lagos, the immigration officer looked at his visa curiously and started asking questions but another officer jumped in amd said 'he was alhaja's candidate' ,he boarded his flight and on arriving in the US, it was discovered that his visa was counterfeit! I asked him how he got the visa,he said he paid N900k for the visa,he didn't appear at the embassy. The US immigration gave him 2 options, to be arrested, prosecuted and jailed in the US or board the next available flight back to Lagos. He opted to return home. He was lucky that back in 2000,things were a lot better but he had to start from the scratch again at age 40.

Ada Ogbeyi what a story. Ironically I know of many educated and employed folks based in Lagos who are willing to throw everything away for a chance at life in USA or Canada. They are blaming Buhari regime. My advise has always been do it the right way (visa process) but they no wan hear word.

@@obieWanmotivation oh yes, they do not appreciate what they have in Nigeria until they go abroad and discover that life is hard in the western world. There are a lot of opportunities on the African continent, the western world is investing in Africa now, unfortunately we Africans do not see what others see.

Many Nigerians who live in Nigeria always think abroad is milk and honey without knowing that for you to make it in the abroad you have to work hard double than in Nigeria. I know a couple that makes 700,000 Naira monthly as salary, but abandoned everything and went to start life afresh in US. Now they are doing very poor jobs in America. The only difference between abroad and Nigeria is just 24hrs electricity and good roads. Good hospitals, security and others will come the moment we have 24hrs electricity.

If more Africans abroad speak about their plights to attain what they have, Africans at home will have a realistic image of life abroad to make a well-informed decision about relocating there.

Stay away from the Arabic countries. They will enslave you. Women from India and Pakistan have been locked up by their "employers", their passports taken, and given no money. They are expected to work Dawn till Dusk, and they are beaten. If they do make a complaint they are not believed. Migrant workers building the football stadia in Qatar have died, and they have their documents taken, and are not paid. Stay home for goodness' sake. Work hard at home and build yourself up. Support your local businesses and people. Do not seek riches elsewhere. There is no point. The world is coming to Africa because there isn't much left to exploit elsewhere. A harsh truth, but one needs to be said. They are looking for resources and workers there because the Chinese no longer want to work all hours that God sends for 150 USD a month in the dirty manufacturing jobs. The Chinese government are cash rich and will do what helps them to make more money. They will not see you as equals, but as an opportunity to be exploited. But, as my father used to say "There's nothing better in John's Shop" right now. Wise people can benefit from this if they are sensitive and mindful to challenges this influx represents. Culturally and economically it will not be easy. Yes, money talks but, everything has a price. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Tread carefully, and pay attention to your own elites. Get them to ensure that the benefits come down the line. Jobs, infrastructure, and education need to be invested in and developed. Your environment needs to be cared for too. Right now, the African people need to start thinking for themselves and learning fast in order to have sustainable growth and development, and not repeat the same mistakes from the post colonial period. Good luck and Peace to all.

My brother it is really depressing. As we speak, human being is being sold at the cost of $400 in Libya especially those who are trying to get to Europe through Libya. A lot of people have sold their property and borrowed millions hoping for a BETTER LIFE only to be landed in the worst situation.
There is nothing wrong looking for a better life. But you need to watch your mouth before they tell you you want to hinder their PROGRESS and SUCCESS in life.
Remember, there is a limitation to what incompetent and corrupt Nigerian government can do considering there is no "government" in Libya. Also, most of the victims would prefer to die in Libya than to return home. It is painful experience but sad sorry story.
Those who have ears should listen ....

Phankleen my brother, you are 100% on your analysis of the ever-growing problem of lots of Africans dying in Sahara desert of thirst sometimes due the the traffickers pick up vehicles breaking down on the way from Niger to Libya a lot of times with many migrants especially from West African countries on board these desert crossing vehicles. Also many migrants die in the desert having fallen from the pick up hilux vehicles, whose drivers don't stop when a passenger accidentally falls from the vehicle. The migrants who are lucky to survive the terrible experience in the desert are substantially faced with part two of the travelling ordeal ie some of them are kidnapped by kidnapping gangs in Libya and are tortured and made to call their families in Africa or Nigeria to send money in order to secure their release which could run into thousands. Also if they are unable to get money from these migrants, the Libya kidnapping gangsters sell onto other gangs for money or make them work in farms and fields for free. The ladies among them are sometimes raped or made to do prostitution. Finally, the migrants who survive the first two ordeals ie the desert and in-humane treatment in Libya, now face the final ordeal, the most risky of all ie crossing the huge Mediterranean Sea with little balloon boats. This is where majority of migrants loose their lives from these little boats capsizing in middle of the Sea, or the boat developing a puncture with disastrous consequences, running out of fuel or the sea navigation compass developing a fault resulting been lost at sea. All these result in deaths at sea. The lucky ones ones get rescued at sea by the Italian or other European vessels. The main problem like you said is that many people are lied in Africa on how easy the route is from Africa to Libya, then Italy. Only when they embark on the trip do they realise their mistakes. You made this video in 2019. Unfortunately 5 years later, migrants are still dying in the Mediterranean

The self hate amongst africans is really deep rooted and something that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. It is soo sad how africans genuinely hate being in Africa. They are willing to do anything to move to Europe at any cost even if it means them going out there and doing degrading jobs so long as they are in Europe or the West they are happy. It genuinely breaks my heart how there is no love for the continent. Every African that you speak to wants a way out of Africa into Europe and you always hear them say stuff like Africa is unliveable. I genuinely think the reason why Africa has not developed or improved is not solely based on leadership. I think we as africans are the problem, none of us loves or wants to genuinely be in Africa. Hence, why none of us are willing to work towards making a difference. The West know this about us and our leaders also know we do not care about our continent nor do we care about being in Africa and they have used this to their advantage. There is definitely a reason behind this hate because it is unnatural for a group of people to hate their continent so much so they are willing to die instead of being in Africa. That is way too deep and something that is really heartbreaking. You can not be called a pan-africanist, if you are willing to live like a salve in Europe just to be out of Africa. I mean it is embarrassing to say the least. Did you watch the Netflix documentary and read the report by IOM about how young africans from Nigeria are even signing oaths with voodoo doctors and selling their destinies and life away so all these explicators can pay their journeys to Europe to be prostitutes. I mean that is beyond a mental issue. it is crippling our continent and action needs to be taken as soon as possible.

I remember 10/15 years ago when that Sierra lone Journalist (Samara something, can't remember the name) followed the illegal migrants across the Sahara on one of the routes. The road along the Sahara desert part was littered with 100s of bodies of Black Africans, mostly Nigerians. These Arab traffickers will typically take their money and, at first sign of authorities, will leave them stranded. Sometimes they just randomly abandoned them and told them to walk the rest of the way through the desert (60 to 100 miles or so)
I still struggle to understand how some Nigerians can come up with hundreds/thousands of dollars and choose to make this incredibly stupid and life threatening trip instead of starting a small business with what is considered a fortune. The worst is that if you do make it across the sea you end up being stuck in a European refugee camp, potentially for years. Saw a news report of one of these packed camps in Italy, some people had been there applying for asylum for over 4/5 years, people very hostile to them. It's very mind boggling

Phrankleen, Yes we have had very bad presidents in the country in the past but Buhari's administration is the worst yet and so far. If he was caring but surrounded by wicked people, he still could make a good turn around for Nigerians with his position and authority and directives..
Buhari as the head of government is carefree with no empathy, no feelings for Nigerians under his watch, can't be bothered if everyone dies of hunger, in the hands of Fulani herdsmen, in the Mediterranean sea, or in the hands of the ritualists. If a president of a country has a good caring heart, it rubs off on people around him and bad gets to be good and good gets better. I cry when I see clips of black people and children drowning while crossing to get a better life. Nigeria has no leaders or lawmakers. We have dealers of our lives and our children's destinies but posterity will judge all of them and deal with them and their families. In God's perfect timing, Nigeria will come back to life again and Africa will survive. I hope that will be in my time to celebrate and praise God.

Thank your God that your so-called country people did not connive with them to sell you off for spare parts, you know it happens. I am so scared of that part of the world from watching so many evil committed by them that I now have severe phobia for them. Nothing will make me visit or stop over in any country near there.

Some feedback I got when I shared this video with some folks in 9ja to get their thoughts wasn’t encouraging at all. Apparently the govt can’t do much about it🤷🏾‍♀️ the view is that those who went to such countries where seeking “greener pastures” & knew what they were getting into. They pointed out that there are so many living in such dire situations/conditions, even worse than those stuck in Libya, on the streets in 9ja☹️🤦🏾‍♀️ even loads with physical disabilities (not to talk of those with non-physical ones) that are not being cared for😢. They said how do you know those in Libya even want to return to 9ja, a lot of them took out huge loans to finance such trips; how will they face paying back ???🤔 There doesn’t seem to be any straightforward solution & the 9ja govt, even the people don’t view it as a crisis that requires Govt intervention...😯

Are they not seeing all these documentaries? I watched one the other day about the trek from from Europe to Mexico through Texas and then do Canada. It was horrific. The women having to sell their bodies to eat because of being scammed. Black people used as slaves. One Nigerian woman with two kids said she use to have maids, reduced to cleaning the worst of the worst bathrooms. Having to leave her children with people she didn’t trust so they will have food. Then in Mexico they traveled through a mountain called death mountain because it’s guaranteed that someone will die. Some died of exhaustion because they don’t stop once they started. Some died of starvation. And the guide leaves them after they have paid them thousands of $usd$. So they have to follow a trail that none are sure about. As they walk, they dead isn’t buried because they don’t have the strength to bury them. When they make it, across to a Mexican border town, none have enough money, so they find more odd jobs that no one want and work it for a couple years. Then they have to pay someone else to get them across. With the fear of being left in the desert where so many Mexicans are found, the cities are asking other countries for help burying them. The Nigerian woman makes it to Texas with her two daughters but they have seen so much at this point and the girls have been out of school for several years, you can tell she regrets it. She then have to take a bus through several North American states, knowing if she is caught they will separate her from her children and send them all back to Nigeria. Since they were filming her, she uses it to get to Canada. She speaks of using her master’s degree to get a good job. The interviewer does crush her but say something to the effect of “what she does not know” she needs more money for the taxi and will need papers work.

I will share the video even though I know they will never listen. It is not correct to think they are ignorant of what they are getting into, they know 100 %. I have a cousin who was rescued by the parents during the Libya war after the parents paid the war lords to bring him back, long story short, he has gone back...... When we tell them the truth, they simply say we don't mean well for them after we are enjoying life abroad.

Interesting, but haven discussed with victims on their way to Europe,i'll happily give them glucose because life is also hard back in Africa.Businesses not flourishing,(chicken change money),police harassment and ripping off poor black people, insecurity, thieves,no jobs, low salaries,no insurance, harsh climate, dirty, bad roads,no doctors in hospitals but high bills, tribalism, ethnic clashes etc.Abi Richman no get wahala for Nigeria or Africa as a whole with his AC car and house for Banana island or Abuja or those who can afford flights within and out of Africa for some honey moon.etc.
I just saw a new video WODE MAYA was arrested in Lagos simply because he was using a laptop. Many nigerians complain of being arrested simply because they use apps and discuss with foreigners abroad. What a shame. This however contribute alot kicking out Africans away from their own motherland. If only you live in Africa will you believe me. God be our helper.

My dear brother this is a serious issue. If I will share this video not to my African families. A cousin told me she was trying to cross the sea to Europe when I advised her with these same issues she told me she does not Have a choice. Mostly our Ghanaians people are saying those of us abroad don't want them to join us. I once told my sister nobody can deny you entry in to the States or Europe if you have your Visa. I told her she should try the right way. Some ghananains have these funny songs that we don't want them to join us. I laugh when ever I hear it. But I pray every day that all those who want to come should get the chance to so they can also tell to their story. They think we are living in heaven. They do not know the kind of jobs we are doing. Most of us don't like it but if you don't do it how could you survive with your kids. The asantes will say eye asem ooo

The story of these people and so many like them is a very touching one but I feel to say that the European governments don’t care is a false hood. I don’t see how they’d want people just pouring thru their borders. It benefits all of everyone stays in their countries and it is up to Africans and our leaders to make our countries of origin palatable places to live in so people are sucked by the promise of a “better life”. If Nigeria was safe and I could work there and live at 3/4’s of the standard I do here in the uk I kid you not I wouldn’t be here. The issue of migrants had divided Europe’s polity so I feel it is unfair to say they don’t care in fact a mayor in Germany was killed for his pro immigration stance very recently- www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-europe-48496972
