hint for the shelter; spray the roof with marine waterproofing ( for sails)this makes the top waterproof and makes the fabric last much longer.

You guys are so fun. You make working feel like play. I can't not smile when I watch you and get excited about seeing your projects. I wish we could hang out but you're there and me here and never between shall meet. But that's the great thing about the Internet, we don't have to meet people to fall in love with them. It's a "cultivator" (with a bent tine!) - used for breaking up dug-over earth, hooking out weeds, raking up leaves and mulch, etc. - useful bit of kit :-)

Take a tip from one who knows, cut one fence post up in 60cm lengths, then bang them in the ground next to the chill out uprights and then tie or tape them together. Then make some guy strings using similar system. If you don't, one morning the chill out area will be in the nearest town .....without you.

@@theindieprojects Yep. You gotta anchor that thing before it sails away upon the wind. But you're gonna love having the extra space to hang out and enjoy the warmth of a nice campfire out front. Kitty will love it too. Although kitty has a great spot above the cab that's the envy of other cats. What a great spot!

We put one of these up at work for guests every year, and every year it gets destroyed by wind. If your fairy lights don't get enough sun, switch them around so you can put the solar panel up in the crook of the tree. That will save you from constantly kicking it too.

@@CMCrockett I had the identical gazebo to this one and replaced the fabric roof with brush wood to allow wind to pass through better. Still got wiped out and destroyed by a storm. Lovely idea to have it, but don't get too attached to it :(

Indeed - and, when wind is forecast, open the back so wind can gush through, else, even when anchored, the wind will rip the roof off!

You guys enjoy your work, which helps you see your dreams become reality,. If I were to attempt to build out an empty van, I would barely know where to begin, nor which tools I'd need to buy or borrow.
Most likely, you are only using that rake since it's there, & maybe the only one you have. As with construction work, using the right tools for the job will save you time, move the job along more quickly, while sparing your bones & muscles from fatigue.
The garden rake Bea is using has stiff, short, thick tines, & can put up with years of use. You can buy a 30 year old one at a yard sale & expect to get another 50 years out of it. They are designed to be used on cleared, weeded soil, to chop at & break up clods of soil, to remove stones, with a back & forth motion, & then, finally to refine & level out soil, to prepare for planting, like when about to sprinkle grass seeds to grow a lawn. Then with some seeds, with a gentle, shallow back & forth, going along the length of rows, raking gently to mix those seeds into the top 1/2" or 1" depth, then water gently - trying to not disrupt the even distribution of seeds. You can also use the flat of the back of the rake to level it out, without the rows made by the tines. You can also tamp down using the front side of it down on the surface, with the handle straight up, like maybe to level out a pile of soil a bit.
Those are also used to mix in soil amendments into the loosened, native soil, using it in a push-pull motion to mix in - for example - lime ( to neutralize acidic soil), a 3" layer of composted, aged manure, garden compost, & maybe kelp, or green sand - depending what your soil needs for ideal growing conditions - like for veggies, etc...A garden rake is then used to blend whatever amendments have been spread on top of the cleared soil in relatively even layers, then all is mixed in with the top few inches of native soil. The tines of those rakes are just the right length for jobs like that, & can be useful in raking up from that blended layer of amended garden soil, raised rows, & then to level those raked up rows, once ready to plant. They're also useful when laying down pea gravel for paths, or for cleaning & evening out established gravel paths, or putting down an even layer of gravel onto which you might prepare to lay down bricks in a leveled sand bed for a patio, or other types of patio & path stones.
To be much more effective in raking up cut grass, weeds, etc, it would be easier on the hands, arms, neck & back to be using a rake with a fan shape with some spring to it. That way you can cover more surface area more quickly. A rake like that allows long, sweeping swipes to gather up lots of cut stems, branches & leaves quickly & to pile them up. Those rakes have flexible tines, which are closer together. that way, with repeated short raking strokes, the spring in the tines helps to prevents fatigue, as you can scrape away at the soil surface too, once you get down to that, to loosen & gather surface debris.
For fall leaves, & large, lightweight cut growth, all one might need is a large, lightweight plastic rake, to gather large swaths of whatever sits on top, to pile up. They are not heavy - so can be useful clearing larger areas more quickly with that much wider fan shape. For raking up cut brush like that, you'd be better off with a strong, but springy metal, med sized, fan shaped rake.

I've been considering getting a gazebo like that for shade on my patio, & to create a sense of privacy from neighbors if desired, & a perfect space for sitting around for drinks & food. The fairy lights will be a magical touch. I have a solar lantern like that, but you'll need to get it out in the sun to have it light up at night. Mine no longer lights up, but I still enjoy seeing it. Guess I could try to replace the solar charger or the light bulb.
When it's going to be rainy or windy, you might want to remove the fabric & put it back when the weather is less wet or windy. It'll prevent the gazebo from blowing down, being smashed, & the fabric getting splashed with mud or getting mildewy. Might as well keep it in like new condition as long as possible. I have seen some get trashed by wind. The frames just aren't strong enough for that level of stress to the frame. The legs can pull up so easily too, when the covering becomes a sail.
That said - I'm really looking forward to seeing how you put together your outdoor kitchen. I've been wanting to do that for years. When I was a kid, we bought a big ol' colonial New England home, & in the back yard was a hand built stone fireplace/ grill. Alongside the grilling area, they'd built openings on either side to hold wood & kindling, etc. My parents weren't into using it for cookouts using wood or charcoal, but I'd made a few small fires to toast marshmallows on sticks.
I've seen some really cool pizza ovens built on UA-cam, where the fire is in the back & you lay the pizza in the narrowed chamber to the front. You can also build them with side areas, & use those for baking foods in roasting pans too.
Since you're off grid & using solar, you might take some of the load off by adding propane for fridge, cooking, & they have some great little heaters for vans too.
So excited to see your place in Portugal, with fruit on the trees & land to work with. I hope you try growing veggies, if you haven't already.

That Chill Out garden canopy looks great. The lights will give it great evening ambience. Be sure to stake it down securely, or the wind will take it away.
Kitties naturally take to elevated perches. Probably something to do with the stalking instinct.
Maybe you should give “The Land” a proper name, like the Home Place, or Base Camp.
The montage was very nice, and an evening walk around the place must be so relaxing and reassuring.
    Good Vibrations

    Hi there
You ought to set up a spreadsheet to calculate electrical consumption from your devices. So you can either input running hours of each device and it will tell you consumption. Or tell it which items you are using and it will calculate the run time.
Not hard to setup given the specs of your gear.
Also I concur with other comments, regarding tying down the awning. As a caravan we of over 30 years it is amazing how little wind is required to pick up an awning or tent and deposit it two hundred yards away.
I remember the Fastnet tragedy, I was in a caravan in Cornwall and the wind was turning over caravans, cars, tents disappeared .
