  • It's day 2 of Vlogmas, and we're curing our olives! I'm going to be honest, when I first saw an olive on a tree a couple of years ago I was shocked to discover you can't eat them straight off, because they're horribly BITTER!
    In todays video I'm showing you the curing method I'm going to use, which is fast and easy :)

    The bath is coming along nicely.

    You could cut the tub cover in two parts so when your in your hot bath you can put half of the lid back on and the water won't get cold so quickly. It will also easier to lift instead of one big peace.

    On a small batch try to add the top of the orange peel (without the white stuff ) and aromatic herbs + little bit of salt. Gives the olives a really nice taste.

    I've always hated olives. However, onc I tasted olives kept in water, as opposed to brine. I think that's because I don't like salt much , I absolutely loved them so much so that I would suck on the pit just so they would let longer.. I still hate all other kinds of olives. Try one just cured in water, even if you don't like other kinds.

    the local Spanish olive curing method is with brine and add bunches of local thyme and crushed garlic and orange peel, and if all else fails the local Agricultural Co-operative will sell them in bulk...Also next year depending on how many olive trees and sacks of them you can harvest. The local olive oil makers will take your olives and convert them into your own olive oil....for a percentage !!

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  5 років тому

      Loving the sound of trying it with orange peel! We may take them to the press next year if we harvest enough, this year I don’t think we’ll be doing that

    Done "cast iron" grab a steel barrel (cut top bottom off and then cut in half) great to use at ends ,but still use stones to hold them in place.. build a wood stair case ?when you have rocks for free that could be used? Olives !! do you have a stream? for leaching.. The Native America did same for acorn nuts to eat them.. you can brine after..

    • @theindieprojects

    Any good reclamation yards near you? Check out because you can usually pick up some great wooden planks etc very reasonable.. Also I saw a bath that was built on top of two foot wide concrete pipes then a small layer of sand and about 1inch concrete base with drainage plug in place then sides built with concrete blocks, this can be sealed with plaster or even a suitable epoxy layer or even tiles, think Morocco bath style ??

    • @johnlong3214
      @johnlong3214 5 років тому +1

      Ever? that's a long time.
      Salt water directly damages plants by accumulating chloride and sodium ions that can be toxic as they accumulate in plants. ... Also, the longer plants experience salt water inundation the greater the toxicity. A good thing about salt is that it is readily soluble and will leach out of the soil with successive rains.
