- "Bring back the classic circuits" they say. Alright. I'll bite- Caesar's Palace, Rouen, 8 mile Spa?
8 Mile Spa you say?
Join me in rfactor2 as I take a 1966 Brabham, 1992 Ferrari and 2017 Williams to the historic Spa to see what it would be like to race the modern super safe super fast hybrids on a track notorious for death and destruction.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

@@philrod1 how long have you been waiting to do that? :)
And that was the Williams- one of the WORST cars on the grid....
james curtis I used the league edition of the mod so the Williams had Mercedes physics.
"What if Hockenheim was twice as long and had no barriers or run-off areas of any kind and was also completely insane?"
Historic Spa: "Hold my beer."
Do the old Hockenheim, not the Schlockenheim that exists now thanks to the Green Party.
PESCARA: How cute. Hold my Brunello.
The original 1906 +100km Le Mans. Aww how cute
It would be the Targa Florio circuit
Try the pre-war layout of Hockenheim, that comes a little bit closer to Spa...
but the trees come even closer! :)
ERS management at old spa would be a nightmare with only TWO braking points
One. Les Combes was barely a tap.
couldn't you siphon off the ERS-H... turbo must be spinnning at max for 2 min
This is precisely why we need #V10Forever
Ferrariman601 briNg baCK oLd HocKenHeiM!
This. This is why we have no old Hockenheim with these cars. They’d run them in limp mode to save them.
probably better to just get rid of it. save a lot of weight.
LMAO imagine a corner on modern SPA beeing called "some guy's driveway"
would be a nice name for a corner
"And now they come around past Dave's flat at 350 kmh, unfortunately he'll be needing to replace his lawn tomorrow"
"Pray to whoever your god is that you've got enough grip."

Adds a new perspective when people say modern cars are too fast for old circuits, never imagined that old spa would would be entirely flat out, and as a result rather boring (to drive)
Or you could add a
Some chicanes but I'm pretty sure with other cars on track it would be more fun
It's gonna be like Indy 500, but with right hand turns 😁
You can see on Copse Corner in Silverstone. It was a 3-4th Gear Corner back than. Today its nearly flat out.
Or 130r in Suzuka. They took it today with one Hand like it would be part of the strait.
@@aditya.sagraha yeah and indy is not boring
Exactly. That's why i get mad when people say stuff like "old Hockenheim was better": with modern cars it would be like 80% of the track is the mulsanne straight, full throttle with a couple of chicanes in it. Not really interesting. But back then it was a completely different story, with the cars never being fully under control, even during the straights
I'm kinda shocked that the Ferrari's engine managed to last a lap with all those bumps.
it screamed in agony the whole lap.
surprised the axles didn't snap
Pandem R32 Skyline that was like one model of Ferrari
Back then, Enzo Ferrari was alive. So not a shock really
@@yashtulsyan5713 not in 92 he wasn’t.
I just wanted to say, you drove that historic formula 1 car I wouldn't say masterfully, but you clearly know well the car's driving dynamics with diving to get the nose down to turn in, turning the car with the throttle, etc. A very impressive drive.
Eric Hollaway I know it's a bit of a cop out, I can't say anything specific, but even a layman can tell a master when they see one. But if I had to say, some high speed corners were perfect, but some others were not great lines and could've carried more speed around.
For me the best to watch was the Brabham, the later cars with their aero looked to have lowered the skill required for the driver and decreased the spectacle for those watching. It looks like the old tracks suited the old cars, it puts perspective on why circuits needed to modernise for entertainment as well as for safety, the old silverstone would be a right bore if they hadn't built the new corners.
Alan still takes a master to extract the most of these “easier” cars though.
Talking about classic circuits, I wonder what F1 cars from different eras would be capable of at Charade/Clermont-Ferrand. For those who don't know the place, it's basically a French Nordschleife at 1/3 scale which hosted the French GP a couple of times between 1965 and 1972. It's also absolutely bonkers.
The track includes a lot of turns which may or may not be taken at full throttle in more modern cars, much more than at classic Spa.
4:05 "down to 4th for... Eh... Whatever that is..." OMG!!!! the disrespect towards... Eh... That famous curve... That goes right...
YES! I LOVE... What's it called again? I don't fucking know lol
Stavelot i think
That shift tho with brake and gas
@@coronell1237 it's the heel-and-toe technique, it's mandatory if you dont want your wheels to lock up while downshifting in a corner.
That corner is called La Carriere I think
Obviously, as I'm now a super massive UA-cam celebrity, I have to use red arrows to generate clicks. (Sarcasm, obviously. I'm taking the piss)
Now, as for the Williams lap, bear in mind that I was at full throttle equivalent to:
3 and a bit laps of Indianapolis in a car not designed for it
2 trips down Mulsanne without the chicanes
6 trips down the Dottinger Hohe Straight at Nords.
Downtown San Francisco to the other side of the Bay Bridge.
All fun and games until someone stacks it!
Or until something breaks. Or something.
Which wheel and pedals do you use?
If this is what we need to see an engine blow up for the first time in a decade, we should do it.
What sim is this? Would you mind pinning the sim your playing in your videos in the description? Also any mods you use would be great to know about. Great video as always!
Sam Ashby I mention what sim it is within the first twenty seconds of the video 😉
Just look at the Isle of Man tt to see what happens when old tracks meet new racing machines.
Those folks in the 60's would think the 1990s and the 2010s cars are spaceships or something out of star trek.
The check engine sign on the williams at the end of the lap. Something remains constant.
That was more informative than I expected. While recognizing the obvious limitations of comparing sim to reality, it does clearly demonstrate the much more challenging conditions the drivers faced in the 60’s - track safety, grip, car fragility, consequences of a high speed crash etc. No wonder Jim Clark hard Spa, although he won it multiple times and sometimes minutes ahead of the next driver! Imagine driving Spa in the wet in that era!
Never realized how flat out this entire retro track is. Love it!
Spa was absolutely mental. Absolutely no run offs, stone houses and stone walls built right up to the course edge, massive curbs some places, no curbs other places, spectators excessively close to the track edges with almost no barrier.
Bro when you drove the Ferrari at full clip it instantly took me back to Grand Prix the movie with Sarti's Ferrari screaming thru Spa in the rain. Great vid.
This is great! Another thing to consider between this simulation and reality (besides the engine going flat out for that long) is that modern supersoft racing tires would have so much pickup from a country road and its dusty shoulders that driving that the car would be like driving on ice by the end of the lap.
You're lucky that v12 ferrari didnt get caught on fire after revving it that much :D
Looking at the sides of the track, or better said, of the road, I'm thinking "when F1 was a faster version of rally..."
Possibly a different perspective. I did work experience at Ilmor Engineering back in '97, for the 2 weeks leading up to the European Grand Prix. I was working in the same building as the dyno, so whenever they had the new G block engines on test, we got to hear them. They never ran them at max revs for more than about a minute. I suspect that both the '92 Ferrari, and the '17 Williams would have suffered catastrophic engine failure (engine decides it would rather be a very expensive grenade rather than an engine) if you tried to run them like that for race distance.
Hockenheim
The overall lap record of the old Spa
3m 13.40, Henri Pescarolo in a Matra WSC car in 1973
You beat that by 36 seconds, Pescarolo’s time wouldn’t even beat the 107% rule, crazy
nufcdazzla I’ll bet you could hear him the whole way around the lap. The Matra 670 had a truly epic engine note...
Aiden, you reckon you could do a story time on the 2002 WRC Rally Argentina? The final day of rallying threw up so many different unexpected twists that on the very last stage, the person in 4th was eventually declared the winner.
Sainz won that rally iirc
I love watching this, at how he feel so terrified in the 66 car and then radiates confidence in the 17 williams love it!
How bout old spa with modern GT cars and LMP1 cars??
LMP are just as bad as F1 there. GT is amusing in a race.
Even an old Group C or even a Modern LMP1 would be the same even worse if we used a Porsce 962 or a modern Porsche 919 hybrid which at this point would be a 200-250 mph sprint
LMP1 might be faster at Spa I think since I believe they have an even higher top speed, & their lower aerodynamic grip might be less of a disadvantage compared to F1 cars since the old Spa's corners are relatively gentle
Really liked that I had no idea the new cars could carry some much extra speed. It would make a good test of a engine to make it run race distance at max revs.
I was talking to someone at about the time Nicola Foulston tried to bring F1 back to Brands Hatch. We were talking about alterations needed to allow an F1 car to race. This person said (he was an engineer) that no F1 car would get through Paddock in its current form as they would hit zero G
Never been able to force myself to watch a SIM video, this was my first and I'm surprised at how enjoyable it was.
"...and I'm running the minimum wing as well." lol First laugh of the day.
Old Spa definitely required a certain amount of cheerful lunacy to attempt driving it flat out like they did in the 60s
Great fun! Thank you!
Your first run reminded me of Jackie Stewart's story of him going off into a ditch (badly injured) and he's covered in petrol-soaked clothes. No marshalls at that point so Graham Hill stopped, got him out with a lot of difficulty, but realising Stewart was covered in petrol (their biggest fear back then, unsurprisingly), he stripped him naked. I seem to remember that some farmer came along to help, a blanket appears at some point, but iirc, not before a couple of nuns saw the classical "villain" look of Hill (that tash really gave him the Victorian bad guy look, as did the twinkle in his eyes lol), who was holding onto a naked, young bloke in a field! He tells the story far better than me... If you get the chance to hear him talk about it (I think it was on a maybe BBC? documentary about the dangerous days of F1) or read about it, do! He's an amazing storyteller, and the warmth in his voice as he talks about his old mates is wonderful.
But a '92 _Ferrari?_ Did they ever get as far as that? ;)
1966 car drive felt like never ending country trip haha
Honestly, I liked the in-period Brabham the best. Made the Spa more enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing!
Rouen, at tleast the GLP67 layout is the most underrated sim track. And it was an absolute circuit of death. I wish Iracing would add Those old GPL circuits to their service with updated art. I know their not laser scanned but theyre pretty damn accurate.
I swear this channel is my favorite one.your content is great.you deserve more subs.👍
Absolutely fantastic. Now to make Spa even more realistic, do it in the rain!
I knew we have come very very far in motor racing in 60 years but MY GOD that Williams absolutely shat on that unforgiving track!
8 mile Spa with DRS - be some serious tow action in modern F1 cars - but those walls and telephone poles would kill anyone that has an off
Rouen-Les-Essarts please Aidan. I would love to see what modern cars would make of the fast downhill curves leading to the cobbled hairpin and the blast back up through the forest to the top of the hill. David Purley used to scream into his helmet to help keep his throttle foot planted through the terrifying downhill sweepers... One of the greatest but most dangerous tracks of all time
"Time to drive like a hairdresser" Cause you cut corners? I love this quote already
Nigel because it’s called Les Combes. Sounds like comb.
@@AidanMillward I liked my interpetation better hahaha
I thought it was a reference to Jimmy Broadbent
I did kinda the same thing at classic Hockenheim today with the Ferrari F138. Going around that bend at 80% throttle made me feel like I was gonna die even just playing a sim racer.
That was superb and also completely terrifying especially during the Ferrari lap. Loved it though. Great video!
I was about to get mad at the double ad after the first car but being greeted with the glorious scream of v12 power made me forget all about it 😂
This was pretty cool. Really puts into perspective the modern circuits that people say are boring. The cars are so capable, it's almost impossible to get "exciting" racing from them. Almost like it should just be a time trials format, like perpetual qualifying.
Exactly, and the fia had been trying all sorts of things to try slow down the cars and have "racing"
Do a Story Time on the Caesar's Palace Grand Prix.
E. L. The car park Grand Prix shit show 😂
Aidan Millward do a lap of ALL layouts of the circuit gilles villeneuve, if u can get them.
SHIZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Do the old Monza. That track is insanely dangerous
Broadbent already did that
Practically you brake only at the first Lesmo and at the parabolica
i drive lots of f1 cars on that on assetto its so much fun pushing modern f1 cars to their max speeds on old monza
Those 60' downshifts are impressive. I wasn't aware of the technique. I've learned something today, thank you ! :)
Also, I loved when you said "I don't need this anymore", putting your left foot off the brake :P
Would love to see a go in the modern car with the setup somewhat optimized and see what lap could be done. Longer gearing DRS open, etc.
Brilliant, you answered a lot of questions for me, thanks.
that first car, holy hell I was watching and I was in the edge of me seat almost screaming! Well driven!
god dam that seems like it was incredible circuit but i used to wonder why people said the mid 20th century racing drivers were the best ever. those mad men drove on tracks like this at massive speed in cars with no aero. i have to say though i do think f1 needs more speed based tracks. monza and modern spa are great but thats pretty much it because i persoanlly dont see silverstone as a speed track like spa and monza after its changes.
2017 car need longer gear, so she can reach 240 or more...
god the driving you do is insane, well done man!
3:08 "pray to who ever your god is that you have grip ............. Liam Neeson has let me live" i laughed way to hard at that
Same. So unexpected
The noise the '92 Ferrari makes while downshifting (6:27 - 6:29) is amazing.
I don't know why, it just sounds... good.
5 second penalty for cornering flat out in the Williams :-p
I enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Even if it's just a sim, I love that V12 sound so much. That was the time when I didn't miss a single race. Today I use a F1 race as a substitute for sleeping pills.
How the mighty have fallen..
CC_CGN same. Used to wake up ridiculously early for every single race and watch it in a cold room (that’s where the TV was) when I was a kid. Watched it sometimes when I was a teenager and haven’t watched it all for the last decade I think. There just wasn’t much to watch.
MODERN F1 AT PESCARA! Theres a video of someone doing it in a Benetton B197 in 5 MINUTES! That's how long this REAL grand prix track is!
It was me :D I used the Benetton because of the engine sound, perfect for the super long straights. With the minimun downforce to reach 396 km/h.
That was some nice demo’s , insane to go flat out in a modern F1 car
Great Video! Just would have liked to know the laptimes of the Brabham but particularly the Ferrari for comparison :)
Another interesting track you could put on your list for this series is the Circuit de Montjuïc (Barcelona Street Ciruit) raced in the early 70s (if they have it in rfactor2, no idea). Interesting track I would like to see a lap of.
Monjuïc was a cluster. Monaco dangerous even for the time. But check out Pescara for some true WTF1
Great idea Aidan, brilliant
Story Time request: Early 2000's AMA Superbike era that gave rise to Nicky Hayden
Awesome drive, cool concept. Don't have a great memory so would have liked to have a summary comparison of track times at the end.
"Already did Monaco, so no need doing that again" is a statement that the FIA and Liberty media could learn.
Monaco is at least more interesting than Barcelona.
@Roger Dodger I like Baku the best I think. At least that's my favorite to drive in the game
@@alaeriia01 well they should axe monaco and barca so i dont see your point
@Roger Dodger monaco is a bullshitparade
1966 spa: the only track that you need cruise control for
This game better be phenomenal as far as vehicle physics. The crowd and other aspects seem a decade behind. Lol. But awesome video!
In older F1 times good drivers were not determined by how fast they were, the ability to stay alive driving these things around these tracks already meant they were fucking good lol
Jackie Stewart and others said it was luck not skill that determined survival. That whole era was Russian Roulette
I would like to see the return of more mechanical skill, less reliance on aero and setup while keeping todays safety standards and measures.
"Drive like a hairdresser, slow in fast out"
Quote of the century.
Awesome stuff
Unbelievable. Those laps scared the leaving day lights out of me.
Aidan....just love what your doing.
Insane, absolutely insane!!!
Coming into turn
Driver: Sorry 'bout your driveway and lawn
Random dude: What?
Car rips into the lawn and driveway
Driver: SORRY!!
Absolutely beautiful foot work 😍
"The apex is some guy's driveway..."
So basically, modern cars on old circuits would equate to an open wheeled version of NASCAR restrictor plate superspeedway races...
The old tracks Wow! Got to love it!
Your sound settings are great
Chris Amon told Rob Walker that he was taking the Masta Kink flat in 5th on the rev limiter in his March in 1970. Those cars had the early version of aero, but really weren't that far off the 1966 Brabham.
And even with all the modern safety and crash protection, that track would kill people today.
My God... that force feedback must be insane!!
what set up are you using for your hardware to play rf2?
Great vid.
Is there a "safe place" to get GPL?
I have tried several times over the last year or two but every time I get something malicious with it and GPL doesn't work....... Had it when first released, and loved it although I struggled greatly with it.
imagine coming off at 200 mph plus with only a house to to stop you ! You wouldn't need a medic!
Races with modern cars and DRS on those old tracks would lead to the most exiting thing there ever was.
For the full race all cars would within 5-10 seconds, no one could get away and every last lap would lead to inescapable deadly crashes.
To think that the area of the track was fiercely fought over in 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. I wonder how fast a tank could complete the circuit?
Is it possible to find the old Brno street track?? Can't find any videos on UA-cam but apparently it was crazy
That was cool!
Wow the sensation of speed in this game is great
Never even seen this game before
wonder how many laps the engines could actually withstand at full RPM
back then, Person 1"Are you sure its safe to stand at edge of track? Person 2 "What are you talking about? we just stand behind this 7 lb construction fence thing"
Can't you setup gears? Your hit with that 2017s car almost rev limitor. Or was it on the limit?
That was sick! Racing drivers have always been and still are crazy, but those guys back then basically had to accept that they would probably die if they raced professionally... This video really showed how exposed they are, very interesting
Do you have any more videos like this? Like old-school Monza, old-school Zandvoort, Montjuic (if applicable)? Or vice versa with old cars at new tracks like Baku and Austin? I just discovered (two years later) your channel and it's really cool.
That's some impressive heel and toe
I dimly remember the '66 version of Spa, I was 5 years old that year. Having got used to hearing contemporary F1 cars the rev drops between gears in the 5-speed box in the Brabham was quite a shock. Personally I'd like to see F1 go back to something closer to that car where the suspension actually moved over bumps, squatted under power and brakes and where mechanical grip versus driver skill counted for everything.
The realistic speeds for the newer F1 cars . . . the one variable would be how much of the wings and aero spoilers would be trimmed away with the newer cars? As the increase of trimming away the aero appendages could equate to a higher top-end speed.
Part of the equation would be how much the ruling bodies of the FIA and the Formula One Group would allow the teams to trim down the aero appendages on the cars; the other part of the equation would be how much aero trimming would be done, on the cars, for the drivers to be comfortable for downforce in the corners.
If the cars were to run the same aero package at Spa as at Monaco, it would certainly put restraints on the top-speed potential of the F1 cars at Spa.
I'm impressed with the heel, toe footwork.
What type and model simulator were you using? SVP
