DRIVING SENNA'S LOTUS AT BATHURST! 1986 F1 Car vs V8 Supercar at Bathurst
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 чер 2019
- The Formula One cars from 1986 were probably the most insane racing machines ever created. 1200hp+ in party mode with 5+ bar of boost pressure in the turbo. All for one thing: Speed.
So how mental would it have been to drive one of those F1 cars around Bathurst and how competitive would the car have been compared to something that calls Mt Panorama its home?
Let's find out!

Holy crap that was insane. A comparison between these 1980s f1 cars and group C monsters would be cool to see.
What drugs were they taking?
It was the 80s, so cocaine. lol
Crystal meth didn’t come in until the 90s. XD
@@TotoDG methamphetamines have been around since world war 2. Maybe earlier
The engine noise on that Lotus, like God playing a kazoo made of hornets with Tyrannosaurus rex accompaniment.
I remember on the movie, Grand Prix, the French guy said what keeps them racing was a "lack of imagination" because if they could imagine how they could be killed, they would never drive those cars. lol
BMWs figures put the base power about 350 bhp, with a gain of 20 bhp for every 0.1 bar you run. So I'll let you work that one out. Suffice to say 1200 bhp is conservative and there weren't many dynos to test 1000 bhp+ monsters on back in the 80s.
BMW was also known for running purposely-built qualifying-spec engines back then. The engines were built to work like spaceship boosters for two laps tops and then die. 1.200 HP was the standard for those engines, the race-spec engines were about 750 to 800 for the sake of fuel consumption and durability. I learnt this on a video of the now-defunct Formula1Insider channel
Thank You Aidan! The JPS 98T is by far and away, my favourite f1 car. The look the sound & the sheer barbaric nature of that season makes this no. 1 for me. You’ve done it justice by driving it on Bathurst. Such a beautiful machine!
so thankful I found your channel, this is one of the best videos ever on utube. please do more cars around the Mountain, thank you.
I don't do SIM's, nor even care to watch them but that my friend was brilliant. I was on the edge of my seat during the Senna car run. Amazing! Thank you.
Tiny correction: the 1986 BMW engine was a 4-in-line rather than a flat-4.
Yep. Straight four. The block comes from an engine designed to produce about 80 bhp. I'm sure I heard/read somewhere that BMW only used blocks that had already done 100k+ km. The logic being that if it was going to crack it would have already done so.
I've watched 2times and it was mega damn good and Aiden keep up the work
Nice 👍 any luck finding the Brno street circuit from the late 80s? Or Wellington street circuit was awesome too
Definitely need to do a story time video on the turbo era in F1!!
Insane!!
All of that turbo lag is why Senna drove constantly blipping the throttle mid corner trying to load the engine and upon corner exit the turbo had spooled and he was, as they say, “off to the races”.
Very nice! Our mountain has had it's fair amount of attrition over the decades, and as far as I am concerned, as a track it beats the piss out'a the Tilkedromes! Took a few goes to get that monster around there, I presume?
Did the ford lap in one take. Took two practice laps to get a feel of the turbo and get the gear ratios right and then did the lap in the lotus.
Bathurst is the track if done most laps in, so a lot of the time I can jump in and go.
The BMW engine was an INLINE FOUR not a flat four, it was a production line block as used in the smaller engined 3 and 5 series road cars.
I predict you will have 100k subscribers by the end of the year
The next big sim racing channel I think. Jimmy Broadbent 2.0
I like Aidan,but I doubt he'll be getting 100k or even 50k.
25k at most tbh.
Current rate of growth is a hundred subscribers a day. I leave the maths to you as I cannot do more than basic addition and subtraction. No seriously, I think I might be dyslexic but with numbers.
@@AidanMillward That's amazing! 100 subs a day is 36,500 in a year, so about 3 years to reach 100k. Presumably, it snowballs the more subs you get.
I'm happy if I get a hundred views on a video in a week...
Mobile Chicane I just checked. It’s actually TWO hundred a day right now. So let’s call it a 140 average.
My god you are a amazing driver
fantastic
Just like the Funny Car drag racer VS The #55 Ford Mustang Supercar that happened a few weeks ago
that sound of the engine is making me nurse a semi.
Do you have a video on the 1983 Brabham?
Hey, I think you should make a video about the Lacia D50. I think it is very interesting because it is a car designed by Lancia but used by Ferrari, and gave Fangio one of his championships.
Man I miss the 80's!
that was like a two stroke MotoGP from the 80s and 90s, nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing PPOOOWWWERRRRAHHHH, change gear nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing PPOOOWWWERRRRAHHHH repeat
Bathurst would make even modern day F1 interesting.
Loving the content!
I did drive some V10 F1 Cars here a year or so ago.
You did a better job than Dumfries would have.
Aidan, to be totally realistic the engine should have eaten itself for lunch - 5 bar for that length of time! I am probably wrong but I thought Jenson Button took his McLaren around Bathurst in around that time several years ago now. I am sure someone will be along to correct me soon. The videos are on UA-cam. He also had a go at Lowndsies supercar and vice versa.
Button did it in 1:45ish I think which is easily decimated in a sim
Plus on the out lap I changed gear at about 9k to stop the turbo kicking in. According to Chief Wiggum the engine will grenade itself after two hot laps. And since Bathurst and Spa are of equal length that suddenly sounds reasonable.
@@AidanMillward I thought it was about that time, however, I don't think he was trying very hard either as he didn't want to stuff it into the shrubbery which at Bathurst, as you know, can hurt.
@@peterlovett5841 Jimmy Broadbent did a video awhile back just absolutely smashing JB's record so it's pretty safe to say Button was taking it REALLY easy on that lap.
Thomas Chester Pabalan I did mine about a year and a half before him, but that was when I had 50 subscribers 😂
@@AidanMillward woops my bad didn't know you made it before him 😂😂
Can you drive the old Interlagos circuit?
Dammmmmmn son smoked it
Needs bellowing black smoke pouring out the exhausts on boost...
What an awesome era of F1
LOL that was cool, nice foorwork man! but why no block downshifting? ;-)
Dave McRee I don’t trust myself 😂
@@AidanMillward haha, too true mate. but once you've braked real late, stood on the anchors, block shifted the Chase from 5th to 2nd, it's like some sort of opiate, lol.
Great voideo dude!
Hi aidan, do you wear gloves while sim racing?? Just brought a racing rig and I was wondering if use them and who to recommend me please mate 👍👍
Matt Stanley I don’t wear gloves myself if I ever get a wheel with alcantara I may do but right now on a plastic grip there’s no point.
@@AidanMillward ok aiden thanks my friend 👍👍
With the Wellington street circuit how about a full F1 GP with the 1986 grid CPU controlled
put this beat in a modern f1 with all that downforce insane lol
Hitting a kangaroo would be wild
Which mod is this?
Johnny Dumfries had a 6-speed box; Senna stayed with a dogleg 5-speed until the following year.
Do a lap at Adelaide!
I knew the turbo lag and boost pressures back then was insane, but I didn't realise that the powerband was so narrow and all in the top 1000rpm.
It worked like a diesel. Nothing, nothing, nothing EVERYTHING aaaaand too late gotta change gear.
Rinse and repeat.
@@AidanMillward I was just thinking it seems just like my modified diesel van in character (minus about 1000bhp though)
The BMWs were not flat fours. They were straight fours at an angle i can’t remember how many degrees off 90 but not many. What made them amazing was that they were built out of stock BMW cast iron blocks. Not new blocks but old ones that were gathered from various BMW repair shops. They were left out in the weather and rumour has it the mechanics were asked to piss on them rather than use the facilities. The reason they used blocks with it is said 100s of kilometres on them was because they felt all the stresses of the casting process would have become neutral leaving a perfect block to start with.
One more thing in qualifying trim the BMWs were closer to 1500 hp.
Senna would blip his throttle mid corner so the turbo would stay spooled and shave off seconds off the lap time in one corner
I've taken the 86 lotus onto the old mulsanne on project cars 2 to see what top speed I could achieve as it's the most powerful car, turned the aero down to minimum and spreading the gears out a bit and the thing would not go faster than 260k... I cannot begin to describe my disappointment
this si to responsev its modern lag and you can find videos of cuple race driver explaning that you need to press throtthel befor corner cus of lag was so huge
That bmw engine was a inline four cylinder.
And developed 1500 horsepower in qualifying mode.
that one was in benetton lotus had renault engine
filip 4457 he mentioned the “bmw flat four engine” and that it had give or take 1200hp.

If your using a gear lever why dont your hands leave the wheel
Because those animations aren’t in rf2.
First.
Which is about the only time I'll get to say this in relation to racing
Flat 4?
I get in line and flat confused.
DID SOMEONE SAY BOOOOOST
Team Wabeenology PPPFFFSSSSSTTTTTSSSSHHHHH!
Beta blockers. And, in the Ford you had at least a second in hand over the Mountain :)
My best is a 03.2. There is more time to be had.
So you see people it aint about number of cylinders.
Mihajlo Vucinic MUH V10 REEEEEEEE!
Pls use metric system!!!
I use MPH because England. Plus beyond 320 I can't do the maths anymore.
Can you drive like this at all in the real world? I'm not being a dick I'm just curious.
manoe jose I drive safely and responsibly at all times 😁
@@AidanMillward But of course. No, I mean do you or have you ever done a track day or even a single seater experience? I have, last year I done a formula Renault 2000 it was short, but awesome.
@@glencooper43 I did a test drive of some Ford road cars at Donnington and a single seat day at Mallory Park. Would do again.
@@AidanMillward Yeah I'm gonna do it again before I get too old and fat. I done rally about ten years ago but I was crap. I prefer the precision and throttle response on a proper single seater.
not a flat 4 a straight 4
I always get them confused 😭
Aidan Millward I wish they had flat 4’s it would mix up the sound people are always complaining about haha
